The SpaceThe caravan is located on the hill plateau above our property and is completely private. We won't come up unless you need something or you would like us to show you how to use something. There is a large open area surrounded by bush. You can easily access the area with a normal car (you don't need a 4WD). There is a gas stove in the van itself as well as a campfire with hotplate and camp cooking gear. The amenities are pretty rustic (compost toilet and camp shower) however you are welcome to use the toilet and shower down at the house as well. There is wildlife around and you might see the occasional wombat or kangaroo. There's also lots of frogs at night. Guest AccessYou are free to wander around the property but we ask that you don't enter any sheds or paddocks. There are some lovely little bushwalks on the property. Interaction with GuestsWe are able to help with any directions or questions you have regarding both the caravan and the area. We can direct you to beautiful beaches and bushwalks (Mt Bushwalker is close by as well as the iconic Pigeon House Mountain walk). The NeighborhoodWe live on a 50 acre property around 13 minutes to the beach. While you will need a car to get around there is plenty of things to see and do close by (bushwalks, swimming at beach, shopping and dining at Milton, bowling at Ulladulla, tennis at Wandandian, Bike paths at Sussex Inlet and Huskisson, Cinemas, etc.). Getting AroundThere is no public transport nearby so you will need a car to get here. We are located around 30 minutes south of Nowra and 20 minutes north of Milton. We are around 13 minutes drive to the nearest beach at Bendalong (which is also the nicest). Other Things to NoteThe bathroom facilities are fairly rustic (compost toilet and camp shower) but you are welcome to use the toilet and shower facilities at the main house as well (1 - 2 minute walk).

Sleeps 6 MAXIMUM; 1 Queen bed, 1 Double bed, 1 Single bunk set Little cottage, big heart March 6, 2011 . Good wicket ... backyard cricket awaits. Matt Martel discovers a Tardis-like stay on the south cost perfect for beach-loving families. THE Beach House cottage in Berrara is the sort of place it's easy to underestimate. You drive along windy village roads, past tiny, gorgeously old-fashioned, wooden cliff top beach shacks with endless ocean views that cost $3 million to buy and you're getting quite excited because the blurb for this place advertises panoramic sea views, too. Then you get there and it's not even on the ocean side of the road, and all you can see are bits of sea (reasonably big but not panoramic) through the trees on the other side of a car park diagonally opposite. The cottage seems small. But when you enter you're pleasantly surprised. It's bigger inside than out, somehow. Advertisement: Story continues below There are two bedrooms, a long kitchen/dining/lounge area, a sunken second lounge area and a biggish bathroom. At first, we are puzzled about why you'd enter the house through the bathroom, which opens on to a little deck with an outdoor dining table and roof to shield you from the sun. But it's quite logical, really, when you think that guests are probably coming from the beach across the road: feet, legs, arms and hair are sandy from the surf, from being buried in the sand by smaller guests, from fossicking in the rock pools and running up and down the beach in excitement when dolphins are seen flashing through the waves. Pockets will be stuffed with rocks, small sea creatures, shells and more sand, and these fall out when guests, especially young ones, remove their clothing to wash the salt off. So, yes, it's sensible having a bathroom as the entrance foyer. Anyway, there are two other doors if anyone doesn't want to enter through the bathroom. The cottage seems newly redecorated and has a lovely, nautical-striped white and blue colour scheme, with touches of red. The doonas are crisp. Pillows are plump. The beds are soft and you can actually sleep in them, which means a lot when you're away from home and you miss your own bed. One bedroom has a double bed; the other has a double bed and bunks. The attention to detail is evident, with little ornaments in each of the bedrooms. If you get stuck with a rainy day, there are plenty of games and DVDs under the television and enough women's magazines to keep a doctor's surgery quiet. The kitchen is well stocked with any implement you might need. We ate on the deck watching the locals watch us, and watching the biggish bits of sea we could see. We fired up the barbie, which is large and placed conveniently close to the outdoor table in a sheltered little area of its own. The garden is large and flat, and could easily host cricket games and pretend camping. We could see evidence of kangaroos having visited recently and then we remembered we'd been warned that Berrara and Sussex Inlet are overrun with them. We'd heard apocryphal stories of kangaroos banging on the doors for food. But when we found them (or was it the other way round?), we had a magical moment. One smallish roo stretched out its paw to our daughter, aged six, who put her own hand in the roo's paw. Gravely, the kangaroo put its other paw on top of our small girl's hand. They stayed peering at each other in stillness for a moment, before the kangaroo wandered off and our daughter remembered to breathe. We wandered off ourselves in the car to explore and found a road that leads invitingly past a campground and alongside a lake, then a place to park and a path leading to a lagoon. We collected more stuff to turn out in the bathroom - gumnuts, stones, interesting sticks - and looked at the black swans. We still haven't washed the dirt off the car. When it does wear off, we'll have to go back for more. And we would go back, any day. The writer was a guest of The Beach House, Berrara, and Tourism NSW. Trip notes Where The Beach House, Berrara. (02) 4441 2135, holidaywithus.net.au. Getting there Take the Princes Highway towards Sussex Inlet. Turn left onto Sussex Inlet Road, then right onto Springs Road. You can also drive into Sussex Inlet township itself and turn right onto The Springs Road, driving through Swanhaven and Cudmirrah to Berrara. Either way is about three hours' drive from Sydney. How much Low-season weekends, $370 for two-night minimum stays. One week, low-season, $600. Style statement Crisp white and cream walls with polished floors and good use of space in a small, scorched beachside setting. Perfect for Lovely, low-key holidays with kids. Don't forget To bring real coffee, there's an espresso machine in the kitchen. Shame about The garden - bleak and surrounded by a sagging wire fence. Kudos Firm, unbroken insect-proof coverings on every outside opening. Take the kids. Yes, yes, yes. - Sun-Herald

The Chalet - Kangaroo Cabin This clean, contemporary, non-smoking chalet has a stained weatherboard exterior with a large wooden deck for alfresco dining. The combination dining and lounge room faces the water view. The cabin sleeps 5+ with one bedroom having a queen bed and the second having a combination double-single "trio" bunk. The couch in the lounge room can comfortably sleep a small child if desired. All rooms have ceramic tile floors except the bedrooms that are carpeted. The chalet has a fully equipped modern kitchen including electric stove with oven and grill, microwave, coffee plunger, teapot, toaster, water jug, quality kitchenware and fittings, iron and ironing board. The bathroom has a ceramic tile shower and basin with a separate toilet. In addition, there is the convenience of free shared laundry facilities (washers and dryer), and if you wish for that unbeatable freshness, there is a Hills Hoist. Kangaroo Cabin is equipped with a silent ceiling fan to supplement the natural summer ocean breezes and a shade sail over the deck for warm sunny days. A slow-combustion wood stove provides warmth for cosy winter nights. All windows and doors have screens. The gardens surrounding the cabin are all natives and provide stunning bursts of intense gold, orange, blue (yes, really), pink and magenta throughout the year. The many birds, particularly the rainbow lorikeets and rosellas that feed on the nectar and seeds, provide added colour and entertainment. If you wish entertainment beyond what the natural surrounds offer, there is a digital TV, DVD and stereo CD player. There is also a modest reading library, games for all ages and a family DVD collection. We recommend, however, your evening entertainment include finding constellations in the incredibly starry night sky to perhaps the serenade of the boobook owls. In any season, Kangaroo Cabin at Berrara Beach offers a variety of opportunities for relaxation in a beautiful, tranquil, natural environment. We invite you to come to experience for yourself the natural wonders at Kangaroo Cabin and take home idyllic memories of a lovely Aussie seaside vacation. Come and enjoy Kangaroo Cabin at Berrara Beach! Location and Activities - Berrara Beach, South Coast NSW The chalet looks out over Berrara Lagoon which is like a lake where you can swim, float or walk just 200 meters to Berrara Beach. You will hear the sound of the surf from inside Kangaroo Cabin and feel the ocean breezes scented with salt air from the deck. There is a reason for the name Kangaroo Cabin: In the mornings and at dusk you will be joined in the front paddock by any number of very friendly and curious kangaroos, some large, some juveniles, and occasionally, you'll see one still in the pouch! The property is bordered by Conjola National Park and Nature Reserve and is surrounded by bush and heaps of safe, open community play space for kids. The land in front and behind the chalet is all community property. You may use it and the paddock out back as much as you wish - a great spot for a friendly cricket match or football game. The front deck of the cabin is a perfect place to relax watching the kids play or swim in the lagoon, or just gaze lazily at the brilliant sunsets over the water in the twilight. No doubt you will see white bellied sea eagles gliding to or from their nests up the creek or be serenaded by the kookaburras, long time Berrara Beach residents. You can fish in the beach surf or prawn in the lagoon by moonlight. Bring a tinnie or kayak as the lagoon bends into Berrara Creek and meanders lazily through the National Park for four to five kilometres. The still, clear water magically mirrors the tall eucalypts along the shores. You'll find peaceful, secluded spots for a romantic lunch or swim as well as fantastic photo opportunities. Berrara Beach, just 200 metres at foot of the lagoon, is protected closest to the cabin for the little ones, and becomes a surf beach further along. The surfing, boarding and swimming are tremendous. It is not uncommon to see dolphins frolicking out in the surf. The beach stretches for two kilometres to the south, then over a headland called Mermaid Pool for many more kilometres of untouched beach backed entirely by the National Park. The name of this headland comes from the captivating tidal pool at its centre. The crashing surf at high tide provides spectacular photo ops. Snorkelling is popular on the south side of the headland. If you walk north from the lagoon mouth, the beach will take you towards Swan Lake. The lake is usually closed to the ocean but on rare occasions the sand is washed away. The geology of the area provides Berrara Beach with interesting rock formations and headlands. Low tide at the beach exposes intriguing rock pools just north of the creek mouth with sea stars, colourful anemones, camouflaged octopus and other marine life. The assortment changes with the seasons. When water sports are not on the agenda, there are plenty of other things to do year round. There are great walks and bike tracks of varying lengths along the shoreline and ocean bluffs as well as through the bush of the National Park. There is also a community tennis court just a short bike ride away in the village of Cudmirrah near the shore of Swan Lake. If you prefer, you can idle away your holiday on the cabin deck with some invited friends relaxing comfortably in canvas directors chairs having a drop of your choice while cooking over private gas BBQ overlooking the lagoon or in the fully equipped kitchen looking out on grevelias. If the temperature dips, you can move inside to the welcoming warmth of a wood fire and still admire those stunning sunsets and glistening waters through the floor-to-ceiling windows. In addition to sharing this beautiful natural environment with the kangaroos, you will also see possums and bandicoots, and a variety of lizards including Blue Tongue and Eastern Water Dragons who frequently sun themselves beside the cabin. The varied bird life is wonderful with 150 species listed for the area and changes seasonally. You may see the resident pair of satin bowerbirds, the endangered hooded plovers that nest along the ocean headlands (less than 50 in NSW) or the majestic sea eagles with an offspring. Parrots abound and are happy to be hand fed, including king parrots, rainbow lorikeets, crimson rosellas. With native plantings surrounding the cabin, numerous species of honeyeaters are regular visitors. The creek provides ideal habitat for a variety of water birds such as egrets, herons, kingfishers and ducks. An evening walk along the banks of the creek will often be rewarded with a sighting of a night heron feeding. Easter is a perfect time to see young ducklings and black cygnets. Out of consideration for the abundant wildlife, domestic pets are not allowed. Visitors' Comments (see more recent on the right-hand column) ** "We had a lovely Easter weekend here. The cabin is in a great location!" - The Motts, Birchgrove, NSW, 2002 ** "Great holy. Nice to sit outside and have brekkie, go and have a surf lesson and return for lunch." - The Ws, Penrith, NSW, 2003 ** "Thanks for quality glasses, kitchenware and fittings, and decent books and reading lights. Wanted to take it all home with us (it's OK - no need to count the cutlery!): the scenery, the lifestyle and the adventures. Many thanks!" - The D Family, Fitzroy, Vic, April 2006 ** "What a beautiful place to stay, even if only for a couple of days on our trip through Aussie and NZ. AMAZING! Welcome to Swanhaven and your 1960s holiday home, Burrawirrai. We were told that this Aboriginal name means 'by the water'. Swan Lake is across the road - only 30 metres away - with easy access to private sandy beaches, good fishing and very safe (predator-free!) swimming. Take a short walk to the end of Lake Drive where you can enjoy Swanhaven's picturesque recreation area with picnic tables, barbeques and a bike track to the next township of Cudmirrah. Burrawirrai accommodates six guests in two bedrooms and a small bunkbed room. A backyard retreat/sleep-out accommodates two extra adults and may be hired for a small additional fee. The bathroom has plenty of hanging space for beach towels, and includes a shower and tub combination. The lounge and dining rooms create a fantastic communal area with 3x3 seater lounges positioned for optimum bush and lake views. At the end of the day, Swanhaven's sunset will calm the most frazzled nerves! Set on a spacious corner block with native gardens and a huge four metre deep verandah, Burrawirrai faces National Park to the north and pristine Swan Lake to the west - only a stone's throw away. Be charmed by beautiful landscapes painted by artist, Lolita Hamilton (available for sale), quirky retro pieces, relaxed furnishings, and perhaps a visit from one of our resident possums or kangaroos. The South Coast awaits you at Burrawirrai. Getting There We are a scenic two and a half hour road trip from Sydney. Turn off the Princes Highway to go to Sussex Inlet, drive about ten kilometres then, before reaching Sussex Township, turn right into The Springs Road. After about three kilometres, turn right into Hoffman Drive. Continue for 150 metres and we are on the corner, in Lake Drive. Time for ... Swimming - The lake is suitable for young children who like to paddle. The water is shallow and so clean that the visibility is astonishing. Kayaking, sailing and windsurfing - The lake is safe enough to explore for hours. It is an enclosed waterway and only opens to the sea every three years or so. This makes for relatively predictable conditions. Waterskiing - There is a deeper part of the lake which lends itself to motorised water sports. Cycling - Whether on road, off road or along designated cycle tracks, cycling is the way to go. Watching a movie - There is a quaint cinema in the main road of Sussex Inlet, only five minutes by car. Visiting the Club - There are RSL and Bowling Clubs in Sussex Township. Courtesy buses pick-up and drop-off in Swanhaven. Going to the Beach - Berrara Beach is only a few minutes drive down the road. If you're feeling energetic, walk south for fifteen minutes to Cudmirrah Beach. Taking a drive to Milton - The place is full of curio shops, excellent cafes and award winning restaurants.
