You will also have access to our very friendly, non-allergenic Golden Doodle, Asher (a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle). He is a presence, so if you don't like dogs, you may want to keep a wide birth. If you own a dog, we can set up a vacation visit for your pooch with Asher's dog-loving sitters who offer no cages, large fenced-in rural properties, and an overall good time. Asher cries when they bring him home. I live in the house too--and will be at home during your visit; but we close off some doors when we have guests to give us all some privacy. That said, I'm happy to host and am available for anything you need, including conversation! Meeting you is a treat! The living room, dining room, porch, front hall yard and gazebo are shared spaces, and there is plenty of parking--a rarity in Harpers Ferry. The NeighborhoodWe moved to Harper's Ferry a few years ago to get away from the DC rat race. Here we've found kind and caring neighbors, incredible natural beauty including hiking trails, biking, charming small towns (especially ours), tons of fascinating American history -- and peace and quiet. The Appalachian trail comes right into town, and Harpers Ferry is a major watering hole for "through hikers"-- people hiking from Georgia to Maine. River rafting companies are a ten-minute drive from town. The area is historic: "Lower town" remains in quaint civil-wart-era style with both operating and historic shops and restaurants. Some highlights you can still see around town: The arsenal that John Brown raided in 1859, in an attempt to launch an armed slave revolt. The key battlefields in the 1860's that pitted Union and Confederate armies against each other. (Bolivar Heights and Antietam are among the famous.) The buildings that housed Storer College, a historically black college that operated from 1865 until 1955. Frequent civil war reenactments by the National Park Service. They even shoot canon! Among many interesting local towns are Shepherdstown (the home of Shepherd University) and Charles town (where John Brown was executed.) Both feature historic sites, cute shops, and a variety of restaurants. Getting AroundThere is a shuttle into town -- but you can just walk! You can borrow our bikes when available too. You can get-one day passes at a gym/pool at Shepherd University in Sheperdstown. There is an outdoor pool at close-by KOA Campground. Other Things to NoteWorkers lived in 740 House during the civil war--you can see the remainders of this period in the stone basement, which remained after the house burned down and was rebuilt in the early 1900's. Our place is called "a four-square" house, referring to the room arrangement and the traditional large front foyer. If you lie in the hammock at night, the stars are brilliant, and you may hear the Potomac River below.

The SpaceCome stay for a wonderful spring weekend, winery tours, rafting/fishing the Potomac! A secluded stone cabin, just 50 minutes from Washington, DC and only minutes from Historic Harper's Ferry, a half-dozen of Virginia's finest wineries and access points to the Appalachian Trail and Potomac River. Our small home includes a separate Finnish sauna and outdoor shower. The house has central AC/heat, 2 working fireplaces, and a full kitchen. We are just three minutes from whitewater rafting and tubing on the Potomac River. The house is secluded with only two neighbor's within 200 meters. However, there is both casual and upscale dinning within 20 minutes of our place. The MARC train departs daily from Harper's Ferry and travels to Washington, DC. Our place has been completely remodeled with a modern flair--including a cathedral ceiling in living room, stone walls and custom stairways. It's very small, but has 4 levels, making it seem larger. The creek is steps from the door sounds very nice and helps cool the house in the evenings. Book a rafting or tubing trip with Harper's Ferry Adventure Center. Note: You should bring drinking water because, while ours is perfectly safe, it is well water that has high mineral content and smells a bit funny. In the Spring we have lady bugs and stink bugs that always seem to be there no matter how much we vacuum them up. We'll get them all up the day you arrive, but be prepared to suck up a few more while there. Guest AccessYou will have the entire place to yourselves. Interaction with GuestsWe are not living on the property, so we probably will not get a chance to meet. Our care takers are close by, so if you are looking for a party house or think of inviting many 'extra' guests, please move to the next listing.

The SpaceThe spacious Victorian house (built in 1890) was named "Point of View" because of its commanding view of the Potomac River. Though the view has since been diminished by houses built later along the ridge, Point of View remains one of the iconic houses of the village. The house, featured on the cover of This Old House Magazine, is located on a quiet street that leads to an overlook of the spectacular confluence of the rivers. The Old Town is an 8 minute walk down the hill and the Appalachian Trail is 5 minutes away. The house is traditionally but comfortably furnished. The ample, well-equipped kitchen is bright and inviting with a breakfast table and adjoining formal dining room. Comfortable beds in the 4 bedrooms: 1 king, 2 queen, and 1 full. The attic suite has its own bathroom and the 3 second floor bedrooms share a bath. The main floor has a powder room with shower. In addition to the large front porch and patio in the rear, the second floor has a very pleasant screened sitting porch.

The SpaceThis one-of-a-kind vacation rental is located in a 2-1/2 story brick federal-period building built in the 1830's, and renovated in 2004-2005. The house shares the building with a family-style restaurant (Potomac Grille), and one of the best retail shops in town (The Vintage Lady). The house was originally 2 townhouses, and the center walls were removed in the 1970s to create a large open space on the 1st floor. While the house's exterior painting scheme reflects this original configuration and looks like 2 separate units, the vacation rental spans both spaces (see photo). The building was used during the civil war by both Confederate and Union Armies, primarily as an infirmary/hospital, and is a stop on the Harpers Ferry Ghost Tour! The first floor of the house features a large open living room/dining room, a full modern kitchen, 1/2 bath, and a large porch with fantastic mountain and river views and views of Harpers Ferry gap. The inside space features hard-wood floors, exposed brick walls, an exposed beam ceiling (many of the beams are original hand-hewn), and large windows looking onto the mountains and the Potomac River. There is a TV, DVD player, VCR, games and toys, and a 10-seat dining table on the 1st floor. A highchair is available upon request. In addition to modern amenities, the house is decorated in fantastic period antiques. The second floor has 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths and a laundry room w/ full-sized washer and dryer, and offers views of the Potomac River. The master bedroom has a Queen bed and a comfortable full-size futon (comfortable for 1 adult or 2 children). The second bedroom has a Queen bed, and the 3rd bedroom has a twin/full bunk bed (twin on top; full on bottom). The configuration is ideal for two families (4 adults and up to 5 kids), 2-3 couples, or 6-7 friends! All three bedrooms have TVs and DVD players and comfy sheets, mattresses and pillows. The building sits atop a steep hill, and there are 65 stairs leading down to the 2 parking spaces reserved for the vacation rental in the rear of the building. The front-door to the house is at street-level, so door-to-door drop-off of luggage is possible. Interaction with GuestsWe have a lockbox, so you may let yourselves into the house at your convenience (subject to check-in/check-out times). Typically, we do not see our guests during their stay (we like to give guests their privacy!), but are close by and available to address any needs if required. The NeighborhoodWhile many rentals claim to be in Harpers Ferry, please take note that there is a HUGE difference between having a Harpers Ferry address, and actually being located in the incorporated, historic town of Harpers Ferry! We are right in the middle of the historic incorporated town of Harpers Ferry - literally on top of the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, shops, restaurants, museums, hiking, etc. Other Things to NoteWhile we are new to AirBnB, we have been renting this house as a vacation rental since 2009. Please see VRBO's website (listing 265656) for reviews! Our rates include a 6% WV sales tax, and 6% Harpers Ferry Room Occupancy tax. Dogs are welcome! A $30 pet fee applies.

The Demory-Wortman House is the centerpiece of the working organic farm area of the Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship, a 501(c)(3)non-profit organization. The original house, built in 1848, was a two-story log cabin that shows considerable German influence typical of the time period. The Demory-Wortman House has been nicely renovated and is outfitted with comfortable, rustic furnishings. It also serves as a wonderful location for group events such as weddings, retreats, family vacations, educational seminars, etc. The house consists of 5 bedrooms, two meeting areas, a full kitchen, a full bathroom, two half bathrooms, and two living rooms.
