River's Ridge is a local photographer's home. 100 years ago it was a simple, stone-foundation home sitting high on the banks of the Gananoque River, the main river flowing into the St. Lawrence River and at the very centre of the world famous 1000 Islands. The original charm and wonderful views remain, but it now features a gourmet kitchen, a comfortable outdoor patio and a private dock with access to the 1000 Islands. River's Ridge offers both a rare, private home to explore the islands and a location only steps away from everything the town of Gananoque offers. The SpaceOur hand-built one-room cabin is bright and spacious, with a functional kitchen area featuring lots of counter space, a large sink (but not running water) and the convenience of a 3-burner propane stove-top. It is well-stocked with pots & pans, kettle & French press for making coffee, dishes, knives and utensils. The open-air sawdust toilet is tucked privately into the trees, about 20 steps away. Wood-heated and winterized, the 16x24 foot wood-framed cabin is set on a hardwood forested hillside; it's approximately a 5 minute hike through the forest from your parking spot, so pack lightly and be sure to bring footwear suitable for sometimes wet and rough terrain. Just a 10 minute drive from the town of Gananoque, the cabin is on 127 acres of private property within the Frontenac Arch Biosphere, a geographic corridor between Algonquin provincial park and the upper Adirondack mountains. The land here holds mixed hardwood forests, groves of Hemlock and White pine, grassy meadows, steep rocky highlands and lush vibrant ponds and wetlands. Guest AccessYou're welcome to freely explore the surrounding woods and trails, but please respect the privacy of the main house and outbuildings. We're always available if needed, but otherwise your privacy and solitude are assured. Interaction with GuestsWe respect our guests' privacy and never come to the cabin unannounced. We are always happy to share the 'insider scoop' on neat things to do around here. We want to make sure you have a terrific time in this beautiful place we call home. The NeighborhoodOur land is within the Frontenac Arch, an ancient granite bridge spanning between the Canadian Shield and the Adirondack Mountains in the north-eastern U.S. Its incredibly rich natural environment and history was recognized in 2002 when it became a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. We'll provide a guide that outlines some of the fabulous cycling, paddling, and hiking possibilities in the area. . Fun things to do include swimming at one of the many public access points along the St. Lawrence River, going for a hike on the Marble Rock Trail, just 5 minutes up the road; watching the sunset and listening to live music at the waterfront park in Gananoque after dinner at one of our great local restaurants, or a tasting tour at the Gananoque Brewing Company. How about Sunday brunch at the Socialist Pig, or drop-in yoga at the Ledger Room? There's also a nice hike about forty minutes from here at Rock Dunder, with a spectacular 360 degree view at the top; there's a huge tree-top adventure rope course at Skywood, along the scenic Thousand Islands Parkway to the east, the woodworking museum at Grass Creek Park along the parkway to the west, self-guided private gallery tours in Gan, Kingston and Brockville, kayak rentals at the Gan waterfront, and farmer's markets (on Thursdays in Gananoque from May-October, Kingston year-round on Saturdays). If you feel like staying put, grab a growler of beer from the brewery or make a mug of hot tea, wrap yourself in a cozy blanket and dive into a good book in the warm glow of the wood stove. Getting AroundWe're 3 kms from the Gananoque train station which is the only public transit nearby. The town of Gananoque is approximately 10 kms away, while Kingston is about 30km. A car is probably necessary, though we're willing to fetch you if you want to come by train or bus and simply stay put ;) Other Things to NotePlease read this BEFORE requesting to book: **This cabin is completely OFF-GRID** • The cabin is outfitted with simple LED lighting run by solar-charged battery power; we also provide battery-powered lanterns and flashlights for your use. You may also charge your phone through the USB port on the power inverter. • There is no running water. Fresh well-water for drinking, cooking and washing is provided. There is no shower or flush toilet; facilities consist of a traditional open-air sawdust toilet outside the cabin. During the summer months public shower facilities are available at the marina in Gananoque. • In colder months, firewood for heating is provided at no extra cost. • Winter weather can be very unforgiving and on occasion will wreak havoc on the driveway, which is 800 metres in from the road and punctuated by a couple of steep inclines/declines, narrow passes and sharp corners. Ice and snow may make it impassable in which case you will need to park at the road and be prepared to hike in. We will do our best to avoid this, and can nearly always at least shuttle you in (via 4WD and really good snow tires) but timing is everything and you should know in advance as this may be a deterrent (or hey! it could be fun :) Sleds for pulling gear provided!). • During the warmer months you may wish to bring ice (we provide a moderate sized cooler for you to use). Groceries are available in Gananoque and Lansdowne. • Fresh cotton bedding is provided. • SPECIAL NOTE: the cabin is in the middle of a wild and natural environment, so guests must be comfortable coexisting with the native wildlife, including mice, insects, snakes (all non-venomous), porcupine, deer, birds, coyote, squirrels, skunks, etc, etc. Mice do get into the cabin occasionally, following the smell of food. If the presence of mice or insects would cause you concern or discomfort, please do not request to book the cabin.

The SpaceSet in the woods on 127 acres of Canadian Shield forest, meadows and wetlands, this modest open-concept home is perfect for a family or group of close friends. Ideally located just outside the lovely town of Gananoque, and a picturesque drive to historic downtown Kingston, we're also about halfway between Toronto & Montreal and 1.5 hrs from Ottawa. Guest AccessA large kitchen with gas range and adjoining screened-in porch offers an opportunity to keep your food costs in check (though we will happily point you to some of the best eats in the area!). The master bedroom is upstairs, and is 'open-concept' (a partial wall offers some privacy, but there is no door) and features a queen-sized bed. Three walls of windows make for a bright airy space. The second bedroom is on the main floor and has a double bed with a memory foam topper for extra comfort. The sitting room offers additional sleeping space (a daybed easily converts to sleep two) but limited privacy. One room is off-limits, though you will have the house to yourselves for the duration of your stay. Please note that the only bathroom is also upstairs - please keep this in mind when booking for more than a couple sharing the master bedroom. Whoever is staying upstairs will want to be okay with their family/friends coming up to use the bathroom (see labelled photos for visual explanation of the layout). Interaction with GuestsI will be available should you need anything but will otherwise make myself scarce. (I typically stay on the property, but occasionally will take the opportunity to travel, in which case I will be accessible via text). The NeighborhoodThe Frontenac Arch is a UNESCO world heritage reserve, where five forest regions merge, creating tremendous natural diversity. Read more on their website (which you'll have to do an internet search for, as links are not allowed!). Be sure to click the green "Explore" tab for all kinds of info on what to see/do while you're here. Getting AroundThere is no public transit. It will be necessary to have a vehicle unless you are avid cyclists (the town of Gananoque is approximately 9 kms away, Kingston is 30 kms). Other Things to Note** Cooler season bookings: It is important to note that the house is heated with a high-efficiency wood-burning stove. It is quite easy to operate - I learned myself after having never used one - but I'd want to ensure you were comfortable with that. It will of course be warm when you arrive and I can give you a quick tutorial on how to light/keep a fire burning, adjust temperature etc. I do have a couple of small (soundless) space heaters that can be used when a fire would provide too much heat (ie. in the shoulder seasons). Wood and kindling etc is provided. **

A Captain/Guide is often available & suggested to escort you and/ or your boat to Thurso Bay- Contact host about this service. If you do not have a boat we can likely get you to & from the island as an added service! For the truly adventurous, we can even arrange to barge your SUV/Jeep or other suitable vehicle to the island! This particular property is close to most everything 'happening' on Grindstone Island, yet the surrounding woods and quarry provide a buffer against much of the Summer Island bustle. While the beach and the dance hall are a short walk, there is just enough geography that it's generally quiet when you settle in for the night. Our first experience in the Thousand Island was our honeymoon, September 2001. We mutually fell in love with the River; this led to local employment, children, and Grindstone Island. This cottage is equipped with a wood stove insert, a monitor kerosene heater as well as an out house/ composting toilet that is used during winter months (traditional bathroom during Spring, Summer, Fall). This makes spending a few days on the Island over the Winter an enjoyable adventure!

The NeighborhoodGananoque Lake is located within the Frontenac Arch Biosphere, designated a UNESCO reserve due to its globally unique ecosystem. On this ancient bedrock of granite, 5 different forest regions meet, marking the southernmost range for some species (e.g. lake trout) and northernmost for others (e.g. pitch pine). What this means in practice is that the area boasts an incredible abundance and diversity of plant and animal life - everything from the more common species (e.g. river otters, porcupines, foxes), to the rarer (e.g. bald eagles, flying squirrels, pileated woodpeckers). And of course, the eastern whippoorwill! Getting AroundAccess to the cottage is via private roads and you will need a vehicle. Other Things to NoteThe property is very uneven and there are a couple dozen stone steps to get from the cottage to the shoreline - beautiful, but not suitable for those with mobility issues.
