Interaction with GuestsStick and Millie are fulltime residents of Harkers Island, and live right next door to the 'Beach Barn'. We feel that this might make vacationing easier for questions or inquiries about attractions, rates or other activities in or around Harkers Island and the Carteret County area. The cottage has been in the family for several years, and is now available for vacation rental. Stick grew up in and around the Wake County, NC area, while Millie grew up here in Carteret County. We both love this area, and would very much like to share it with folks needing just a place to getaway for a bit, or families who would rather spend quality time with each other in a family-oriented setting.

Interaction with GuestsOne of us is almost always on the Island. Brad is the Pastor of the Methodist Church on Harkers Island. Suzanne is a PTA doing physical therapy with folks in Moorhead City and also teaches a normal and senior's aerobics class at a local gym. (She would welcome you to her class, Tuesdays and Thursdays. (Eastern Athletics in Beaufort - about 25 min away) The NeighborhoodWe are on the Island that is unique from many others. It is the headquarters of the Cape Lookout National Seashore that stretches 42 miles up the coast. It has the history of being an isolated Island where folks made their living fishing and building boats. There are still many boat builders on the island that build small and up to 50 and 60 foot boats one plank at a time. They are craftsmen and you can drive around the island and see and maybe meet some of these folks if you are so inclined. You will note that folks from the Island speak with a dialect of English that sounds more British than southern. They have a downeast brogue that is natural to them. We are the one's who talk differently. They are very friendly and hospitable and that is one of the reasons we love the Island. Be sure to look up on the web about the National Seashore and also the Core Sound Museum. There are three great restaurants on the Island, two are a quarter mile down the road, the other you passed on the left just as you came onto the Island. Getting AroundOn the island of only 5 miles long you may want to walk or ride a bike. There is parking also anywhere you go for free. The ferry comes and goes all day from 8 to 5pm from the end of the Island. No charge for parking etc. There are also trails, woods, kayak launch, Kayak Rentals, boat launches for free, and paid boat launches. We often get the question, "can we walk to the beach?" The answer is: Be sure to look at a map of Harkers Island and see that Harkers Island is located in the "Sound" which is not the ocean, though we do have a small beach near the bridge, that is calm "sound" water, that comes in from the ocean, but it is not typical ocean waves. The 42 miles of beach is accessible by ferry and so worth the ride, which in itself is great. You can walk the mile or so so the little beach on the island, but there is parking there too and you would likely drive. Once you see the amazing beaches of Cape Lookout and Shakelford you may be spoiled to typical touristy beaches. But if you still want that kind, Atlantic beach is a short drive off the island, Fort Macon Beach and so on. Some folks do a day at the cape and lighthouse and another to Shakelford with the wild horses and millions of sea shells to find. And another day to the traditional beaches of Atlantic Beach etc. You can access them all while staying on Harkers Island, but not by walking. Other Things to NoteWIFI password is: islandlife There is also a Ethernet cable you can plug in your computer direct. Look to the right of the TV or behind it. ——————————————————- Welcome to 818 Cape Lookout Drive. We want your visit to be as best it can be so feel free to call, text and be in touch with us anytime: (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) Brad or (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) Suzanne Restaurants on the Island: Seaside Galley ((PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) Good food and economical options and variety from Seafood to Hamburgers to Pizza.... Phone orders ahead and or drive through available. Left out of driveway, about a mile, see it on the right, attached to the gas station, just as you came onto the Island. Fish Hook Grill ((PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) (URL HIDDEN) for menu Right out of the driveway a quarter mile, on the right side. Heather and crew serve up great food. Captain’s Choice ((PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) (URL HIDDEN) Across from Fish Hook Grill on the left. Gail and Steve will be there to greet you and serve up a nice buffet or meal to order. TV is all through the Roku (Internet). Netflix and Amazon Prime, Hundreds of TV shows, live News, Hundreds of Movies all included. To Power up TV (Two ways to do it: ) With remote or on the right side of the TV Remote has a power button, push and hold a couple seconds. Then wait 10 seconds of so before pushing again to let it come on, before turning it back off etc. ( Once on, the only other buttons on the tv type remote that you use is the volume. On the right side of the TV are manual buttons. Top Button is on and off. Those below are marked. The only one’s you should likely need are the on off and the volume buttons. Or possibly the “input” which is at the bottom if it was mistakenly changed. You will need to use the “input” button which is the bottom one, if anyone swaps the input from the HDMI to anything else. If it accidently gets switched, then with the TV powered on, just push that bottom button on the side of the TV for input, and each time you push it, it will move to the next selection. You want it to go to the HDMI input. That has the Roku attached. You should see Roku come up on the screen when you have the right one.. The Roku remote is the one you will use to change channels and programing. Once TV is powered up and you see the Roku logo on the screen you can choose the Netflix or Amazon Prime buttons on the remote to go directly to one of those, all programing you can access is free. Or you can hit the top right button, which is the home button, and use the arrows buttons to navigate to different channels on the Roku. For example click right arrow to move to the right, then click again and the down arrows, till you land on CBS News or SKY News and then click the “OK” button. To get out of that program channel, just click the top right home button anytime and select something else. For movies and TV series, go to Netflix and then select 818 Island Rd, then just look through all the options, click on the one you want to watch. Water Access: There are many public assess points to the water around the island. The docks and yards you see from the Bungalow are not public. The public locations are: At the bridge coming on the island it is the best boat launch area and free. Park extra cars to the far side to the west and not in the car with trailer parking spots. The other end of the Island is a National Park and open to the public, paid by your taxes and there is a kayak launching area, trails with small beaches. You can fish off the end of the concrete walkway over the rocks. There is a nice dock as you walk a half mile down the trail behind the Park Service Headquarters. Back to the bridge side, the causeway has a public dock for fishing, and you can fish anywhere either side of the bridges, (just not off the bridge itself). Many folks with boats, still prefer the good fishing around the bridges off the rocks for the best catch. As you go from the Bungalow toward the East (right out of driveway) a mile or two along the way, you will see a few small public access areas on the right side, that have signs that tell who they are sponsored by. The best of all beaches and shore is taking the ferry over to the cape or shakelford, where there are miles and miles of beach and shells and water to walk it and swim in. (Please remember this is a water view, property you are renting. The homes and docks on the water you can see are private. The owners are very nice but also are very clear that their property and docks are not for public use. Due to some bad experiences in the past they have asked us to be sure our guests know that going onto their property is not allowed without a specific invitation from them that they initiate. They ask that folks not come to their home to make request to use their docks and yards etc. Thanks for respecting them and their property. ) Please call us if any questions or any way we can be hospitable and helpful during your stay. Brad n Suzanne (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) or (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) We ask you to be sure to let us know that you have arrived on the island, and are at the house, even if we have given you a code to get in the house in advance. There may be important information to make your stay even better. Also please let us know when you are leaving or immediately after you have departed, send us a note to let us know. Thank you so much! BW/SW

We think it reasonable to let such folks know in advance what our expectations are. Thanks again, Brad and Suz
