This is a town with an international reputation for the world's greatest rowing regatta, the 'joie de vivre' of the summer arts festival plus 80's music fest Rewind to measure up to. And Henley respects tradition. A 12th century South Oxfordshire market town, Henley's historic heart sits a few strides from the river Thames. The main street has many Georgian frontages covering older buildings and among the 300 buildings within the town designated 'of special architectural or historical interest' are St Mary's church, the town hall, market place and Henley Bridge. Pick up '10 Brilliant things to do', the Henley Environment Trail, the 'Henley Trail' the Henley Town Map or the Visit Midsomer - Southern Trail leaflets to provide more inspiration. Henley's riverside location – surrounded by a Chiltern landscape of wooded hills and green fields – lends itself to relaxation, long lunches and power shopping. There's a pub where Charles I drank, a Chantry house, a butcher that smokes his own bacon and shops still offering a personal touch. This is a town dedicated to enjoying the river. So bring a picnic, pick up a copy of Wind in the Willows and settle for an hour on the waterfront. Watch others messing about on the river, or hire a boat and join in the fun – the summer straw boater and stripy blazer combo is optional. Claim to Fame: The Royal Regatta and Music and Arts Festival are established highlights of the English social season and give Henley an international reputation but did you know that both Dusty Springfield and George Harrison lived in Henley-upon-Thames until their untimely deaths? Five things to do in Henley on Thames: Visit the River and Rowing Museum – and greet statues of two great Olympians Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Matthew Pinsent Go rowing or take a boat trip – enjoy the famous regatta course relaxing on a river cruise or energetically in a rowing boat all with one of Henley's oldest companies, Hobbs of Henley or if you want a a one-off Henley Rowing Experience try The Henley Rowing Association - beginners welcome! Walk along the Thames Path – the route to Hambleden lock is 2.5 miles long or take a guided tour around the town. Attend a performance at Kenton Theatre - one of the oldest performing theatres in the country Take afternoon tea – a perfect brew teamed with either scones and jam or a slice of cake Four things to do near Henley on Thames: Stonor Park - home of Lord and Lady Camoys, one of England's oldest manor houses has a fine collection of contemporary ceramics Grey's Court – National Trust run 16th-century mansion and tranquil gardens with outstanding 18th century plasterwork The Herb Garden – specialist Herb nursery and Saxon Maze with a mile of curving grass pathways Nuffield Place - visit the time-capsule home of the philanthropist William Morris, Lord Nuffield, the founder of Morris Motor Cars and one of the richest men in the world. What's on in Henley on Thames: Henley could easily be renamed Festival-on-Thames for the number and variety of annual arts, sports and traditional events hosted in and around the town. Each summer 'Henley Reach' sees the world's elite rowers compete at the Royal Regatta. They are cheered on by spectators enjoying the sport, the champagne and the strawberries. Enclosure dress code is strictly enforced yet non-enclosure spectators can equally soak up the occasion and encourage the crews. It's free to watch from the riverside so pick your spot well. Henley Festival of Music and Arts attracts some of the world´s top entertainers to perform on a floating stage in front of a dinner-jacketed audience. Mixing classical, jazz and popular music, the festival also includes exhibitions of art and sculpture. Remember to also look out for the fabulous Henley Fringe where many performers hone their acts for Edinburgh; Henley Literary Festival one of the preeminent festivals on the circuit, attracting a host of famous authors, and the 80's Rewind Festival.

A complimentary bottle of Prosecco for stays of 3+ nights Henley on Thames is one of the most beautiful towns in England, recently voted by The Times as one of the best places to live in the English countryside and a regular winner of RHS Britain in Bloom medals. Henley’s riverside location, surrounded by a Chiltern landscape of wooded hills and green fields, lends itself to relaxation, long lunches and quirky shopping. There’s a pub where Charles I drank, a Chantry house, a butcher that smokes his own meat and independent shops still offering the personal touch. But it’s not just beautiful, Henley knows how to throw a party. It has an international reputation earned over 175 years by the world’s greatest rowing regatta, Henley Royal Regatta the town splashes out with the ‘joie de vivre’ of the summer arts festival and gets into the groove with ’80’s music festival Rewind. In fact Henley is a town of festivals offering a series of world class events to delight visitors and residents alike, you’ll find details of all of them on this site. Henley’s historic heart sits just a few strides from the River Thames. The main street has many Georgian frontages covering older buildings and among the 300 buildings within the town designated ‘of special architectural or historical interest’ are St Mary’s Church, the Town Hall, Market Place and the 18th Century stone bridge. If you’re hungry or thirsty or just wish to enjoy the ambience of the town the paved market place offers a number of cafes offering outside seating while in the compact town centre there are numerous refreshment opportunities including locally run tea shops and cafes plus a host of well know restaurants and wonderful pubs some of whom brew their own ale. Further afield there are award winning restaurants and pubs in many of the surrounding villages. Fundamentally Henley on Thames is a town dedicated to enjoying the river. So bring a picnic, pick up a copy of The Wind in the Willows, rent a deckchair and settle for an hour or two at Mill Meadows the pleasant park situated close to the station, just a brief walk from the town centre. Or get on the river yourself to indulge in the full beauty of the location by hiring a boat or joining one of the regular scheduled trips.

The SpacePLEASE READ the 'Other Things to Note' section. Guest AccessFront door key supplied. Use of the kitchen, bathroom and lounge. Interaction with GuestsI'm a friendly guy who is quite used to hosting guests and I'm happy to help in anyway I can. The NeighborhoodTwyford is a nice small town in the country. It has a large Waitrose supermarket, a small Tesco Express, 4 pubs, 3 Indian restaurants and a Thai and an Italian. There's also 2 Chinese take-aways and a Costa coffee. Getting AroundVery close to Twyford train station. Unfortunately this means that the available parking in the road can be quite tight first thing in the morning and late at night due to commuters. There's usually somewhere available but arriving during the day is a better bet. Other Things to NoteBreakfast - some eat it; some don't. With everyone's different expectations and tastes I've decided not to try to cover all the possibilities and keep the room price low. There's no reason to go hungry with all the shops and cafes in the town. Feel free to arrive with stuff that you want to refrigerate and make basic use of the kitchen facilities. Coffee and tea is always available and complimentary. The actual room doubles as my home office so depending on how busy I am with work will affect my ability to host. It is likely that I will need access to the room during the day for work so it is most suited to those that will be occupied elsewhere during the daylight hours and simply require rest in the evening and a night's sleep. The advantage of being so close to the train station also brings the disadvantage of some train noise. The train line is concealed at the bottom of an embankment at the end of the garden and whilst no-one has ever stated that it has affected their stay I feel I must mention that train traffic will be heard to some degree. My place is a 2 level maisonette with access to my floor via a stairway. Unfortunately this means it may be unsuitable for some disabled guests.

If you are staying for a few days, it’s worth looking at Visit Henley website's calendar of the main events and festivals, or the Henley Standard website. There’s often live music on at the Bandstand by the river over the summer. My favourite pubs: The Bull on Bell Street, The Little Angel, The Anchor (all three of these do great gastropub-type food). The Argyll is a more traditional pub and also does great food. If the weather is nice, the pub garden of The Angel on The Bridge is also great for a drink right by the river. Best pub gardens: The Bull on Bell Street, The Little Angel, The Angel on the Bridge, The Argyll Best Sunday Roast: The Row Barge (book ahead!) Best for real ale: The Bird in Hand (very traditional pub – I love it in here!), Lovibonds brewery (open Fri/Sat/Sun only) Best for a quiet drink/cocktails: Hotel Du Vin Takeaway There’s a proper chippy round the corner (down Friday Street towards the river), although Smarts fish and chip shop (a 10-minute walk up Reading road) has the best fish by a mile – there are queues out the door on a Friday night! Restaurants Pachangas – great Mexican on the corner across the street The Giggling Squid is a great Thai restaurant, and the Thai Orchid on the same street is good too Café le Raj, great Indian a few doors down (also does takeaway) The Square in Market place is slightly pricier but does amazing Portugese food Villa Marina is a fantastic Italian place …. And if all else fails, you can’t go wrong with Pizza Express! Things to do There is a market every Thursday The Regal Picturehouse is a great little cinema with a bar so you can take drinks into the film, or there’s the Kenton Theatre for plays (I’ve never been) Staying on this side of the river, there’s a nice walk along the Thames up to Marsh Lock, which takes about 20 minutes each way. If you cross over the bridge to the other side and follow the river round the other direction, the approx. 1-hour walk to Hambleden Lock is lovely (If you fancy a pint before heading back, The Flower Pot in Aston is great and has a massive pub garden). Getting AroundAn approximate 3-minute walk from Henley train station. Other Things to NoteWhen you are checking out, post the keys back through the letterbox and drop me a text to let me know you’ve gone. Hopefully we’ll have arranged the approximate check-in and check-out timings in advance – if you keep me posted of your plans, I will try to be as flexible as possible – the only exception would be if I have guests in the day before/after, in which case check in is 2pm and check out 12pm.
