Outdoors: The Diggers Store Bed and Breakfast offers a relaxing country-side experience. The property boasts a small fruit tree orchard, a kitchen garden, rose bushes galore, a 60 year old grapevine canopy, and a wee brood of hens. - A Brief History - The Diggers’ Store store was established in Campbells Creek in 1857. Today it remains a well-known heritage icon in Castlemaine and the surrounding area. A gentleman named William Wood was granted the land in order to set up a gold-mining supplies store to fulfill the needs of the growing town. (Hence the name The Diggers Store!) Gold had been discovered in the area in 1851 and within two years more than five thousand miners were living in a shanty-town that stretched along the Creek. The stable, once housing Mr. Wood’s horses and hay, was carefully and respectfully converted in to a two-story dwelling in the early 1990s in order to set it up as a bed and breakfast. Alex and Tina re-opened The Diggers Store B&B in late 2013. Alex grew up on the property where his parents once ran an antiques store, a devonshire tea house, and ran the B&B. Alex and Tina have also set up an all-analogue recording studio on the property, Sound Recordings, they run a pop-up art space, record store, and coffee shop in the original diggers store, and they recently opened up their property for private functions and creative projects. Guest AccessFacilities & Activities: Wireless internet Air Conditioner - cooling and heating Full kitchen facilities Full breakfast provisions available on request Gas BBQ Tea and coffee Record player and selection of records A selection of board games A selection of books Off-street parking Portacot Open fireplace and gas heater Fans Outdoor furniture Iron and ironing board available on request Netflix Interaction with GuestsAlex, Tina, and Odetta live in a separate house at the front of the property. They will meet and greet you when you arrive, show you around the place, and then leave you to it. The Diggers Store B&B and property are there for you to enjoy. The SpaceThe Little Cottage at Faraday is part of the historic Faraday School-House property. From (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN), the place was humming with school children. Since the 1990s, the property has been privately owned. The Little Cottage is one of three separate buildings on the property. It has a fully-equipped kitchen, living room, bedroom with double bed and an en-suite bathroom/WC. The garden is lovely in Spring. A 600-year-old Eucalypt (River Redgum) overhangs the meandering creek. Across the road, the old pine plantation is a reminder of a time when school children and their parents planted a forest for the future. In winter, it's a shady place with the smell of pine resin permeating the air. In Spring, the various bulbs are in flower... Guests are welcome to wander through the school-house garden and the pines, over the road. The cottage, whilst simple, contains almost everything for people who want to escape the hectic city lights. There is a DVD player but sorry, no television reception. Personal computers seem to work well. The kitchen requisites include a gas oven and hot plates, microwave oven, toaster/kettle, coffee plunger - and all the equipment you'll need to cook your own meals. There in an electric radiant heater in the building which provides effective and cosy warmth. Bring your books, your sewing, your food and wine - and your bicycle. There are lovely places to ride your bike. If you are a hiker, Mount Alexander is not far. The 180 degree view from the granite rocks at the summit is an unusual and lovely place to share a picnic. Morning coffee places are plentiful in Castlemaine. The old Theatre Royal is a great old cinema, showing interesting (and sometimes unusual) films. Castlemaine is a very 'arty' town with many galleries and exhibition locations. Bendigo is approximately 35 kilometres away. There are more attractions there than I have room to write about however I do recommend the art gallery. It's an exceptional place to wander. Guest AccessThe land on which the Little Cottage stands - and the old pine plantation over the road - combine to provide five acres of gently undulating garden. The gardens are at their best in Spring and Autumn. In winter, the fragrance of the pine trees is lovely as you wander through the old trees. Interaction with GuestsWith advance notice, guests can enjoy a meal with the host (additional cost)... Perhaps a barbecue under the school-house pergola, Spaghetti Bolognaise with salad and crusty bread - or Red Wine Beef (a Greek casserole classic)... and BYO white or red wine... Lovely! The NeighborhoodFaraday is a small community (only 150 people) located 12kms from Castlemaine. The Faraday School-House, the Stone Building and the Little Cottage are overlooked by Mount Alexander - nine kilometres distant. Sitting on Mount Alexander on a huge rock, you can see a panorama of country-side. Cycling is extremely popular for both serious and occasional bike riders. The Castlemaine Botanical Gardens are a beautiful place to picnic with a lovely childrens' playground. Take a walk around the gardens. At the rear of the gardens is the Castlemaine pool - a lovely outdoors setting, very popular with the locals, so it must be good! There are more wineries than you can count - and the makers love people visiting - to taste wine - and take some bottles home! Walk and explore - the many walking tracks which wind through the native forests of Mount Alexander. If you enjoy a serious coffee, Castlemaine has heaps of small eateries, cafes and pubs. Food prices range from fairly low cost - to more expensive cuisine. Please ask the host for her recommendations. Approximately 2km from the property is the Expedition Pass reservoir, a popular swimming place in the summer. The Theatre Royal in Castlemaine shows avante films - and you can dine or wine, whilst you watch a film. Just a coach ride away from the bustle of the goldfields Claremont remembers a gentler time from two centuries ago. Breakfast on the upstairs deck while you wonder if you really heard the soft neighing of ghostly horses who kept you company Claremont Coach House is exactly what it says, an eighteen seventies coach house and stables but nicely restored as a double storied cottage for guests who want to step back into Australian history. Private and unique it has the charm of its many years, but reasonably modern facilities. (Well last century perhaps.) Wander through the spacious grounds of the stately home. Then try and decide whether to drift through your day, with maybe a gentle walk to and through the nearby Botanic Gardens, or muster the energy to make an expedition into Castlemaine, or the countrside. The old goldfields town is bustling again these days with the new gold of tourism. The stylish cafes, restaurants and pubs vie for your trade, but somehow a little more gently than Melbourne. Visit a mine, or a ruin, climb a mountain (Mt Alexander is the most gentle of mountains), ride a horse, or a bike. There are some wonderful walks on the Great Dividing Trail, often along the line of the old irrigation system, a quaint surprise that winds its way through central Victoria. Take the kids on the easy walks and make sure you have a picnic. Then again if you are a pioneer, exhaust yourself on the mountain trails and good luck to you. Maldon, Bendigo, Daylesford, or Ballarat are just a four-in-hand coach ride away if you want to be really adventurous. It might be easier to take the train, (steam train to Maldon), or even your car. But make sure you are back in time for a quiet 19th century evening at Claremont Coach House where time moves graciously and mysteriously. Historic, they don't build coach houses anymore. Private, set in the grounds of my wife's stately home, Claremont. Natural, you are in a garden, in the country and in the bush. Relaxed, time moves more slowly here. Adventure, there are a host of activities nearby.

The Potager is an historic 1870's sandstone cottage in the heart of the central victorian goldfields. Added to and restored over the years the cottage revolves around a superb living area with exposed stone walls, huge open fireplace, slate floors, floor to ceiling glass doors that open out onto a terrace and a 20m swimming pool beyond which lies The Potager Garden. The garden was originally laid out in a semi formal design with stone walls, winding paths and raised beds full of roses, herbs and perrenials. The whole rich and fragrant tapestry is lined on each side by espaliered apple and pear trees. Situated alongside Forrest Creek which was one of the richest alluvial goldfields in the 1850's, the valley exudes an atmosphere of peace and tranquility with lots of walking trails and an abundance of wallabies, kangaroos and colourful rosellas, parrots and little bush birds The Potager is an ideal spot for a weekend of adventure or a cosy retreat for reflection and for reviving jaded spirits. The Potager is nestled beside the historic Forrest Creek where 1850's Goldrush began. This 1870's sandstone cottage is set on 4 acres with a swimming pool and potager garden, a place to sit and reflect or enjoy with the company of friends and family.

A Brief History -The Diggers' Store store was established in Campbells Creek in 1857. Today it remains a well-known heritage icon in Castlemaine and the surrounding area.A gentleman named William Wood was granted the land in order to set up a gold-mining supplies store to fulfill the needs of the growing town. (Hence the name The Diggers Store!) Gold had been discovered in the area in 1851 and within two years (phone number hidden) miners were living in a shanty-town that stretched along the Creek. The stable, once housing Mr. Wood's horses and hay, was carefully and respectfully converted in to a two-story dwelling in the early 1990s in order to set it up as a bed and breakfast. The SpaceSet in a peaceful neighbourhood away from traffic noise and bright lights, the house is welcoming, well insulated, with an edible garden in active development (though in Summer not much produce!). Our kitchen is spacious and well equipped, if a little in need of an overhaul. The bathroom is old fashioned but has a great shower (over bath) and is clean and well equipped. The toilet is separate. Kings of the Castle offers you the largest of our three bedrooms, with the best views, exposed floor boards and a double bed with futon and slats. The house and garden is totally smoke free and we have no pets or pests (that we are aware of!). We are on a huge block so lots of outdoor space to enjoy year round. We like to meet travelers from near and far. Artists / musicians especially welcome. We provide a small selection of organic breakfast supplies, or there are plenty of nearby cafes. We are meat eaters but welcome people with diverse eating habits (just tell us if you don't like meat around while you are here, or if you have specific dietary needs for breakfast). Feel free to ask any questions. We think you'll like it here, and we welcome ideas for improvement. Looking forward to meeting you!
