The SpaceBed and Bread~Hiouchi is a unique lodging option in northern California. We are located on the banks of the amazingly clean and spectacular Smith River, surrounded by vast stands of trees and just two miles from the entrance of Redwood National Park. bnb~Hiouchi has two rooms, both with private bath. Breakfast is included in the price and other meals can sometimes be arranged. In the summer when the current slows and the Smith warms there is swimming on the river just below the house -- to one of the big rocks in the river or to a sandy beach on the opposite bank. In the fall and winter, world-class fishing for salmon and steelhead is directly below the house in one of the renowned fishing holes of the Smith. bnb~Hiouchi has two bedrooms: This listing is for the downstairs room, which is more like a private apartment with an open living space, bedroom with queen-sized bed and daybed, two IKEA sofa/chairs that convert to twin beds (for kids and teens), a private bath with oversize walk-in shower and private deck overlooking the river. The path to the river is just off this lower deck as is the hot tub. A fridge, coffee maker, electric kettle, microwave and sink means you can prepare simple meals, keep sodas cold, or wake up to a hot cup of coffee or tea. There's a gas grill on the deck if you want to cook up burgers or veggies. There is no range in this unit and bringing in additional appliances is not permitted. This room is priced at $160 a night for two people. Additional guests are $35 per person. Starting May 15 through October the rate changes to $175. This room holds a maximum of four. (There is also an upstairs double with private bath -- with a sunken bathtub/shower. A sliding glass door opens up to the main deck overlooking the Smith and a wood-covered bridge over Sheep Pen Creek. This bedroom is priced at $130 per night for two; starting May 15 through October the rate changes to $140.) All rooms have queen-sized beds. Breakfast is included in the price. Rooms have a three-night minimum in July and August and a two-night minimum other times -- but I can sometimes book two- and one-night stays between longer bookings. A county tax of 8 percent is added to room fees. The common space in bnb~Hiouchi is an open kitchen-living room with vaulted ceilings and fireplace. Oversize windows and an expansive deck on the second level overlooks the river and only covered bridge in the county. Our hot tub sits on a covered platform, surrounded by trees and overlooking the river. Life at bnb~Hiouchi is peaceful, with the sound of the Smith River and Sheep Pen Creek a constant soundtrack. The house sits near the boundary of the Smith River National Recreation Area and Redwood National Park. We are a ten minute drive to Stout Grove and Howland Hill Road, and just over a mile to entrances of Redwood National Park, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. Hiking, swimming, fishing, kayaking, and biking are available either directly from the house's property or very close by. When the rains come, there is excellent mushroom foraging in the area. We can help you connect with local guides for fishing or conservation floats on the river as well as with local guides who can take you on forays for mushrooms. Never heard of Hiouchi? It's a small hamlet with a population of just 301 but is considered a world-class destination for people who like to be among old-growth redwoods. Hikers, nature lovers, fishermen and women and birdwatchers come to Hiouchi to commune with the world as it was generations ago. In addition to the Smith, the rock-speckled beaches of the Pacific Ocean are a 20-minute drive to the west. The ocean beaches of Crescent City offer spectacular sunsets, opportunities to hike, whale-watching and a soundtrack of a different kind, from the permanent population of sea lions that live on the rocks off shore. At bnb~Hiouchi we serve a breakfast of homemade granola, fresh baked bread, muffins, and always something hot -- a frittata, a swiss chard/eggs/tofu scramble, slow-cooked pork and pancakes are breakfast staples. Eat in the kitchen or weather permitting on the deck. There's not much nightlife in Hiouchi -- the gas station and general store close at 8pm, and the local Hiouchi Café is open for breakfast and lunch only. Here in the redwoods most visitors are content to leave that shopping and city stuff behind. Because of our remote location, cell phone coverage can be spotty (Verizon has the strongest signal at the house and most prevalent coverage in the area). A wireless network in the house provides access to the web. Hope to see you soon.

The SpaceA gorgeous drive along the South Fork of the Smith River gets you to this luxurious river side house located in an area named 'Big Flat' as it is a big flat area high in the mountains where the inland tribes gathered to meet the coastal tribes. Rich in natural history and scenic beauty, this is the type of place one wants to check in, and 'check out'. Surrounded by the sights and sounds of the river rushing by as well as a multitude of songbirds and miles of majestic wilderness, there is opportunity for swimming, rafting, tubing, hiking, cycling, fishing, kayaking or just lying on the river view deck soaking up the sun in summer or snuggling by the fire in colder months. The house affords the ability to rough it in great comfort as it has full amenities while being off the grid, we have equipped it with solar power and propane appliances. Due to the solar power system capacity--- microwaves, toasters, hairdryers and other resistance appliances will drain the system and cannot be used. In addition to the river being on the property there are several small lakes with good fishing that can be driven to. Also there are several lakes that are good backpack trips in the higher mountains. We also have a trail head to the Kelsey trail near the house. The Kelsey trail is part of the Pacific Crest trail. Nestled in the heart of redwood country and perched atop the high banks of the nationally known wild and scenic Smith River lies the historic Woodmoor Gables Lodge. This beautifully renovated 1939 redwoods retreat has 360-degree views of the tallest trees in the world and the Smith River. Wake up to views of the river and to the sound of it rushing by. Enjoy your coffee in the sunroom or dine in the evenings facing sunsets as the river meanders to the mighty Pacific Ocean. Our family’s river front gathering place is located directly adjacent to Redwood National and State Parks, in Hiouchi, California, just 15 minutes east of Crescent City and the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Known for sunny summer days and cool evening nights, Hiouchi is considered the area’s gateway to the redwoods, and Woodmoor Gables is the premier riverfront rental property. The house sits on 1.3 acres of sprawling lawns, gardens, lily ponds and fountains and has a private deck and small orchard. The architecture is reminiscent of the 16th-century Tudor period, providing a classic ambiance with all the modern comforts to make your stay in the heart of the redwoods memorable and relaxing. Woodmoor Gables has been extensively renovated using top of the line finishes including granite counters, granite tile and maple hardwood flooring throughout as well as all new appliances, handcrafted maple cabinetry, lighting and furniture. An open floor plan and new windows in every room allow unobstructed views of the redwoods and Smith River. This two-story floor plan offers incredible options to make your stay enjoyable no matter what the season. The first floor offers an expansive kitchen-dining room layout. The kitchen is furnished with a bar-height counter and chairs so you have a wide, open view of the redwoods and river while you host friends and family. The dining area features plenty of seating (with a table for 12 and room for more) to host family gatherings. After dinner, enjoy the crackle of a Northwood’s fire in the living room, while curling up on one of several couches to enjoy an evening’s conversation. The first floor also has two of the most exciting attributes of the lodge: our redwood paneled sunroom which still has the original lead framed windows and our large mahogany paneled game room featuring a regulation pool table, fireplace and 50” flat screen TV, with plenty of games and reading materials to entertain the entire family. When you are ready for sleep, chose from our 6 tastefully decorated bedrooms: The Master Suite: located on the second floor, king bed, private view of the river and redwoods, 50” flat screen TV with surround sound system, private walk in closest and master bath with antique claw foot tub and large granite shower The Fountain Room: located on the second floor, queen bed, great river view, reading nook and private bath The Redwood Room: located on the second floor, queen bed, great river view, reading nook The Green Room: located on the second floor, queen bed, great river view, reading nook The Twin Room: located on the second floor, 2 twin beds, garden view, vaulted ceiling The Garden Room: located on the first floor, queen bed, private bath, garden view The Redwoods and the Smith River are a 5 minute walk through the beautifully landscaped grounds or a short drive to the entrance of Redwood National Park. The manicured lawns and gardens are an incredible treat in the spring, summer and fall, and offer a pond, fountain, rose garden, Japanese maples, and unique trees and shrubs found nowhere else in the County. Just up the road from the Park is the quaint little town of Hiouchi, which offers large morning breakfast (Paul Bunyan Style!) and lunch plates, and a small hamlet store for obtaining groceries and gas. Because we live locally, we can offer a great variety of suggestions to help seed your trip with places to visit and explore including hikes through the redwoods, beaches or coastal dunes, whale watching, magnificent lighthouses, horseback rides on the beaches and in the redwoods, bird watching some of the 413 plus species known to visit Del Norte County and of course fishing on the beautiful Smith River, known for its world record salmon and steelhead fishing. We love Woodmoor Gables and invite you to enjoy the redwood’s premier lodge while traveling through the Pacific Northwest or fishing our pristine rivers. Woodmoor Gables is that perfect place for large families or groups of friends to gather for an extended stay-cation. We hope you will consider it a home where your entire family can relax and play.

A gorgeous drive along the South Fork of the Smith River gets you to this luxurious river side house located in an area named 'Big Flat' as it is a big flat area high in the mountains where the inland tribes gathered to meet the coastal tribes. Rich in natural history and scenic beauty, this is the type of place one wants to check in, and 'check out'. Surrounded by the sights and sounds of the river rushing by as well as a multitude of songbirds and miles of majestic wilderness, there is opportunity for swimming, rafting, tubing, hiking, cycling, fishing, kayaking or just laying on the river view deck soaking up the sun in summer or snuggling by the fire in colder months. The house affords the ability to rough it in great comfort as it has full amenities while being off the grid, we have equipped it with solar power and propane appliances.Due to the solar power system capacity--- microwaves, toasters, hairdriers and other resistance appliances will drain the system. In addition to the river being on the property there are several small lakes with good fishing that can be driven to. Also there are several lakes that are good backpack trips in the higher mountains. We also have a trail head to the Kelsey trail near the house. The Kelsey trail is part of the Pacific Crest trail. For more information see the Six Rivers National Forest map....many things to do.....if you see a bear just make some noise and he will run away......harmless......just don`t leave tasty smelling food out that would attract them......Jim remember.....no hairdriers, microwaves, toasters or toaster ovens, waffle irons or electric skillets...we are on a solar system....for lights mainly......

Nestled in a redwood forest near Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, on the bank of the Wild and Scenic Smith River, this cozy log cabin is perfect for serious fishing, family vacations, honeymoons, retreats or just a quiet place to relax and enjoy nature. This log cabin was built in the 1930's as a fishing cabin. It has since been upgraded with skylights in every room, and a comfortable heating system, but it still has a wonderfully rustic and comfortable feel to it. The cabin is about 10 miles inland from the coast, barely a mile from Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, and right on the bank of the undamned, Wild and Scenic Smith River. We have easy river access to one of the best steelhead and salmon fishing spots on the Smith. Last year two of our guests hooked 22 steelhead in one day. In November, you can reliably see salmon spawning right below the cabin. This cabin is very private. The closest house is over 200 feet from the cabin and impossible to see through the trees. You are surrounded by a forest and a river. It is like having your own private park with all the comforts of home. Close by are miles of fern-lined trails through ancient Redwoods. If you want to touch and be touched by an ancient Redwood forest, this is the place to come. The Smith River is unbelievably beautiful. It is protected in it's natural state throughout it's length. It is crystal clear and perfect in the summer for swimming, canoeing with canoe available at no charge, tubing, rafting, cut-throat trout fishing or just sun bathing on a sandy beach in front of the cabin. You might also enjoy the wildlife. This area is still mostly the way God made it. It is common to see osprey, otters, mergansers, kingfishers, sandpipers, dippers and even an occasional bald eagle. In the spring, the wildflowers are awesome. If you like blackberries, late July through mid-August is when you want to be here. We are about a 20 minute drive from the coast and some spectacular beaches. These beaches are dog friendly with lots of drift wood, making it perfect for evening campfires and roasting hot dogs. Salmon and Steelhead fishing in the fall and winter is really what this cabin is all about. The cabin walls are decorated with pictures of trophy steelhead caught right in front of the cabin. Unfortunately, you need to get reservations in early for this time of year. The cabin is also a perfect home base for exploring this part of the world. It is a 30 minute drive to the start of the famous Oregon Coast Scenic Highway, with day trips to the Oregon Dunes, Oregon Caves, Sea Lion Caves, Ashland Summer Theater, Britt Festival, jet boat rides up the Klamath and Rogue Rivers and many other adventures. The weather here is absolutely some of the best in the country. The magazine, Scientific American recently ranked Del Norte County in the top five counties in the United States for the most perfect weather. We have mild summers 60s to 80s and mild winters 40s to 60s. We average about 90 inches of rain a year and that comes between November and May. But no one minds the rain, if you are a fisherman, it means more fish are coming up the river! There is much more about this cabin you might find delightful.
