Morro Pintado is a fishing village belonging to the municipality of Areia Branca, a small port. A paved road leading to Ponta do Mel spurs East from the federal highway, connecting Mossoro with Areia Branca. The village is reached via a graded country road about 1 mile from the asphalt. Local residents are fishermen and subsistance farmers. Wealthier folks from the nearby city of Mossoro have built a string of weekend houses on the bluff (morro) overlooking the beach. The coast is locally known as "Costa Verde" (green coast), owing to the abundance of a green saltbrush along the surfline. The beach is open, sandy and stretches for miles in both directions. To the West, one can walk or drive to the village of Baixa Grande, where another paved road begins, leading into Areia Branca. To the East lie the fishing villages of Cristovel and Redonda. Further along the coast is the small town of Ponta do Mel. From Ponta do Mel, the paved road has been extended along the coast to Porto do Mange and eventually connects to the main highway from Natal, the state capital. The environs are planted with Cashews, but with some assistance, many other tropical fruit will flourish, especially Tamarind and Coconuts.

The apartment is right on the seafront of Ponta do Mel, an unspoilt fishing village that made it into the top 10 'undiscovered' beaches list on Brazilian TV. It was a bar when I bought it, since then I've added another floor for myself to live in, and have improved the original house. It's now basic but comfortable, with an enormous terrace for relaxing in, or checking your emails. The village is still off the tourist trail, so is very friendly and natural. The beach is usually deserted, and it,s a safe place to wander around, as violent crime is virtually unheard of. There are plenty of small shops, and even a couple of restaurants within a few minutes walk of the apartment. At the weekend there is usually live music on somewhere. For an authentic North East Brazil experience there is nowhere better.
