We are centrally located in Puna, 15 miles south of Hilo, a few miles outside of the quaint town of Pahoa with all its restaurants and shops. Spend your days exploring the near by warm ponds, black sand beach, snorkeling, hiking, restaurants, waterfalls, Volcanoes National Park, current lava flows, Mauna Kea summit, museums, and much more. You can relax on the over sized bamboo furniture in the large screened-in living room and hear the songs of the rainforests' birds and frogs as you look out onto the lush jungle landscape.. The bedroom has a comfortable queen size Sealy posture pedic mattress. High thread count organic linens are provided for your comfort. Hand crafted, custom double doors lead out onto the lanai. The kitchen has a full size refrigerator, stove/oven, custom cabinets and tiles, pots, pans, toaster, coffee maker, blender, plates, glasses, bowls, cutlery, coffee and coffee grinder, tea, condiments and spices. Sliding glass doors lead out onto the lanai. There's a phone, internet, washer/dryer, outdoor shower, bathrobes, bar-B-que, boogie board, snorkel gear, beach towels, tent, guidebooks and other thoughtfully provided special touches to make your stay very comfortable and relaxing. The art nouveau inspired bathroom features an antique clawfoot bathtub and a pedestal sink. Fluffy towels and bubbles are provided. Located in a rare old growth jungle/rainforest area of Puna with many native and exotic plants and trees, yet still just a mile from the highway, 200 ft. off a paved road. (unpaved road is maintained and fine for rental cars) The perfect location to get away from it all but still be close enough to all the sights, restaurants and activites. Many other places you share the house or property with others. This is 2 acres all to yourself, beautifully landscaped with many extra touches to make your stay more relaxing and enjoyable. We are located close to Volcanoes National Park and Kalapana where the active lava flows down the volcano and meets the ocean. This is one of the world's most active volcanoes and viewing is quite easy and accessable. The park is other worldly and the flows are fantastic. This 3 bedroom, 2 bath home offers the vacationer an up close and personal ocean experience! You can't get much closer to the ocean without being in it! It lulls you to sleep at night and the sunrises are so incredibly awesome - you will want to get up early even if you are on vacation! In the winter months, you can hear and see the whales that come in quite close because the ocean is deep in front of the property. This is a great spot to catch fish from the bluff and cook right on the barbecue! Decorated island style with rattan furnishings and overhead ceiling fans in all the rooms, the home stays very comfortable all year! Sometimes you might even need a sweathshirt in the winter months! This home is centrally located and it is just a short drive to Volcano National Park, the Kapoho tide pools, and Hilo International Airport. The location is superb for the traveler wanting to set up base for the ultimate Big Island adventure. The oceanfront lanai is the place you will probably want to hang out after your day trips! The NeighborhoodA short distance from Hilo, far enough to get away from the distractions of the city. It's an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the Hawaiian lifestyle, while still being minutes away from modern conveniences. Our property is roughly 1.2 miles from the ocean, there are some beautiful tide pools and cliffs nearby. The neighborhood shares the land with the jungle. You will see geckos, lizards, frogs; and you'll hear even more. Pictures truly cannot do the land justice. Getting AroundWe recommend a car for getting around. There is a bus stop roughly one mile from the home. While you do not need a 4-wheel drive vehicle for our property, they do come in handy on the island in general. We have a company that we use for car rentals for a great deal, contact us if you would like the information. Other Things to NoteThe home is on a water catchment system. This means we collect and store rain water for later usage, hence the water conservation notes. The water is perfectly safe for bathing and washing of dishes. In the event that tank runs out, please let us know. We keep two tanks hooked up and can walk you through flipping to the other tank. Please understand we live in the jungle. There is a wide variety of small wildlife active at all sorts of hours. At night, the jungle comes alive with noise. It is just minutes to picturesque lava cliffs perfect for whale watching and turtle sightings, to little known hiking trails, or to the historic village of Pahoa with its quaint shops and choice of ethnic restaurants. Our family, long time residents living on site, will be very happy to point you in exciting directions. Three comfortable, one bedroom and studio size, family style cottages, a beautiful, forty foot, saline pool...a private regulation tennis court ... a picturesque gazebo..and a mini playground, all on our six acre estate, are available for your family’s use. KIPUKA'OHIA COTTAGE which sleeps up to four guests (but we recommend 3 adults, is set in a small forest of legendary 'Ohia trees. Uli Kai Hale is a 2 bedroom, 2 bath, fully modern home that offers not only 1,960 SF of interior living space, it provides an environment with a unique blend of natural splendor and modern conveniences for you to inhabit. The property: The site is entered from a paved road onto a U shaped driveway that leads to a porte cochere, large enough to park two cars. From there, a covered walkway leads to the open air entry garden and the front door. From the moment you enter the house, the sight and sound of the ocean demands your attention. The property has the following components: The yard: The front yard is nicely landscaped with trees, bushes, shrub and planting beds for vegetables. The rear (ocean side) yard is mostly planted with salt tolerant grass that offers a pleasant lawn area where you can sit, or lay down on and enjoy the ocean. All the landscaped areas are speckled with natural lava formations that signify the true uniqueness of an environment where fresh lava flowed not too long ago. The porte cochere is 28’ wide and 20’ long. It is attached to the owner’s locked private space and has a cement floor. It is part of the rental space and provides covered parking for two cars. The residence: Most of the 1,960 square feet of space is taken by the Great Room. It contains seven areas. Starting on the right side of the entry door and moving counter clockwise around the Great Room are: •A small office space: Separated from the rest of the great room by a 4’ high wall, it has a work station made up of a slab of 2” thick mango that is over 7’ long. By the desk is the broadband connection cable and telephone. A printer is located on a shelf, under the desk. •A TV area: This backs up to the office space’s wall and has couch seating for three, that faces a 55” flat screen TV. There is also a DVD player, a cable box and a receiver in this area. •The conversation area has a large, sofa, chair and coffee table. •Bay window: the large bay window in the center of the ocean sidewall has a mattress for the cushion and is well lighted, providing an ideal spot to read a book or just daydream. •Dining area: The dining area has a table that will seat up to six comfortably. •Kitchen: The oversized kitchen includes a generous amount (over 20 lineal feet) of granite topped counter space, and more than ample amount of storage drawers for everything from silverware, dishes and glasses, to seasonings, barbecue tools, etc. There are also a side by side full sized refrigerator and freezer, a four burner electric stove and oven, microwave and large sink. Close by is a 4’x4’ food preparation island which includes a second sink. •Pantry: A large, walk-in pantry is adjacent to the kitchen and on its numerous shelves are supplies, tools and appliances, such a zojiroshi multi-function rice cooker, a large electric pot for slow cooking, an electric griddle, etc. The balance of the house is taken up by the two bedrooms and bathrooms. •Both bedrooms have queen sized beds and large walk-in closets. The master bedroom has an ocean view and an en suite bathroom. The bathroom has a 9’ granite counter with twin glass wash basins and a generous shower area. It also houses the clothes washer and dryer. •The second bathroom is accessible from both the second bedroom and the living room. It too offers a large granite countertop with two glass sinks and a large shower area. On the ocean side of the house are a lanai and a fully landscaped and manicured lawn, where guests can sit on the grass or lounge in a chair. When conditions are right, whales, dolphins, sea turtles, Nene geese and other species unique to Hawaii can be seen from the property. The maximum occupancy for this home is four persons, 2 per bedroom. Infants less than 12 months or younger are not counted and a pack and play for an infant is available upon request. Please let us know, when making a reservation, how many persons will be in your party. Depending on season, minimum stays of up to 3 to 7 nights may be required. Our grounds have lots of palm trees, many tropical flowers, a pond filled with lots of fish. As you enter the driveway, you will be greeted by our Buddha garden and nicely curved pathway. We strive to create a peaceful, serene setting in which people can relax and enjoy the magic of Hawaii. We are located between Hilo and Pahoa, about 20 minutes south of Hilo, and about 15 minutes from the historic town of Pahoa. Our newly paved road provides easy access to activities nearby. Pahoa is a charming town of yester-year. There are good restaurants, shopping, a museum, interesting farmers markets, and many friendly people. A little further past Pahoa, there is great snorkeling, warm ponds to soak in, surf breaks, great hikes and bike rides, and lots of great photo ops along the Kalapana Coast. In Hilo, you can be sunning at the beach while looking at a snow capped volcano (depending on the time of year), swim at a black sand beach and catch a glimpse of green sea turtles, dolphins and whales, snorkel at a shoreline reef and see our state fish, the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a. Hilo is also home to the world famous Hilo Farmers Market (which happens on Wednesdays and Saturdays) and in April, the internationally acclaimed Merry Monarch Festival, the world's biggest hula competition. Hilo offers some wonderful restaurants and shopping, museums, bars, traditional Japanese gardens, with lots of local arts & crafts in the Bayfront area. We are about an hour away from Volcano National Park, one of the largest national parks in the country. There you can hike, bike ride, picnic, bird watch, view amazing art at Volcano Art Center, tour Jagger Museum, or stop by the Visitor’s Center to get the latest from the park rangers. After dark, you can see the molten lava glow in Halemaumau Crater. If you prefer to explore the wilds of our Volcano Goddess, Pele and possibly catch of glimpse of her magical molten lava, that is possible too, depending on the flow activity during your visit. This is really an outdoor paradise, with lots of fun activities to do in a most beautiful setting. Our family, long time residents living on site, will be very happy to point you in exciting directions. Three comfortable, one bedroom and studio size, family style cottages, a beautiful, forty foot, saline pool...a private regulation tennis court ... a picturesque gazebo..and a mini playground, all on our six acre estate, are available for your family’s use. NAKUKUI COTTAGE, our lovely studio and perfect for two guests, is set amidst large lawns and graceful palm, near the solar heated pool and tennis court. It has a half sized but fully equipped kitchen, washer/dryer, cableTV/DVD player, private phone, ceiling fans and a full bath. There is a king sized bed in the single room as well as a sitting area. All linen is provided. The dining area is a private screened lanai. Barbeques are available. We live in a residential neighborhood just a couple of blocks from the main Puna highway 130. Our garden zen room, with queen sized bed, is a stand-alone room-sized octagon building across our one acre property from our house. It has its own driveway, and is completely fenced in from the road. However, it is near the road, and there will be neighborhood road noise. Complimentary ear plugs are available for your use in the room beside the bed. The zen room has an adjacent private rock-walled outdoor bathroom complete with toilet, hot shower and sink. There is a small refrigerator and coffee maker. I have snorkels and masks for you to use. Earplugs to block out ambient noise of neighborhood traffic are included by the bed. I supply towels, shower accessories, and coffee or tea in the room. I have an extra cot, if needed for an additional guest or child. Wireless internet is available. We are located 25 miles from Volcano National Park, 5 miles from the town of Pahoa,12 miles from the lava viewing area in Kalapana, and about 10 miles from Hilo town. There is lots to do in Puna, including great snorkeling at the Kapoho tidepools, a very relaxing swim at the Ahalanui Hot Pond, and the famous Wednesday Night Market in Kaimu at Uncle Robert's. It is best to have a rental car, as island public transportation is not convenient, and there are so many places to see! Beyond Puna, it's a short drive to waterfalls by and above Hilo. Mauna Kea summit can be accessed from Saddle Road. A 4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended to see the summit, but you can get to the Visitor's Center in a regular car, and enjoy a beautiful sunset and access to telescopes and a ranger talk about the stars. It's a heavenly sight! Getting AroundOn this island you will need to rent a car. There is a bus system, but it is not convenient, and taxis are expensive. Other Things to NoteWe are located half way between the villages of Kea'au and Pahoa - each are five miles away in opposite directions. Grocery shopping is available in both villages, but the best restaurants are in Pahoa. Our favorite is called Kaleo's, and it's at the end of the Pahoa Village main street. The district of Puna is a full of natural beauty, including wonderful pools for snorkeling, a large volcanically heated natural pond and one of the most scenic drives in the world, highway 137. We are located about 45 minutes from Volcanos National Park, where you can hike trails, have a great meal at the hotel inside the park, and view the spectacular red plume from the lava lake inside Halemau'mau Crater.

Hale Huna Kai is in the Puna district of the Big Island of Hawaii. Puna is located south of Hilo on the East Coast of the Island. The area is known for many things but one that stands out is Kalapana and Kaimu Bay where in late 1990, the on-going eruption of Kilauea's Kupaianaha vent covered the famous Black Sand Beach at Kaimu Bay. The house is a 30-minute drive from Hilo Airport. It is situated at the edge of Kaloli Bay less than one-half mile from Kaloli Point. The surroundings are lush, verdant, and tropical. Palms, orchids, and plumeria plants abide. Flowering bougainvillea, poinsettia and hibiscus color the area. On most mornings you can look out the front door, over the driveway and see Mauna Kea ('White Mountain'), a dormant volcano. Step out in the yard and pick fresh bananas for breakfast, and seasonally white pineapples are abundant. The house just went through major renovations after being damaged by Hurricane Iselle in August of 2014. The new lanai upstairs is incredible! Whales are abundant in the late fall through April and can be seen and heard from the bedrooms. They come close enough to the house you can see their eyes! Among these, of course, are the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the two volcano mountains, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, all of which offer unique and unforgettable experiences. Adventures in hiking and biking abound. The drive to Volcanoes Nat'l Park is quite lovely with orchid nurseries along the way. The small village of Volcano is also worth exploring for it's art galleries. Closer by, five minutes away, is the rugged volcanic coastline which offers both beautiful seaside walks as well as seasonal whale-watching. Also, the Puna District offers a beautiful and scenic tour of this area's pristine coastline. Among the features of this tour are: the Petrified Forest State Park, the tide pools at Kapoho with it's ideal snorkeling, and the warm pools at Alahanui Park. Further along is the Isaac Hale County Park for surfing, snorkeling and diving. At the end of this drive is Kalapana which displays one of the area's most recent volcano flows. The nearby, charming village of Pahoa offers a quaint glimpse of life into the past. Further north is the town of Hilo with it's own old-world charm, it's bay and it's good variety of dining establishments. Going up the beautiful and scenic Hamakua coast, are the Akaka Falls State Park and the Hawaiian Tropical Botanical Gardens, both of which offer a beautiful and unique experience of the Big Island. Our home sleeps 6 comfortably with a queen bed in the master, queen bed in the 2nd bedroom and 2 twin beds in the 3rd bedroom. The central bathroom has Jacuzzi tub/shower. The home also has clothes washer and dryer. In Hilo you will find beautiful Liliuokalani Park, Coconut Island, black sand beaches, snorkeling, museums, art galleries, the Palace Theatre, and lots of restaurants. Farmers markets are very popular here and can be found in Hilo, Kea’au and Pahoa. In Hilo, the big Farmer’s Market day is on Wednesdays & Saturdays. On Sundays the unique Maku'u Farmer's Market, a few miles from us, has lots of fresh local grown produce, flowers, food vendors, exotic clothes, unique local crafted jewelry and musicians providing music while you sit at long tables having breakfast or lunch. The quaint tiny village of Pahoa has just started an evening farmer's market and it also has lots of great little restaurants, Thai, Mexican, Italian, and even gourmet. Beyond Pahoa are the massive trees of Lava State Park, great snorkeling at Waiopae tidepools in Kapoho, and the unique Red Road drive. The Volcano National Park along with the Thurston lava tubes is a must see and Pohoiki Bay. North of Hilo is the Hamakua coast, with waterfalls, scenic drives, and a beautiful botanical garden. Getting AroundThis is rural Hawaii. An automobile is a must to get around the area. There is a playground at the HPP Hui and a public pool in Pahoa.
