The SpaceWe have a self contained flat (downstairs apartment in our house) in beautiful Picnic Bay on Magnetic Island. You'll have your own toilet and shower and a well set-up kitchenette equipped with a fridge/freezer, toaster, kettle and a couple of hotplates. There's also a stainless steel electric frypan. You'll also have your own TV and we'll provide tea and coffee makings. There's a ceiling fan and a pedestal fan in case you need it on warm days. And we recently put in an air conditioner that can be used as well. There's a private entrance to your flat, and we'll give you a key to your door. So it really is like your own place. We have a washing machine and a clothes line that you are welcome to use. The flat is a bit 70s in style...we must get that disco ball to finish it off! We have lived on the Island for more than 20 years* so can give excellent advice on the best places to go and where to see a koala. Please make contact with us by telling us a bit about yourself/selves before booking the space. (*We've lived in our present house since late 2012. We are gradually developing a permaculture garden which means, among other things, that our garden and grounds can look a bit like a farm at times. It's not a very manicured look as we are setting about long term sustainability with veges and fruit trees and constantly building our soil with mulching. You might also notice that we are renovating the house so don't be surprised to see some building materials about the yard.) Interaction with GuestsWe've travelled extensively using Airbnb - so we know what travellers are looking for - a good clean secure space with hosts that are friendly and helpful while not being obtrusive. The NeighborhoodWe are a 3 minute walk to glorious Picnic Bay Beach - a really nice swimming beach. In summer the local council puts up a stinger-free enclosure. The bus stop is on the way to the beach. The bus will take you all over the Island including, Nelly Bay, Arcadia and Horseshoe Bay. The Picnic Bay Pub is just near the bus-stop and the beach (less than 5mins walk down the hill). The Pub is quite often a music venue on the weekends. There's the RnR restaurant which serves better than your average pub food and is open just about everyday for lunch and dinner. There's also Alby's Chinese restaurant and The Picnic Bay Seafood Cafe (great for having take away fish 'n' chips at sunset on the beach). There's the fascinating Magnetic Island History and Craft Centre plus a beautiful 9 hole golf course - all about a 5 minute walk away. The Picnic Bay jetty is an Island landmark and is beaut for an evening stroll or maybe to wet a fishing line. It's less than 5 minutes walk away too. If dance parties are more your thing, X-Base is about a 15-20 minute walk, with spectacular headland views along the way. If you are coming home late at night be sure to take a torch for the bush track. X-Base hold the famous full-moon parties each month. There are some lovely walks you can take that begin close-by including Sails Rock, Rocky Bay, Cockle Bay and West Point. You can also visit the Ranger's Office to learn about the Island's National Park which covers 70% of the land mass. Getting AroundWe live less than a 5 minute stroll to the bus stop. Sunbuses run pretty regularly and will take you to all the populated bays. There's usually a timetable in the flat. Tickets are inexpensive and to find out more go to the Sunbus Townsville website. Cars, bicycles and scooters can all be hired on the Island. The ferry and barge terminal is in Nelly Bay. Buses meet almost every ferry. The walk from Picnic Bay to the heart of Nelly Bay is about 35 minutes. It's a picturesque walk best done in the morning or late in the arvo. Sometimes we can give you a lift over the hill too. Other Things to NotePicnic Bay is a great swimming bay. We often swim twice a day in the summer - in the morning and late afternoon or evening. If you are lucky to be here when there's a full moon, it's just amazing to watch the moon rise while floating in the water!

The SpaceSmall but lovely space with lots of natural light and an outlook over the front garden. Rates are available during December and January for the whole house as I will be away. A minimum stay of 5 nights would be appreciated. Ideally the cottage is suitable for two or three people. From March I have changed the listing back to just the bedroom where you share the house with me and my dog. I may be going away for the Easter holidays so then the whole house will become available again. Guest AccessMy home is your home. Enjoy cooking in the funky little kitchen, reading a book on the sun lounges or accessing the free wifi to write a great review. Interaction with GuestsThis is my home. I live and work full time on the island but will be around the corner house sitting during December and January. Well, chicken sitting really but with a pool! I love meeting new people and especially helping them enjoy everything that the island has to offer. The NeighborhoodOlympus Crescent in Arcadia is 'home to the gods'. Just kidding. This is a small quiet dead end street - if you keep going you will fall off the cliff and into the Coral Sea. No traffic, no noise, just the call of the wildlife and the sounds of the sea. Other Things to NoteTo get to the island you catch a passenger ferry from Townsville. It is a 20 minute ride and costs $32 return. The SpaceOur beach house is still open to visitors even though our warmer months approach. We had >800mL of rain in March which filled our tanks but made the road impassable for a few days. It has been mostly clear and sunny since. Between April and September is the best time to visit our little piece of paradise for people in southern hemisphere who are looking to escape their cold winters, however our spring and summer times are perfect for travellers from northern hemisphere who are looking to escape to a warm tropical island. We can offer a budget priced experience in a peaceful slice of paradise. The upper deck is 8x8 square metres and is fully screened with 360 degree views of bush behind and beach at the front. There is a desk with a magnificent view and a games table with a variety of card and board games for you to use including one that we developed called "Going Troppo!!" We have renovated our original kitchen (with refrigerator and gas stove) & bathroom downstairs, which is for guests sole use. We have kept many of the original artefacts on display. We have a one person kayak that guests are welcome to use. Our space is family friendly and young travellers also find it a good option as opposed to staying in traditional backer packing accommodation. Recently our thong trees were awarded 'island icon' status-come and find out why they grow so well at West Point!! Getting AroundThere is a bus company that provides a great service to most of the bays on the island but does NOT run to West Point. There are many hire car options on the island. Supermarkets are located in the main bays. We can also offer a pick up service from ferry terminal if you need it. If arriving by car, when you get to the West Point T junction, there will be a series of green arrows along the right hand track, to guide you to our green house and your accommodation. We might be able to give you a lift if you don't have transport. Other Things to NoteIn the cooler months you will need warm clothing in the evening and although the house is fully screened you may need insect repellent around dusk. A fan is available if needed but we do NOT have air conditioners. When guests reach the T junction at West Point, it is best to take the right hand fork and follow the track to the end. Follow the GREEN arrows which will lead you into our back yard. Do not take the road to the left as the track is soft sand where hire cars are not permitted. If you do not have transport, please send us a message through Airbnb and we will see if we can arrange a lift for you.

[ This Description left by a friend that has "lived" at west point for 6 months, is better than any I could come up with :) Thanks Dan. ] Paco's hut has been a delight to be in for our extended stay! The house is clean and comfortable with spacious rooms and large louvered windows to let the ocean breeze blow through. Laying in bed at night with the surf just a few meters away and the lights of Townsville across the bay is very peaceful. Paco , and his parents made us very welcome and did all they could to ensure a great stay, made us feel as friends rather than renters. A car is a good idea to access Paco's as it is 4 miles [ actually it is closer to five and that is 8 Kilometers in metric ] from town on a dirt road, but I had no problem catching rides from very friendly people coming out to do the excellent fishing and watch the beautiful sunsets. A very quiet place, very little cars after sunset, no streetlights, just loads of stars, and most of the neighbors are weekenders, not very many people around. The solar power for us was adequate, just had to go with the suns flow, and Paco has a gas [ petrol that is for us Ozzies ] generator backup that was easy to operate. Water catchement cisterns [ water tanks ] and shower worked good. Our first night had cute possums and Wallaby's on the deck and in the morning had many white Cockatoos and pretty Lorakeets join us for breakfast on the deck. Koala bears are also regular visitors in the eucalyptus trees outside the bedroom windows. (very cute but, warning, they can be noisy at night, along with the curlews...) I loved it so much there I didn't want to leave! The only thing that should be considered is that it IS the tropics in far NE Australia so there can be insects and other local species that share the island with you, the winter, spring and fall months are probably the best time to avoid this. I'll take the summer months Paco! :) I would and will be delighted to enjoy Paco's Hut and hospitality again. Isolated Part of the island with views back to Townsville , great for sunsets over the water and Fishing, boating, Nature spotting, walking on the beach. Best accessed by car or Boat.

A great nearby restaurant is Man Friday, a Mexican theme but they do other types of meals. We love the alfresco dining and the friendly owners. Stagger distance from your place is about 400 metres. Other Things to NoteOur property is part of the 'Land for Wildlife' program, and we value it's position adjacent to a habitat reserve. Please come prepared to enjoy falling asleep to the sounds of curlews wailing, echidnas ploughing, and possums squabbling, and waking each morning to an incredible dawn chorus! Practical stuff; In the hut you will have some cooking facilities these include a microwave, bar b que, toaster, kettle and a fridge. The huts have a loft where we can put either a double or single mattress. This area is accessed via a near vertical ladder, it is a bit of a cubby house. There are actually two huts on site joined by a deck. You can book both if you like.

The SpaceThis is the space our family and friends use- not a commercial bed and breakfast. It's a flexible, self-contained, informal space geared to outdoor family living. The 12 metre pool is long enough to swim laps, but also contains a large offset wading area at each end, ideal for little ones and learners. It is fully fenced to Australian safety standards and there is further perimeter fencing allowing you to close the cabana surrounds off from the main grounds so you can keep a close eye on the kids. The main cooking area is outside with a good view of both the pool and the kids’ play area. There is an electric barbeque, induction hotplates and an oven, so you keep the house cool while you cook and the kids play in our benign climate. This adjoins an outdoor eating area. Inside is a family size fridge and a kitchenette for preparing breakfast or midnight snacks. "Cabana" best describes the open plan holiday configuration. It is basically two large living rooms, each with glass sliding doors onto a poolside terrace; and one small bathroom with a toilet, shower and vanity. There is one double bedroom which adjoins one of the living areas. It can be screened for privacy through timber louvres and timber blinds, or you can leave it open so you can see through to the outdoor terrace and pool which is lit up at night. The second living area has a trundle bed configuration, meaning it is made up by day as a daybed and converts to two singles for sleeping. It's ideal for children as they have a second space to play indoors other than the main lounge. (The two beds are standard singles; one slides out under the other. That is, it doesn't convert to a double bed. Please note if you are 6 feet four you won't fit there too well. During the dry season we put up a magical children’s marquee in the garden which is a great place for quiet time. Walk to the supermarket, bottle shop, restaurants, chemist and medical centre. Stroll to the beach and marina down the street and to the children’s park looking out over the tropical waters of Cleveland Bay. The island bus stops just across the road. For a third or fourth child we have a daybed and a baby cot. We are in the process of restoring a vintage (1967) caravan which is set among the palm trees near the pool. This should be available from March 2017 for older children and/ or adults for a small additional cost. We supply a high chair, stroller and quality toys and linens, including beach towels, beach and pool toys, snorkelling gear, bikes, scooters; and kid sized torches for those scary evening walks in our “jungle”. We have an intelligent selection of books and DVDs for both adults and children, including Australian classics. (If you book with children we leave all the kids things in the cabana ready for you when you arrive, including the DVDs. The adult DVD collection we keep next door to avoid cluttering the space as most people on a short stay don't use them. Please ask to see this collection). If you need it there is air-conditioning, television, DVD player, free wi-fi and a small radio with ipod/MP3 port. Washing machine and line dry. First aid kit and a picnic set. We are lighthouse lovers and members of Lighthouses of Australia who would be happy to introduce you to our local icons, such as Bay Rock Lighthouse and the Maritime Museum (by ferry to Townsville). Year round you can hire a boat to visit the remote Cape Cleveland lighthouse and 50s era keepers cottages sitting on a clifftop overlooking the Coral Sea. The Sealink ferry also runs trips at times throughout the year. We are also the home of Hayler Heritage Card Models and Island Cabana tropical miniatures and would be pleased to introduce you to Magnetic Island’s tiny but perfect Museum. Guest AccessOur tropical garden is peaceful and cooling by day and really comes alive at night with many species of tropical birds, geckos, bats, possums, and our so-loved curlews. (Koalas and rock wallabies are down the road). The pool access directly adjoins the cabana and you don't share the pool with anyone. Interaction with GuestsWe like people so if we can help you with anything please ask. We can pick you up and drop you off at the ferry terminal with your luggage, no problem (kids car seats available). The NeighborhoodTropical island paradise, with nothing to do or everything to do. A good mix of resident locals and visitors. The island is also a safe place for older kids to roam in a way they can’t in the city. (There is a skate park so byo skateboards). Getting AroundIf you’re flying in to Townsville you’ll find the airport small and user friendly, with the coach to the ferry terminal inexpensive and there to meet your flight. A gorgeous twenty minute ferry ride across Cleveland Bay and we’ll pick you up at the island terminal. You can pack light as we supply most of what you’ll need for your stay. On the island you can hire a regular car or a fun car (eg mini moke or topless). Bringing your own car over on the barge? Plenty of on-site parking and level access. All day tickets available for the island bus which stops across the road. Other Things to NoteWe welcome sharing adults and families with children of all ages. Please don't book us if what you really want is the glamour of a five star island resort. We're not that kind of operation. This is Airbnb and you'll live very comfortably like a local. Magnetic Island has a dry tropical climate and is built on rugged granite which is mostly National Park . Many of the plants invoking a tropical feel (eg heliconias) rely on copious watering. Our garden has been established with natives and palms. Both our garden and the wildlife visiting it are subject to seasonal change. If the summer rains fail, as they did 2014-2015, the garden may be less abundant over the winter period and attract less wildlife. Like most parts of Australia we are subject to water rationing in times of drought. Commercial venues employ additional water to maintain that lush tropical look all year round. We're conservationists working on a domestic scale. The cabana side of the property has its own entrance and is very private but it is not completely isolated. You will have neighbours on two sides: us on one side and there is another property beyond our back fence. The accommodation is self-catering and easy walking distance to the supermarket, restaurants and cafes. Let us know if it's a special occasion (eg child's birthday) and you want to order a cake. We don't take bookings between November and February.

The SpaceThe deck is simply an amazing place to relax. Being up off the ground on the first floor, gives a sense of overlooking the area. I have never understood why, but it doesn't seem to matter whether it is blowing a gale on the Esplanade or almost no breeze at all on the Esplanade, we still get a gentle fresh breeze at the unit. Guest AccessThe swimming pool is for guest use only and is only to be used in accordance with the body corporate bylaws. Interaction with GuestsWe are available via mobile phone for any questions you may have during your stay. The NeighborhoodIt is only a short 200m stroll to the Esplanade where you can walk along the beach. Or you can take a fishing rod and fish from the rocks or the pontoon. Just around the corner is a small shopping centre complete with a Foodstore, Pharmacy, a liquor outlet and a cafe, so almost anything you could want during your holiday is conveniently located. Getting AroundThere is a bus stop right outside the front of the Magnetic Waves complex. The bus routes on Magnetic Island are excellent and will take you to/from Picnic Bay, Nelly Bay, Alma Bay and Horseshoe Bay. But if you prefer to bring your own car to the island, there is a full lock up garage on the ground floor of the unit. Other Things to NoteAlthough this apartment has 3 bedrooms, those bedrooms that are not required due to number of guests booked, will be locked off and linen not provided. This lowers laundering costs and further saves our environment. You will be asked about bedding configurations required at time of request.
