The SpaceLa Granja is an original farmhouse, so it is rustic. Our farm is organic, so there are some insects, especially since it sits amidst natural tropical forest. The farmhouse itself is surrounded by gardens and tall fruit trees, with various types of fowl adorning the patios (they can be noisy at times). The antique home has traditional tall ceilings, original wood and construction, and open spaces, so you feel as if you were living as farmers lived many years ago, yet with all the amenities and comforts of a home - telephone, FREE WIFI/INTERNET, hot water shower, stove, fridge, fully-equipped large kitchen. It is right by the river so you can see and hear the rush of the water the entire time you are there - a natural sound that induces relaxation and a state of well-being.
There are also two bedrooms (full and twin beds in the style of bunk beds in each of the two bedrooms) with a connected balcony. In the living/dining room, there is a futon that sleeps two additional guests. We provide you with towels and linens. There is 1 bathroom.
We also have a grill on the property that you can use. We provide you with free wood for burning.
There are two rescued kitties that live in the barn nearby and that spend a lot of time in the open air spaces of this home, in particular the living room and dining room. If you are allergic to cats and do not enjoy cats, please choose Rancho el Rio or Panorama instead. These homes are also on the same property and are near the river.
We also have rescued dogs that are super friendly and run around the farm. They do not enter the house, but like to hang out. Guest AccessLa Granja is a 112-acre unique combination of nature and a farm with animals and crops. You get it all: the whole house, over one mile of river front with natural pools, forested trails, mountains with beautiful ocean views, cattle pastures, orchards, and of course, lots of trees, such as palm/coconut trees, bananas, plantains, noni, starfruit, breadfruit, oranges, grapefruit, lemons, passionfruit, mangoes, avocados, cashews, and more! Interaction with GuestsLa Granja and its sister homes, Rancho el Rio (on the same 112-acre property), Casa Cielo and Casa Inspiracion, are special rental cabins that fund the animal welfare, environmental protection, and social justice programs that their owners run at the Sustainability Demonstration Center located along the main route to Monteverde. We invite all our guests to visit the Sustainability Demonstration Center free of charge.

For each week-long stay, you get one night off. The NeighborhoodIn this area of the country, people still ride horses to work and get around, use oxen to cart things from place to place and raise cattle... this is the real Costa Rica. There is a tiny restaurant-bar nearby or you can drive 3 km. to a much larger restaurant at the intersection of route 606 and 605. You can also support the local economy by buying local, organic food and homemade meals (delivered right to your doorstep) from our neighbors through our food order form.
The weather is a magnificent! It is warmer than Monteverde, but not as hot as the beach. You can see a lot of different wildlife at the ranch property, including howler monkeys, iguanas, geckos, salamanders, frogs, tons of birds (herons, birds of prey, parrots, egrets, songbirds, toucans, etc.). At night you can build bonfires by the river and even camp there just for fun!
There is a TON of things to do. You can help milk the cow, feed the chickens, geese, turkeys, and fish, and tend to and ride the horses, see the sheep, water buffaloes and oxen. The river itself provides hours of FUN. Children (and adults!) love to jump off rocks into natural pools and wade around the river looking at the fish and finding beautiful rocks and tiny creatures.
At our nearby Sustainability Demonstration Center, you can check out our traditional Costa Rican outdoor games, such as our homemade mechanical bull and other equestrian games. There is even a mini-zipline for children!
Collecting and eating coyoles (tiny coconut-like fruits that you crack with rocks) and other fruits to make fruit drinks is quite popular too. Night or daytime hikes by foot or on horse through the ranch and the surrounding town are a true delight. We have mountain bikes for rent for those who love cycling.
