The SpaceThe Carriage House at Bowser by the Sea is the perfect place to put your feet up and read a good book...or write one. It's the place to bring your camera and a pocket full of empty SD cards. It's the place to access your adventurous spirit with your hiking boots, kayak or compass. It's the place to bring your sketchbook and a fist full of drawing pencils. It's the place to visit with your girlfriends, your family, or that couple you always have so much fun with. It's the place for meaningful conversation, belly laughs and board games. Or it's the place to enjoy your own good company. Centrally located, it's the place to call home base and take day trips to explore the other parts of the Island. It's the place to stroll the shoreline in either direction to contemplate how things are going, and make plans for what's next. Whatever it is that allows you to catch your breath, there's something rather magical about the west coast - and in particular - about spending time on the shores of the Salish Sea. Fall asleep to the sound of crashing waves during a winter storm, and the spirited bark of the sea lions in the spring when the herring arrive. Wake up to the comforting sound of the loon in the fall, and the eagles calling from the trees above you any time of year. And summer...well everything is just a little more magical in the summer. From the mighty squawk of the heron as it glides through the air, to cruise ships sailing past in the distance, to the sound of pleasure boats motoring past in search of 'the big one', to the crackle of the beach fire as the sun quietly sets. And these are just the west coast treats for your ears. We haven't even mentioned the feast for your eyes, like the spicy hues that fill the sky at sunrise, or the sea life to discover during low tide. When you arrive to the Carriage House the first to greet you will be the Orca artistically carved into the shingles. Climb the staircase to the Carriage House and you'll quickly discover that you'll be nestled under a 600 year old eagle tree. We hope you remember to bring your camera, there is a lot of eagle activity up there. Guest AccessThe Carriage House on the family property but is a separate, detached building from the family home. Along with full access to the Carriage House's 850 sq ft, guests have access to the beach and fire pit. Guest parking is also offered. It's called The Gulf Islands; despite (when viewing the area on a map) there is no sign of a gulf anywhere in the vicinity… Why? Because during the Age of Exploration an inaccurate presumption made by the first European seafarers to the area lead to the belief that the Strait of Georgia was an enclosed body of water. Misnomer aside, the Gulf and its picturesque islands are one of British Columbia's most popular destination points. With a temperate climate, and sparkling waters, this pseudo-Mediterranean corner of Canada offers some of the most unique island getaways on the Pacific Coast. In total, 14 islands comprise the Gulf Islands: the southern islands of Gabriola, Galiano, Kuper, Mayne, North and South Pender, Saltspring, Saturna, Thetis and Valdes as well as the northern islands of Denman, Hornby, Lasqueti and Texada. The islands and ocean are rich with flora and sea life. In fact, due to the abundance of Garry oaks, wild lilies, kelp beds and Orca whales, Parks Canada established the area as the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve in 2003. Some of these islands are quieter and primarily populated by residents while others are popular with visiting tourists and summer-cottage dwellers. Either way, most are accessible by either ferry or floatplane and each has a distinct flavor that sets it apart from its neighbours... Bowser by the Sea is the place to put your feet up and read a good book...or write one. West coast casual is the best way to describe this warm, charming little getaway retreat. High ceilings, reclaimed wood flooring and wainscoting, antique stained glass and paned windows salvaged from the famous Oak Bay Beach Hotel in Victoria, antique furniture, beach rock floor in the walk-in shower and just 40 steps to the beach...

Interaction with GuestsOne of the reasons we love to do Air Bnb is meeting and having a visit with new people as if they were visiting family. Of course you will explore the area and do your own thing but you are also welcome to hang out and relax. Since the summer of 2015 we have welcomed new friends from Montreal, Australia, Reno Nevada, Germany, Italy, France, Switzerland, Australia, the lower mainland and Alberta. Being located mid island we are a little away from the tourist scene but not far from many points of interest. We are generally around in the evenings to help you with recommendations. We have projects that we work on from home in the mornings and love exploring the Island ourselves in the afternoons. The NeighborhoodThere is a unique path through the blackberry bushes that takes you to the ocean. The closest beaches to us are rocky but great for fishing, walks, and watching wildlife. We love the Sandbar Cafe for a great meal with a view...just 2 km away. In summer, Qualicum Bay has an Ice Cream place, Henri's Kitchen, the Tidal Taco shop and the Karavan Kanteen a mobile with Ukrainian food and gourmet burgers. Bowser has a delightful cafe. Getting AroundLots of parking and you will need a vehicle to get to most places around but the ocean is only about a 10 minute walk. This is a great location for either heading to Tofino or returning from there. We are only 35 minutes to Courtenay and an hour from Nanaimo. Qualicum Beach is about 20 minutes away. Other Things to NoteWe have 2 tiny dogs who stay home when we are working. Lilly is 11 years old and will bark when you first arrive but after a good sniff of your feet she will be your friend. Penny is still a puppy and will be shy at first. She has also been known to try to get out the front door so please make sure not to give her an opening. We are 420 friendly and have great smoking decks.
