Ever since John Profumo first laid eyes on Christine Keeler as she basked in Cliveden’s pool, it’s been clear that this Berkshire boutique hotel was destined to be a Mr & Mrs Smith retreat of choice. As well as being a celebrated haunt for politicos and literati, this majestic neoclassical manor, with its air of faded grandeur, is the proud birthplace of the £100 club sandwich – worth every penny, we’re relieved to add.

The SpaceThis is a lovely large room with a new en-suite. There is a desk, and you have a smart TV, kettle, toaster, microwave and fridge. I leave breakfast basics in your fridge and you can have breakfast when you want it. There's also a microwave if you want to cook a simple supper. There are loads of great restaurants and pubs near us. Guest AccessGuests have use of their own room. Interaction with GuestsWe are friendly but don't usually interact much with our guests (unless you want us to). I can book taxis, restaurants, tours etc. The NeighborhoodWe are semi-rural but we do have wifi! The local village still has a weekly market and butchers, bakers etc Many buildings are medieval. If you want a walk then there are some woods at the end of our lane. There's plenty to do locally, a golf course next door, wake boarding, windsurfing, water ski-ing, cycling, swimming, go-karting, Go-Ape and of course Windsor Castle, Eton, Legoland, Harry Potter World and some great restaurants such as The Fat Duck, Waterside and Hinds Head, Royal Oak and Luke's Diner. We are next door to Cliveden National Trust which is beautiful any time of the year. Getting AroundThere is no public transport. You need a car or expect to take taxis. We can help out with lifts to and from the local station (Taplow). We have loads of off road parking. Taxi to the airport is £30. Other Things to NoteYou really do need a car but the local taxi firm are very reliable and friendly. Our nearest station is Taplow and from there you can easily get to Windsor, Oxford and London.

Do visit Cookham and on foot if you wish as 3 km distant but a stiff climb on the way back. A longer walk from St Nicholas is down and up the hill to the right to the Chequers Pub. Adjoining us is Cliveden the very famous National Trust property. There is a charge to enter but here you can walk 2 hours with remarkable colourful gardens, a maze and playground and down to the River Thames. The house can be visited on certain days. SHOPPING Beaconsfield nearest 4 km and most extensive with large supermarket stores-Sainsbury, Waitrose and Marks and Spencer and many other shops. More local is Bourne End 2 km with a Tesco Express, Marks and Spencer food and petrol ( 2 petrol stations) , a chemist, and several other shops, RAILWAY AND MOTORWAY SERVICES London is only 30 minutes away with train services from both Beaconsfield (London-Marylebone) and Burnham ( London-Paddington). The Oak Barn is situated equidistant from the M4 ( London, Bath, Bristol) and the M40 ( London, Oxford, The Cotswolds) RESTAURANTS AND PUBS We are surrounded by a remarkable collection of restaurants . Beaconsfield - extremely well endowed with restaurants both in the Old Town, Brasserie Blanc, Crazy Bear, Spice Merchant (Indian) and the New Town. Bourne End - Darlings small friendly and good. Bray - The Fat Duck*****, The Waterside ****** very expensive but lunch slightly more reasonable, and more modest ,the Crown Pub that we enjoy in particular. Cookham - a good selection of English pubs and restaurants including Indian, Maliks, andRiver Chinese, the Chef Peking. The Ferry is on the river and Stanley Spencer art gallery not far away. Marlow-large selection and well worth walking down the high street and over 19c suspension bridge to visiting the Complete Angler with two restaurants alongside Thames Weir. Windsor-do visit rather crowded Windsor and the Castle if you wish. Close by is Eton College and Brasserie Gilbeys. Best to go to Eton and park (if all goes well) and walk in. Wooburn Common - the Blackwood Arms , charming pub and adjoins Burnham Beeches with numerous walks. Close to Dorneywood where the Government of the day's Chancellor resides.

The SpaceOur house is great for entertaining with large open kitchen and plenty of places to relax/chat. The living area (ground floor) flows really nicely. We do most of our living in the kitchen but have a spacious TV/playroom, which is a C-shape open plan. We also have a very large living room connected to kitchen which is accessible through a door. The living room is split between sofas overlooking the scenic garden and another set of sofas near a cozy fireplace. The best thing about our house is that if it's raining, you can still be inside and feel as though you are still outside, as our kitchen has a large conservatory. We have converted our garage into a gym, which is just off the kitchen. We also have a utility room for laundry. Upstairs, we have 4 bedrooms, so, 8 sleep comfortably. The master bed has a super-duper king. Sleeps 2 adults (and could easily fit 2 kids in between as the bed is huge) The small guest room has a double bed. Sleeps 2. Our sons room has a single trundle bed. The trundle bed pulls out and up, level with the bed. It can be 2 singles or push together as a king size bed. Sleeps 2. Our large guest room has a double bed. Sleeps 2. There is a sofa that could flatten (click/clack, not futon) and fit 1 child, if needed. We do a lot of entertaining and have had 8 adults comfortably. Our TV room sofa actually turns into a good sofa bed. It pulls out like a drawer and up (not a wirey uncomfortable sofa bed). With back cushions off, it can sleep 2, if needed. Guest AccessCookham is on the river. River is a 10 minute walk. Winter Hill golf course is 10 minute walk. Cookham village is a very close walk: White Oak restaurant at end of our street Crown pub starts off the village with great outdoor space 2 rivaling Indian restaurants (Maliks and Cookham Tandoori) Delicious Thai restaurant Upscale Chinese restaurant 2 rivaling tea and cake shops Kings arms pub/restaurant - great cozy fire space and summer outdoor space Bel & Dragon - historic pub/upscale gastro restaurant The Ferry - restaurant on the water Wine shop - reasonable prices A few womens clothes boutiques Art gallery Hairdressers Stanley Spencer art gallery (which put Cookham on the map) Cookham train station is 5-10 minute walk. Grocery market across from train station. Other amenities are near train station: Swan Uppers 'traditional' pub, Pizza place, Costa coffee, bank, French deli - so much here. Other market towns: Marlow (10 min drive), Henley (20 minute drive), Windsor (25 minute drive), Oxford (45 minute drive) London is a 45 minute drive. Heathrow 30 minute drive. Gatwick 1 hour drive. There are a lot of National Trust sites. Interaction with GuestsWe won't have face-to-face interaction, as we are letting out the entire house. We are a phone call away. We are friends with all our neighbours so they are around to help out if necessary. The NeighborhoodCookham village is a destination point - it has so much to offer. We love the view of Cookham moor. Great for dog walking, kicking the ball around, running, anything. We can walk everywhere including the river (10 minutes away). People even sail on the river here! Getting AroundTrain station is 5-10 minute walk. Train leads to Marlow or Maidenhead (which connects to London or Reading, leading to other westward stations) The M4 is a 10-15 minute drive. The M40 is a 10-15 minute drive Other Things to NoteWe have a tasteful trampoline in the corner of the garden. It can handle 2 medium weight adults and a couple kids. The back garden is completely secure. Dogs can't escape as even the hedge leading to the fields has reinforced fencing.
