A perfect getaway for nature loving folks like me who desire a tranquil setting to refresh and rejuvenate. Thank you for all your thoughtful touches, the wooly socks, the candles, your homemade muffins, etc. What a treat! I love the celebration of local artists, shopping from the convenience of ones accommodation has been a delightful experience. This has been a wonderful weekend away from the hustle and bustle of my real life. I will not hesitate to call you and stay again" Victoria, BC “Suzanne, we have been so pleasantly surprised by the remoteness and silence (except for the lovely birds chirping) of the cabin. It provides for restful sleep on the luxurious bed (so soft and plush) in the upstairs alcove. We also enjoyed having a kitchen and a washer and dryer. It’s a great home away from home. Also, the pictures posted on your website really do it justice, which is unusual. Thank you for your hospitality. Miami, Florida "We found a paradise on Lake Trail Road and a warm hospitality in this perfect place. Thank you Suzanne for everything and of course for the fresh apple juice and the dried apples. We will always remember our week at Applewood Cottage and hope to be back sometime soon.” St. Monty, Switzerland “Thank you!! What a glorious stay we have had here...even with 2 little children (”Oh Mom, I so so so love our new house!”) They were flabbergasted to see the outdoor shower! I loved the funky little touches everywhere and the attention to detail. Very luxurious. Loved listening to the samples of local music as well. Just an enchanting time!” Edmonton, Ab "A wee bit of paradise! This was the best holiday we’ve had yet! Sitting at the back in the growing darkness and stillness...the outdoor shower...the seclusion and quiet...a piano to sit down to 20 times a day...and yet close to the rest of the world. Thanks for sharing this part of Eden with us!" Calgary,Ab “For those who think they have to go thousands of miles to find some place special, don’t know of Applewood Cottage! Secluded and peaceful, spotlessly clean, warm and cosy and all of this close to home. What more could a person want?! Definitely a place to come back to again and again!” Saanichton, BC “The cottage was just what we were looking for. A wonderfully quiet and secluded place to relax and enjoy birdsong and to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Thanks for making that possible and thanks for the delicious apple juice and muffins.” Munich, Germany “We are two Winnipeg journalists who found your lovely cottage on the internet...what a lovely, comfortable, charming place to stay! We’ve skied, hiked, kayaked, and golfed, and I think the Valley is paradise...especially in February! Thanks so much for the great breakfasts and the coffee...a memorable holiday.” Winnipeg, Mba “This place is amazing! Best birthday present ever! Your attention to detail is incredible...tea, scrabble, piano, music, chopin recordings, bathrobes...we loved our stay and will be back for sure! You’re amazing... thanks for this place.” Victoria, BC “This place was everything it promised and more...peace, cosy, relaxing. Such a cute little cottage!” Dusseldorf, Germany “This was one of the most relaxing experiences I’ve had in awhile...and we were trying to shop for our wedding so that says a lot about the tranquility of Applewood! It is so beautiful, clean and peaceful. We will be using Applewood Cottage from now on when we stay in Courtenay...we are happy it is available in the winter too! Thanks again!" Port McNeill, BC “Lovely cabin...we really enjoyed our stay and had a merry xmas here! Fantastic selection of books!” Wells, BC

The SpaceDestination: CUMBERLAND! Staying at the Singing Chef's Cottage for a holiday getaway is a great idea. Cumberland is an interesting and action packed village nestled in the Beaufort Range. Close to hiking, lake swimming, bike trails and ocean kayaking, you can plan exciting day trips from my house and spend time enjoying the artsy village life. We have it all! Great shopping, culture, four star dining, hot nightlife...why go anywhere else? My home is a classic Cumberland home with a simple charm. Come up the front steps or wheel up the ramp, this house is accessible for small wheelchairs or walkers. The cosy living room contains the wood stove and many musical instruments. Windows look out to the flower gardens in the front. Guests rooms are located in the dormer style rooms upstairs. The ceiling is only 6 feet- so beware, very tall guests- you may need to stoop a little! The larger room has a comfy reading chair and a double bed. The smaller room has a single mattress and another comfy chair. There is also a single futon in the larger room. A family of four can stay comfortably. A double futon bed in the living room (semi private) is another option. In the summer there is room for tenting in the garden or on the cot under the grape arbour. Challenged with stairs? The downstairs is wheelchair accessible and a bed can be set up in the library/music room. Guest AccessThe large (heated tiled floor tiled floor) bathroom is outfitted with a long claw foot bathtub, and a spacious shower stall with two shower heads for tandem showers. The dining room is the heart of the house where there is a piano. The table sits six comfortably. From the dining room the back deck leads to the garden where the fire pit is a nice place to be in the evening. The back deck is a lovely spot in the morning to have breakfast. Guests are welcome to use the whole house except for the private rooms of your host. The kitchen has limited access; simple meals may be prepared by guests depending on the length of your stay but mostly Joanna will be providing the meals. (See Breakfast menu below in 'Other Things to Note' Dinners must be requested prior to your arrival. I will prepare meals keeping in mind any food allergies or preferences. Ask to see the menu and price list when you book!) The living room, dining room, back deck, bathroom and guest rooms are all free for your use. If you are musical you are invited to play the piano or any of the instruments in the living room. We love to jam. The garden is happy to have you putter in it (if you find weeding and watering therapeutic- gardeners are always appreciated!) and you are welcome to sit anywhere in the garden to read or relax. At times the entire house will be available to rent by the week or month. Please enquire with a few weeks notice. Interaction with GuestsWe enjoy our privacy and respect yours. We are here to make your stay comfortable and to give you information and as you request it. Continue along till you get to Dunsmuir, the main street. Turn RIGHT and go up one block to Third. Turn LEFT on Third at "The Wandering Moose" cafe. Drive up two blocks to Allen. I'm at 2739 Allen Ave. The SE corner of Third and Allen. Coming from North Island; come off the highway at the Cumberland exit and turn RIGHT into Cumberland. Follow the directions above. Coming from Courtenay or The Old Island Highway. Come up the connector straight into Cumberland following signs. Other Things to NoteMY LIFE as an ARTIST! Welcome to the farmhouse! Your hosts describe life on this 26 acre farm as living in a calendar. It is a scenic, relaxing location that has left many a guest coming back for more. This 1930's farmhouse has been renovated to reflect the full beauty of this rustic home and decorated in a breezy french farmhouse manor. This 3 bedroom, 1000 square foot, art filled home is light and airy with comfortable furniture to encourage laughter and conversation. This fully separate home is yours to enjoy. The chef's kitchen is ready for you to take on your culinary experiments as you bring home tasty locally grown treats to experiment with complete with everything you might need including a convection oven and dishwasher. The bookshelves are filled with books and games making sure you have plenty of ways to entertain yourself and unwind or play Bocce outside on the vast lawns. From here you can explore the whole valley and all the foodie, outdoor or beach delights it has to offer. It is a central yet rural location not so far from city amenities without having to be stuck in a city in the heart of the Comox Valley. You are a mere 950 meters from Kitty Coleman Beach and Provincial Park, a beautiful walk down the road to this scenic water location, 20 minute bike ride from Seal Bay Park or a quick drive to Miracle Beach. Or stay on the farm, walk to the creek and sit on a bench under the old maple tree, visit with the donkeys or perhaps the lavender gardens for some "aromatherapy". This place has it all for you! Your hosts are onsite in a second home with a field and barn separating you. They are there if you need them but have lots of privacy. The impressive 26 acres neighbors Kitty Coleman Gardens and is a short walk (950 meters) from Kitty Coleman Provincial Park and Beach, which has it's own boat launch. The eastern portion of the park is home to a single majestic old-growth Douglas fir, estimated to be more than 500 years old. From there you can see Bald Eagles, whales, seals, seal lions and, sometimes Dals porpoises. This is quite a popular spot for salmon fishing. In Jan and Feb, you can hear the sea lions from the farm as they wait for their delicious feast of salmon returning to the sea from Kitty Coleman Creek. From here you are also a 10 minute, flat, bike ride to Seal Bay Park, a treasure in the valley. The K'Ăłmoks Band named it Xwee Xwby Luq or “place of serenity and beauty.â€? The Island provides several beaches on the Georgia Straight to visit, such as Miracle Beach, a beautiful sand beach that stretches for miles, just a hop, skip and a jump away. This mid island location is perfect for day trips to the many unique communities on the Islands North Coast. Given that the Comox Valley boasts the longest growing season in Canada, there are many farms and vineyards to visit on this side of the valley and the farmers market is on every week all year long. If you are really keen, take a bike and do a farm tour or a vineyard tour as there are several near by (eating local has never been more fun). Or get to know some of the local artists who make this valley their home. Maybe a day trip to some of the smaller islands is up your alley, well the Denman Island ferry awaits your whims. This location gives you lots of flexibility knowing you will have a peaceful, star filled sky to come home to at the end of the day. Because BC is home to over 187 species of butterflies, more than any other province in Canada, and with all the fertile soils and committed gardeners, you are sure to see your share all you need to do is sit still. May we suggest you take a break and sit with the lavender in the botanical garden on the property? Perhaps you are more of a homebody? Take a walk through the pasture to the 9 acres of rain forest and sit beneath the maples and listen to the mountain fed creek. Next wander over to the gardens and pick some berries when in season, walk past the barn and say hi to the donkeys on your way back to your private farmhouse. Sit yourself down under the cherry tree and listen the crickets in August. It couldn't be more relaxing.

The largest island on the western side of North America, Vancouver Island has an extremely diverse topography ranging from lush rainforest valleys and snow-capped peaks to rugged, rocky coastlines and smooth, sandy beaches. It's this diversity that gives such distinct flavors to the various regions and the communities that comprise them. The southern tip of the island is comprised of Greater Victoria, the Saanich Peninsula and the Western Communities. Much of Victoria itself can be characterized as a modern heritage city with turn-of-the century buildings standing alongside condo high-rises. And with its ancient oak forests, cherry blossom-lined streets and warm, windswept weather, it's no surprise that Victoria is consistently ranked one of the most beautiful cities worldwide. Only a short drive from the city centre, the Saanich Peninsula is a cradle of agriculture with quaint communities and calm, inland beaches, while the more rugged Western Communities are a cluster of booming townships on the island's more rugged and forested Pacific Coast. Only an hour's drive up island, the Cowichan Valley enjoys a unique micro-climate, evident in the area's proliferation of vineyards, orchards and dairy farms. Small communities such as Cobble Hill, Duncan, Cowichan Bay, Cowichan Lake and Chemainus breathe a unique mix of small-town flavor and aboriginal charm into the region. Further north, the mid-island city of Nanaimo is a quaint tribute to Vancouver Island's oceanic history. With fabulous restaurants, bountiful shopping and numerous outdoor activities at your fingertips, it's clear why this is a growing, prospering community. Just minutes from Nanaimo are the coastal communities of Parksville and Qualicum beach. Parksville boasts the best beach in the world at Rathtrevor Park, it has to be seen to be believed. At low tide the ocean retreats more than 2km our exposing white sand for as far as the eye can see in every direction. One hour further north, the Comox Valley is not only home to the communities of Courtney and Comox but also the island's alpine sports destination: Mt. Washington boasts 60 runs, a high-speed quad chair, a fixed-grip quad (among other lifts) and a vertical drop of over 500 meters. It's easy to see why visitors from the world over make this their skiing destination. Like your recreation a little warmer and wetter? Take a detour to the island's west Pacific Coast and experience the awesome, wave-crashing majesty of Long Beach, the surfer mecca that stretches between the towns of Ucluelet and Tofino. Simply put? If you haven't experienced Vancouver Island, you haven't really experienced British Columbia. Vancouver Island is located off of the west side of Canada and is easily accessible by plane, boat and car. In order to drive to the island from Vancouver you must use the BC Ferries system so please check the schedule before departing. Victoria has a large International Airport that has daily flights to and from Seattle and Vancouver as well as many other destinations. The east side of the island is accessible by car, bus and train. Most of the west side of the island is best accessed by 4x4 as most of the roads are very rugged and much of this part of the island is true wilderness. Please make sure you let someone know where you are going and when you are returning if you intend to head into the back country. I am happy to answer any questions and tell you about this wonderful valley. We have a dog in the home as well. Our kids are generally easy going and happy but there are sometimes tears around dinner & bed. We try to minimize our noise when guests stay with us but you will definitely here us now and then and mornings can start as early as 7am :) We have kept our price low because of this "young family" aspect. You are welcome to use the kitchen as long as you are happy to work around us if we are preparing meals at the same time. The NeighborhoodWe live in the countryside 10 minutes North of Courtenay but have the great fortune of living on a loop road with 5 acre properties so there is a wonderful community of people. Many people walk "the loop" which is 2.5km throughout the day and stop and chat along the way. We also have access to the private land behind us which you are welcome to walk or cycle on. There are trails leading to a number of beaches. Getting AroundThere is no transit in this area so our home is best suited to travellers with a car. Other Things to NoteWe do our best to keep things neat and tidy but we have young kids, a dog and are starting a farm from scratch so things can get a little messy from time to time. The bedroom, your living room and 2 bathrooms are cleaned thoroughly and are tidy for your stay. You have your own semi-private living room & dining room with views out across the blueberry field. We occasionally have to pass through this room to get to the laundry but we limit this as much as possible during your stay. There is a small two piece bathroom next to your bedroom but the main bathroom with shower is upstairs.

The SpaceThis spacious, thoughtfully furnished one-bedroom suite is located in the true heart of Cumberland, BC. The Cottage is on Dunsmuir Avenue, the main street downtown. Though the area is lively and busy in the daytime (by country standards) it is absolutely quiet and peaceful in the evenings. Cumberland's a sleepy little Village that holds old-fashioned traditions dear. Most shops are closed on Sundays and Mondays and locals are friendly and generous with their stories and directions to their favourite bike trails, beaches and watering holes. After 5:30pm the downtown area gets very quiet as everyone heads home or out on their bikes. Situated only a block from the Cumberland Brewing Company and two blocks from the Waverley Hotel. These two businesses make up the heart of this quirky little village lovingly nicknamed Dodge City because of it's rough & tumble past and eccentric locals. House: The suite occupies the entire front section of a miner's cabin (originally built sometime between 1909 and 1918) by the stone mason who carved Ginger Goodwin's headstone Vincenzo Picketti. The cottage has been updated to suit travellers looking for a clean and comfortable place to rest after a day of exploring and mountain biking. The suite features a bedroom with comfortable organic top queen mattress. There is ample storage space for bikes and helmets and full laundry. The washer and dryer are available for free to guests, up to 1 wash/dry per day of stay. Kitchen is fully equipped with all the essentials: including a full size range, a small Euro-style bar fridge and everything you might need for meal preparation. There's a cooler on the patio if you need more space for keeping beer cold! The dining room leads out into a private, fenced yard and garden complete with picnic table, adirondack chairs in the shade and a hammock. We've done a fair bit of traveling ourselves and are always adding little things to the cottage that we would have appreciated on previous trips: maps, guidebooks, postcards, a corkscrew, hairdryer, etc. -- don't worry if you forgot something! If it's not already in the cottage, just ask. Guest AccessEverything inside the cottage, attached fully fenced private yard & garden, and two loaner bikes with helmets and locks (ask us first to get set up!) for cycling around town or out to nearby Comox Lake. We also have a space to lock up mountain bikes. Interaction with GuestsWe live in a nearby cottage and are here if you have any questions. We do not interact very much with our guests. We are always available by phone or text if you need, and we live and work very close by, but generally we leave you to your holiday in peace! Of course, if you WANT to meet us, we're happy to come say hello! Or if you need someone to guide you home from a night spent revelling in the great music and hospitality at the nearby Waverley Hotel, we can come to your rescue. The NeighborhoodIf you don't mind getting your feet dirty, it's a great area for walks, hiking and mountain biking. The cottage is two blocks from the massive trail networks within the Cumberland Community Forest. And in under 30 minutes, you can walk to a lookout in the forest and see 360 degree views of the area, including the Comox Glacier and on most clear days see over the Salish Sea to the Mainland and the beautiful snowy peaks of the Coast Mountains. Cumberland is a small town with the main street only stretching 5 blocks! People really look out for each other here, kids play in the forest, everyone rides bikes everywhere - it's a friendly place. Our little pocket of Cumberland is a very safe, commercial area within walking distance to many attractions. We are located on the main street downtown, just one block south of all the shops. Within a 3 minute walk, you can get to some of the Comox Valley's best restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. Cumberland's funky downtown core of boutique businesses offers everything from a local-food-centric grocery store to artisan chocolates to handcrafted jewellery and gifts, a full service grocery shop, liquor store, library, flower shop, bike shop and two great pubs, a playground and water park, vintage & consignment clothing store, book store, and even a micro-brewery complete with a giant patio. The Crooked Cottage has a convenient downtown location for exploring the Village, the tranquil mountain side setting, local trails and businesses. Getting AroundWe are less than a block from the nearest transit stop and biking distance to the nearby Comox Lake and all the downtown shops and restaurants. The property is less than a 10 min drive to downtown Courtenay and 20 minutes to the Comox Airport. One hour north of the BC Ferries Nanaimo Departure Bay port, three hours north of downtown Victoria and three hours away from the incredible beauty and surf of the Island's "westest" coast paradise towns of Tofino and Ucluelet. Other Things to NoteWe have furnished the apartment with a mix of brand new and antique & vintage furniture. Every care has been taken to ensure that the suite is kept to the highest of standards for cleanliness and comfort. The whole house is spotlessly clean, and there are clean linens and towels ready for you. High-speed wireless Internet is included. Free parking can be found on the street, always within a block of the house. There are no parking restrictions to parking in Cumberland. Check-in is after 3pm and check-out is 12pm. PLEASE NOTE: 1. Cleaning fee: $15 per visit, $25 per week for longer rentals. 2. No smoking. 3. Limit of 4 guests at a time on the property, including yourself.

The SpaceRipple Farm is located 15KM north of Courtenay (about a 15-20 min drive.) The drive up to Mt. Washington is about 15-20 minutes. The farm house is within easy biking & walking distance to great swimming holes on the Tsolum River. Amazing hiking, mountain biking, beach picnics and nature adventures await you and many of these are a short drive away. Guest AccessThis is a full home rental: guests will be welcome to cook their own meals in the kitchen, use the common gathering places in the house (living room, dining room) and will have access to two bathrooms with a bathtub and shower. Interaction with GuestsI'm very approachable during your stay, and happy to share ideas for day trips, local attractions, restaurants and more. The NeighborhoodOur rural neighbourhood is friendly and vibrant. While many of our melodious neighbours are birds, we also have some lovely human, horse and dog neighbours! Getting AroundRipple Farm is off the public transportation grid! Having your own vehicle is a must. Other Things to NoteIn the summer, water conservation measures may apply.

The SpaceA great home away from home where comfort meets practicality! Just three stairs so it's not a pain to lug stuff from your convenient street parking. Enjoy the Queen-sized foam bed and topper. Please let us know if you require the tall air mattress (book for 3 adults and bring to our attention in messages). The deep sofa is quite comfy but at 5' is only suitable for kids or the shortest adults. We even lend you handmade slippers to help you feel at home ☺ Guest AccessWe will send you a key code when the suite is ready for you so you can come and go at your leisure. Please let us know if might not be able to check your Airbnb account before your check-in. Please check your Airbnb account through your visit as that is how we will check on how you're doing and provide pertinent information should something arise. Interaction with GuestsEven though we both work from home, coming and going a lot, we rarely meet our guests in person. We are easy to reach via Airbnb message and text. Don't hesitate to connect as we truly do want you to enjoy your time here in the valley and in our suite. The NeighborhoodWe are within easy walking distance of playgrounds and parks, the main mall, strip malls, movie theater, bus routes, and the Air Park where you can access the Courtenay River and ocean, where you can walk, picnic, kayak, etc. A longer walk in the opposite direction gets you to our downtown core with unique shops and restaurants, performance theaters, and more river access. With a vehicle it is very easy to get your feet in the sand, your bikes on the trails, your boat in the water, or your skiis on the snow. The suite is also the perfect home base for day trips to places like Nanaimo, Coombs, Cumberland, and Campbell River. Again, though our exterior needs work your suite is complete. Our neighbourhood is not the prettiest or trendiest but it is safe and quiet and the location can't be beat. Getting AroundWe are very centrally located so navigating the area by vehicle is simple and it's easy to catch public transit. There is always plenty of parking on the street. We've hosted plenty of guests who didn't have a car - quite easy for most people to walk to the nearby mall and greyhound bus station, our quaint down town, great restaurants, and of course the ocean too! Other Things to NoteWe've stocked the kitchen with basics - everything you need for cooking and eating plus things like a blender, small kettle, oils, and oatmeal. Unfortunately previous guests cleaned us out of spices :( The TV isn't a cable or satellite. It is has only four internet channels: weather, kids', YouTube, and your Netflix account. You can connect your laptop and surf the web with the cable we provide. Or bring your own cable to connect your phone or tablet. The only coffee maker is a French Press. We are project people who come and go often so we can only offer you street parking. It's is more convenient for the suite's access anyway. As time and funds allow we are renovating the outside of the house. Every time you stay it will look a little better :) Though the suite was repainted a year ago, it's ten years old so of course it isn't perfect. Don't hesitate to let us know if we missed something or if you have any questions or concerns. We may not be able to help but at least let us try.
