The SpaceReachable by 2 ferries from Campbell River (first to Quadra, then to Cortes), Cortes Island is a small island with a progressive counter-culture vibe. The cabin is fully equipped with full kitchen, bath with tub and sawdust toilet, WiFi, ipod dock (iPhone 4 or earlier connector), tv/dvd, phone for local calls. It has a rustic feel in harmony with nature. Downstairs is an open living room, dining room and kitchen with wood stove and sunset views west out over Gorge Harbour. Upstairs is a large bedroom with 2 queen beds and 1 double bed. Surrounding the cabin are large wooden decks built into the mossy bluffs. There is a small rocky beach just below the cabin for swimming. If you'd like to explore the harbour by boat, kayaks are available for rent at the Gorge Harbour Marina (about a 5 min drive away). Note: the Wifi is new as of Aug 2014. Getting internet access to this remote spot is a expensive undertaking and there is limited monthly download capacity so we ask you avoid large downloads and it is not appropriate for very heavy users. Peak summer rentals are Saturday to Saturday only and for a minimum of a week. Other periods the dates are flexible but with a 3 day minimum. This cabin isn't for everyone so please check with us before booking and we'll make sure the place is right for you. Please also check the location of Cortes Island before booking, to get there from Vancouver requires 3 ferries and about 8 hours so it is not really suitable for a weekend trip from the city unless you are already on Vancouver Island. Some details / frequently asked questions: What is a sawdust toilet? There is an indoor toilet but it goes into a bucket (accessed from outside the cabin) which you must empty into an outhouse pit every few days. We do not live on the island so support is limited. A neighbor can help with emergencies. We do have a cleaner that comes in between visitors but there is no laundry at the cabin and no time for her to do laundry. As such we request visitors either bring their own linens (sheets, towels) or launder any used at the laundromat before they leave. You are also responsible for making sure all your dishes are done, the kitchen is tidy and the toilet pail is emptied before you go. You must also take all garbage with you or to the dump before you leave. The driveway up to the cabin is gravel and steep in parts. You don't need a 4WD but if there is snow on the ground you may be better off parking at the bottom of the driveway and walking the 300 m or so up to the cabin. The cabin is spacious but there are just two big open rooms plus the bathroom. The upstairs is separated by an open stairway so keep in mind that you can't close a door and get full noise separation. Interaction with GuestsNot at all. You will have complete privacy. We are available by phone or a neighbor is available nearby in case of emergencies. The NeighborhoodCortes Island is a small island with about 800 year round residents. Summer time population is significantly greater. During the off-season the groceries stay open but not much else. The island is fairly sprawling though, most things are between 5 and 10km from the cabin so a car is pretty much required. During the summer there are also a selection of restaurants. Too see some recommended island places scroll down to the map and click the [-] button to see some of the places we recommend on the island. Getting AroundThere are two ferries required from Campbell River to reach Cortes Island. One from Campbell River to Quadra Island and then from Quadra to Cortes Island. Check the BC Ferries website for schedule information. Many visitors have asked us if they can get here without a car. We have had visitors arrive by boat (the harbour is very calm for anchoring but there is no dock) and I've cycled to the cabin myself. But there is no public transport (a taxi is sometimes available on the island) and the cabin is about 8km from either the ferry or most stores/restaurants (in the opposite direction at Manson's Landing) so it's pretty difficult to do without a car. Distances by road / time driving to Gorge Harbour Marina: 4.5 km / 6 min Ferry Terminal: 8 km / 10 min Squirrel Cove: 7 km / 9 min Hague Lake (swimming): 7 km / 9 min Manson's Landing Store, Coop, Community Hall: 8 km / 11 min Hollyhock: 11 km / 15 min

The SpaceThis serene property was homesteaded in 1913 and was once an orchard. Fruit bearing trees remain with heritage pears available in September. Unwind here! Explore the private bay, seek out unique viewpoints and hike the well-maintained trails. A 10 minute kayak to Refuge Cove offers unique shops, coffee, burgers, groceries and laundry facilities and much more. Boating offers abundant fishing, prawning and oysters available everyday. The property is presently being converted into a vineyard and corporate retreat. Until that time the cabin is being offered as a vacation rental. Regular rates are $2850 per week + $ 150.00 for cleaning before and after arrival. Relax on the new deck and enjoy the views and wildlife. This is an off the grid, self-contained boat access only property with water taxi and float plane easily arranged. The cabin is located 30 minutes by boat North of Lund and 5 minutes by boat East of Squirrel Cove. Refuge Cove, B.C. is located approximately 150 km Northwest of Vancouver between the Mainland and Vancouver Island. Refuge Cove is a year-round community in the heart of the Desolation Sound area of the Inside Passage. A centrally located supply stop for boaters traveling in or near Desolation Sound, offering a wide range of services including moorage, fuel, groceries, ice, showers, laundry, espresso, and other supplies. Most of the services are seasonal, operating from June through September. During the rest of the year, the general store and fuel docks are open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Refuge Cove is home to about twenty families during the warm summer months. Hundreds of boaters stop here daily during the summer, relaxing and provisioning for their Desolation Sound adventures. During the off season there are a handful of year round residents that call Refuge Cove home. Refuge Cove can be accessed by one of two ways. By boat or by plane. It is possible to get within 3 miles of Refuge Cove by Car, with a short crossing by boat. Alternatively during the summer months there is direct flight service by Kenmore Air. Float planes land right at the government dock a short distance from the property. Desolation Sound Provincial Marine Park (8,256 Hectares) is British Columbia’s largest marine park. This includes more than 60 km of shoreline, several offshore islands, and a gradually rising upland that contains a number of lakes, waterways, and waterfalls. Unwin Lake; a 173-hectare body of fresh water is the parks largest. Set back to the North and East, Coast Mountains soar to more than 2,400 meters. The warm waters surrounding the area teem with sea life. Ideal for swimming, scuba diving and feasting on your catch of the day, salmon, cod, prawns, crab, clams and oysters. Plenty other tasty morsels lie beneath on the oceans floor; to acquire them you must put on your scuba gear and get a little wet. Cortes Island Cortes Island, just across the channel, is where the big salmon congregate in early autumn. This 116 square mile island is accessible by ferry (16 car and 150 passenger capacity) and offers fantastic scenery, the freshest air in the world, idyllic beaches, and great fishing. This island boasts only two “stop signs” and is very popular with the tourists in the summer months. Campbell River Campbell River, population approximately 25,000, also known as the Salmon Capital of the World, is situated on Discovery Passage, on the north-east coast of Vancouver Island, facing the islands of Quadra, Cortes, Read and Redonda. The major industries of this area are forestry, fishing, mining, and tourism. Powell River Powell River with a population of 18,000, this friendly seaside town offers ‘big city’ amenities and luxury services without the ‘big city’ parking and traffic hassles. A full-service hospital, medical, dental, chiropractic, physiotherapy and massage therapy clinics, health and beauty spas, a newly renovated recreation complex, full banking facilities, marine services, outdoor guides and outfitters, plus a wide range of retail outlets, art galleries, gift shops and fine dining are all within easy access. Lund Just around the corner is the historic community named after a city in Sweden. It was established in 1899 when the Thulin Brothers started to build the hotel, which is still in use today. Recently the hotel has changed ownership and has recently seen a major renovation. For most of the early years Lund served as a port for fisherman. Today Lund thrives on its attraction from tourists seeking the neighboring Gulf Islands and marine parks. Savary Island Situated 6km (4mi) west of Lund and accessible only by boat or water taxi, Savary is known as BC’s south sea island for its mild climate and sandy beaches. Eight km (5mi) long and crescent-shaped, Savary Island sits in warm waters where tides from northern Vancouver Island mingle with tides from the south; ocean temperatures are generally in the 22 degrees C (72 degrees F) range. Since there are no campsites here, accommodation takes the form of cabin rental or Bed-and-Breakfast. About 70 people live year-round on this pearl of an island, which looks like it floated up from the South Seas. Unlike most Gulf Islands, Savary runs east-west and is really an 8km clay ridge covered in sand. The south shore has the strait winds so it has big rollers and attracts surfers. The biggest arbutus tree in BC is located on the north shore of the island. The residents voted against having electricity. There is a public wharf and floats at Keefer Bay. Climate and Weather The Upper Sunshine Coast, from Saltery Bay to Desolation Sound boasts approximately 1,900 hours of sunshine annually. Summer temperatures vary from 70-90 degrees Fahrenheit (20 to 30 degrees Celsius) while winter temperatures are mild. Keywords: Stay where the yachters play! Private 4 acre getaway located at the mouth of Desolation Sound. Property includes cabin, shop, covered dock, private bay and hiking trails. 10 minutes by rowboat or kayak to the amenities of Refuge Cove. 5 minutes by boat to the amenities of Squirrel Cove.

After about 20 minutes, watch for a fire-station sign on the right, brown and red mailboxes on the left of a turn-off called "Craig Rd". The highway here swings to the left and Craig Rd swings to the right. Turn off here on to Craig Rd, and shortly, you will turn right onto "Plummer Creek Rd". Follow this for 2.5 km. Pretty soon, it turns from pavement into gravel, gets quite bumpy, please go slow. It starts to go downhill and into the woods. You'll go by an old sand pit with gates on the sides, and on down into thicker mature forest. Ignore all signs of 'closed road'. At the bottom, it levels out and swings left. In a few hundred yards there will be a fork, stay left and go up a rise. Then after a couple of turns, it opens up into a garden where you'll see "Koppen - 9120" Park to the right by the sign in the pull over. Also, once here: Since we make our own power, we need to be mindful of electricity consumption, and turn off lights and devices when not in use.

A village with about three hundred year-round residents, the population swells in the heat of summer as visitors boat, drive, or cycle here to enjoy Lund's charm and to access Desolation Sound Provincial Park, the Copeland Islands, Okeover Inlet, the Sunshine Coast Trail, and tropical Savary Island. Tiny as it is, Lund has most of the amenities you will need for your stay – food and activities. On the north side of Lund Harbour is the historic Lund Hotel boasting a restaurant and pub with ocean views, a laundromat, general store with liquor outlet, post office, kayak rental shop, and outstanding local artisans' gallery. Settled mid-Harbour is a bakery café, a sweater and book store, and a business that offers zodiac boat tours and kayak rentals. Perched over the south side of Lund Harbour is a seafood restaurant. It is accessed via a historic boardwalk which passes and old waterwheel. A word of advice, avoid driving a motorhome down to the waterfront because it is difficult to turn around. Park in the parking lot by the “Mile 0” marker and walk the extra few steps. Nearby Savary Island is rimmed by sandy white beaches and warm water - only minutes away by water taxi which offers service year round. Sarah Point, 12km north of Lund, is the start of the 180km-long Sunshine Coast Trail which ends in Saltery Bay. With several access points and tributaries along its route, this scenic trail offers easy day hikes and free hut-to-hut hiking for multi-day trekks. Outside the north end of the Lund Harbour, the pristine Copeland Islands Marine Park (aka Ragged Islands) hugs the shoreline toward world-renowned Desolation Sound. another route to Desolation Sound is along Okeover Inlet past the mariculture farms and through Malaspina Inlet. both popular waterways are happily shared by sport fishers, pleasure boaters, kayakers and avid scuba divers who enjoy the excellent underwater visibility and abundant sea life. Sightseeing boats offer easy access to the area's ocean playground while kayakers intrigue curious sea lions, seals, dolphins, and rogue pods of orca whales. Stunning scenery, magical ambience and amazing wildlife await you, as you sail around the Coastal gem of Western Canada: Desolation Sound. Designed for 2 couples, these 3, 4 or 5 day charters are fully skippered allowing you as much or as little hands-on sailing as you wish. Enjoy the breathtaking scenery, try your hand at fishing, or drop traps for crabs and prawns to BBQ and feast on that evening! You can optionally hire a private chef for the duration of your trip to enjoy the ultimate luxury vacation! You will have a fully qualified skipper who will be responsible for the boat, and fully invested in making sure you have the time of your life onboard! Your skipper will also be a fully qualified sailing instructor, so you can gain as much knowledge as you wish while on the trip, or you can choose to simply sit back and take in the stunning scenery and wildlife. The Neighbourhood Desolation Sound, the largest and perhaps most famous marine park in British Columbia, is considered by many boaters to be one of the top three cruising grounds in the world - along with Fiji and the Bay of Islands in New Zealand. The waters of Desolation Sound are calm, sheltered and warm with lots of protected anchorages, and plentiful oysters, clams, prawns and salmon. The park consists of more than 14,000 acres of high land and 6,350 acres of shoreline and water. There are also four lakes and one waterfall in Desolation Sound Marine Park, and the warmest salt water north of Mexico (82 degrees Fahrenheit!) awaits swimmers in Pendrell Sound. The area was named Desolation Sound by Captain George Vancouver who first sailed here in 1792 and saw the silent and remote coast. The shoreline varies from low, rolling hills to 4.500-foot peaks with many protected anchorages tucked into bays, coves and inlets. Here are some of the most popular Desolation Sound anchorages - but there are many more to discover for yourself! Prideaux Haven This incredibly beautiful, well-protected harbour has many islets, coves, inlets, and passages for yachts to drop anchor. In the summer, Prideaux Haven is one of the most popular, active anchorages on the B.C. coast, with warm saltwater swimming and socializing among friendly vacationers. Mink Island The island may be private property, but it still provides one of the most scenic, popular anchorages in the area. The outer anchorage is exposed, but has proven to be safe and deep, while a shallower, more protected anchorage exists behind a small islet near the head of the cove. Tenedos Bay This deep bay is more than 300 feet in the central area, but there are lots of coves and nooks shallow enough for small craft. The most protected anchorages are at the north end of the bay, but the eastern area is usually the busiest, with a trail onshore leading to Unwin Lake - a beautiful, secluded swimming area just a five-minute walk away. Fresh water is available here. Okeover Arm This inlet offers a marina in Penrose Bay as well as Okeover Resort, Okeover Provincial Park, and a public float on its western shore. Power is available here, but there is no water and no garbage dump. Anchorages are located in the warm, sheltered waters of Penrose Bay and near the head of the inlet. A lot of this Desolation Sound area is leased as oyster beds. Grace Harbour Coming in from Malaspina Inlet, there are several anchorages here, and lots of areas to explore. The inner harbour is completely protected and the shore offers trails and old logging roads for hiking, including a path to a freshwater lake for swimming. Boaters can beach dinghies and check out a park information board to acquaint with the surroundings. Other favourite anchorages in the Desolation Sound area include Pendrell Sound, Roscoe Bay and Teakerne Arm on the Redonda Islands, while Mansons Landing and Squirrel Cove on Cortes Island are also wonderful places to stop. On the Way to Desolation Sound Powell River, a large town on the northern Sunshine Coast, offers marinas, grocery stores, shops, restaurants and a liquor store for provisioning. A bit further north is Lund, a smaller, more scenic town with a marina, general/liquor store, pub, bakery, and hotel. It is a great stop for provisioning before heading into the Desolation Sound area. Getting Around Depending on the length of your booking you will be able to discuss and plan your route around Desolation Sound with your skipper. Each night you will have the option of anchoring in a secluded cove with a scenic, peaceful setting, or you can moor up at a local marina to take in some of the great local restaurants.
