The SpaceThe Palms Cliff House Inn is an 8 room boutique Bed & Breakfast Inn that offers many of the amenities available at large resorts while maintaining the feel and spirit of Aloha that is reminiscent of Old Hawai'i. All rooms have private entrances, baths, and lanais. We serve a full hot breakfast daily.Come Home to The Palms Cliff House Inn. The Inn overlooks Pohakumanu Bay. In Hawaiian, pohaku literally means rocks and manu means bird. The Koa'e Kea bird (also known as the White-tailed Tropicbird) which is almost all white with long graceful white streaming tail feathers, is frequently seen over the bay soaring high, gliding in the trade winds looking for small fish to feed on. The Koa'e Kea nests in the crevices of the surrounding rocky cliffs. Therefore, the name of the bay, Pohaku (rock), Manu (bird) refers to the Koa'e Kea that nest in the rock cliffs. Our location is the first area north of Hilo that has cliffs sutible for the birds to nest. When you enter the Inn, look to each side of the main doors. The White and black Kahili that stand guard at the entrance represent the Koa'e Kea of Pohakumanu Bay. Guest AccessGuests have 24-hour access to our guest lounge which provides DVD's to borrow, small snack shop (surcharge), Microwave, Games, and free WiFi . Guests also have access to outside property which include fruit tree, the breakfast lanai and lounge chairs in grass cliff-side. The NeighborhoodThe Palms Cliff House Inn is located in Honomu on the Big Island of Hawai'i. The village of Honomu, 13 miles north of Hilo on the Hamakua coast, once was a bustling community that catered to the sugar industry. It was populated with saloons, a hotel/bordello, stores and, for good measure, several churches. Today Honomu is better known as the gateway to Akaka Falls, a scenic attraction that draws an estimated 1 million visitors a year. A stroll through this tiny community (population 541) will call to mind remnants of its past. Wooden broadwalks, railings and buildings with false fronts can still be seen housing antique and craft shops, eateries and Ishigo's Grocery and Bakery. Ishigo's was established in 1910 and serves an enticing array of baked goods from recipes passed down for generations. Of note is the fact that Honomu has public restrooms, which are not plentiful on the Hamakua Coast. But it doesn't have a gas station. Getting AroundThe best way to get around on the Island would be by rental car. There are also taxis and the Hele-On bus system. We provide free on-site parking in the designated parking stalls.

We are not connected to the island's grid power system. Our solar panels charge a large bank of deep cycle batteries all day in order for us to have power around the clock. The Space15 miles up the Hamakua coast from Hilo town on the Big Island of Hawaii. 30 acres (2 horses, 1 non-barking dog, 10 chickens, and 4 cats), as well as a beach part a mile away leave guests plenty to do, though you will definitely want a car, so you can visit the volcano and the large white-sand beaches on the island's other side. The house (it really IS a tent--think those greenhouse quonsets) is a two-story with upper and lower lanais, and the views include both ocean and mountain. We're totally off-grid (solar with generator back-up), so we use as little power as possible, though there is satellite tv, laundry, fridge/microwave/freezer/dishwasher, like "normal" places. Super easy to find. Tight-knit neighborhood. Gated--to keep our wild pigs not "bad guys." I don't cook. Period. But there's a well appointed kitchen, if you do. Bathroom has shower, but no tub. (Ocean's pretty close, if you need to soak....) We love it. You may, too.

Other Things to NoteWe have three sweet and friendly dogs here on the farm who roam freely within our completely fenced in 15 acres. They’re a good little bunch and we hope you enjoy them. We live on a sustainable family farm in paradise, and are passionate about farm to table meals! We raise our own cows to help us keep the grass cut and also to keep our freezer full of beef. Our cows graze freely on our land and live happily and healthfully, playing and basking in the Hawaii sunshine. We have a flock of free range chickens as well and collect fresh eggs daily. When available we will put some in the fridge for you. Also we have fresh fruit on the farm that we happily share. Our wide variety of bananas, papayas and pineapples are growing in abundance as well as beautiful squash and other seasonal veggies. If you appreciate real, fresh food come visit to experience a true taste of Hawaii!

Thus it makes the perfect base from which to explore the entire island. You can stay in the same spot for you whole vacation, without having to check out and into different rentals. It's a short drive to all the sights: The volcanoes national park with its many points of interest (not the least the live volcano!), hiking trails and lava tubes, is a short drive to the south. All the spectacular waterfalls and scenic canyons and zip lines are along the Hamakua Coast just north of us. The most pristine snorkel tide pools in all of Hawaii are on the easternmost point of the island. There are over 80 swimming beaches around the Big Island, and 8 of them are within a few minutes of our property. Even if you wish to visit the touristy Kona side, it's less than 2 hours away, and a beautiful scenic drive whichever route you take. The Kapehu house accommodates 10 maximum. The cleaning fee is variable, usually between $70 and $175, based on the number of cleaning crew hours, and will be deducted from your deposit before the balance of your deposit is refunded. Most of the time it's around $100, and guests who do some clean up before checkout can keep the cleaning fee at the low end of the range.More details can be found on our website: www.kapehu.com. Additional fees: Hawaii state requires 2 taxes on lodging which total 13.417% Only 10 miles or 15 minutes from downtown Hilo, nestled in the lush Hamakua hillside overlooking the ocean. Twenty minutes from Hilo international airport. The Hilo side of Hawaii is the lush and beautiful side, where all the streams and waterfalls and scenic canyons are. We have 2 streams and a small waterfall on the Kapehu estate. Five miles away is the spectacular Akaka Falls State Park. There are 2 gorgeous botanical gardens within a few minutes of the Kapehu estate and several zip lines. There are 8 black sand beaches within a few minutes drive (less crowded than the Kona beaches), where giant friendly sea turtles will come and swim with you. One of the best snorkeling reefs in the Pacific Ocean is just south-east of Hilo on the eastern point of the island. Volcanoes National Park is 3/4 hour to the south; you'll want to visit it several times in order to see many of the sights. (From the Kona side you'd have to drive more than 2 hours to get to Volcanoes Nat'l Park.) The Hilo side is cooler than the Kona side, because we have the sweet gentle trade winds constantly blowing in from the east. Also, we rarely-to-never get vog (toxic sulfuric acid smoke from the volcano) because the wind blows the vog away from us and toward Kona. We searched for 8 years to find the very best location to be in Hawaii. We found it at Kapehu!

We are steeped in all that is natural - the wind chimes sing, the winds blow through the multitude of trees and plants and shrubs, the light changes - a little rain, a little wind, sometimes a lot, and we live in deep peace and gratitude.
