The SpaceThis is truly a majestic space to relax, breathe and just "be". Our property is two and a half hours from the Caribbean, and in close proximity to waterfalls, white water rafting on the Pacuare river, amazing hikes, birding, Catie environmental center, hang gliding, and the most magnificent view of the Turrialba volcano that one could imagine. The property is beautifully landscaped with a walking path around the perimeter. There is a ranchito at the top of the property with authentic barbecue pit and a space to sit in the hammock and look out over the valley as you while away your days. Fresh fruit is available for your picking when in season, and you can even have the opportunity to pick and dry and roast your own coffee beans if you are an adventurous spirit! The cottage has beautiful views and truly brings a sense of peace to the spirit. There are two majestic views from the porches ~ one that shows the beauty of the early morning plant and bird life and the other side of the cottage has the porch with evening view of the Carribbean in the far off as well as the Turrialba volcano! We are open to both short and long term stays, however we do require a three night minimum...but once you get there you will understand why we are in love with this area. Local produce is available from the village and on the weekends in Turrialba fresh fish, vegetables, fruits, cheeses and meats are all brought in from various regions of the area for sale. Ripe pineapple, mango, guayaba, bananas and so much more! Where else would you want to spend your time. This is also a perfect place for folks who are working at Catie or one of the other industries and need a home away from home. Check out the photos and you will see why this is the place for you! Guest AccessFully equipped kitchen with stove with oven, refrigerator, and all you will need to prepare healthy meals from fresh local vegetables and fruits. Hot water shower, plush towels and bedding, double sized bed, all artisan furniture handcrafted by Costa Rica artisans, providing a special warmth and ambiance to this setting. Fresh fruit available for the picking when in season. Gardener tends the property weekly, and for longer term stays (monthly) cottage is cleaned every two weeks. There is a ranchito above the main house (the main house is currently only available for rent during the winter holidays) with hammocks to while away the day...and look at the beauty of the Turrialba volcano across the valley. A truly magical setting and the place to come for a peace filled time away or even extended stays while away from home working at one of the local industries in Turrialba. Washer and dryer available for use for guests of five days or more. There are clothes lines available for drying clothes as well! Interaction with GuestsOwners are generally not on the property as they live in the United States. Caretaker oversees the property and is available for any issues that might arise. Owners are available by e mail and phone at all times. Owners visit the property for extended stays two to three times a year and guests will be notified if owners are on the property or not when cottage is rented. 4 x 4 may be available for rental and airport pick up and drop off also part of package when booking car as well. Airport pick up and drop off service also available from property caretakers for a fee. They are also available to take you on tours, book other tours, and provide you with the true Costa Rican experience should you so desire. There is also the option of adding breakfast to the booking for an additional fee. Full and half day tours also available for those wanting to learn more about the area as well as to see some of the magical out of the way places that make this part of Costa Rica so very special! Let owners know and they will connect you with folks providing these services so that you are all set and ready to go upon your arrival! The NeighborhoodThe cottage is located a 5 minute drive or 10 minute walk up a country road from the village of San Rafael de Santa Cruz. The property is on a mountain and so there are other fincas (ranchitos) located up and down the mountain, but it is peaceful and away from the hustle and bustle of city life. What we love most about the area is that the people of Costa Rica are so warm and welcoming....and one feels immediately at home. We have made wonderful lifelong friends who are always willing to take our guests on excursions and to show them special areas of the region that only the locals know about! Truly a very special place as you will learn from reading our reviews! Getting AroundThe cottage is located a 15 minute taxi or car drive from downtown Turrialba outside of the village of San Rafael de Santa Cruz. It is a ten minute walk from the center of the village of San Rafael de Santa Cruz, and there is a bus that goes from downtown Turrialba to the village on a regular basis. If you have a vehicl(URL HIDDEN)is required due to the road being of rock construction to the house. Very well situated with lots of access to many wonderful sites and adventures! As noted above 4 x 4 available for rental and with rental package comes a pick up and drop off at the airport. Full and half day tours also available to see many of the magical and hidden areas of this very environmentally and culturally rich part of Costa Rica! Other Things to NoteThere are so many things to do and to see in this region. It is off the beaten path of the normal tourist guidebook sites and this is why we have chosen this space to be our next home after retirement. Here you will find the true meaning of the tico way of life...and the pura vida abounds!

The SpaceVolare is in the middle of Costa Rica's true Adventure Capital, yet only 1:45 to the center of San José. Costa Rica's adventure crown jewel - the Pacuare River, Class IV white water, is year round action close to Volare. Canyoning, mountain biking, real jungle, bush whacking, Costa Rica's most active volcano - all close to Volare, all available as private adventures or join group tours. When you arrive we have prepared for you fresh fruits, fresh milk, coffee, tea, sugar, spices, olive oil, condiments -- ready for your use. Volare is super comfortable for six people for sleeping. We can add a single bed in the office... not an "official" sleeping room but works for kids. Guest AccessInside Volare our guests have access to all kitchen equipment (toaster, blender, coffee grinder, coffee maker and Italian Moka coffee pot, microwave, high capacity refrigerator and freezer, high capacity convection oven), to high speed internet, office equipment (including copier, scanner, FAX machine, printers) and telephone for local calls (no charge) plus international phone calls available at cost, plus office supplies (paper, glossy photo paper, pens, notepads, file folders, stapler, paper punch etc). Volare is the ideal place to continue running your business or staying in touch with your home or work. Interaction with GuestsFranklin and Yamilet are the backbone of Volare. Their job is to make everything comfortable and easy for you ... as they have for me for 12 years. Cleaning the house, doing your laundry, replenishing the firewood, cleaning the fireplace, light duty shopping for milk, eggs, bread ... all part of their services. Franklin can go with you to guide you to some hidden places - waterfalls and a crystalline swimming hole, hiking trails and nature areas, mountain bike routes. For an extra cost of $70 Franklin will meet your international flight in San José then drive you in your rental car (if car rental agreement has included him in Additional Driver insurance), through the mayhem of the city and the unmarked country roads getting to Volare. He also knows where to stop for good grocery shopping. Yamilet is an excellent cook of local cuisine, and (for extra cost) she will prepare meals and picnics for you, or serve as your sous-chef, then clean up after meals. She believes making food is an act of love. If you don't speak a bit of Spanish we also provide a bilingual person to make logistics work smoothly. We offer fixed price meals which you can order once in Volare or when you confirm reservations. The NeighborhoodVolare's neighbors often go to work on horseback. It is a small rural community but on a good paved road (national route 230) and close to Turrialba, the city below the deck (10 minutes away) and San Jose, the capital, 1:45 away. Right next to our entrance is the soccer field and grade school (for 25 students) and church. Next to the school is a small supermarket -- fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, eggs, local cheese, bread, soft drinks, beer and some canned goods (but no frozen products or fresh meats). We're on a paved road, with beautiful views and little traffic, and Volare is remote from the road -- no one from the road even knows the house exists. Front entrance has remote control gate. During the day our trusted gardener and housekeeper are nearby, and a bilingual person is available if English is needed. Getting AroundWe highly recommend a rental vehicle.. preferably 4x4. It is not necessary for Volare, but for Costa Rica roads in general. Public bus stops in front of the property (6 to 8 buses per day) and a taxi to Turrialba costs about $10. Volare has secure parking in the carport. Franklin is available to drive your rental car (if you have added him as an additional driver on your rental car insurance). A fully bilingual and educated bilingual guide, for nature or for adventure, is available for $145 per day. Other Things to NoteA lot of guests LOVE to have meals prepared for them by Yamilet, my housekeeper. Eat on the deck overlooking the city, and not worry about driving in the dark from a restaurant. Yami makes fresh and local cuisine with a flair for (non-spicy) preparation... fish, vegetable, beef, pork, pasta, or vegetarian or vegan. Ask for a menu list and prices after you complete the reservation. Volare has appeared in a British TV series on unusual homes. The driving concept of Volare:- COMFORT. TRANQUILITY. PRIVACY with some amazing adventures thrown in.

The house has only one bedroom, but a large kitchen / living area, a hallway and a bathroom with both shower and tub. It has a nice view of Turrialba volcano (about 35 km away) and it is surrounded by spectacular tropical vegetation. It's in the altitude of 600m, so it is never too hot. There are several very small villages in the area, with friendly 'natives' - not many of them speaking English though (needless to say, they speak Spanish). The immediate neighbours though (each living at about 100 yards from the house) are all English speaking expats. Reaching the nearest small city (Turrialba) takes about 1 hour by bus, 25 minutes by car. Note that Costa Rica is an exceptionally well-run, democratic and peaceful country (they don't even have an army - a noble example for the rest of us!). Please keep in mind that the property is more than 2 km off the main road, so a rental car, a bicycle, or willingness to do a lot of walking is a must (taxi is also available). A strong Wi-Fi signal provided by a friendly neighbour. An extra inflatable bed can be provided for an additional person/couple or kids. The charge is $10 per night. An extra person / child can also sleep on a couch in the living room. The house is located on a former coffee plantation made into a gated community of several Canadian/American families. There is a decent road access to it; it is about 2km from the nearest bus stop (buses go every half hour, if not more often). There is a big river nearby (rafting). To get there, one has to take Highway 10 from Turrialba towards Siguirres. 26 km later one reaches a small town of Tres Equis (XXX in English!), and turns left, following a country road for about 3km. At the end of it is a tiny village of La Flor; turning left again, 500 meters later one reaches the "plantation" (as I like to call it), which is on the left side of the road. Enter 9.95, -83.597 on Google Maps to see the exact location (the green arrow will point to the roof of the house).

If you are looking for a chrome, glass, and marble condo, look elsewhere... This is a 100 year old, wooden farmhouse on a working coffee farm (9 Has/23 ac.) in the beautiful Turrialba region. ”Far from the madding crowd”, this property is ideal for relaxing, enjoying nature, or for birdwatching. Enjoy great views of Turrialba Volcano, or watch as the dairy cows graze in the pastures across the unpaved lane, and as night falls ”the lowing herd winds slowly o'er the lea,... And leaves the world to darkness and to me.“ (Actually, contrary to Gray's poem, these cows are silent) But the Turrialba region also offers more active pursuits. The best white water rafting in the country is at nearby Pacuare River (in top 10 in the world, according to Outdoor Magazine), with pickup and return at the farm. Other tours include hiking near active Turrialba Volcano, horseback riding through the CATIE botanical preserve, coffee tours, canopy/zip lining, Tarzan swing, Guayabo archeological park, a snake farm, and more. The SpaceThe three most unique aspects of this property is: 1. the location, on the private edge of a quaint pueblo in the middle of the largest coffee plantation in Costa Rica (visit (URL HIDDEN) You feel like you are in a world apart but civilization is right next door. 2. manicured grounds and endless panoramic views. Many of the tropical flowers throughout the property bloom year 'round. 3. and blessed, quiet privacy while soaking in the balcony hot tub. Guest AccessUnlimited wireless internet is available. The full size kitchen includes a refrigerator with a large freezer plus a cooktop and oven. Interaction with GuestsMy wife and I generally stay in the Casita Blanca (the small home on the same grounds) during the months of January, February and March. During that time we will be available to interact freely with the guests. Otherwise, the neighboring family hosts the Cabina. Their son, Chistofer, speaks English. The NeighborhoodThe eastern side of Costa Rica is green all year and does not suffer from tourist fatigue. It is a more "authentic" Costa Rica with no US fast food chains or large hotels. The Caribbean coast has beautiful, sandy beaches without the tourist crowds. Turrialba is located halfway between San Jose and the Caribbean coast via the old highway (exit San Jose through Cartago). Turrialba is set in a bucolic valley and is surrounded by large sugar cane and coffee plantations. It is large enough to have a hospital and numerous doctors and dentists, some of whom speak English (we will provide references). One of the primary draws for the Turrialba area is white water rafting on the Pacuare River. The only ancient ruins in Costa Rica is located nearby in Guayabo National Park. Getting AroundNumerous guests have praised Francis for his cost effective and safe transportation. He will pick you up at the airport and deliver you directly to the cabina for only $80. You can rent his vehicle for travel in and around the Turrialba area for $60 a day. He will provide driving and guide services for an additional $20 per day. The easiest way to get to San Jose from the airport is by taxi. The taxi can drop you off at the Turrialba bus depot. There is cheap hourly bus service between San Jose and Turrialba as well as between Turrialba and the Guest Cabina in Aquiares. If you decide to rent a vehicle, four wheel drive is not required. Relatively flat all weather roads will bring you to the front door. A dedicated parking spot large enough for two vehicles is assigned to the Guest Cabina. Downtown Turrialba is only a 15 minute drive from the Guest Cabina. Other Things to NoteWhile the cabina has a full kitchen and the mini super (grocery store) is nearby, Fernanda will also prepare meals at your request. I encourage you to have at least one meal in her home with her family. It may be the most authentic experience of your entire trip to Costa Rica. Meals are not included in the rental rate but well worth the cost. Discuss any requests directly with Fernanda. Francis has a reliable SUV and will pick you up at the airport and transport you directly to the cabina ($80) and anywhere you want to visit during your stay. His car is also available for rent should you decide to drive yourself around the local area. If you want to consider this option please ask Fernanda ((PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)) or me for availability and rates. Public transportation is also available and reasonably priced. Please provide me with destination specifics if you are interested in this option. You may want to consider spending two nights if you come to run the Pacuare River. The tour operators usually leave Turrialba at 6 or 7 am and don't return until late afternoon. A good soak in the hot tub after the river run is always relaxing before sleeping to sounds of the Jesus Maria River below. If you have a hankering to live in Costa Rica, Helen and I will be happy to share our experiences during the past 11 years. If you are interesting in getting hitched in the Aquiares church we can provide the appropriate references.

If you already have decided on visiting this heaven on earth and are only concerned with the specific neighborhood in town you can skip to the section below. As a Turrialbeño myself I must admit I'm biased. This place is truly one of a kind even for Costa Rican standards. It has eluded the plague of over development seen in towns like La Fortuna and along the Northern Pacific and maintained the natural allure that seasoned travelers seek. It is halfway in-between San Jose and the Caribbean and a true adventure playground. It's home to Costa Rica's most active and largest Volcano, "Volcan Turrialba". It also hosts Rio Pacuare that has been named one of the five most beautiful rivers on the planet by NatGeo and is world renowned for it's white water rapids. Everything from canyoning, white water rafting, mountain biking, bird watching, scenic hiking, and coffee and suger cane plantation tours among other things will keep both adrenaline junkies and the easy goers satisfied. The security in Turrialba is unmatched by anywhere else in Costa Rica. It's truly a wonderful place for couples, families, and people of all ages. Turrialbeños are amazingly friendly. Turrialba is a hidden jewel that has managed to stay off the beaten path. If you want to experience the REAL Costa Rica and truly experience "no artificial ingredients" this is the place for you. "Alto Cruz" is one of the quaintest and nicest neighborhood in Turri. Residential, quiet, and walking distance to anywhere in town including local restaurants, stores, parks, and bars. There is no heavy car or foot traffic like there can be in many other parts of town. My parents live two blocks away and after spending a decade and a half in American suburbia absolutely love the neighborhood and are happily raising my younger siblings there. GETTING AROUND Turrialba is an hour and a half bus ride from San Jose. Also, a 2 hour bus ride to the Caribbean. Great central location for all your adventure needs, and the most breath taking mountainous scenery in the country. Condo is walking distance to the bus terminal. Gated car port/outdoor garage. In the heart of Turrialba close to everything, yet tucked away in a quite neighborhood. Several bus stops nearby and taxi services available as well. OTHER THINGS TO NOTE Note that this is one of four units, of which at the moment three are rented to locals. All units have direct outdoor access.

On the bank of the the Rio Colorado, this house allows one the opportunity to enjoy local attractions, such as the central farmers market, CATIE, botanical garden, white water rafting, and be in a typical tico neighbourhood . A large deck overlooks the river, a perfect setting for reading or relaxing, and at night the sound of rushing water is accompanied by frogs and night birds in the 40 foot bamboo trees lining the river. A large swimming pool and several "pulperías" are a 5 minute walk away; the town centre and all shopping a 15 minute walk. Recommended for those who want to appreciate the local culture and also have access to all tourist attractions and shopping easily

You have the newly refurbished 200 sq.mt. (1600 sq.ft.) house to yourself. Special care to preserve the original character and ambiance of the house was taken while updating the 2 full bathrooms with abundant hot water and modern plumbing, and in rebuilding the large, completely equipped kitchen. Living room, dining room and bedrooms retain the original high wooden ceilings and floors, constructed from uneven width wooden planks. 3 bedrooms sleep 5 people. Large master bedroom has a king size bed (attached twin beds with bed bridge - which can be separated upon prior request), second bedroom with queen size bed, and a third smaller bedroom with one twin size bed. If necessary, a queen sleeper sofa in the living room can sleep an additional 2 people. Turn off your cell phone, close the wooden shutters on the windows, and sleep in perfect country darkness until the rooster wakes you in the morning to enjoy your complimentary Los Titos farm grown morning coffee. You aren't taking a vacation in order to make beds and sweep up every day, so daily (weekdays) cleaning service is included. A tropical garden, developed over two generations, surrounds the house. And in the orchid garden, when in season, you can see up to 20 different species in bloom. A short forest trail provides your own private tropical botanical garden tour with multiple tropical plants and trees, and benches along the way to sit and birdwatch. If you prefer, lie in a hammock in the shade watching the dozens of bird species that frequent the garden and bird feeders all year long, or the sloth family that lives in the trees around the house. You're likely to see them almost year round. Seasonally available tropical produce from the farm include guanabana, passion fruit, plantains, cassava, Kalamanzi lemons, Tamarillo (tree tomatoes), and dehydrated miniature bananas. You are welcome to visit the coffee plantation, and during harvest season (Aug-Nov) you can grab a basket and pick coffee alongside the local residents. The farm manager and his family also live nearby on the farm, so local knowledge is always available.

We believe Turrialba is nested in the most perfect valley in Costa Rica. The bustling provincial town is surrounded by green hills and a smoking volcano almost 11'000 high -- the scenery couldn't be better. Twilight and evenings are spectacular as you gaze out enjoying the city lights. Your cabana sits at an elevation of 2700' which equates to a near perfect climate and overlooks the village below. The Turrialba Valley gives visitors many choices of places to see and activities to experience. Here is our top 10 activities to consider: 1) Raft the Pacuare River with EXPLORNATURA, our local adventure company. 2) Visit Guayabo National Archeological Park. 3) Take a tour of the Golden Bean Coffee Plantation and Mill. 4) Join a naturalist for a guided tour of CATIE - an international research facility for tropical life. 5) Dine at many fine restaurants in and around town. ANGOSTURA is our favorite. 6) Visit the Varon Club with work out facility, swimming pool and a variety of classes to energize you. 7) Sign up for Spanish School. We have two within walking distance from the bamboo cabana. 8) Be adventuresome and sign up for Canyoneering with EXPLORNATURA. You will fly through the forest canopy on 5 zip lines, cross a hanging bridge, and rappel down several waterfalls. 9) Search out with the secret map the Aquiares Waterfall, a world class swimming hole and a giant Ceiba tree (which is a Costa Rican natural monument". 10) Enjoy passing time in the town park, the center of Turrialba, and enjoy the sights, the people, and whatever presents itself!

Both of them are happy to be of any help to make your stay at Los Titos pleasant. They only speak spanish. Ramon can walk with you around the farm, for you to experience life in a working farm. The NeighborhoodThe farm is located in a safe rural area. Surrounded by nature, very peaceful. This property gives you an authentic experience of living on a small working farm. You can take walks along the country road. There is a neighboring dairy farm, along with other coffee farms and vegetable farms. Getting AroundThere is a bus stop 200 meters away along a good country road, although public transport in Costa Rica is far from European standards. Los Titos Coffee Farm is easily reached by car, no 4wd required. A rental car definitely makes it easier to reach other tourist attractions (Irazu volcano, Orosi valley, Lankester Gardens, Parque Guayabo). If doing the Pacuare river rafting, they (Explornatura) can pick up at Los Titos. A 4WD vehicle is probably a good idea if you want to explore more. The Waze app on a smart phone works exceptionally well in Costa Rica and a prepaid sim chip with internet service can be purchased on entry into the country, or I can purchase one for you and mail it to you, if given enough time. Alternatively, the Here app can be used offline after downloading the map, but it is not as accurate as Waze. Other Things to NoteLos Titos Coffee Farm has two rental properties: this Cabin and the Main House, which has a capacity for 5 people plus 2 more in the sofa bed in the living room (see separate listing). These 2 properties are rented separately, or together for larger groups. A special rate can be arranged if both properties are rented simultaenously.

The SpaceAs you can see from the photos, the home is small but cozy and warm feeling. There is a full kitchen on the north end of the home including a island/bar, a large dining table, couch with reclining seats and tv in the middle section and a propane fireplace, queen size bed and his/her closets on the southern end. The bathroom is just off the bedroom area and includes a toilet, sink and shower. Hot water is provided to the bathroom and kitchen areas. One of the highlights of the home is a large east facing balcony. The views are stupendous and you can hear the Aquiares Waterfall and watch a variety of tropical birds. We enjoy coffee and fruit every morning on this balcony. Guest AccessA modern clothes washer and propane dryer are available for long term guests (minimum one month stay). Otherwise you can request laundry service for an additional fee. Interaction with GuestsFernanda and Francis manage our cabina and live nearby. They are a wealth of information and help. If you are trying to shed a few pounds I suggest that you not visit the small bakery in their home. They will also prepare meals as requested. Eating a typical Costa Rican meal with their family provides a unique insight to the "real" Costa Rica. Getting AroundIf you plan on spending the majority of your CR visit on the Eastern side of the country we suggest that you enlist the transportation services of Francis. Door to door service between the airport and the casita is $80. He will rent his modern, well maintained and insured car for $60 a day and only add $20 to do all of the driving and guide service (a real bargain). The Caribbean beaches are about 3 hours from Aquiares and Francis can drive you down and back (it is a long day but enough heat and humidity for most people) for $80. There is inexpensive bus service between Aquiares and Turrialba. Cabs are also available but somewhat expensive. Buses are also available from San Jose to Turrialba but you need to travel very light and have an adventuresome spirit.

The lower forest canopy patio is place you'll find is quiet and serene as you have an incredible view looking out over the tropical forest canopy. Meals are served in the Bob Marley Room and on occasion at the main lodge outdoor dining room ("the terraza"). Interaction with GuestsWe believe in letting you enjoy your private space, but at the same time we want to take the mystery out of questions that might come up. We'll start by providing you with a planning packet that gives you lots of tips and information on how to make the most out of your stay. Upon your arrival you will meet your Costa Rican host, Yami Astorga. She speaks fluent Spanish and English and will give you an orientation, answer any questions you might have and be helpful with resources and ideas. She'll provide the electronic codes to access the doors and the safe for your personal belongings as well. Yami is on call if any concerns come up. You'll enjoy her great laugh and congeniality. On occasion her teenage sporty son, Aaron, will appear on his bicycle to help you out as needed. The NeighborhoodAs the crow flies we are located less than a mile from the Turrialba town plaza. From Rancho Cascadia its easy to access Turrialba and enjoy the kaleidoscope of activity, colors and patterns the urban environment serves up. It is about a 25-30 minute walk to downtown. At the same time you will be mesmerized by the fact you have found the most scenic location in the region to stay. You are at an elevation of 2,700' with perfect day time and night time temperatures. You have an unprecedented view of smokin' Volcan Turrialba which came out of dormancy in 2010. At night, from your hillside location, you look out over a sea of lights peppering the hills and lighting the urban center of Turrialba -- it is truly a magical sight. Then adjoining the south side of our property you will discover an amazing natural area preserve teeming with tropical plants, trees, wildlife, insects and birds. You really won't know the beauty we speak of until you experience it first hand. By they way, we have two outstanding Spanish schools within walking distance and a cadre of friendly neighbors. Getting AroundWe have ample and secure parking for your car should you arrive in your own vehicle. Taxis and buses abound and you will learn about them in your arrival packet. We'll give you names of our trusted cab drivers and should you be a group we'll hook you up with a mini bus or van to transport you. Also, we'll provide a list of our favorite restaurants and activities to pursue while staying with us. Other Things to NoteWe love life as most Costa Ricans do. You will hear a commonly used phrase, “pura vida” used by Costa Ricans to express a philosophy of strong community, resilience in overcoming difficulties, keeping with good spirits, enjoying life slowly, and celebrating good fortune and friends. We take pride in setting the stage for this type of culture we speak of. “Pura Vida!”.
