The SpaceThis is the space our family and friends use- not a commercial bed and breakfast. It's a flexible, self-contained, informal space geared to outdoor family living.
The 12 metre pool is long enough to swim laps, but also contains a large offset wading area at each end, ideal for little ones and learners. It is fully fenced to Australian safety standards and there is further perimeter fencing allowing you to close the cabana surrounds off from the main grounds so you can keep a close eye on the kids.
The main cooking area is outside with a good view of both the pool and the kids’ play area. There is an electric barbeque, induction hotplates and an oven, so you keep the house cool while you cook and the kids play in our benign climate. This adjoins an outdoor eating area. Inside is a family size fridge and a kitchenette for preparing breakfast or midnight snacks.
"Cabana" best describes the open plan holiday configuration. It is basically two large living rooms, each with glass sliding doors onto a poolside terrace; and one small bathroom with a toilet, shower and vanity. There is one double bedroom which adjoins one of the living areas. It can be screened for privacy through timber louvres and timber blinds, or you can leave it open so you can see through to the outdoor terrace and pool which is lit up at night. The second living area has a trundle bed configuration, meaning it is made up by day as a daybed and converts to two singles for sleeping. It's ideal for children as they have a second space to play indoors other than the main lounge. (The two beds are standard singles; one slides out under the other. That is, it doesn't convert to a double bed. Please note if you are 6 feet four you won't fit there too well. During the dry season we put up a magical children’s marquee in the garden which is a great place for quiet time.
Walk to the supermarket, bottle shop, restaurants, chemist and medical centre. Stroll to the beach and marina down the street and to the children’s park looking out over the tropical waters of Cleveland Bay. The island bus stops just across the road.
For a third or fourth child we have a daybed and a baby cot. We are in the process of restoring a vintage (1967) caravan which is set among the palm trees near the pool. This should be available from March 2017 for older children and/ or adults for a small additional cost.
We supply a high chair, stroller and quality toys and linens, including beach towels, beach and pool toys, snorkelling gear, bikes, scooters; and kid sized torches for those scary evening walks in our “jungle”. We have an intelligent selection of books and DVDs for both adults and children, including Australian classics. (If you book with children we leave all the kids things in the cabana ready for you when you arrive, including the DVDs. The adult DVD collection we keep next door to avoid cluttering the space as most people on a short stay don't use them. Please ask to see this collection).
If you need it there is air-conditioning, television, DVD player, free wi-fi and a small radio with ipod/MP3 port. Washing machine and line dry. First aid kit and a picnic set.
We are lighthouse lovers and members of Lighthouses of Australia who would be happy to introduce you to our local icons, such as Bay Rock Lighthouse and the Maritime Museum (by ferry to Townsville). Year round you can hire a boat to visit the remote Cape Cleveland lighthouse and 50s era keepers cottages sitting on a clifftop overlooking the Coral Sea. The Sealink ferry also runs trips at times throughout the year.
We are also the home of Hayler Heritage Card Models and Island Cabana tropical miniatures and would be pleased to introduce you to Magnetic Island’s tiny but perfect Museum. Guest AccessOur tropical garden is peaceful and cooling by day and really comes alive at night with many species of tropical birds, geckos, bats, possums, and our so-loved curlews. (Koalas and rock wallabies are down the road). The pool access directly adjoins the cabana and you don't share the pool with anyone. Interaction with GuestsWe like people so if we can help you with anything please ask. We can pick you up and drop you off at the ferry terminal with your luggage, no problem (kids car seats available). The NeighborhoodTropical island paradise, with nothing to do or everything to do. A good mix of resident locals and visitors. The island is also a safe place for older kids to roam in a way they can’t in the city. (There is a skate park so byo skateboards). Getting AroundIf you’re flying in to Townsville you’ll find the airport small and user friendly, with the coach to the ferry terminal inexpensive and there to meet your flight. A gorgeous twenty minute ferry ride across Cleveland Bay and we’ll pick you up at the island terminal. You can pack light as we supply most of what you’ll need for your stay. On the island you can hire a regular car or a fun car (eg mini moke or topless). Bringing your own car over on the barge? Plenty of on-site parking and level access. All day tickets available for the island bus which stops across the road. Other Things to NoteWe welcome sharing adults and families with children of all ages. Please don't book us if what you really want is the glamour of a five star island resort. We're not that kind of operation. This is Airbnb and you'll live very comfortably like a local.
Magnetic Island has a dry tropical climate and is built on rugged granite which is mostly National Park . Many of the plants invoking a tropical feel (eg heliconias) rely on copious watering. Our garden has been established with natives and palms. Both our garden and the wildlife visiting it are subject to seasonal change. If the summer rains fail, as they did 2014-2015, the garden may be less abundant over the winter period and attract less wildlife. Like most parts of Australia we are subject to water rationing in times of drought. Commercial venues employ additional water to maintain that lush tropical look all year round. We're conservationists working on a domestic scale.
The cabana side of the property has its own entrance and is very private but it is not completely isolated. You will have neighbours on two sides: us on one side and there is another property beyond our back fence.
The accommodation is self-catering and easy walking distance to the supermarket, restaurants and cafes. Let us know if it's a special occasion (eg child's birthday) and you want to order a cake.
We don't take bookings between November and February.
