The SpaceThis is our dream home and our family home. My husband and I designed the house and my husband and his brother built it. It has been and is still a labour of love. If you have ever built a house yourself you will know that it is never truly finished. Our home has all the amenities and more that you will need to enjoy your stay. You will notice though that we are still working on some aesthetic finishes, none of which will affect the enjoyment of your stay. My husband is currently in the process of closing in what used to be an open concept den. As such, the fourth bedroom is still in need of some drywall finishing.
You enter the house by the front door which is adorned with a lovely porch. The entrance features a large mudroom which leads to a very spacious sun filled open concept kitchen, living room and dining room with soaring 23 foot ceilings. At the back of the house you will find 3 bedrooms; first with a double bed, second with a single over double bunk bed, third with a double bed. There is also a double futon in an alcove off of the hallway in front of the 3 bedrooms. The main floor also includes a 3 piece bathroom, laundry room and walk-in pantry.
There is a swing in the kitchen for the kids and adults alike! Also, a hammock chair to curl up and read in. We also have 4 plasma cars and a bin full of roller blades and roller shoes which are loads of fun on our concrete floors. There are also lots of board games.
On the second floor you will find an open concept 800 square foot loft, with a king size bed, sitting room, office and 5 piece bathroom, including a luxurious jacuzzi tub with a huge shower with a rainfall shower head and side jets.
There is a side porch for outdoor dining and a ceramic grill/smoker for outdoor cooking. You will also find games such as bocce ball and croquet on the side porch.
The house is ICF (insulated concrete forms) construction. The heating is radiant heat in the concrete floors and passive solar heating. You will find that the house is toasty warm in the winter and cool in the summer. We do not have central air conditioning but the design of the home naturally keeps the house cool in the summer. In fact, we have had many people comment on how much they enjoy our central air, only to be surprised that we don't have central air conditioning! You may want to bring indoor shoes to be more comfortable on our concrete floors. Guest AccessGuests will have access to the entire home. The garage is private space and off limits. Please note that we have a permanent tenant living in the apartment over our garage. The entrance to the apartment is through the garage at the side of the house and is completely separate from the main house. The laneway is shared with our tenant. Three cars can park at the back of the laneway without blocking each other in. One of those 3 cars will be our tenants car. When there is no snow there is also room for 2 cars to park off to the side of the laneway without blocking anyone in. During the winter months, you should still be able to fit one car to the side of the laneway.
For guests visiting in the winter, please note that our laneway is ploughed by a snowplough truck. If there is a significant snowfall while you are visiting, we ask that you make the effort to park the cars facing the garage door. That way the plough can clear the laneway all the way to end of the laneway. If you simply pull in to the end of the laneway, it will be difficult for the plough to clear the snow. There is room for 3 cars to park facing the garage door. Again, one of these cars will be our permanent tenant's car.
There is a fridge (not completely empty but help yourself to condiments), stove, dishwasher and washing machine. WiFi is included.
In the winter, we have a small skating pond that we share with our neighbours. It is directly across the street from our laneway. Please feel free to skate. Interaction with GuestsWe will greet you upon your arrival and then leave you to your vacation. We can always be reached through the airbnb app or by cell phone. But, you can walk to everything in Wakefield! Other Things to NoteLewis Road is a dead end street with 12 houses. Our street is an unpaved country road with a steep hill and lots of bumps and potholes. There are also many children who play on our street. For both of these reasons, please drive very slowly.
In the winter, please be careful while driving on the steep hill of our street. Although, we have never had an issue with driving up our hill, in severe winter weather conditions, it is possible that without all wheel drive or 4 wheel drive, you may have difficulty getting up the hill. In this case you could park off to the side at the bottom of the hill.
There are several dogs living on our street. The dogs are all friendly. You will encounter a few of them on our property and on the road during your stay.
