The Squid Jiggers Trail 6 km loop starts from the house along volcanic rock shoreline and returns by scenic road back to home base. At points along the trail you may see whales and icebergs, as well as neighbouring Fogo Island. As you descend from Tallboy Lookout, you are encouraged to visit the Seal Harbour Gallery and the Old Shoppe Museum. The Shoreline Trail, Bird Gaze Trail and Indian Lookout Trail are also recommended. Kayakers, artists, and others with rugged creative energy are encouraged to stay with us on Change Islands. A highlight for many is a visit to the Change Islands Newfoundland Pony Sanctuary. Your accommodation is in a private room (double or single) in a private home. The kitchen, living room, and bathroom are shared with the household. There is plenty of parking. Reception for your cell phone is available using Bell or Telus. Internet access available in the house and by the Newfoundland and Labrador Public Library is at A.R.Scammell Academy School Tuesdays 1-4pm and 7-9pm, Wednesdays 1-5pm and Thursdays 1-5pm subject to change. Check the ferry schedule online prior to finalizing your plans (URL HIDDEN) The ferry usually runs to Change Islands five times per day. You are advised to arrive at the ferry terminal at least 30 minutes prior to boarding. The ferry crossing takes about 25 minutes. Nearby we have the Outport Museum and Tea Room where you can get the very best in traditional Newfoundland cuisine (voted one of the best places to eat in Canada every year since 2006!). You can also take a trip down memory lane by going through the museum and learn a lot about our local French Shore history in this large outport. During your stay you can expect great cuisine, clean and comfortable surroundings. Also you can expect the walking trails to be easy to moderate, the beach to be very clean and so beautiful! Sunsets are breathtaking as are the sunrises. We do get a lot of wind at times, so that makes for an interesting dynamic. Our bathroom is shared, large and scrupulously clean. There is a 2nd half bath on the main floor - also scrupulously clean. The whole house is very well maintained and you can feel comfortable even in bare feet. There is a large 'bridge' outside with two very beckoning deck lounges to rest and relax on - soak in the sun and just smell the fresh salt air. On the deck outside the kitchen there is a bistro table and chairs - perfect to enjoy a beverage or light meal with a view of the harbour, boats, hillsides and watch the clouds, birds and rainbows. We are a 2 minute walk from the Atlantic Ocean, with views of the ocean and harbour from the bedroom windows, as well as the hills of La Scie, which come aflame in colour in the fall months. What makes my place unique? Well it would certainly be the cuisine, and the weaving studio, and the remoteness, yet being centrally located in this beautiful outport. On this peninsula we have a snowmobile trail network and offer to host you in the winter months, as well, so you can come with snow machines or snowshoes and go out on the trails then, too. During the summer months there is the possibility to take a boat trip to view the icebergs and humpback and minke whales and the incredible rock formations that make this Island so unique. Tours leave from the floating dock in the harbour, just across from Fair Haven Retreat. You can go to the dock and ask the fishermen if they will take you out. Many of our guests have had wonderful, educational, exciting trips out with the local fishermen. Pets: $25 fee for pets. Guide dogs are very welcome. I also welcome you to bring your travelling companion pets. The closest veterinarian is located in Grand Falls-Windsor - about 3 hours away. We have a resident dog - Zoe - who is a calm well-mannered and well-trained Shepherd/Golden mix. Guest AccessGuests welcome to use either bathroom, the dining room, kitchen eating area (meals will be cooked for you), bistro table and chairs on one deck, lounge chairs on a separate deck. Comfy couches in living room. Interaction with GuestsGenerally always in the house, or in the garden, you can find me at a moment's notice if you need help or just want to visit. You are welcome to observe the weaving and spinning in action, and also to visit while your meals are being prepared. Lessons in spinning and weaving are offered in the fall and winter months. The NeighborhoodThe views and quality of life in the outport of La Scie are unique. Lovely vistas from all the hiking trails, the lookouts over the harbour and out to the Atlantic, see icebergs, whales, capelin spawning. Great bird watching, and the perfect place for rock hounds - incredible history in the rock formations here - very unique. We also have a wonderful museum with a tea room that provides traditional Newfoundland cuisine and the owners will help to answer your questions about the area. Boat tours available by your going over to the wharf and asking the fishermen if they will take you out. Getting AroundPublic transit bus comes to Baie Verte. Private transport from there. Parking is included at the house. Car rentals available at Deer Lake and Gander airports. Other Things to NoteWe have a dog in the house. Very well behaved and friendly. The house is kept thoroughly cleaned. She is a small Shepherd/Husky mix. We accept guest reservations with a discount for weekly and monthly stays.

On the island are wonderful hiking trails. The Change Islands Newfoundland Pony Sanctuary is a highlight for many visitors to the island. Getting AroundPublic access to Change Islands is usually by the car/passenger ferry that arrives on the south end of the island. It is about 12kms to drive into town, where most things are within walking distance. Other Things to NoteThe Change Islands Newfoundland Pony Sanctuary has a new barn for the ponies!!! La Scie is on the 'French Shore' of Newfoundland, with a rich cultural heritage and many landmarks of interest. We have 5 easy to moderate hiking trails, spectacular views from the lookouts, which can be reached by well maintained gravelled and boardwalk trails and stairways. The icebergs are already passing along the coastline, perhaps you'll see one when you come for a visit! Fair Haven Retreat is a very clean home where you will find very comfortable furnishings, peace and great food, as well as a full-time weaver/spinner/rug-hooker to show you the heritage fiber arts. Quiet, peaceful, restful are all words that our guests have used to describe their stay. Lessons in weaving, spinning and knitting are available, upon request. Lots of interesting formations in the rocky outcrops. La Scie is on the tip of the Baie Verte Peninsula - the geology here is truly one of a kind in the world. If you are a rock enthusiast this place will provide you with ample opportunity to discover ancient formations. The eagles soar right over the house, and the trails are wonderful to explore, with waterfalls, viewpoints, barrens and more. Great bird watching. The coastline is impressive and boat tours can be arranged by your going over to the fishermen's wharf and talking to the skippers there. Getting AroundWalking, snowshoeing and snowmobiling are great ways to get around here. The main roads are easily accessible with cars, too. The SpaceComfort and coziness abound here! This charming fishing village home features three bedrooms, one with a queen bed and two with double beds. All bedrooms are upstairs and the bathroom is located downstairs. On the main floor there's a victorian style dining room, perfect for an afternoon tea or serving up that dinner you cooked-up in the kitchen! The farmhouse style kitchen is well stocked for basic cooking and baking. In the sitting room, comfy seating allows you and and your friends to put your feet up and read your favourite book. Should it rain, catch up on cable tv or pop in a dvd with the small flat screen tv. The scale of the Pumpkin House is quite cozy, it comfortably accommodates 4 people. Just a "heads-up" for our taller Airbnb friends, our ceilings you may find to be a bit lower than todays standards -- 6'7" Outside there is a wrap-around deck with benches and seating; perfect for bird and 'berg watching, catching the sunset or just kicking back and watching the world go by. During the warm summer days we may pop by to water flowers and to upkeep the maintenance of the property. If you need anything at all, we live very close by and are always available to help out with what you may need during your stay. The NeighborhoodThe house sits on a fenced property in the quaint town of Durrell; part of the of Twillingate Islands. All of our neighbours are wonderful and one of them is a shipyard where you can watch boats coming and going. Twillingate has been called one of the most picturesque outports in Newfoundland and Labrador, it's an island made accessible to vehicles by causeways." It has become famous for it's reputation of being the 'Iceberg Capitol of the World'. As early as May these "mammoth ice sculptures" drift literally around the town. We even see them from the house's windows and deck! In town there are several ocean charter boats that offer different daily tours for icebergs and whale watching! There is a fabulous winery (within three minutes walking distance) that produces award winning wines from local berries. Art galleries, gift shops and coffee houses are all within a short driving distance. Twillingate has a few restaurants to try; from fancy to fish and chips. A local pub serves up Iceberg Beer and gets you screeched-in! The Dinner Theatres serve up culture, music and good grub! There are also several museums and the Long Point Lighthouse where you can learn more about the history of the wooden boat builders of Newfoundland. For the outdoors adventure folk, there are several breath-taking hikes that lead you through wilderness to the ocean's edge. Twillingate is about an hour and a half from the Fogo Island Ferry making it quite easy to be able to enjoy a day trip to Fogo, Joe Batt's Arm and Tilting. Twillingate is in the heart of your road tripping paradise, not too far from private beaches and day-trip adventures! The SpaceThis is a remote location in the heart of Central Newfoundland on the TC Trail, 15 drive minutes from the ocean and 1 hour drive from Twillingate and icebergs, whales. The rooms are newly furnished and very comfortable cozy rooms, with loons called on the lake. We also have a TC Certified Mussel Bed Tour Boat ((website hidden)) that can be chartered to visit the historic, resettled community of Exploits Island, do ocean fishing, search for whales, Icebergs, visit seabird colonies and spectacular ,pristine scenery in the "Caribbean of the North"! Guest AccessThe guests can access the full property when we are away, but when we are here there will only be 2 rooms available. Children must be supervised at all times especially if they are swimming or near the lake. Lifejackets are required for youth non swimmers. We have a canoe to paddle the lake on the calm evenings with incredible sunsets. The sauna can also be used at extra cost of $10 per use. Interaction with GuestsWe will offer suggestions for their travel plans in NL and provide breakfast. Dinners can be arranged at extra cost. A BBQ and stove available. The NeighborhoodIndian Arm Lake East has 9 cottages / homes, with great helpful neighbours. The cottages are mainly occupied in the summer months but some live here for most of the year. This is relaxation heaven with little noise and lots of wildlife to see in the area as you walk along the many trails in the area. Loons swim by our windows and the fishing for trout and salmon is fantastic during the seasons. The lake and Campbellton River is one of the best fishing areas in Eastern Canada and NL. The local saying is: "If you don't like the weather, just wait five minutes." Be prepared for anything. Also, do not go out onto the ocean without an experienced guide. This off the grid eco pod uses the Eco-Temp, tankless hot water system for both shower and sink.
