Here are the warm river springs of Homosassa whereupon manatees seek the warmth during the Winter months from the cold sea of the Gulf. During these months there are numerous opportunities to swim and snorkel with these 'sea cows'. However other months of the year these river inlets provide relaxing days 'messing about on the river' via the numerous boat hire stations or having a long lazy lunch/dinner sitting in idyllic riverside locations in the warm climate overlooking unspoilt nature.
Boating, canoeing and kayaking is available. Fishing is abundant and diverse with freshwater and saltwater options.
Land based recreation and choices are also plentiful. The area features many golf courses, hiking and biking trails, abundant wildlife, horseback riding, a multitude of parks. The county has over 152,000 acres set aside for wildlife preserves making the area a popular destination for people interested in experiencing Florida at its best - natural and unspoiled.
Homosassa is the home of the Wildlife Park which is worth a visit to see the natural 'bush' wildlife.
Slightly north of Homosassa is the town of Crystal River and its Heritage Village, Fort Island Beach & Citrus Mall. Travelling south is the next town of Weeki Wachee & larger town of Spring Hill. At Weeki Wachee there is a waterpark with its mermaid water show & Pine Island beach.
