Shillings Cottage is a small but compact, romantic hideaway for two, with room for a cot for a baby, nestling in the beautiful Blackdown Hills. These unspoilt hills are rich in wildlife, with deer, heron, duck, woodpeckers, badgers, foxes, kingfishers, pheasants, buzzards and sparrow hawks. Hidden away, in an area of low pollution and far from traffic noise, the stone cottage sits in a peaceful setting within six acres of gardens and orchard. It is the only cottage to-let on the property. The cottage has several features such as beamed ceilings, hand painted tiles and oils and water colours by local artists. Upstairs, French windows open onto a wide balcony under a walnut tree, with steps down to the swimming pool, which is open from mid May until mid September. You are welcome to enjoy a swim whenever you wish. Additionally, the pool is exclusively for you as the only cottage guests, from midday until 4pm from Mondays to Fridays. It is sixteen feet by thirty feet, with Roman End steps down and has a depth of between four and five foot throughout. Downstairs the kitchen has a table and chairs, a comfortable armchair, a kettle, toaster, hob and microwave upon solid beech worktops, with a fridge, oven, cupboards and drawers beneath. Fresh flowers will be on the table, with your free cream tea of scones, jam and clotted cream for our weekly guests. Next to the kitchen is a shower room with power shower, a wash basin and a separate WC. The stairs lead up to the living room/bedroom where you will find a comfy sofa, so you can sit and read in the sunshine through the French windows or watch TV. The TV may also be seen from the super-king bed, which has a thick, comfortable mattress and a soft topper. Beyond this, the balcony is entwined with roses and clematis, with chairs and a table where you can you can survey the landscape or watch the doves fly in and out of their dovecote. Steps from here take you to the paved terrace with borders filled with scented flowers and herbs surrounding the pool. The clear water is perfect for a refreshing dip. In a sheltered corner is a suntrap with a table, reclining chairs and a parasol for shade. Or you can lean back on soft cushions on teak recliners under the old apple tree, read, or simply go to sleep. Just a short walk from Shillings Cottage, on the river Culm, lies the historic village of Hemyock with its Castle, shops, excellent pub, take away, Post Office, bowling green, boules and tennis courts. There are also many traditional country pubs in the local villages nearby, serving food, local beers, ciders and fine wines. The Blackdown Hills are the perfect destination for those who enjoy walking, cycling or horse-riding amid unspoilt countryside. The gently rolling landscape retains old fashioned methods of farming, with small meadows surrounded by banks and hedges within small dairy or beef cattle and sheep farms. You can walk straight from the door through grassy fields or along one of the many footpaths, or take a stroll along the river. Or enjoy the bird song while you have a picnic on a hill side. If you wish, you may bring your own bike or borrow one of the owners and cycle the quiet lanes, over the hills and through the valleys. For those who want to explore the area further, to the south, the Jurassic Coast is within 16 miles. Here you will find both many quiet beaches and small seaside villages between Lyme Regis and Exmouth. The coast path runs right along this coast and also along the North coast, which is within an hour's drive and has long, sandy beaches famous for surf. Exmoor, Dartmoor, Lundy Island, the Eden Project, Rosemoor and Clovelly are all within reach. There are also many historic houses nearby and lovely gardens to visit. The city of Exeter is 22 miles, Taunton is 12 miles and the small market towns of Honiton and Wellington are 9 and 6 miles respectively. The owners will be happy to give ideas, directions and recommendations. We also have a range of walks and maps available for you to choose from. Please note: The pool is occasionally used by the owners and by those staying with them. The cottage, balcony, terrace and gardens around the pool have mobile phone reception and free WIFI broadband internet coverage. There are some books and games available within the cottage and DVD’s may be borrowed from the owners. Hampers of local farm produce and ales or ciders may be ordered in advance. An online shopping service, via the nearest Waitrose, can be ordered by you and unpacked prior to your arrival. There is no smoking inside the cottage. Full central heating makes the cottage ideal all year round. We have found that babies sleep best in a familiar cot, so we ask guests to bring their own, but a high chair can be provided. Pease mention you will be bringing a baby and the child's age. There is secure off road parking. Dogs are welcome, but there is an additional charge, so please mention this when booking. Shillings Cottage is a romantic hideaway. It lies within 7 acres of carefully tended gardens and an orchard, with an adjoining field, in the centre of the unspoilt and traditionally farmed Blackdown Hills. It is the one and only cottage within the owners grounds and there is exclusive use of the outdoor pool during weekday afternoons. The local village is friendly and welcomes visitors to the area. The nearest coastline is 16 miles. This is the Jurrasic Coast, which is a fossel hunters paradise. To the north is Exmoor and beyond that the sandy beaches of Woolacome and Westward Ho! Dartmoor is within sight on a clear day and there are many lovely gardens and historic houses to visit nearby, as well as small market towns and pretty villages.

The SpaceA quiet cottage attached to Walders Court, a grade II listed property dating from the 1600's. Used as the setting for the novelist R.D. Blackmore's novel, Perlycross, he being more famous as the author of Loorna Doone. Private and tucked away with your own entrance. Ideal for those needing a stopover, easy access from M5, J26 or J27, or those seeking a base to explore. Excellent walking, and a short 45-60 minute drive to Exmoor and Dartmoor. Entrance is through a shared private courtyard, through a side gate and into the private/ non-shared garden that belongs to this Cottage. This will lead you to the front stable door of the Cottage. The front door leads directly into the kitchen/dining area. This is a spacious room, equiped with an Aga for cooking and warmth, dishwasher, and washing machine, plenty of cupboard storage and a small fridge freezer. A kitchen table, large enough to seat six completes the area. An open staircase leads from the kitchen to the upstairs bedroom. The bedroom overlooks the entrance courtyard and the entrance gate. Furnished simply, with a 5' bed, comfortable mattress & quality linens. En-suite bathroom, with bath, washbasin and toilet. Returning to the kitchen. From the kitchen, three shallow steps lead you into a small open plan cloakroom area, with storage for coats and shoes. Access to the ground floor shower room and toilet is located here. The cloakroom leads to the living area. The living area is a light and airy space, with a small woodburning stove. It is furnished with a two seater settee, and a two seater pull out bed settee. Television and wifi access available in the living area. Outside, access from the front door is the small side garden. This is for your sole use while you are at the cottage. The garden is surrounded by a shrub hedge, beyond which is a country lane. As the season progresses the garden becomes more private and secluded as the shrubs become leafy. During the winter the garden is more exposed due to the nature of this hedge. BBQ and fire pit available for your use. Points to note. The ground floor living room can be easily used as a bedroom, with the shower room close by. The lounge opens from the cloakroom area, and although there are no doors, because of the dogleg style, there is privacy if it is to be used as a sleeping area. The main bedroom is accessed from the open plan stairs that lead from the kitchen, so any noise from the kitchen will be easily heard from the bedroom. Some windows, overlook the courtyard of the main house. These will not affect the privacy of the Cottage, as you cannot see into the Cottage from the courtyard. Finally, for those very tall, (over 6ft) the shower is fairly compact due to restricted ceiling height. Guest AccessYou will have access to a small side garden for your own private use. There are outside chairs and table, and a small BBQ, wood fired and fire pit for your own use. There is off street parking for a maximum of two vehicles. There is no street lighting torches for nighttime use are left in the cottage. Interaction with GuestsWe live in the adjoining property, and there are other houses in the hamlet, so there is always someone around to ask directions or seek advice. The cottage is quite private, so unless you seek us out you will not really be aware your neighbours. The NeighborhoodWe live at the foot of the Blackdown Hills in Devon. We sit underneath The Beacon, a short 10-15 minute hike up the hill to a fabulous 400 year old ancient monument used to call all good men and true, to arms, to ward off the Spanish invasion. The Blackdowns are one of the Westcountry's hidden gems, forming a tranquil, beautiful, and relatively isolated landscape on the Devon and Somerset border. Steep ridges, high plateau, valleys and springs create a charming mosaic of countryside dotted with farms, villages and ancient features. We are a 15-20 minute walk from our local village, where you can find The Culm Valley Inn, renowned for it's locally sourced food, real ales and lively atmosphere, a true village pub. Crossing the ancient packhorse bridge will bring you along to the Strand Stores, great for a good cup of tea and slice of cake, all home made, with lots of goodies to take away. We are equal distance between the North and South Devon Coastline. An hours journey can take you to the delights of these shores, into the moors of Dartmoor and Exmoor. Slightly further afield is the Eden project, but very accessible as a day trip. If you are a National Trust member, we have several properties on our doorstep for you to explore. Full details of what you can find are in our 'Welcome Pack & Information' on arrival Getting AroundThere is limited public transport. Our closest bus route is from the village of Culmstock, and the timetable varies throughout the year. The nearest railway station is Tiverton Parkway, on the main Paddington to Penzance line, with frequent trains to most destinations. A taxi fare from us to Tiverton is around £10. There is metered car parking at the railway station. There is (20 mins by car) a steam train from Bishops Lydeard to the North Devon Coast, a worthwhile experience. Other Things to NoteA small amount of tea, instant coffee, sugar and milk will be stocked in the kitchen. Basic cleaning materials and dishwasher tablets are supplied alongside the normal basics as listed on AirB&B. We have a local village shop and pub a 15-20 minute walk from us. The village of Hemyock is 1/2 mile down the hill where there is a shop, post office, doctors' surgery and 2 churches. The pub - The Catherine Wheel, serves good pub grub and is quirky if you make allowances for the landlord who takes it upon himself to be gruff with the clientele (not sure if this is a Basil Faulty act or genuine!). One guest managed to win him round and developed good banter. Other good pubs are located within 1/2 hour's drive. There are plenty of walks over the hills and cycling is very popular here. A number of National Trust properties are easily accessible from here including Knightshayes and Killerton House. Skydiving takes place at Dunkeswell airfield just 4 miles away and off road driving experiences available in Honiton. The coast is an easy drive from here. the south coast with lovely beaches at Lyme Regis, Bere, Exmouth and Sidmouth from 1/2 hour away and the north coast for great surfing just under an hour - Saunton Sands (7 miles of sandy beach) and Croyde. Local taxis are available depending on the journey (Jolly Jaunts (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)). Other Things to NoteYou will be given access to our WIFI on arrival. We often have guests staying who fly into Dunkeswell airfield. We are happy to provide free lifts (family plans permitting).
