With a population of just less than 500 as of the 2010 census, Harrisville is a small town with plenty to offer its visitors. The village is surrounded by parks, preserves, forests and historical sites, and Lake Huron provides some of the best fishing and most spectacular sunrises in the central United States. The beach is beautiful and very quiet, great beach walks and swimming. We enjoy walking or riding bikes to town (1/4 mile), Views of the lake and access to it is everywhere. Be sure to stop at Ice Cream Parlor, Coffee Shop, two restaurants and gift shops. 5 Golf courses within 30 miles. Accommodations: Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 1 Bath (Sleeps 3-6) Nestled on the shores of Lake Huron, Bear Cottage will rekindle childhood memories of an 'Up North' vacation. This is a 1600 square foot cottage, recently updated and professionally decorated. Each over-sized room provides an ever changing view of the big lake. The cottage has a separate lake facing living and dinning room and an additional 16x18 rear facing family room. The family room with a queen sized futon is easily converted to a third bedroom. Enjoy an early morning walk along the beach as animal friends return to their forest homes. Scrabble away the day with a glass of Chardonnay as birds visit numerous lakeside feeding stations. Conclude the day roasting hot dogs over a beach-side fire. Open windows, sea breezes and a visit to the hot tub will invite restful sleep. Enjoy Bear cottage. The property is located on Lake Huron approximately 2 miles East of US 23. Nightly the solitude of the location is interrupted by the local train as it trundles along. By its faint muffled sound you will know its 11pm.....and time to throw another log on the fire. The train is about a mile away. The local cottages are family owned with many being passed down from generation to generation. Some are old and rustic, some updated and others recently constructed. My home has been enlarged and updated in traditional notty pine fashion. Everyone is friendly. Except for the most ardent polar bears , the lake rarely warms until August. Outdoor actives are many. Open windows, sea breezes and a visit to the hot tub will invite restful sleep. Should a more active day be in store, visit Loggers Trace or White Pine National golf course. Both courses are reasonably priced less than 50 dollars. The courses are both playable and of very high quality with White Pine being an all bent grass arrangement. Catch a dinner trout from nearby ponds. Bike to nearby locales on a recently repaved and widened US 23. Visit the acclaimed NOAA shipwreck or Besser museum in nearby Alpena. You could even dive these wrecks or kayak to nearby islands. Test your appetite on a 'Mountain Burger' from the nearby Mountain Inn pub. Visit Negwegon....the longest undeveloped beachfront in the Lower Peninsula. Play tennis on the nearby Harrisville municipal courts. So......turn the cellphone off. Quiet your mind. Return to your childhood. Fully experience nature. Visit Bear Cottage. Please note my favorite month at Bear Cottage is September. They days are still very warm but the early chill of approaching Autumn provides for excellent sleeping. No smoking please. Hot tub use limited to adults only. The SpaceThere literarily is no man-made noise at this wilderness resort, except for the sound you make. No phone or television. You can have the place entirely to yourself, or invite a few friends. Four person maximum for comfort. Loons often wake guests at dawn. Owls put guests to sleep (or wake them up) some nights. Coyotes sometime can be heard howling, barking or yelping in the evenings or late at night. Nominal additional charge for firewood burned. No power lines within more than a mile, electricity is solar powered or by generator, if you miss the noise of the city, or want extra power. Excellent trout and perch fishing in River during right time of year with occasional rainbow trout, pike and walleye taken. Hubbard Lake offers walleye, bass, pike, perch and other species. Typically, this remote sanctuary is used as a refuge. However, hunting can be made available in various seasons for wild turkey, bear, grouse, ducks, deer, bobcat, and various small game, but understand that rarely does management allow visitors to hunt as we prefer to photograph the wildlife. For additional charges, a chef and maid service will come at designated times. Fishing and hunting guide services can be provided, if you can persuade management to allow the harvesting of some of the abundant wildlife. Guest AccessYou have access to the beautiful, off-grid solar powered cabin, 150 acres of private property, which includes an estimated 1/2 miles of frontage to the spring-fed West Branch River, which can be navigated by canoe, kayak or boat to the Little North River, Buff Creek, Comstock Creek and beautiful Hubbard Lake, which is some 13-square miles large. Lake Huron beaches and hiking trails are accessible by car. Wildlife viewing, fishing, bird watching, huckleberry fields and relaxing on deck or hammock are just a few activities available. Interaction with GuestsYou can have total privacy with only check-in and check-out service, or you can purchase full service chef, maid service, guide services, bar tendering service, etc. for additional charges. We seek to please and accommodate your desires, relaxation and style. The NeighborhoodThere are no neighbors. Nearest cabin on road that gets you to my place is more than a mile away. If you have a quest to get away from the hustle of the world, then this is truly the place to be. The freshness of the air with the wind whispering through the pines. The silence is wonderful. Star gazing is amazing on a clear night. Wildlife photograph opportunities.

The SpaceThis 3 bedtoom space ia a wonderful central location for the many family-friendly activities which Northeast Michigan is famous for. From self-guided Lighthouse tours to fishing abundant area trout streams, boating and canoeing along the Ausable River, swimming or picnicking at the pristine public parks and beaches of Lake Huron - and so much more - the Old Country Church is a perfect vacation home-base for the places and adventures that are waiting for you to explore in Michigan's great north country! Bring your fishing pole and fish off the bridge in the east branch of the Pine River which is just a quick walk down the road. This is also a unique retreat place for writers, poets, and photographers. This 125 year old church has been comfortably renovated into a unique country getaway with a large yard, fruit trees, and a small vegetable garden. Dogs are welcome, on an individual basis only. I want to discuss this with guests first to make sure that dogs are well behaved and non-destructive. A chain link fenced outdoor dog yard (10' × 20', 6' high) with a large dog house is available for use. This space is uniquely located in a documented Michigan ghost town, which was once known as a productive lumbering town until the early 1900's when the local post office finally closed due to the dramatic decrease in population once lumbering interests were exhausted. The Old Country Church is one of the last 4 remaining original buildings in this ghost town. It was built from the lumber which was milled right here in this area the 1800's. Slight blade marks can still be seen on some of the boards of the newly restored and refinished hard wood floors. Curiously, Fifth and Sixth Street (which still host street signs) mark roads that gently lead to nowhere and fade away into fields of forgotten memories. It is on one of those streets that the Old Country Church is located, there on the left-behind corner of Sixth and Main. The kitchen, located up on the former "altar" area, is equipped with brand new appliances (summer 2016); a stainless steel stove, refrigerator, and dishwasher. The living room has comfortable couches and bookshelves filled with a variety of titles for your reading pleasure. A smart TV is provided as well. Cozy, modest bedrooms each accommodate 2 guests and are as described below: - Master Bedroom has a queen size bed with a small closet. - First Guest Bedroom has a double bed, no closet. - Second Guest Bedroom has 2 twin beds and a small closet. In this room, one of the twin beds is an extra comfortable adjustable bed - a guest favorite! The living room has a futon for extra guest sleeping. There is one shared bathroom. It is modern and has a shower and a bath tub. Because this place is nestled so near to National Forest land, the surrounding countryside is burgeoning with wildlife. Guests enjoy bird sightings that include cranes, wild turkeys, geese, hawks, owls and Bald Eagles - just to name a few. Herds of deer can be seen both near and far away. At night, the spectacular and nearly unobstructed views of northern and western skies resembles a dark sky park, and it is not uncommon to see the northern lights. Coyotes are also frequently heard howling at night in the distance, and that becomes the perfect time for telling stories outdoors around the fire ring! Enjoy the use of the large yard with shady pines and antique apple trees. A fire ring with a grill top allows you to build a modest fire and cook out, but please observe seasonal restrictions. A picnic table and yard furniture are also available for you to relax with and enjoy. Depending on the time of year and availability, you are most welcome to help yourself to fresh veggies from the small vegetable garden. There is plenty of parking for up to 4 vehicles. Motor home parking is also available (self contained only, separate extra fee required, please contact me for more information). Beautifully scenic and paved country roads invite you to walk the "4 mile square", or ride your bike even further. Bicycles and helmets (for adults only) are available for use by request. This is a country getaway at its best, far away from traffic, city lights and urban hustle! The pace is slow and uncomplicated here. The Old Country Church is located just a few miles from Huron National Forest, and 8 miles from the city of Harrisville, Lake Huron, Harrisville State Park, and beautiful Harrisville Harbor. There are many outdoor activities within a short ride - swimming, boating, hunting, hiking, Michigan's very first Quilt Trail, seasonal Farmers Markets, bird-watching (the habitat of the rare Kirkland Warbler is located only about 45 minutes away!), biking, apple picking, antiquing, or a visit to Amish country - just to name a few. And, on Labor Day weekend, the city of Harrisville hosts the 2nd largest craft show in the state of Michigan! Other nice nearby towns (within about 45 minutes or less) include Lincoln, Alpena, Oscoda, Hubbard Lake, Tawas, Mio, and Glennie. WiFi internet connection is not available. If you have a smart phone with a plan from a company that services our area, you will usually have a good 4G connection, but that does vary. Verizon works fairly well here. 80 acre hunting land rental available for an extra fee. Guest AccessGuests have access to entire living space. Relax and enjoy! First floor entry room is also available for use for coats, footwear and luggage. Interaction with GuestsI want you to be comfortable and to enjoy your stay. If you need assistance with anything, please let me know. Most of the time, there is someone available to visit with you personally - as members of my family live both to the east and to west of the Old Country Church - and only 1/4 mile away, either way, so we are always in sight! The NeighborhoodThere are neighbors nearby. Other Things to NoteThis is a rural area. Walking and bicycling on country roads is a favorite pastime, and the surrounding roads are mostly paved. We are located about 10 miles west of Lake Huron and the charming little city of Harrisville. Oscoda is located approximately 25 minutes south, and Alpena is located approximately 40 minutes north. Huron National Forrest is just a few miles away. Be mindful of the fact that while the address is listed as being "Harrisville", the Old Country Church is not located in Harrisville proper. Remember, the Old Country Church really is in a ghost town, and over 100 years ago, Harrisville picked up the postal route in the early 1900's when the post office here closed. So, the Old Country Church is actually located about 8 miles west of Harrisville - but don't let the location confuse you! 3 night minimum stay on Labor Day Weekend, Memorial Day weekend, 4th of July weekend, and opening day for hunting season. 80 acre hunting land rental available for an extra fee.

Following reviews are from our previous VRBO listing, and from Guestbook: * June 2014 from Bowling Green Would love to return! * October 2013 from Deb Peaceful Retreat Location. We had a quiet, peaceful, incredible time of relaxation and just plain chillin'. It was just what we needed to be re-energized. Everything we needed was there making the stay one stop...no need for running. Would recommend this for anyone seeking a retreat setting. * August 2013 from U.P. A Cherished Paradise This place is truly a hidden treasure! Few places are left in the world where one can find quiet and mostly empty stretches of a sandy shore. Tucked into the trees, this cottage provides privacy, yet with an upfront view of the ever-changing lake. We loved listening to the waves crashing on the shore every night and watching the sun rise each morning without even getting out of bed! We enjoyed both bike riding via road as well as beach walking the easy 2 mile stretch the historic Sturgeon Point Lighthouse. Tennis courts a few miles into town, song singing at the campfire under the full moon, body surfing the waves that came up one windy day, and most of all, enjoying a quiet paradise on the shore of a beautiful fresh water sea. The cottage itself was a delight, very well maintained and a very comfortable atmosphere to spend inside when tired of the beach. Wouldn't mind a cozy fall or spring time stay either, with the indoor fireplace and sky lights, it sure makes a great place for the variety of weather that Michigan has to offer! Though there was no internet, it was a good reminder to spend quality time together and less on Facebook or e-mail!! This will always be a cherished place in our memory, and we hope to return frequently in the future. * August 2013 from Family Ties Best weekend Ever at the Beach House Very cute, and clean home.
