Interaction with GuestsMy husband, Ray, and I run Wynards Farm with the help of our daughter, Annabel, therefore, guests are greeted and shown their rooms and offered maps and literature, then taken to the dining room and if they wish around the garden. When we see guests at breakfast we enquire where they are going and offer the "local secrets" of picturesque routes and places. Most of our guests enjoy the privacy of having their own front doors, but usually my husband and I are around if we are needed. The NeighborhoodI just love where I live, as explained before it is quite unique being a little off the beaten track but close to all the local amenities. The views are wonderful, all around, even from my laundry room!! Getting AroundWool, 21/2 miles away, is the nearest train station. There are more buses running the season from the village and A352. Please respect our house and enjoy you stay there - leave it as you find it and for others to enjoy - Thank You Far from The Madding Crowd, and easily recognisable from the Wessex depicted in his books, the Isle of Purbeck and surrounding Dorset is historically known as 'Hardy Country'. Thomas Hardy's birthplace is now a National Trust property in Higher Bockhampton, near Dorchester, and is a good place to combine a step back in time with a picturesque woodland walk through Puddletown Forest and Egdon Heath, which inspired Hardy to write The Return of the Native. A short walk from 'Casterbridge' or Dorchester town centre, and Hardy's Study at the Dorset County Museum, is Max Gate, the atmospheric Victorian house designed and built by the author and where he lived from the age of 34 until his death in 1928. If you are spending the day in Dorchester the original mosaics and other artefacts on show at the Roman Town House, the 4000 year old hill fort at Maiden Castle or the ancient site of gladiatorial games at Maumbury Rings are all well worth a visit. Other Hardy memorabilia are on permanent display at the church at East Lulworth. At the Norman church in Bere Regis you can view the Tuberville Chapel and family vault that started the tragic chain of events in Tess of the D'Ubervilles. Other areas of interest include Tyneham Village. Owned by the Ministry of Defence this 'ghost' village is only accessible when the Lulworth Ranges are open to the public. The village and surrounding heathland was commandeered by the War Office just before Christmas 1943 for use as military firing ranges in preparation for the D-Day landings. The 225 inhabitants were given a month to evacuate their homes in the 'National Interest' and the last person to leave pinned the following notice on the church door. 'Please treat the church and houses with care; we have given up our homes where many of us lived for generations to help win the war to keep men free. We shall return one day and thank you for treating the village kindly'. The displaced villagers intended to return after the war but it was not to be. The houses in the village are in ruins but the church and school house have been under preservation since the 1970s. The school house now appears 'frozen in time' as if the children had just left with the final lesson taught still on their desks. The church is a living museum and has a very interesting information area all about the people who lived at Tyneham. The good news is it is free to visit and well worth it! When the ranges are open you can explore Worbarrow Bay a broad shallow inlet just east of Lulworth Cove. The walk is one of the most stunning routes along the South West Coast Path crossing the Arish Mell Gap, and over to Mupe Bay, a shingle beach mirror image of Worbarrow. The inhabitants of Worbarrow were relocated in 1943 due to War Office land requisition, in the same manner as Tyneham, but little remains today of the eight cottages and coastguard station where the families once lived. The cliffs at the eastern end of the bay form a promontory known as Worbarrow Tout where you can often find exposed shale and limestone containing dinosaur footprints and small fossils. Less than 10 kilometres north of the Pink House you'll find Monkey World - home to over 230 individuals including the largest group of chimps outside Africa. Prior to their rescue many of the primates were neglected, kept in unnatural conditions, or experienced unbelievable cruelty. Now you can observe them living and breeding in 65 acres of beautiful Dorset woodland - which is also well laid out to the public with food and drink outlets, picnic areas and forest walks. At the Bovington Tank Museum is the world's broadest and best collection of tanks. Follow the Tank Story, take a look at almost 150 tanks in the Discovery Centre, and check out the Tank Displays. There is also an impressive interactive exhibition featuring World War One Allied and German dugouts and trenches in addition to World War Two air-raid shelters, complete with recordings of an actual bombing, and even an Air Raid Warden's kitchen full of original personal items. Check listings for special events and open days when you can watch displays and even get on board a real working tank! And at the village of Moreton, about 15 minutes drive from Lulworth, you'll find Lawrence of Arabia's cottage at Clouds Hill. The property is managed by the National Trust and open to the public. The Tea Rooms at Moreton are great for a traditional Dorset cream tea and are also open for Sunday lunch

The SpaceOur cottage is a fabulous light and airy three storey Edwardian cottage with stunning views of both open countryside and the sea... It's got three bedrooms, and can accommodate five people. It has a well-equipped, modern kitchen, two bathrooms and a sink/loo off the master bedroom at the top of the house. There is a large deck-area outside, with patio furniture and large sun brolly. A couple of steps down to the garden lead to an area where you can barbecue. We welcome up to two well-behaved dogs and the garden is as far as possible dog-proof! A gate at the foot of the garden leads on to the road. There is off-road parking for one small-ish car, but turning room is very tight. Easier to park on the road and walk up the garden to the house. Guest AccessGuests have the whole house to themselves. Interaction with GuestsWe live a few miles away and know the area, so can offer guests advice and recommendations. We're happy for guests to phone us with any queries, and will do our best to ensure they have a happy and enjoyable time. The NeighborhoodThe village is along a quiet road leading only to the inn and coast, yet within short driving distances are the seaside resorts of Weymouth and Swanage, the county town of Dorchester and the historic market town of Wareham. The village pub, The Smugglers Inn, is just 300 yards walk from the cottage and is renowned for its good food and ambience. There has been an inn on the site since the 13th century. Osmington Mills and the surrounding area was painted by the landscape artist John Constable in the early 19th century and he spent his honeymoon here in 1816. Situated on the South Coast Path between Durdle Door and Weymouth, the area offers opportunities for a wide range of interests: For the natural historian, an enormous variety of wildlife exists within a diverse range of habitats dictated by the geology and geography of the World Heritage Centre-classified Jurassic Coast. For those who like their activity wet, coasteering on the rocky coastline, kayaking, sub-aqua, fishing, or just plain swimming are available (as well as sand-castle building on the beach.) Evidence of ancient (and more recent) settlements and activity are all around, and offers an interesting aspect to any excursion, especially accompanied by an OS map. Nearby, the Isle of Portland is a rich source of interest. Horse-riding and golf are both available close by. Getting AroundIdeally, own transport is required. The nearest bus stop is 0.8 miles away and buses operate to Weymouth (6 miles), where there is a mainline station for trains to Dorchester and London. Walking from the cottage to the centre of Weymouth would take about one and three quarter hours via the South Coast Path. Other Things to NoteParking directly outside the house is possible but a little tricky. Also, the surface is very uneven and guests should take extra care. After unloading, we find it easier to park down on the road and enter the house via the garden. Please be considerate of our neighbours' access requirements, particularly if your car is large.

The SpaceThe whole space is self contained and has its own entrance. This is through the white gate at the top in photograph 6 showing side view of Artist's Retreat. Car parking available for 2/4 cars in front of the owner's house. The main bedroom has a double bed looking out over garden. To enter the main bedroom you have to go through the space which has the 2 single beds. Bathroom is in a separate private space next to both bedrooms, and has a shower, loo and washbasin. For safety reasons in the winter months when wood burner is likely to be lit it is advised that the space is NOT toddler friendly. Guest AccessAccess to garden. Interaction with GuestsHelp provided if necessary as owner lives in main house. The NeighborhoodQuiet village location where Sir John Constable the painter came for his honeymoon. Close to many beautiful locations to interest the Thomas Hardy enthusiast. Stunning walks along Jurassic coast which are easily accessible from Artist's Retreat. Osmington Mills is the nearest access to sea - 15 min walk from house or 3 mins by car. It also offers the Smugglers Inn where lunches and suppers are served. For others restaurants research Weymouth and Portland. The Oasis Cafe, 10mins drive away towards Weymouth and right on the beach does breakfast, brunch, lunch and suppers (weekends only). Wind and kite surfers use this beach to launch from. There is a good fish and chip shop (takeaway) called Stacey's, 5 mins drive away just down the main road at the bottom of the hill with the white horse etched out on the hillside. The Crab Shack Cafe close to Portland offers a more expensive fresh seafood meal (advisable to book). Weymouth Harbour which is very pretty and often hosts interesting old sailing boats offers other restaurants varying in price, including a Prezzos and fish and chips. Dorchester (20 mins drive) is another popular place to eat and has a Carluccios, Pizza Express, Cote and Wagamamas in the Old Brewery. For a 'vintage' and very friendly experience try Re-Loved on the main shopping street. Further afield is Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's River cafe near Axminster (advisable to book) but make a day out and visit Lyme Regis or Mapperton House (where the Cary Mulligan/Far from the Madding crowd was filmed) on the way. Beaminster near Bridport has the lovely Brassica restaurant which has excellent food at good prices (advisable to book). The South West Coast Path can be started from Osmington Mills if wished or Ringstead. One swiftly mounts to the higher and more dramatic cliffs at Whitenothe and then on to Bat's Head, Durdle Door and Lulworth. As a cliff walk it is without equal, an absolute roller coaster that gets even better to the east of Lulworth Cove which is owned by the MOD. (Before heading east of Lulworth make sure that the Lulworth Gunnery Range is open to the public. It is safe to walk when the red flags are not flying -most weekends). The horseshoe hollow of Worbarrow Bay is every bit as lovely as Lulworth, after which the Purbeck coast throws up one surprise after another. First, the gaunt crags of Gad Cliff; then Kimmeridge and its marine reserve, followed by the Norman chapel on St Aldhelm’s Head and the tide-washed terraces of Dancing Ledge. And finally, beyond Swanage, the procession of sculpted cliffs and towering chalk stacks known as Old Harry Rocks, marking the end of the Jurassic Coast. Ringstead Bay is 10 mins drive or 30 mins walk away with a little basic cafe and shop. (charges for parking). This also has a launch/beach for small sailing craft, kayaks, windsurfers and kite surfers. You can swim from Ringstead and the sea sometimes offers waves for surfers. For more surfing look to Kimmeridge. Most of the coast nearby offers beautiful swimming in its clean waters and the host can recommend advice on safety and areas which are more isolated. Weymouth Sands beach offers the Blue Flag clean and very safe lifeguarded bay where King George III bathed and along the front is Lawrence of Arabia's favourite bar. He would drive from his house, Clouds Hill at Moreton (NT property), and park his 998cc Brough Superior "Rolls Royce of motorcycles" outside the Royal Hotel. Weymouth has a very pretty Georgian frontage where one can walk along the promenade and appreciate a classic 'Punch and Judy' experience on a small scale. There are less crowded areas such as the Greenhill area near the Sealife Centre where children and adults can swim and play in the sand (just a little distance up from Weymouth Sands). It also has lifeguards and in the summer two swimming rafts. For teenage boys/girls there is a skatepark near the Sea Life Centre( charges). In Dorchester the skatepark if free. Sailing (including boat hire and lessons) is available at the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy which staged the 2012 Sailing Olympics. It is located along the road to Portland. Portland harbour is a favourite for windsurfers. Portland is an interesting area. Its charm is not instantly appreciated but in May and June the walk along the cliffs is lovely with its wild flowers, peregrine falcons and coastal views. In high winds at Portland Bill Lighthouse (open to the public) as the sea crashes against its famous stone cliffs one has an opportunity to behold the power of the sea and be given a guaranteed thrill. You can swim at Church Ope cove and a genuine pirates gravestone with its carved hourglass can be found on the walk down. The water in the cove has a unique cloudy turquoise blue colour due to the white stoned sea floor. The Chesil Beach which joins the mainland at Weymouth to the Isle of Portand is one of the geological wonders of the world. The enormous bank of pebble beach is worth the climb and again is exhilarating in high winds. It is majestic in its size and sweep and quite something to experience. Drive to the Portland Heights Hotel to see it from above and melt into the distance towards West bay and Lyme Regis. The Fleet which is a desolate lagoon runs along the coast behind the Chesil beach has another unique atmosphere. It leads to places such as Abbotsbury with its 14th century Chapel and Tithe Barn (largest in England), Swannery and Sub-Tropical gardens which are all places worth seeing, especially at Easter when the camellias and rhododendrons are out. Seeing the baby swans and eggs in the Spring is very exciting and fun for all ages. For fossil hunters and lovers of The French Lieutenant's Woman Lyme Regis makes for a lovely day out with its famous stone cobb and walk along its romantic undercliff. Chideock and Charmouth are the places to find fossils. Maiden Castle is an Iron Age Hill fort just outside Dorchester. See it for its size as it is the largest in Europe. Children of all ages enjoy climbing its enormous dips and hollows. Many people find Bovington Tank Museum interesting, exciting and useful on a wet day. It is not far away and just above Lulworth Cove. Finally, Craigs Dairy is a walk up the drive and across the main road from the Artist's Retreat where one can buy a takeaway cup of fresh coffee, fresh meat, milk, eggs and other food necessities. It also offers a tearoom, Farm Shop and their own dairy made ice-cream. For other shops there is a small Co-op and Spa in Preston down towards Weymouth (5 mins). An Asda near the harbour, a big Co-op near Littlemoor, a Morrissons in Weymouth on the Dorchester road and a Waitrose in Dorchester. Getting AroundThere are buses to Weymouth, Dorchester and other villages from outside The Sly Fox in Osmington but service is limited. Other Things to NoteThe kitchen/living area has a wood burning stove which adds a warm countryside atmosphere. Enough wood provided by owner for 1/2 evenings. Extra wood available (at supermarket price) from the owner. There is a radiator in the bathroom and each bedroom area which comes on in the morning and evening in spring and winter months. For safety reasons in the winter months when wood burner is likely to be lit it is advised that the space is NOT toddler friendly.

Monkey World and The Tank Museum are about 5 miles away. This part of Dorset also has a rich literary history, notably Thomas Hardy, whose house (Max Gate) is 12 miles away in Dorchester. During peak season, ie in July and August we accept three durations of bookings: Weekends ie Friday to Sunday/Monday, Week short stays ie Monday to Friday and Full Weeks ie Saturday to Saturday. The NeighborhoodThere are two fabulous pubs in Lulworth village, both of which are within walking distance, although it is a steep climb. Tyneham village is well worth a visit. It is a deserted village in the middle of the army ranges and is being restored. The walk to Worbarrow Bay from there is worth the effort but there are no facilities for eating and drinking. Getting AroundThere is a bus stop at the site entrance for getting to nearby towns such as Weymouth and Swanage and we have noticed local taxi firms running from the village to the holiday park. We also believe that the site offers bicycles for hire. Other Things to NoteThere is one car parking space allocated to the caravan so please respect that. If you bring more than one car, you will need to park it in the public car park, overlooking the cliff and the normal site charges will apply.
