The security is great – this condo is one of 32 total condos in this complex. The complex is gated and locked. Also the buildings are locked all the time and alarmed at night. This unit is very safe and peaceful – however, you might just be awakened by crowing roosters (yes right in town) or barking dogs or church bells.
The gardens surrounding the buildings are maintained by a professional gardener and just beautiful. There are flowering bushes all year around. And one of the real amenities of this unit is the Sun Terrace. The terrace is totally enclosed with glass windows for weather control – yet you have wonderful views of the surrounding town and Mt. Imbabura. This is a great place to have that cup of coffee in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening and just relax and knock back.
And the climate cannot be beat. We are located only a few miles from the equator, however at an altitude of 7,800 feet – we have spring-like temperatures all the time. Many days it is sunny and bright with blue skies and you find yourself walking on the shady side of the street. Other days are overcast – but still mild. Temperatures during the day average about 75 degrees and at night it dips into the fifties – needing a sweater or light jacket. When it rains – it is usually at night – sometimes in the afternoon for twenty or thirty minutes just to clear the air. And being so close to the equator, we have twelve hours of day and twelve hours of night and never have to worry about daylight savings time.
The currency is the American Dollar – no problems with currency exchange.

Relaxing, breathing fresh air, hot springs, Otavalo indigenous market is 20 minutes away by 25-cent bus for great shopping.
Cotacachi is a wonderful little town of 8,000 friendly people nestled in a beautiful green valley between two extinct volcanoes – Volcan Imbabura and Volcan Cotacachi. The town is located in Northern Ecuador – approximately two hours north of Quito.
The town is known as the leather capital of Ecuador. Many towns in Ecuador have special skill designations and for Cotacachi – it is leather. The main street is filled with leather stores – where you can purchase just about anything made from leather – boots and shoes, purses and handbags, jackets, hats, belts and the list goes on and on.
The people are made up of two groups – the indigenous and the mestizos. The indigenous come from their Inca ancestors and have kept many of the traditions, religion and dress. The men wear white trousers and sandals and many times a small hat. The women wear floor length wrap-around skirts and sandals. They also wear a head covering and many strands of necklaces. These are the farming people of the community. The mestizos lean more towards modernization – wearing jeans and tennis shoes. They drive cars, own businesses, have cell phones and for the most part attend the Catholic Church. Getting AroundYes, the bus is safe and easy and CHEAP! $2.50 to airport or Quito. 25-75 cents to neighboring towns. Cabs and private minivans can also be arranged very affordably.
Everything is near by – you can walk everywhere to the restaurants, banks and shops. You don’t need a car. And if you need a taxi – they are only a dollar anywhere in Cotacachi. And bus fares are reasonable also – if you want to go to Otavalo – site of South America’s largest open air market – the fare is only 25 cents for a five or six mile trip – and to Ibarra to the shopping malls – it is only 45 cents for about a 20 mile trip.
