Our spectacular and very popular Bruny Island is a longitudinal island about the size of Singapore in land mass. The permanent population is 770 good folk. It's made up of two bodies of land connected by a narrow isthmus called 'The Neck', The Neck is bordered by the Tasman Sea to the East and the D'Entrecasteux Channel on its west. The 'pyramid' dune as it has been affectionally named, has steps to the top overlooking the famed Adventure Bay in which all the explorations called in to replenish water, carry out scientific research and rest prior to continuing their journey up the east coast when the southerlies were in force. That's just one of the incredible places to visit whilst on island. The island is located in Tasmania’s southeast corner and is accessed by the ferry, Mirambeena. She departs from Kettering the tiny seaside village thirty five minutes south from Hobart. Drive into the appropriate lane and pay as you board, no previous booking is necessary. The relaxing journey takes about twenty minutes with visitors and locals alike enjoying the ride either remaining in their vehicles or communing with other passengers. You may even get lucky and catch the antics of playful dolphins riding her bow wave whilst your ride sets the tone for your island experience. We acknowledge the Alonnah-Lunawanna Nueononne People, the Traditional Owners of the land on which we live, are custodians and work to protect.

Prior to European settlement Bruny Island was the home of a small band of Aborignal people known as the Nuenonne. The famous Tasmanian woman Trugernanner - Truganini, daughter of Mangerner - Chief Mangana and leader of the band, died at the age of sixty four. Truganini was married to Wooreddy whom she met at the island mission conducted by George Agustus Robinson. The Nuenonne called Bruny Island Lunawannaalonna, today these names refer to two separate villages on the west coast of the island. Twenty years ago, Bruny Island was a sleepy little island with descendants of the first european settlers making up the community. Today the secret is well and truly out and the population has grown. Internet technology has brought into view the beauty and charm of this historical island where explorers made their first port of call. Visitors from the world over make their way here having read about its clean air, flora, abundance of wildlife, beautiful vistas, walks, delicious produce, friendly locals, long beaches and world class surf. Time just seems to fade when you arrive.
For your trip to Bruny Island you’ll require your car or a hired vehicle. Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Thrifty and are all available in Tasmania and at arrangements can be made at the airport. AVIS though available in Tasmania does not allow their vehicles to travel to Bruny Island. If you don’t intend to leave the estate, you may be collected at Hobart Airport for a helicopter direct to Labillardiere Estate or a fixed wing scenic plane ride to the island’s air strip, where we will provide transport to the property.

The SpaceThe southern end of Bruny Island is by far the best and Abel's Cabin is close to some of its best attractions. The island's only winery, the most southern one in Australia, is a short walk away. Apart from tasting their wines they have a bistro that is open all day for lunch. The wallaby and lamb burgers (known as wooly jumpers) are to die for. The reserve pinot is dangerously drinkable... The island's only hotel is 5km away at Alonnah (you pass it on the way). The fairly recent new owner, Dave, has done a magnificent job upgrading the hotel, especially the food. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Local fish, sometimes scallops in season, are fabulous. Friday night's Meat Raffle (be there by 5.30pm) is a great chance to meet an array of locals. $6/ticket and the proceeds go to a community fund that helps care for folks in need. Cloudy Bay and the lighthouse in the National Park make for lovely outings, both within a 30m drive through beautiful rural and forest countryside. A new cider factory with tastings is opening soon right nearby too. Cider is big business in Tasmania and this will be Bruny's first in a long time. There are gorgeous beaches to walk on and enjoy the seascapes and the views are to the west so the sunsets are often memorable, especially from the comfort of the Cabin. There's a lot to see and do, including a memorable 3hour boat trip (details in the cabin) at Adventure Bay, which is a 15 minute drive away. On the way a coffee at R-T Place just before the turn off is just the thing. Guest AccessYou have the run of Abel's Cabin and the mature gardens. We will supply a continental breakfast for the FIRST morning. Please tell us when you book if there are any dietary needs. There is a handy shop in Alonnah on the way from the ferry, just before the hotel, where bread, milk etc are available. Interaction with GuestsKim and Victoria live nearby and one of us is usually on the island. If you need information do not hesitate to call. We will make every endeavour to welcome you when you first arrive and we look forward to meeting you. The NeighborhoodMany years ago a Finnish man bought a big property fronting Cemetery Road and over the years he subdivided and sold it to Finnish friends who had settled in Tasmania. Abel's Cabin is right in Little Finland and in fact was owned by a Finnish woman and her husband until we bought it in mid-2015. We took out their sauna and renovated the bathroom, but the cabin remains like many of the Finnish homes nearby, timber throughout. Getting AroundYou need a car. There is no public transport on the island not even a taxi. We will send you the ferry timetables and other information by email when you book. The ferry leaves from Kettering, which is a 45 minute drive from Hobart. The crossing takes about 15 minutes. We are a lovely 45 minute drive through pastoral, bush, coastal and forest scenery. You have the oyster bar and cheese factory on the way to tempt you. Other Things to NoteIf you are staying for more than two days we will pop by to make sure the water tank is full and you have what you require. In the evenings there are little furry things that inhabit the garden. They are in no way dangerous if left alone. They include possums, wallabies and rabbits. They can be quite friendly, especially when helping themselves to the fruit trees and other tasty treats like the roses!

The SpaceThere are two guest cottages on the Hundred Acre Hideaway property both with outdoor hot tubs. This cottage #1 is a contemporary open plan living space with a deck and screens on two sides and the wood fired hot tub is sunken into the front deck looking out to the ocean. The other guest cottage is across the driveway and separated by gardens, lawns and privacy screening. The property is very quiet and set high on Mount Mangana with uninterrupted views across bushland and out to the Southern Ocean. My husband Phil and I live on the property in our own private cottage further up the driveway separated by a sculptural fence defining public and private areas. As guests at Hundred Acre Hideaway you have access to 90% of this amazing property. We will greet you with a warm Bruny Island welcome but give you total privacy and space to relax. Guest AccessYou have the entire cottage to use privately. 90% of the property is available for your enjoyment, including fields, walking tracks and a 4 hole golf course. We also have two beautiful thoroughbred horses and a huge array of wallabies, potaroos, paddymelons, wedge tail eagles, goshawks, robins, wrens and honeyeaters. Interaction with GuestsHundred Acre Hideaway is our home and we love sharing it with guests from all over the world. We will welcome you with a warm greeting and show you how to keep the wood fired hot tub warm all through the night. We live on the same property just up the hill and are available at all times by either pressing the access doorbell or calling our mobiles. I'm sure you're just ready to relax and enjoy the peace and privacy of this beautiful location...its all about romance and resting, soaking in the hot tub, looking at the stars at night... we get that you are here for privacy and we aim to provide you with a totally relaxing experience. The NeighborhoodHundred Acre Hideaway is on the South part of Bruny Island at Lunawanna on Mount Mangana. One of the most appealing aspects of this property is its private, quiet, remote location away form the hustle and bustle of the small townships yet still only a 5-20 minute drive form all major iconic attractions such as the lighthouse, the cruises, Cloudy Bay and the vineyard. Bruny Island Premium Wines is a fantastic place to go for lunch and it is a 5 minute drive down the road. Getting AroundThere is no public transport on Bruny Island so you will need to drive here by car. If you are renting a car we recommend Bargain Car rentals. If you are arriving from Hobart Airport it will be a 20 minute drive to Hobart then a 45 minute drive to Kettering where the ferries are located. Both ferries are vehicular vessels meaning you will drive onto the ferry after paying the fare at the ticket booth from inside your vehicle. The ferry crosses the D'Entrecasteaux channel (15 minutes) then you will drive off the ferry onto Bruny Island. It's a 45km drive south to Hundred Acre Hideaway- this will take 50 minutes non stop or a few hours if you explore the gourmet stores and scenery along the way. In other words it will take you at least two hours to reach the property from Hobart. A 4WD is a very good idea however its still possible to access most areas of the island in a 2WD. To access the rugged coastline we recommend booking the 3 hour high speed eco cruise at Bruny Island Cruises. To access remote forests and beaches we recommend booking a 4WD adventure with Bruny 4x4 Forest to Coast Adventures. There is one petrol outlet on the island which is located at Adventure Bay. Other Things to NoteIt's a good idea to plan ahead for evening meals. During peak season (summer) the Vineyard (5 minutes down the road) is open for dinner on Saturday and Sunday nights. The Hotel Bruny (15 minutes down the road) is open every night for dinner. The rest of the year the only place open for dinner on the island is the Hotel Bruny and booking ahead is recommended. If you prefer you can pre-order a dinner hamper through us, we need 48 hours notice and we can provide you with Bruny Island lamb, beetroot and fetta salad, dinner rolls and dessert. $50 for two people. There are two general stores on the island where you can buy general meats and a small selection of fruit and vegetables. If you're arriving late we strongly recommend shopping in Hobart for meat and vegetables during your stay. During your stay on Bruny Island you can then explore the gourmet outlets such as the oyster bar, whiskey house, fudge shop, cheese co, berry farm, vineyard and hotel for island produce.

The SpaceIf you have come to relax and get away from it all, then this is the place for you. Sit in the Poang chair and take in the magnificent views, read a book, or play a game from the classics provided. Fish from the jetty, swim at the child friendly beach or simply collect shells from Shell Beach in front of the property. it is a good idea to plan your day if you wish to take in the highlights of Bruny. I have a folder at the Boathouse which details many of these highlights, with relevant information. Guest AccessThe guests will have access to the whole property. A verandah encompasses the front and northern side of the property and steps lead down to the front of the property and waterfront area. Interaction with GuestsI am a phone call away ..(PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) .if there are any problems I can be contacted at any time..or if there are any queries about Bruny island in general. The NeighborhoodThe Boathouse is situated on the waterfront at Alonnah. There is a safe swimming beach for children. Throw a fishing line off the jetty out in front. There are several walks of varying length that can be taken from the property. History abounds in every nook and cranny of Bruny Island, including the pontoon in front of the property which has part of the old Tasmanian floating bridge on its end. The History Room is next to the Police station down the road. Getting AroundThe Bruny Island Hotel is walking distance south of the property and is open for meals daily. There is a small shop opposite the pub which sells essential items. Travel south to Lunawanna, further to the Cape Bruny Lighthouse, over to Adventure Bay and north to Dennes Point. We are in the middle of Bruny island in terms of accessing all the main tourist areas. Other Things to NoteThe Bruny Boathouse is exactly 30 minutes to the ferry at Roberts Point. Depending on the time of day, guests need to leave enough time to return to the ferry they wish to catch. The 9.30am ferry leaving Kettering to come across to Bruny is the busiest and three quarters an hour before departure is the recommended time to arrive at Kettering. The 4.30 ferry return is likewise the busiest return journey ferry. It costs $30 return for the ferry crossing. The ferry runs a shuttle run if it appears as if it is going to be very busy.

Shops are located at Dennes Point (limited range of goods), Alonnah (better range) and Adventure Bay (quite a good range). The studio has a refrigerator, S/S sink and microwave oven but no cooktop or convection oven, however the BBQ adjacent to studio (shown in photos) has a hood and wok burner, we can provide all cooking utensils. Continental breakfast is provided. There is no cable internet on Bruny, internet access on the island is only available via satellite or mobile broadband via Telstra or Optus network. We have Optus mobile broadband which we can provide limited access to, however we cannot provide unrestricted access because of the very high cost of mobile broadband data. If you have a mobile phone which uses either Telstra or Optus network and the phone is data enabled then you will have internet available at our location. Optus performs better than Telstra at our location.
