At the foot of Pucara de Tilcara, among crop fields worked by Don Santos, lies Casa Andina. Constructed using traditional techniques according to the pre-Colombian architecture. The house is like an Incan fortress and has a terrace with a view of Pucara de Tilcara that will call your name until the sun sets, especially when you are going to have breakfast or read during siesta time. Inside there are four large bedrooms with closets. One double bedroom with an ensuite bathroom, another with two beds or optionally one double bed. The third bedroom has three beds (including a bunk bed). The fourth bedroom/study has a chimney, an impressive library so you can lose yourself in the stories of our ancestors, and a picture window with a view of Pucara de Tilcara. The house has two spacious bathrooms with antique bathtubs for relaxing with a bath under the molle tree after a day in the countryside. The stone living room has a leather couch across from the impressive chimney where guests can enjoy an exquisite high altitude wine. Large 8-person dining room integrated into the living room. The kitchen has large windows with a country-style table for having breakfast and drinking mate. In the BBQ or under the molle tree we can make roasts and meals in the clay oven. Guests can receive a visit from Lalo with his magical massages or from Eva for a yoga class, or walk to their nearby studio. This is where Santos Manfredi departs with his caravan of llamas to have breakfast in the Dupont high altitude winery or to have lunch in a nomadic tent in the hills. Or go by horse toward the Valleys. House Rules: In Casa Andina, we live in harmony with the local people and control our water usage, as it is very scarce because we are in a desert area and is used for irrigation. WATER MONITORING: In the unique desert landscape of Tilcara, without water there is no life. We kindly ask you to ration your use of water as much as possible. Casa Andina has a hot water heater with a 120-liter capacity. BATHROOMS: We recommend taking short baths, interspersed throughout the day. If you would like to enjoy an immersion bath in our bathtubs (from the Botana family estate in Don Torcuato, Buenos Aires*), we recommend taking turns or waiting for the hot water to refill (approx. 30 min.) Please do not adjust the temperature on the hot water heater (in winter it is set at the maximum temperature). Information: In Tilcara there is no domestic natural gas pipe network. We use bottled gas (the tank is located behind the molle tree on the south-eastern side of the house). Using this with the oven and the hot water heater is complicated, which is why balanced draft "Eskabe" style gas heaters do not work, even though they are installed. WASHING MACHINE: In winter, we cannot use the electric heaters, low consumption heaters or the washing machine at the same time due to an electrical problem. (See ELECTRIC CURRENT) Should you need to use the washing machine, please inform us when you arrive so we can organize dates for someone to go to the apartment and help you with the machine. FIRE PREVENTION: Information: As this is a family home in a rural area, we do not have fire prevention measures because the electric current is low-voltage. (See ELECTRIC CURRENT) CHIMNEYS: The chimney is a gift from the heavens, but trees are scarce in this area and we need to use them wisely. The wood pile, which is enough for the chimney flue to work properly, is a luxury few people have because it has to be brought in from far away. We kindly request that guests ration firewood and take extreme precaution in the following cases: Firewood that is on fire should never be outside the chimney flue. (It should be placed in the center of the chimney, far from the openings.) Improper placement of lit firewood can cause a house fire and is in fact the main cause behind house fires. Do not leave a lot of logs in the chimney when you leave the house or go to sleep. Do not place rugs, furniture, blankets, clothes or any other flammable material near the chimneys. Do not use the chimney as a BBQ (we have one outside that uses firewood and coal) or to heat food or beverages. Do not use the shovel to move embers under any circumstances. Throwing flammable substances in the chimneys is strictly prohibited (alcohol, wine, perfume, etc.). Do not put branches, trunks, or other wood that has not been specifically intended for the chimney in the chimney. (Please note that firewood for the BBQ must not be used in the chimney in the house). Do not burn paper, coal, candles, incense, branches, leaves or any other object besides firewood. Do not touch the handle of the chimney flue on either of the two chimneys. Do not use water to put out fires. Keep the firewood dry and in the basket, far from the chimney. How to avoid smoke: With respect to combustion, there can be a lot of smoke when a fire is first lit and the ember is formed. Because the chimney will be going when you arrive, please remember that opening windows or doors can create an air current that affects the flue and generates smoke. The chimney flue system and the proper positioning of firewood (in the center of the chimney hood) will always prevent smoke from getting out into the rooms of the house. Another way of reducing smoke is by using only the firewood we prepare for your stay. The landlords will pass by the house in the afternoon every day (between 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm, depending on the arrangements made with guests) to replenish the firewood supply. Please kindly inform us if you do not know how to use the chimney when you arrive. ELECTRIC CURRENT We live in the Empire of the Sun. Casa Andina was designed following Pre-Colombian construction techniques, using adobe, dirt roofs, stone walls, and dual pane picture windows that keep in the sun's heat on cold nights and keep the house cool during the day, since we live in a high altitude desert that experiences wide-ranging temperatures. Because this is a rural area, electric current is another luxury few people enjoy. We specifically request that on winter days when all the low consumption electric heaters are turned on, guests limit their use of other electrical appliances. FYI: each Ecosol heater consumes 1.4 amps. Not limiting the use of other electrical appliances on cold nights can make the thermal circuit breaker trip if the maximum energy/voltage provided by the company EJESA is exceeded (25 amps). If this happens you must inform us immediately so we can request that the company restore the heat. We recommend not using all the electrical appliances (TV, video/DVD player, music system, computers, kettle, electric toaster oven, which consumes a lot of energy!-, and chargers) at the same time because they exceed the electric capacity. Do not use space heaters as these appliances in particular use too much amperage (8 amps) and cause voltage peaks. Hair dryers also cause voltage peaks. When you finish taking a bath, please turn off the electric heater to use the hair dryer. The house has a working circuit breaker, but due to the ups and downs in electrical voltage in Quebrada de Humahuaca, it is not as sensitive as in the cities. Otherwise, the power would be short-circuiting all the time. This leads to our last recommendation. If you are coming to Casa Andina with children, you must keep a close eye on them and the electrical appliances, outlets, etc. WASHING MACHINE: In winter, we cannot use the electric heaters, low consumption heaters or the washing machine at the same time due to an electrical problem. Should you need to use the washing machine, please inform us when you arrive so we can organize dates for someone to go to the apartment and help you with the machine.
