The SpaceOur apartment is a top floor, north-east facing apartment, with glimpses through the tree tops to the escarpment and the ocean. It's in a small complex in Woonona, 1km from the beach, and has all amenities (including Wi-Fi) provided. The complex is private, as the entry is off the street and down a lane.
The apartment is filled with natural light, and is spacious and very cosy. It has recently been renovated and now includes bamboo flooring throughout and a rustic, open plan kitchen/dining/living area, a handcrafted recycled timber island bench with induction cooktop.
The study is equipped with a small TV, a fold-out futon, and a custom-built desk constructed from recycled pallets and reclaimed rosewood timber: comfortably set up your laptop and use our broadband wifi.
The bedroom has a green leafy outlook through a north-facing window. There's ample built-in cupboard space made available for your clothes (there is now also a toddler bed in the main bedroom).
The bathroom is spacious and includes laundry amenities: a washing machine, dryer and laundry sink. Linen, towels and a hairdryer are supplied.
In terms of food, we provide the basics, milk, butter, oil, salt pepper, vinegar, tea, sugar and some condiments.
There is a north-facing balcony.
* Please be aware that there is not lift and the apartment is on the second floor. Guest AccessThe external of the building is an 80s brick block. There are shared clothes lines and parking spaces for residents. At times the parking at the base of the building is busy, so you may need to park on the street and walk 30 meters down the lane to the complex. However, if upon arrival there is no parking available at the bottom of the building, you will be able to pull up near the steps around the back of the building to unload.
There is no lift and the flat is on the second floor. It will therefore not suit people with mobility issues. Interaction with GuestsGuests will have the apartment to themselves. We will either meet the guests upon arrival or leave the key conveniently for the guest. The NeighborhoodWoonona shops is a 5 minute walk from the unit, where you’ll find an IGA, a veggie shop, an organic shop (Manic Organic), tasty fresh Sushi, Thai, and a few other dining out options as well as other basic services, including pharmacies and a post office. All and Sundry is a great cafe at Woonona shops, offering good coffee and a seasonal breakfast/lunch menu.
Thirroul village is a 5 minute drive north, where you’ll find many more cafes, restaurants and some lovely retail shops. Our preference for food shopping is Flametree Community Food Co-op (fresh local produce and organic unpackaged food and groceries) and Thirroul Fruit Barn (good deli section).
The closest beach is just under a kilometre away. Quick to drive, but you can walk over an overhead bridge that crosses Memorial drive (the main road that goes into Wollongong) before walking down a quiet street to the beach. There's a cafe and ocean baths right there on the point. You’ll find loads of good surf spots nearby, including the famous Sandon Point, and beautiful bush and coastal walks all within a short drive.
There are a few good yoga studios nearby - in Bulli, Austinmer & Woonona - and a blissful day spa 10 minutes away in the escarpment in Austi. There are also 3 gyms in Woonona, a 5 minutes walk away.
If you follow the Grand Pacific Drive north along the coast the scenery is stunning. There's a few great places to stop along the way. Many people like to explore the boutiques on Moore Street in Austinmer, where you can also grab a coffee or a meal at Fireworks Cafe. You could visit the Wombarra sculpture garden or one of the many beautiful northern beaches or ocean baths. Stop at the Scarborough Hotel for a pub meal in the cliff-top garden with a stunning view and then continue across the SeaCliff Bridge to the beautiful Coalcilff beach, backed by spectacular cliffs. Stanwell Park beach is also gorgeous; and the stunning Royal National Park (30 mins) begins just a little further north.
Before hitting the national park, head inland a little to Helensburgh to explore the Sri Venkateswara Temple (and eat a delicious dhosa, served only weekends!) or check out the beautiful Govinda Valley Retreat and book in for a delicious vegetarian meal.
Every Sunday there's a farmers market in Bulli, 5 minutes from the house (Foragers Market) and on Friday morning there is a farmers market in Wollongong, a 10 minute drive south from our flat. Another 10 minutes further south visit the Nan Tien Buddhist temple. We are also only a short drive from Kiama, Berry or inland to the Southern Highlands. Getting AroundThere is a bus stop a short walk from the flat, where you can get a bus north to Thirroul (and further) or south to Wollongong. We are a 10 minute walk from Bulli train station and a 5 minute drive to Thirroul station, which is the point of departure for the express trains to Sydney.
The train trip is very pretty and from Thirroul train station Central Station in Sydney is only 1 hr 20mins.
Traveling to Sydney by car takes 1 hr and Canberra is also a straightforward, 2.5 hour drive. Other Things to NoteThis apartment is used as our home when we are in the Illawarra. Please care for it as you would your own :)
We do not have air conditioning. The building has many internal brick walls so stays pretty cool in the summer. Having said that, if you experience a prolonged heatwave (high 30s - low 40s for days) there is obviously the potential for the space to warm up. We provide fans and there is also good airflow to manage these conditions.
