The SpaceNamed for its Union Street location and domestic tranquility, A More Perfect Union is located exactly mid-town and provides a comfortable home base for jaunts around Hudson or farther afield. With all the necessities and niceties of home provided, including a fully equipped kitchen (fridge, oven, microwave, toaster, coffee maker and dishwasher) you can make coffee or meals on your own schedule, or host an intimate gathering complete with table linens and candelabra. There's also a barbecue on the patio, and enough room for a small party in the completely unique yin-yang garden!
This house was built shortly after the Civil War, and the public spaces — living room, dining room and kitchen — are spacious with high ceilings. The bedrooms (one with a queen-size bed, two with full) are cozy, and generously appointed with soft linens, blankets, pillows and rugs. All the beds are super comfortable.
The kitchen includes a pantry with essentials like olive oil and balsamic vinegar, and the bathroom is stocked with toiletries including toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, band-aids, body lotion, rubber duckies, emery boards, an iron and blow dryer... plus a clawfoot tub and enough pristine white towels to make Leona Helmsley weep.
The entire apartment is cozy, clean and restful. You might want to pick up some wine, order a couple of pizzas, throw a movie into the DVD player, and just relax... The whole experience is like borrowing a friend's home.
••• PLEASE ALSO SEE MY SECOND-FLOOR APARTMENT, BLUE SKIES, WHICH CAN COMFORTABLY ACCOMMODATE SEVEN PEOPLE (OR EIGHT, DEPENDING), AND IS LISTED HERE ON AIRBNB AS "BRIGHT, CHARMING 3-BR APT IN HUDSON." ••• Guest AccessThe first floor is a private, 1,300 square-foot apartment unto itself entered from gracious Union Street, with a back door into an enclosed yin-yang garden filled with buddhas and equipped with a barbecue. The apartment, whose ideal location — smack-dab in the middle of Hudson — cannot be beat, shares only its entry and rear hallways with the upper stories of the house, and has its own thermostat and air conditioning in every bedroom. Interaction with GuestsI am reachable by e-mail or phone from booking through your stay — and usually available in person while you're here. I do my best before you arrive to fulfill any specific requests, then respect the privacy of your apartment (unless called upon) after greeting you with the keys when you get here. The NeighborhoodJust around the corner from the tranquility of Union Street, the bustle of Hudson's main drag beckons. Warren Street is a burgeoning thoroughfare stretching from the rippling Hudson River to a fountain in the town square. In between you'll find an intriguing range of restaurants, cafes and hole-in-the-wall guerrilla eateries reminiscent of the West Village, art galleries, boulangeries, boutiques, antiques, and all things fashionable for home and humans. In 10 minutes, you can also lose yourself in rolling countryside framed by the Catskills. Getting AroundThe heart of Hudson is less than a minute's leisurely stroll from the house, and there is street parking all around. Hudson is about 120 miles from New York City, a two-hour train ride from Penn Station, and 48 miles from Albany International Airport (ALB). Although you can walk anywhere in town from the house, the closest supermarkets, movie theaters and fast food are located in strip malls 1-1/2 to 3-1/2 miles away (thus preserving Hudson's remarkable architectural continuity). There are taxis and two places to rent bicycles (one of which also rents skis and kayaks) in town, and a car rental agency just outside Hudson in Greenport, about a mile- and-a-half from the house.
