The SpaceSpacious bedroom with full-size bed and workspace in charming Victorian home with all mod-cons: updated kitchen, jacuzzi tub, and high-speed cable internet. No TV, but you can stream over wireless, and settle in by the wood stove on chilly winter nights. AC available in the summer for your bedroom. Downtown New Haven is a short, ten-minute drive or quick bus trip down Whitney Avenue, and Whitneyville village is three blocks away. The neighborhood is safe and walkable, and you will find Books and Co. (with its attached coffee shop), the Whitneyville Food Center, and the Playwright Pub among the many small shops around the corner. Also within walking distance is Soup Girl, with a delectable selection of daily soups (and ridiculously good cupcakes), and Le Petit Gourmet, which has a small but yummy selections of sweet and savory foods to eat in or take out. This room is a great place to settle in for a longer stay and I have hosted several month-long lodgers. You will have your own walk-in closet with dresser and plenty of hanging space, and you will have access to an ironing board, iron, hair dryer and other homey things you might need, but wouldn't want to bring with you. During longer stays, you will have access to fresh sheets and towels every week to change at your convenience. You will also be welcome to share some cereal and coffee/tea during the first few days of your stay, but should plan to make your own breakfasts if you'll be here for more than a week. The house is "shoes off upstairs" so plan to bring some house slippers for the cooler months. Personable cat in residence. Guest AccessGuests are welcome to use the kitchen, dining area and living room during the day and evening as well as the washer and dryer on the premises. The kitchen is available for making breakfast and light food prep -- please contact me in advance if you would like to prepare more than the occasional meal at home during your stay. Parking is on the street, but always available. Quiet hours from 11 pm to 7 am. The main bathroom/shower upstairs is shared, and there is a half bathroom on the first floor. Interaction with GuestsI like to make sure that I'm available as needed by my guests. Whether you need a restaurant recommendation or a lift to the train station downtown, I'm mindful of what it is that you might need most to make your stay better. Sometimes it's quiet undisturbed space to unwind after a day meetings and interviews, and sometimes it's a long chat over coffee and breakfast—every stay is a little different. The NeighborhoodWhitneyville is the old village that housed the workers at Ely Whitney's cotton mill. I live a couple of blocks from the "center" which has a well-appointed food market, a bookstore/cafe, a gourmet bistro, a homey pub, and a marvelous soup and cupcake shop. The neighborhood is filled with 1920s houses, is safe and walkable, and has a great vibe. Larger grocery stores and chain restaurants are close by on Dixwell ave. Getting AroundIt usually takes no more than 15 minutes door to door by car to get anywhere in downtown New Haven (including parking). The route is a straight run down Whitney Ave. right to the green and the heart of the Yale campus. There is half-hour to hourly bus service to downtown New Haven from a stop approximately four walked blocks from my door. Although we don't serve breakfast upon your arrival, for a long term stay or short, we will start you off with breakfast items such as coffee, tea, creamer, milk, juice, cereals, bagels, muffins, assorted jams or jellies. Being that we own a hair salon we provide a variety of Paul Mitchell shampoos and conditioners in the event you don't bring your own. You'll also find bars of locally handcrafted goats milk soap or other variety that you can keep. Stephanie also provides glycerin soaps that she herself handcrafts. Towels, wash cloths and bath puffs (brand new) are available. We also provide napkins, toilet paper, paper towel, trash bags, dish soap, hand soap, sponges, and cleaning items to start. Feel free to bring your own bedding, if not we have bedding available. Interaction with GuestsMy daughter and I are very sociable people and enjoy talking and dining with our guests but also respect their privacy and understand if they are not interested in doing that. We've kept in touch with past guests who have stayed with us and they are always welcome to come back. We do have a 7 year old friendly Yellow Lab that would not enter the guest space unless invited to do so. She does freely roam the yard for she is contained by an invisible fence. We are very conscientious of her behavior and whereabouts at all times. The washer and dryer is for all in the household to share and a schedule will be worked if you are staying more than 2 days. The NeighborhoodWe love where we live because it is peaceful, quiet, picturesque and very private. Our home is set in a wooded area on 3 acres of land that abuts water company property. Being that is located on a main road this gives access to all surrounding towns. Our neighbors are very caring, helpful and low key people that we have great relationships with. We are directly located on a road that gives direct access to downtown New Haven in 20-25 minutes give or take the traffic. Bethany is full of hiking trails for those so inclined and numerous horse ranches. We are protected and served by our local State Police and Voluntary Fire Department and there are four places in town to get meals, they are all very good and reputable. People travel from surrounding towns to dine at our Country Corner Diner or Billy's Ice Cream and Market Place. There is a Walmart SuperCenter in Naugatuck that provides everything you need and groceries too. Overall, you would not be deprived of what you need! Getting AroundWe have no public transportation here in Bethany so guests would need a vehicle to travel around. Downtown New Haven has a lot to offer as far as restaurants, theatre, shopping, museums and Yale University. A day trip to New York City is possible from The Union Train Station in New Haven right to Grand Central Station in Manhattan. Uber or Taxis are available but may become costly. Other Things to NoteIf guest(s) need a monthly stay basis the price is adjusted and discounted according to length of time. Washer and dryer are shared with homeowner and a schedule will be worked out. This space is not for permanent living use. Traveling professional people such as medical technicians may need to extend their stay time month to month and we will do best to accommodate you in that fashion. Please just give us some idea of how long so we can book accordingly.
