The SpaceFully furnished and hardwood floors throughout, the space is clean and well maintained. It is primarily used for our personal guests, but on a limited basis we also rent it out. The pictures say it all. It sits above our garage, but we're not likely to use it during your stay, so worry not about noise. Our home is adjacent to the guest house, so we'll be living our lives and minding our own business during your stay - but we're always readily available for questions, issues, or recommendations. You might see our friendly dogs or hear our rooster crow. We are 10 minutes from Duke and downtown Durham, 25 minutes to Chapel Hill - this is country living with easy access to town, giving you a peaceful and relaxing home away from home. Guest AccessYou'll have access to the car port for parking during your stay, and upon request, access to the washer/dryer room in the back of the garage. You can also feel free to meander the 5 acre property or hang out on the front porch of our main home. If peaches or apples are in season, grab some from the trees! Interaction with GuestsWe'll be available via phone, text, or email. Our physical availability depends on our own daily schedules, but we're generally around and available to assist or make recommendations. The NeighborhoodWe are not in a neighborhood. We're just outside city limits on a 5 acre mini farm. Enjoy the quiet and peace during your stay, but be sure to make the short journey into town to enjoy all that renovated Durham has to offer! Getting AroundYou will need your own transport as there is no access to public transportation in our area. Other Things to NoteIn addition to the nightly fee, we request a $15 cleaning fee to prepare the home for our next guests.

The SpaceDesigned originally as a women's retreat center, GardenSpirit has been described as a "powder puff" of comfort and relaxation. Soothing colors, thoughtful amenities and calming privacy hold out the promise of a wonderful stay, nurturing your spirit as well as your body. GardenSpirit is a warm and welcoming place for quiet conversation, reconnection and tranquility. It is especially wonderful to walk the forest paths in the morning or sit in the kitchen to watch the squirrels scamper and the birds enjoy their breakfast. There is a young fox who often hides out near the Creative Cottage and you will probably see our (too) friendly deer and fawns grazing nearby. (Less wonderful are our raccoon visitors ... we discourage them as much as possible but they are pretty darned smart and manage to eat more birdseed than the birds. Grrrrr...) Most importantly, we pride ourselves on providing a spotless home away from home. The house is always professionally cleaned after each guest stay. We wash and disinfect ALL bedding - comforters and mattress pads included, which many hotels rotate only occasionally. Doorknobs and jambs are disinfected as well as that much-used TV remote! We scour GardenSpirit top to bottom to make sure it meets our exceedingly picky standards, then share it with you. If we'd stay here (and we would and do) then it's immaculate. - We provide all linens (sheets, bath and dish towels, beach towels for the hot tub). - The kitchen is well stocked - from tea bags to basil, slow cooker to Keurig. - Plenty of dinnerware and flatware and serving dishes. - All TV cable channels plus HBO, Netflix and Showtime on 55" flatscreen. - High speed internet w/wifi password protected (desks in each bedroom). - New Weber gas grill with a bottle of propane. - ‘Midnight massage room' - think “starry, starry night.” - More than a mile of groomed, gravel paths on which to walk, meditate, enjoy the day. - Wildlife galore - bluebirds, deer, chipmunks and silly squirrels. - Your own unique passcode for alarm system and door locks. - Three living areas: sunroom, living room, family room. - Dining room seats 8; kitchen table seats 5 plus three at bar. - Always freshly baked cookies, Southern sweet tea and a basket of goodies for your arrival! Guest AccessOur registered guests are welcome to use the Guesthouse plus the marvelous meditation paths, the Purple Treehouse and hot tub and decks. The 10-acre private estate is shared by the owners (our house is separated from GardenSpirit by more than 3 acres of land yet we are close enough for instant help). Our visitors are invited walk the 7-circuit ,tri-color outdoor labyrinth and visit the organic gardens. The hot tub LOVES to be used, but please honor our outdoor quiet hour policy - quiet from 11 pm to 7 am. The lofty Purple Treehouse is big enough for two adults and has a side deck attached for a tranquil view of the property, conversation or a relaxing nap. You might prefer to wander over to the hammock and spend some time gazing at the towering tree tops. The Creative Cottage is an art building, stocked with scrapbooking supplies, paints, markers, paper and other goodies. It is not included in the basic rental price but access can be added for a small fee. The Purple Golf Cart was purchased for guests who have mobility problems so they could reach the labyrinth. If you need this kind of assistance, please let us know and we'll come get you! Interaction with GuestsSomeone is always available to help 24/7. Linda and Victor, the owners, sometimes travel, so super assistants Kathy and Janine are also on call for anything you need. We will meet you at GardenSpirit to check you in and give you a quick tour of the property and amenities for your stay. The person who made the Airbnb reservation must be present at check in (we'll wait for you!). We weren't born in Durham but we got here as fast as we could, so we know the area intimately (30+ years here). Depend on us for area "best of" recommendations or check out the constantly-updated guidebook for our favorite restaurant and event suggestions. We will visit the house at least once a day, in part to make sure you are happy and in part to feed the many bluebirds and cardinals that crowd our back porch feeders. Even the hummingbirds dive-bomb each other from May-October! We try to be unobtrusive but you might hear the garage door go up in the mornings. No worries, we won't barge in! Checking out? Call before you leave - we want to stop by to wish you a fond farewell and troubleshoot any problems that might have cropped up (actually we like to troubleshoot those during your stay so you have a perfect experience). We are a friendly bunch, so it pains us to have to have to spell out a detailed warning about noise, but we have had a few isolated problems so here goes: GardenSpirit is private, but it is not isolated. We are located inside an established, quiet subdivision with neighbors within earshot. So we ask that you honor their need for peace and quiet. Our goal is to co-create a wonderful place to stay for a few days or even longer. The NeighborhoodHeather Glen is a quiet (especially quiet at night), slow-moving neighborhood. The speed limit around the hairpin turn where GardenSpirit lives is literally 20 mph. You'll see more dogs and owners walking the neighborhood than cars! GardenSpirit is the only house on the block and is located directly across from undeveloped wooded property. There is amazing privacy. However, the house is not completely isolated; there are neighbors behind the property and in the next block. This is a solidly middle to upper-middle class neighborhood and residents take great pride in their homes and well-manicured yards. There is an active neighborhood watch and homeowners association. Rest easy at night and during the day. For your added peace of mind, the exterior of the retreat house is protected with 24/7 video surveillance and the interior of the house has a monitored alarm system. Getting AroundHeather Glen is a suburb, so you'll need a car to get around, buy groceries, go downtown or get to a movie (try Silver Spot Cinema in Chapel Hill - amazing!). Or call Uber or Lyft, which has an active presence in the Triangle. Just FYI - it you are flying in to RDU, Uber is half the price of a cab ride ($25 vs $52). If you're driving, we'll be happy to provide excellent, clear directions to reach Gardenspirit. Duke campus is 12-15 minutes away depending on where you want to go; UNC and Chapel Hill are 25 minutes away with light traffic (not on game days though). Nearest/best grocery store is a 10-minute drive; ditto for restaurants. Nearest shopping center is 15 minutes -- best shopping center is 25 minutes south (near the airport). Don't miss funky, fun shopping on 9th Street near Duke East campus, now updated to include Panera Bread and a bunch of other neat-o stores (huge, brand new Harris Teeter grocery store). Parking is free and abundant these days (a change from the tight quarters just a few years ago). Speaking of traffic, north Durham is lightly traveled except at rush hour (s). Cole Mill Road is the quickest way to get to points south because it has the fewest stop lights. Check the Guidebook for more suggestions about what to do in Durham and the Triangle - always something interesting going on. Other Things to NoteThe house has four bedrooms, one with extra long twin beds, three with king beds for a maximum of six spaces. Though the house is fairly large (2800 sf), with only three bathrooms, it works best with six or fewer guests. If you have more than six in your entourage, we can accommodate eight by shifting beds (there is a small additional fee for additional guests). Just let us know a week in advance so we can make it "just right" when you arrive. We've changed our policy about children - YES bring them. We found that they love walking the trails and playing in the tree house. We have board games and appropriate kid-friendly TV channels. You might consider renting the Creative Cottage during your stay ($50 one time charge) and let them go crazy with artwork and creativity. No worries about spills and spatters out there!

The SpaceOur home was built in 1898 and renovated and added onto in 1989 by an old-time Hillsborough expert builder from plans dating back to the original structure. There are wood floors throughout and many special details such as pushbutton lights and period light fixtures. Guest AccessYou will have access to your room and private bath, but no kitchen privileges unless by special arrangement. The rest of the house is available for your use but it is our living space so no guarantees! Interaction with GuestsI am available as the concierge and glad to help with any of the guests needs. The NeighborhoodThe Historic District in Hillsborough, NC is a renowned center of writers and artists. There are hiking trails, historic tours, restaurants and events all year long! Because of the proximity to Duke and UNC our neighborhood is extremely desirable! Getting AroundThe Orange Bus travels from Chapel Hill to Hillsborough daily, and Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill are all nearby. There are walking and biking trails locally that connect all areas of the town. Other Things to NoteWe are flexible and able to work with a variety of needs, but mature and respectful behavior is expected at all times during your stay.

The SpaceThis beautiful bungalow is located on a 1/2 acre lot. Located in the historic district of Hillsborough but bordered on one side by Piedmont forest, the space maintains a quiet southern charm. The house's exterior is 95% unchanged and original windows can still be found in most parts of the home. This cozy spot includes a spacious 200sq ft bedroom with good closet/storage space, a warm kitchenette and dining area that looks out and down on the surrounding greenery, a full bathroom including a tub, and covered patio for year-round enjoyment and yard access for relaxing outside. The yard slopes down to a lush area where the creek is nestled--great for meditation. This apartment has a separate entrance, so you have a lot of privacy. Through my work, I run an apprenticeship program with a couple of trustworthy apprentices who are enrolled for 1 to 2 years. On days that they are working the bathroom will be shared during business hours. I am known in the area as a 'man of the woods'--a wildcrafter and herbalist who teaches exploration of the local area through workshops and college courses. It has been my work for over 40 years now, and it never gets old. I have a busy schedule, but I enjoy getting to know people and putting them on the trail of good things both in town and in nature. Guest AccessGuests have access to a private parking space and entrance, a 200 sq/ft bedroom with 11 ft ceilings and excellent ventilation. Additionally guests will have access to a closet, as well as an 85 sq/ft side room with cooking and laundry facilities, and a full bathroom attached to the kitchen. Interaction with GuestsI am occasionally out of town. While I enjoy meeting new people and sharing great conversation, my schedule is very busy, so I'm happy to get to know you but for the most part you will be on your own adventure! The NeighborhoodWalk south on N Occoneechee St for 2 blocks to find Gold Park...a beautiful space with picnic shelters, sports fields, playgrounds, and direct access to the Hillsborough Riverwalk. Walk East along King St to find downtown Hillsborough. The Saratoga Grill provides excellent fine new American dining and the Wooden Nickel is a favorite gastro pub featuring local and regional cuisine. Churton St provides local shopping and art galleries, and Cup-a-Joe has the best latte in town. Additional ammenties downtown include historical markers, a variety of fine dining options, musuems, a local green grocer, and a small bookshop. Getting AroundFree public parking is available throughout downtown Hillsborough, and there is a bus service downtown that connects Hillsborough to the rest of the triangle region.

"Like walking into a hug!" GardenSpirit Guesthouse is a peaceful garden retreat with complete privacy, but with easy access to Duke, downtown Durham, interstates and shopping. Nestled into part of a 10-acre estate of towering pines and crystal blue skies, GardenSpirit is a light-filled, 2850 sf spacious cottage w/ 3 kings, 2 XL twins, sunroom, massage chair, meditation paths, gardens & hot tub. The house was originally designed as a women's garden retreat center so the furnishings are soft, pastel and charming - perfect for a girls' weekend, family reconnection, writing retreat and/or soul renewal. Great place to stay if you're in town for a wedding or graduation (and we would even consider hosting a very small wedding and reception with advanced approval). Even business travelers will feel at home here, with fast internet access and desks in each bedroom. The house is private but it is located within an established residential neighborhood. Folks are friendly (you'll see more people walking their dogs than cars) and the neighborhood is safe. To reassure you further, the house is protected by a monitored alarm system and external video surveillance (it helps us keep track of who's on site when no one has booked the house). There are four bedrooms, one on the main level and three upstairs. "Carolina on My Mind" (aka 'the yellow bedroom') is on the first floor and has a king sized bed, comfy quilts and antique dresser, updated for you. In the closet find women's slippers in many sizes for you to borrow during your stay plus extra pillows and blankets. Each room has an accurate atomic clock hidden discreetly behind the flower arrangements. Iron headboards make a statement in this room. The first floor bath, next door to the bedroom, has an oversized vanity with one sink, lots of storage and a generous shower with a shelf for your shampoo. "Once in a Blue Room" is the master suite at the top of the stairs. Double the size of the other bedrooms, this oasis has a private bath with two sinks and vanities (in true 1980s style one of the vanities is just outside the bathroom (what were they thinking?). The colors are soft (periwinkle blue) and the comforter and blankets even softer. The room is accented by bright yellow awning stripes on the privacy curtain and shades. There is a computer desk disguised as a table here plus bookshelves and a hand-painted garden armoire. The master bath has a shower/tub combo, loads of fluffy towels and cheerful yellow rugs. The massage room also lives inside this room - we converted the master closet to a midnight experience complete with stars. Recline in the chair and let yourself relax ....ahhhhh. "Tickled Pink" is the smallest bedroom, which faces the private back yard/forest. A wicker desk offers a place to jot down your thoughts. And the pouffy shabby chic curtains are the perfect foil for the flowers and thoughtful beside tables. This room has a king bed. "In the Limelight" is a bright bedroom that overlooks the front gardens and has two XL twin beds dressed with Laura Ashley comforters. There is a ceiling fan and a screen to provide privacy to occupants of both beds. Sit a spell at the wicker desk and gather your thoughts. "Tickled Pink" and "In the Limelight" are served by the hall bathroom, a mere 10 steps away. The bath has double sinks, a tub/shower combo and plenty of storage. Though the house and grounds are generous, GardenSpirit is not the place for a big party. Only registered guests are welcome to use the facilities (hot tub, massage chair, etc.). And the house is a non-smoking place to hang out - it's a medical necessity for the owners. We honor quiet hours from 10:00 pm to 8:00 am so that you sleep well and undisturbed. You might hear the hoot of an owl or the rustle of a squirrel (those darned rascals steal the birdseed!). And during the day, you'll be entertained by the antics of tiny hummingbirds, flashy cardinals and gorgeous bluebirds (we feed them all). Best of all is the frequent appearance of a momma deer and her fawn, frolicking in the woods. You might like to visit the Purple Treehouse with room for two adults (lounge chairs and ottomans included) or some very happy children. And the hammock is just behind the treehouse, so you can take 10 and gaze into the leafy canopy of trees. If you prefer to stay inside, the 60" flatscreen is full of delights - Netflix, all cable channels and premiums like HBO and Showtime. The internet is fast and dependable and we have VOiP phone service, but we don't have many phones - don't want to interrupt your reverie. Of course, it's always nice to curl with with a good book/Kindle in the cozy living room or sun room - there are lots of regular books on the shelves including a couple by the Rogglis. If you have children, you might want to rent the Creative Cottage during your stay for a small additional fee - art supplies galore and no worries about spills. All in all, GardenSpirit is a place to settle in and feel 'at home away from home.'
