The NeighborhoodCranham House and Coastal Barn stands in its own setting in beautiful countryside, with woods and hills of outstanding natural beauty. It is a short walk from the garden (about 20 mins) to the beach at Welcombe Mouth on the North Devon/Cornwall coast. It is part of the parish of Hartland and Welcombe is just a valley away. Welcombe itself has a small fine church, great pub and a community run shop. The whole area is called the Hartland Peninsula and is just a network of green lanes, farms and tucked away houses with the Atlantic ocean an ever present influence on all our lives. The woods are carpeted with bluebells in Spring and the succession of wild flowers in Summer is breathtaking. The sense of space and freedom to roam along foot paths and on the magnificent stretches of the coastal path, (south to Morwenstow and Bude; north to Hartland Quay and Point), cannot be rivalled. Perhaps, it is only the Highlands of Scotland or the deep interior of Wales which can match it for a sense of British wilderness. The nearest towns are Bude (15 miles) and Bideford (20 miles). Clovelly is about 10 miles away and Hartland is 9 miles from us. The surfing beaches are too numerous to mention. Water sports of all kinds are available. There is an excellent riding stables near by and private equestrian facilities including beach riding is available in Welcombe itself. There are golf courses in Bude and Westward Ho! (the oldest links course in England). Cycling along the quiet green lanes of the Hartland Peninsula is a joy and virtually traffic free. Of course, there is always the option of doing nothing. Of sitting on the beach and completely chilling out with nothing more strenuous than a book and a picnic. Getting AroundPublic transport is not extensive. There is a bus service between Bude and Hartland each day although you would need to be taken to the picking up point at Welcombe Cross. If you come here to walk the coastal path we do offer lifts to starting points and pick ups at the end of the day as well as luggage transfer on to your next destination after your visit with us (a minimum of 3 nights). Foreign guests can fly in to the nearest airport at Bristol and hire a car to get to us. There is a very detailed description of how to get to us on the website. Other Things to NoteIf, like us, you appreciate peace and quiet and the joys of natural beauty then this is the place for you. Don't come if a daily shopping fix is your thing. The landscape is glorious. The sea is magnificent. And, the welcome will be warm.

Hartland is a lovely place to visit. Our cottage is located on the side of a valley. We have an orchard, paddock, and ancient woodland that guests are welcome to walk around. Our nearest neighbour is on the opposite side of the valley. It all makes a lovely, peaceful setting. The perfect place for getting away from the hustle and bustle of modern life! Very little light pollution means that the cottage is great for star gazing. You feel as though you can almost touch the stars. We are located very close to the stunning Devon coastline. There is a lovely trail that leads down to Mouth Mill Beach, a distance of just over a kilometre. Hartland is a fantastic place to visit, and is a walker's paradise. Hartland resides inside an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty: part of the UNESCO North Devon Biosphere. There many contrasting environments nearby, with four Sites of Special Scientific Interest: ancient woodlands, moorland, and heath. The cottage allows easy access to the South West Coast Path, which follows some of the most stunning coastline in the UK. We can arrange for collection and drop off of luggage for walkers exploring the path in stages. The area is synonymous with smuggling, and many ships were wrecked off the jagged shoreline. Hartland Lighthouse and The Wreckers Museum can be found along the coast path. There are also many other local walks and heritage trails nearby. Indeed, Hartland is part of the "Walkers Are Welcome" network of towns and villages. Our quiet country lanes are ideal for walking or cycling. Hartland itself is a quiet, rural village with a long history. For the modern traveller, there is a small shop, post office (with cash machine inside), doctors' surgery, vets, fish & chip shop, and several pubs. For the more artistically inclined, the village has numerous artisans: potteries, art gallery, wood carving, and photographer. Close by is St. Nectan's Church, Hartland Abbey, Lavender Tea Rooms, Docton Mill, and the Wreckers' Retreat, where you can enjoy a meal and drink whilst watching the fantastic sight of Atlantic rollers crashing onto the rugged coastline. There are plenty of fine inns and restaurants in the locality, so you definitely won't go hungry. Almost on our doorstep is the world re-known village of Clovelly, with its steep cobbled streets seemingly frozen in time. Just off the coast lies Lundy Island, England's only Marine Nature Reserve. The island can by visited in the summer months by passenger ferry, or otherwise by helicopter. The cottage makes an ideal base for exploring North Devon and Cornwall, located only a couple of miles from the Devon / Cornwall border. The Atlantic Highway is only a ten minute drive away. This allows easy access to the ancient maritime port of Bideford, Barnstaple, and Bude; the Atlantic Village shopping outlet; children's attractions such as The Big Sheep, Milky Way, and Funder Zone; Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks; and other attractions such as the Eden Project. Need I go on? You won't find yourself with nothing to do whilst visiting us! Getting AroundDue to our rural setting, the best way to get here and explore the area is by car. Hartland is easily accessed by the M5 motorway, A361 crossing by Exmoor National Park, and the A39 Atlantic Highway. There is a bus service between Hartland, Bideford, Barnstaple and Bude. However the service is somewhat infrequent. Barnstaple can be reached by National Express coaches and by rail via the First Great Western rail network. We can organise collection and drop off of guests in Barnstaple who wish to travel here that way. The nearest regional airports are Exeter (71 miles) and Bristol (104 miles). The M4 motorway enables easy travel to the south west from Heathrow International Airport (218 miles). Other Things to NoteDuring the main holiday season (Easter to October), the cottage is let on a weekly basis - Saturday to Saturday. Short breaks may be considered in this period for Late Availability. Short breaks are available between November and March, with greater flexibility over changeover days too. Please do contact us regarding dates and pricing. Unfortunately, the generic pricing systems on websites mean that we cannot always show the exact price for your stay. Guests will have access to the entire property including the patio. The garden area is shared with the other chalets; they should therefore be respectful of other guests privacy. There is one dedicated parking space in a shared car park. We do our own cleaning and maintenance and are often there to welcome our guests in. As we live in the village, we often call in to meet our guests, in person, if we haven't met them on arrival. This is a remote part of North Devon and only a mile from the Cornish border. The scenery is stunning and if you want peace and quiet, this is the place for you. As well as the pub there is a community shop/post office in the village, with limited opening hours, which offers a pre-ordering delivery service for your arrival. Online grocery orders can be ordered from Sainsbury's, Tesco, Waitrose and Asda. There is also a small working pottery in the village. The beach is a mile and a half away and has a small free car park. It can be accessed on foot, down a lane, through a wooded valley. There is a stretch of sand at low tide with pebbles and rock pools. The coast path is easily accessible and the next valley south marks the Devon/Cornwall border. This valley has an extensive nature reserve, with a network of footpaths. Further afield there are sandy beaches near Kilkhampton and at Bude with life guards on duty during the summer. There are several small shops including a Co op and a butcher, 3 takeaways, 2 cafes and 2 pubs in Kilkhampton. Bude has a lot of restaurants and shops, including 4 supermarkets. Going north there are the market towns of Bideford and Barnstaple and a long sandy beach at Westward Ho. There are several children's attractions locally, a bowling alley and swimming pools. Places that might be of interest include Tintagel, Boscastle, The Milky Way, The Big Sheep, The Gnome Reserve, Docton Mill Gardens, Clovelly, Hartland Abbey, Hartland Quay, Dartington Crystal and Rosemoor RHS Gardens. Dartmoor, Bodmin and Exmoor are all easily reached for a day, as are Eden and Heligan. There is even a small, independently run, cinema just south of Bude that shows all the current films. There is virtually no public transport, so a car is essential. There is one dedicated parking space. A limited bus service runs along the A39, but this is 2½ miles away. The nearest railway station is around 26 miles away at Barnstaple. The nearest main line station is over 60 miles away at either Exeter or Tiverton. The nearest airports are at Exeter and Newquay. Coaches run from Exeter to Bude. We are open all year and accept bookings of a minimum of 3 nights out of season. However, between mid March and the end of October we normally only accept whole week bookings. We get booked up very quickly, so if you are interested in a particular time, it's best to book as soon as you are able to. Guest AccessThe entire property. Interaction with GuestsWe live close by and are available to offer assistance much of the time. We are contactable by phone. The NeighborhoodWelcombe is a lovely rural village on the North Devon coast only a mile from the Cornish border.
