The SpaceHillsboro is a great launch/crash pad for exploring the Black Range. Hike, mountain bike, explore ghost towns, go birding along Percha Creek and into the Aldo Leopold Wilderness. Hike to Hillsboro Peak. Hillsboro is a cool little town, quiet, a great get away especially for creative folks. The house has really cool historical ties to movers and shakers in territorial New Mexico, the Victorio War and Geronimo campaign, the supreme court, Sheriff Pat Garrett, President Harding's Tea Pot Dome Scandal. For those reasons, and its most unusual architecture it's a New Mexico Cultural Property and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The home is made of lava-like iron silicate blocks, featured in New Mexico Magazine and the book, Houses in Time. Check out www rotation films com/documentary/88042 and http:// hillsborohistory. (URL HIDDEN) www pinterest com/golddusthome Guest AccessThe main cottage has a plush full-sized bed. The casita out back, an equally comfortable queen-sized bed. Interaction with GuestsMinimal, not present during stay. The NeighborhoodExpect quiet solitude. The house is on the mesa above town; your neighbors are the library, tennis and basketball court, a donkey at the Black Range Vineyard, Union Church, and the old county courthouse. Out the back door, cattle graze and mule deer browse. Javelina frequent town, too. Getting AroundA car is a necessity.

The NeighborhoodHillsboro, New Mexico is an historic adobe village, dating from the 1880s, when it was at the county seat and center of the Black Range Mining district. It's now a small but active community of artists, writers, ranchers and other colorful characters. It's located where two branches of the pretty Percha Creek converge, and the tall trees that line Main Street, which is also NM 152, tap into the moisture flowing in the shallow aquifer. There is a great cafe, The General Store, a classic old Post Office, the Black Range Museum, Hillsboro Historical Society, a couple antique shops, and a Library/Community Center, which hosts monthly concerts and other community events. The cafe and library both offer free wi-fi. On Saturday mornings downtown, there is often local music and fresh local produce in season. Getting AroundGuests will need a vehicle or bicycle, as there is no public transportation to Hillsboro. This route is frequented by bicyclists traveling the east-to-west route across the USA, known as the Southern Tier. (See (URL HIDDEN) for more information and bike maps.)

The SpaceOur casita is small but mighty. It has a wooden porch, a double bed, chair and place to stash luggage. There is a non- private bathroom with a small separate shower, sink and potty. There is a curtain that closes into the bathroom but no door. Our grounds are lovely and we encourage our guests to wander about. Smoking outside only please. Guest AccessThe casita is just off the patio of our main home. There are several outdoor sitting spaces and you are welcomed to explore. We currently have one burro, three chickens and two dogs so we ask you to be mindful of the gates and the flock. Your casita is private and has a key. Plenty of parking and room to lock bicycles, etc. inside the gate. Interaction with GuestsAs much or as little as you like - we have a tasting room within walking distance and are usually there Thursday through Sunday. You are welcome to drop in and taste our local wine and beer and commune with friends, neighbors and travelers who stop by. The NeighborhoodGreat historic neighborhood to poke around in. Giant cottonwoods line the street and the creek. There is a walking map with details of the charming homes and mining history abounds. The Black Range Museum is a fantastic time capsule into local history. Getting AroundYou can walk all over town and check into the nooks and crannies. The altitude is a lovely 5180 feet above sea level and that and the view can really take your breath away. Bicycling is very popular but some of our hills can be challenging. Other Things to NoteOur favorite cafe opens on Main Street at 8 am with coffee and a great breakfast and lunch. PLEASE NOTE THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE TO GET FOOD IN TOWN and they close at 3pm. They are also closed on Thursdays. You might want to bring a snack if you will miss them. Tennis court and library are next door, old courthouse and jail ruins a short walk. Concerts happen at the community center once a month or so as does the library bake sale. Pickers circle is usually on Main Street every Saturday morning and Cindy sells local vegetables, honey and flowers then. THERE IS NO CELL PHONE SERVICE IN TOWN. Did we mention that this is a great place to unwind and unplug?

If you want a quiet retreat, then historic Hillsboro is the place to go. This home is available for long-term rental. This two-bedroom 1894 Victorian cottage is on the National Register of Historic Places, and is among the most unique homes in New Mexico. It's featured in the book, ''Houses in Time,'' and appeared in New Mexico Magazine. Gold built Hillsboro, and this house is built out of molten gold slag, poured into blocks that reflect iridescent purple and pink. Its wood came from the razed photography studio of J.C. Burge in nearby Kingston in 1893. The Historic Hillsboro House was made of recycled materials--120 years ago. The property was formerly owned by Judge Frank W. Parker, a President McKinley nominee to the Territorial Supreme Court, and eventual Chief Justice after statehood. The home was built by Peter and Nicholas Galles, that latter leaving a significant paper trail. Nicholas wended through the Indian Wars as a citizen soldier, serving as a captain in the Geronimo campaign. From the veranda you'll enjoy the mountain views and the air embalmed by birdsong. You can chat, read, and if you must, work on your laptop. You'll quickly see why Hillsboro today has a high concentration of writers and artists and photographers. You should visit the Black Range Museum, antique shops, and Black Range Vineyard and Bistro. You might take a meal or two at the Barber Shop Cafe or the Hillsboro General Store Cafe. Work off your meals with a walk through the Hillsboro Historic District and take in the unique architecture about town, including a home owned by New Mexico's former Lt. Governor, Diane Denish. Hillsboro is a great place to take a long pause on the Geronimo Trail National Scenic Byway. It's a launch pad - crash pad for activities in the Gila National Forest, the Gila Cliff Dwellings, the Aldo Leopold Wilderness, Lake Valley historic ghost town, or Caballo and Elephant Butte state parks, and a down-to-earth landing for Spaceport America visitors. Make forays into the arts scene, hot spring baths, and antique shops and museums in Truth or Consequences, 30 miles away. This home is fully equipped for stays of any length. The main bedroom has a queen-size pillow-top bed, a double sleeper sofa in the living room, and another queen in detached casita with a modern full bathroom and laundry. We're located between the old courthouse ruins, and the historic Union Church. Cool stuff to do. Lake Valley, HHS, General Store cafe, barbershop cafe, BR Vineyard, BR road video, True West, 88042 vid, BR Rag, - documentary about emery hale who lives in the nearby town of hillsboro another great day trip beautiful drive over the pass (house builder was there)

This listing is for the spacious 1912 Rancher's House with its 1950s High-Style Western interior, sunny patio, and fine amenities. The house accommodates 8-11 with 3 bedrooms, 2 sleeping porches, 2 baths, new gourmet kitchen, large porches, fountain patio, fireplace, and more. Renovated in 1950 by the owners' grandparents under direction of renowned ranch interior designer W. R. Dallas of San Antonio, the Rancher's House is much the same today, save for minor refurbishing and recent upgrades to the baths and gourmet kitchen. For guests, the house may be either a roomy, rambling accommodation for one family or a small group of friends, or the adjacent patio apartments may be added to provide comfortable accommodations for up to 10 more. (See these additional listings on this website: Hawk's Nest, Fountain Patio, and Rancher's House/Patio Combination.) Guests find that the Rancher's House, with its sprawling spaces and oversized living areas, is exactly right for enjoying the opportunity to gather. The long front porch easily accommodates a group at one end playing cards at the small table, others in the middle space visiting, and a jigsaw puzzle or board game in progress at the large table beyond – and more. In the spacious living room, there are several conversation areas, or some guests might enjoy the big screen TV for broadcast cable programming or movies from our library. Off the kitchen, the side porch is perfect for breakfast at the banquette or for managing drinks service for the party. The dining room serves up to 12. With other tables and a bar up to 16 more may share a meal. Outdoors, the fountain patio is a patch of fresh-air privacy for the Rancher's House, but the house is only steps away from the beautiful pool, a replica of its original 1929 predecessor, and well-groomed lawns and plantings within the courtyard's walled perimeter. Shady seating and a 6-person spa promise even more relaxation. Beyond the courtyard, expansive lawns beckon guests to run and play or soak up sun. There's room for badminton, croquet, or bocce – or just enjoying the air and light, so special in New Mexico. Guests are welcome to explore ranch headquarters, with its barns and corrals, and then to hike, bicycle, or drive out in any direction on NAN Ranch roads. There is plenty to see and enjoy. • Rental guests may also park one RV or camping trailer nearby, though we do not offer hookups. • For very large groups, combinations of rentals, and events, a consultation with the ranch owners is recommended.
