The SpaceGrowler Heights is a glorious treetop lounge, surrounded by wilderness, with a stunning view unmarred by any signs of humanity. Recently renovated, with a sparkling new modern kitchen, Growler Heights has three more high definition TVs, one more jacuzzi and one more Pacman machine than do most tree forts. My listing indicates that the cottage sleeps 8 people - that is a conservative number, based on four couples, each with their own room. The cottage also features a lakeside bunky/love shack which comfortably sleeps two, as long as, well, you know, as long as you're not fishing buddies... Guest AccessGuests will have the run of the house with the exception of the motorboat and the RZR (not practical due to insurance requirements). The lakefront includes a water trampoline, a row boat, a canoe and a kayak. Interaction with GuestsLittle or no on-site interaction - as much on-line and phone interaction as required leading up to the booking. The NeighborhoodEveryone should have a place on Earth that fills them with joy. This one is mine. Getting AroundWalking, jogging, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, bumper-riding, etc.

The SpaceA Cottage Retreat on Classic Canadian Lake Welcome to our renovated, log cottage with big, bright windows and breathtaking views to our private waterfront and forested, rolling hills on a 2 acre property with 400+ feet of private, clear and clean water frontage with a wood fired stove, wood fired outdoor sauna and an outdoor fire pit. Our retreat is a cabin nestled in a forest, on an aquifer-fed lake with crystal clear lake shores. Deer, beaver, loons, birds, owls and blue herons visit our property daily, In Spring, Summer and Fall.... We have waterfront docks, a floating raft, and huge rock fire-pit along the water. A canoe and paddle boat are there for those who want to explore the lake. This lake is even stocked with trout for those who want to take a rod with them. We have an outdoor shower for the three seasons except winter. Inside the Western Cedar Log Cabin: Ralph Lauren style decor in a 16'x24' cedar log building with loft ceilings, exposed beams and exposed log walls throughout. Open-concept cooking and living area, wood stove, surround sound and flat screen and dvd player. FIrm mattresses, pillows and duvets assure a great night's sleep. The kitchen is equipped for people who like to cook. Good knives, copper bottom pots, crock pot, sandwich/waffle grill, gas bbq - you name it, we have it! Cellular service is very good the lake. You can tether your phone to a laptop to work up there. Set up is for one or two couples or one couple with children. One bedroom with one double and single bunk beds; living room seating converts to a queen bed. There's a huge clawfoot tub in the bathroom and beautiful views from all the windows. Deer hang out on the property throughout the year. During all seasons except winter, our outside hot shower is one of our guests favourite features. Imagine taking a hot shower after a hot sauna or long hike, while watching the birds fly by! In the winter - it's the wood fired sauna and buckets of water or snow to cool down inside the sauna; or just roll around in the snow outside - you will amazed how warm you feel after heating up in the sauna. The cabin is on Wenona Lake, near Loon Lake - a 15 min drive from Village of Haliburton with all amenities including spas, groceries and liquor stores, restaurants, shops, bookstores. Many artist studios are in the area. Mountain biking at Sir Sam's resort, Haliburton Forest for tree top and ground hikes in the region. Note: We do not generally encourage pets but will handle these requests on a case-by-case basis. Guest AccessCheck out time is punctual - due to back-to-back rentals - the cleaners and maintenance folks need to drive in from other parts to do their work. Note: check in time will be 4 pm - check out is 2 pm. Interaction with GuestsI am always a cell phone call or text away for questions while you are there, or leading up to your visit to the cabin. Other Things to NoteCheck out time is important - the cleaners and maintenance folks need to drive in from other parts to do their work and they plan their timing according to our 2 pm checkout - so they can get there and clean in the daylight and prepare for the next guest's check-in at 4 pm. This cabin is ideal for 2 people. Or 4 people who are comfortable in small spaces. It's a one bedroom and has a bed sofa in living room. But it's a cosy small footprint - not a monster cottage!

Nordic cross-country ski trails [5 km] Make friends with winter - a great set of cross country trails just a few minutes from the centre of town. Haliburton Forest [21 km] This huge tract of privately held land was rescued from an oblivion of exploitation and has become one of the world's earliest and finest examples of how to rebuild a forest and make a buck at the same time. Home of an amazingly diverse set of attractions, including dogsledding, snowmobiling, the Walk in the Clouds canopy tour and the wolf centre, camplng, fishing, trails for walking, biking, an astronomical observatory and... a submarine! Unfortunately the sub is now grounded, apparently because the government can't figure out how to regulate it. Sculpture Forest [5 km] A wonderful little walk in the woods in the presence of a diverse collection of spirits. Haliburton Highlands Water Trails Approximately 28,000 + hectares of provincial and municipal public lands comprised of countless lakes, rivers, trails and continuous forest, including the Leslie Frost Centre. It's a huge park and you can easily spend a week or more there, at various levels of engagement. Kingscote Lake at access point 15 is a great place for a day of canoeing and swimming. A quick sampler, and a personal favourite, is a short canoe trip up the Oxtounge River to Ragged Falls, accessible from the western border of the park. A canoe can be rented at the point of entry, no need to transport it on wheels. The Art Hive A local Artist/Artisan Collective located on highway 118 between Carnarvon and Haliburton. Kinmount Theatre [41 km] Not your typical movie theatre - this has to be the funkiest cinema in the world, a theatre, cinema museum and art piece. Worth the price of admission just to take a tour of the film paraphernalia. See if you can figure out how they managed to get five theatres with 550 seats in there. 21 years ago (1993) Jessie and I had our breath taken away by the beautiful morning sunrise. We looked at each other and both said “We should be sharing this” and Stouffer Mill Bed & Breakfast Getaway was born. It is a constant joy to us to see our guests unwinding from the hustle and bustle of their busy lives as they relax and enjoy our home and property. Many guests arrive with their cell phones in their hands, at the ready, and by the time they leave, many of them can’t find them. We have had to mail back cell phones that were left here. We can remember two guests in particular, who were terminally ill with cancer that returned for a last visit to Stouffer Mill. That makes you feel that you’re doing something right. The industry average for the life of a Bed & Breakfast is about 5 years. This year (2014) we are in our 21st year and still enjoy sharing our home and property with our guests. Many of our guests have become friends and we visit back and forth.

As the National Geographic Magazine (January, 2016) issue, The Power of Parks, states, "When we get closer to nature–be it untouched wilderness or a backyard tree–we do our over-stressed brains a favour. Nature nurtures us." Confederation Homestead is our recommended way for you and your spouse/partner/family/friends to get away from the stresses of city life and rest, or explore our forest, or whatever makes you de-stress. Our 36-acre farm is surrounded by forest, with its own pond, entirely private and quiet.
