The SpaceThis is the very largest space we rent on the property -- two rooms on the top floor, easily sleeping four people. It comes with an en-suite, two-room art deco bathroom (w/shower and separate claw-foot tub). This enormous Second Empire home is full of nooks & crannies to explore. There are six large bedrooms to choose from, each with a private full washroom. There is a large dining room, a parlour and an even larger "great room", with 12-foot pier mirrors and a baby grand piano, we use for receptions and recitals. Guest AccessThere's no TV on offer here, but we have high-speed internet. Plenty of books and periodicals, too, with interesting places to sit and read. We also have many folk instruments - guitars, banjos, mandolins, dulcimers - around the house that guests are welcome to play. Interaction with GuestsWe have two kids of our own to look after, so we won't be in anyone's hair. We will serve guests a very nice breakfast, better than you'll find anywhere else in the area. We use fresh ground Quartermaine coffee, turkey bacon, fresh fruit and organic free range eggs. The NeighborhoodHollidaysburg is a small town about five miles from Altoona, PA, a once-bustling railroad town that's been in decline since long before American steel mills started to close. Hollidaysburg has always been relatively prosperous. Many stately old homes built soon after the civil war are found on tree-lined Allegheny Street, and our home is among the nicest of them. But even the more modest areas of town are well-kept, quiet and safe. It's well worth exploring the town by foot or cycle. The pedestrian-friendly downtown, called "The Diamond", has managed to survive and still has small neighborhood shops. There are several restaurants and three coffee shops on Allegheny Street, all within brief walking distance of our B&B. This is a town where many people attend church. There are churches of virtually every Christian denomination, including two Catholic churches. The closest synagogue is in Altoona, and the closest Quaker meeting house is in State College. Getting AroundNearby Altoona still has passenger rail service. There are two Amtrak arrivals a day, one west-to-east (to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh) and one east-to-west (to Pittsburgh from Philadelphia), at about 10:00am and 5:00pm, respectively. If you arrive by train, we'll give you free transport to the B&B. Public transport does exist here, though not on Sundays. A bus going to and from Altoona stops right in front of our house, once per hour, on weekdays. It then meanders through the landscape for about 70 minutes before finally arriving at the Altoona Amtrak Station -- a trip which takes just 10 minutes by car. Altoona has taxis that serve Holldiaysburg, but you cannot flag them down. You must telephone, and wait up to an hour for a taxi to arrive. Other Things to NoteWe are multilingual. We can communicate in French, Mandarin and Hindi. The house has many folk instruments, especially mountain dulcimers, that guests are welcome to play.

The SpaceWe keep our home clean and uncluttered. Your private bedroom has a full sized bed, a secretary desk, and plenty of empty shelves, drawers, and hangers for you to make yourself at home. Black curtains ensure you can sleep in as late as you want without being disturbed by the sun! Guest AccessFeel free to lounge in our living room or office area. You're welcome to cook in the kitchen and enjoy your meals in the dining room. Laundry is available as well. We have a small backyard to enjoy in the warmer months as well. Interaction with GuestsWhen we're home we allow our guests to determine the amount of interaction they want. We've had guests stay up late chatting over tea, or we've gone out to give them the space and alone time they need. We'll do our best to be sensitive to you. Depending on when you book, we may only interact over email and phone if we're not home or in the area. The NeighborhoodA generally quiet neighborhood on a main road. If you are used to city noises this room will be no problem for you. The main road is not very loud at night, in our opinion. If you would prefer a quieter room, just check out our other listings. We have other rooms available that are NOT on the street side of the house.

The SpaceThe front portion of this fine Victorian structure offers well-appointed elegance and refinements. But you're poor, so you won't experience any of that. You'll be in the back, with us, sharing the cramped, stifling, soulless drudgery of the working classes. It's clean, but there's exposed lathing in the ceiling, and the room hasn't been painted in decades. It's quiet and the bed is comfortable, but if you sleep past 9am, the spin & buzzing of the dryer on the other side of the thin wall will wake you. The bathroom was designed by Greyhound Bus Lines. No shower. There's no TV (the wi-fi is ok, though). Guest AccessYour low status prohibits you from using the front door. You'll enter through the service entrance, climb the steep rear stairs, and cross the sweltering laundry room to access the tiny sleeping space. You will bow deeply and meekly should you encounter any full-paying guests or senior staff. Interaction with GuestsWhen we're not busy, we may offer you the occasional condescending smile. The NeighborhoodIt's a graceful neighborhood in the heart of Hollidaysburg's historic district. Neighbors will harrumph as they avoid you, noses upturned. The bourgeois exclusion of it all will serve to underscore the alienation & injustice you've suffered your entire life. Getting AroundYou can park your rusting 20-year-old Honda in the rear. Otherwise, the public bus (which does not run on Sunday) is cheap enough for you. It follows an absurdly circuitous route through Hollidaysburg and Altoona, so it takes well over an hour to travel the five miles from here to the train station. Other Things to NoteWe are decent people, not easily amused. We resent indolence, idle chatter and free expression.
