The SpaceThis Coastal Road, Southern Lagoon, "Manatee" area of Belize is well "off the beaten path". Gales Point Village is a remote, fishing & subsistence farming village. It was settled by escaped slaves in the 1780, and it has not changed much since then. The village is famous as a drumming center, and you will find expert "Sambai" and "Djimbe" drummers, dancers, and skilled crafts people. You can take drumming lessons, learn to make your own drum from a hollow tree, or partake in fireside drumming ceremony.
This location is one of the world's premier TARPON FISHING locations. Guides are available. Guest AccessYou may arrive by boat or vehicle. You will have full use of the entire house, patio, and its dock/ pier. You can get the house key from the on-site watchman. Hennings Point is a private peninsula, and the Wineberry House is one of four private homes on this 10-acre gated peninsula at the base of the much-larger Gales Point Peninsula. Interaction with GuestsEither the owner, Mark, the watchman, or one of Mark's employees will be available, in the general vicinity, should you need help or advice. Phone numbers of important contacts are in the house. The NeighborhoodThe Gales Point, Southern Lagoon area is a wild and pristine estuary on Belize's coast. This vast estuary is an IUCN Category IV Wildlife Sanctuary (the same designation as the Galápagos Archipelago). It is an important nesting ground for the rare Hawksbill and other sea turtles, and is home to the largest wild population of West Indian Manatee in Central or North America. There is little development in the area and sparse human population, and it is surrounded by thousands of hectares of natural lands with wild abundance of flora and fauna. In the village, there are several charming "cool spots", or restaurant/ bars. Getting AroundThere is no public transportation nor buses serving this area. You will need a sturdy, reliable rental vehicle, preferably an SUV or light pickup truck with high clearance. The Coastal Road reaching us is an unpaved gravel road with few habitations and no services ~ but spectacular scenery. Our favorite vehicle rental agency is Crystal Auto Rental at the airport.
In the village there are licensed fishing and tour guides, as well as skilled boatmen who can take you and your family out into the Caribbean for a memorable snorkeling adventure and island picnic. You may enjoy hiring a boatman to show you the incredible jungle rivers feeding this important estuary and its wild habitat.
Let us know if you wish to hire a cook or a guide for your stay, or take local drumming lessons. Other Things to NotePlease remember, this is a very remote coastal location, on an unpaved road. In the village you will find a very basic store at "Martha's Store", and a simple restaurant/ bar at "Gentle's Cool Spot". The closest grocery store, gas station, proper restaurant, and hospital is 20 miles south in Dangriga.
Before leaving Belize City, be sure to purchase enough groceries to feed you during your stay. There are grocery stores near the airport.
