The SpaceSweet little 1900-era house just steps away from the beautiful mouth of the Columbia River, in the village of Chinook, Washington. Here you may awake to the sound of Bald Eagles calling as they return to their nests, or the lapping of the waves as the tide comes in. Make your coffee and walk to the beach to enjoy the river and watch ships on their way to Astoria or Portland. The beach is great for kids, as the waves aren't too big and the river water is much warmer the ocean. House Amenities: The kitchen has basic supplies (oil, flour, some spices), drip coffee maker, microwave oven, pots and pans, flatware, dishes, etc... Phone with local service Wifi Internet access Upright piano in the living room. There is no T.V. in the house. If you need movies, you'll need to bring a laptop, ipad or other viewer. Bedroom #2 has a queen bed, the other 2 bedrooms have double beds. The living room couch makes out into a queen-sized bed with a built-in inflatable mattress. One of the upstairs rooms is decorated as a young girl's room. The rooms have dressers but no closets; there is a closet in the upstairs hall. All bedrooms are upstairs, and the stairway is a narrow spiral. The bathroom is downstairs. Guests with difficulty moving about (or guests who do not wish to go downstairs for the bathroom at night) may be more comfortable in the living room sofa-sleeper. Across the river from our house is the bustling, charming little town of Astoria, with farmer's markets, music festivals and plenty of fine dining. Ten minutes west on 101 and you can enjoy the ocean beaches of the Long Beach Peninsula. Some favorite places and activities are: Fishing (salmon, sturgeon, rock fish, bottom fish) - go out on a charter boat or cast from shore. Clam digging Fine dining Beach combing* Hiking around North Head, Cape Disappointment, Fort Columbia and Leadbetter State Park Go to the Lewis and Clark Museum Play and picnic at Waikiki Beach Bird-watching (everywhere) U-pick blueberries in Long Beach Go-carts and bumper cars in Long Beach Cranberry museum in Long Beach Go to the International Kite Museum, then go fly a kite! * Please be aware, this coast has a serious rip tide that can get the better of even experienced swimmers. Adults should not go in past their knees, and children should not go past their ankles and should be watched at all times. The river behind the house does not have this rip tide and is a joy to play in. Guest AccessEntire house, front and back yard, and parking area. The back yard does not extend past the hedge, so please walk to the right of the hedge to get to the beach. Interaction with GuestsI am available via text; my sister lives close by and can stop by if needed. The NeighborhoodWe are located in the small village of Chinook. Chinook has a local (tiny) espresso house, a small store, a bar, a restaurant, and the post office. These are all west (down river) of our house. To the east, you'll find great hiking and views at Fort Columbia. A 12-min drive over the bridge takes you to Astoria, with lots of fantastic coffee houses, restaurants and breweries. Drive 10 min. west, and you will find lots to do on the Long Beach Peninsula - restaurants, fishing, beach combing, berry-picking and more. This is truly a beautiful area with so much to offer. Getting AroundWithin Chinook, you can walk to "town". Other than that, a car is recommended. There is extremely limited public transportation. Royal Cab Co. in Astoria is the only taxi service we know of. Other Things to NoteThe village of Chinook has a small convenience grocery store. For more substantial shopping, there is a larger IGA in Seaview called "Sids", which is 12 min. from the house. Across the bridge in Astoria there are two options: the Astoria Co-op (15 min away), and Safeway (19 min away). In Warrenton, there is a large Fred Meyer (16 min. away) that has a decent grocery section. There is also a Costco in Warrenton (19 min. away). We usually go to a combination of the Co-op and Fred Meyer's. Go to the Blue Scorcher in Astoria if you want delicious bread and cardamon rolls.
