The SpaceThe West Wing (during the conversion we hadn't decided on a final use for this part of the house so we called it the West Wing and it has stuck) is a very spacious and characterful ground floor double room overlooking a pretty courtyard. The West Wing has an en-suite with shower and bath. Although entry is via the shared front door your room is then on its own at the west of the building, linked to the kitchen by a short glass walkway. While I have not ticked the "child friendly" box it is only because the room has only a double bed. If you have a baby/toddler and have a travel cot that should not be a problem. Do let us know when you book. It is in a converted barn situated in private 10 acre grounds recently planted with some woodland which you are welcome to explore. The country view is wonderful and we are in the middle of a good walking route (across "The Langton Caudle" ). It is home to Bird on the Hand falconry experiences so we have a host of birds of prey to look at. Our nearest neighbours are half a mile away so we have a very peaceful location. Guest AccessYou are welcome to shared use of our large kitchen. Breakfast cereal, fruit and toast or croissants are provided and if you prefer something else, just let us know and we can do some shopping and maybe even some cooking depending on our schedule for the day. There are some excellent local pubs and restaurants. Ample parking, secure cycle storage and free Wifi connection. Interaction with GuestsMy wife Evelyn and I look forward to welcoming guests and hope they will happily share our home. I work from home doing falconry experience days and Evelyn is a lecturer hoping to retire soon. The NeighborhoodWe are 4 miles from Market Harborough and 13 miles from Leicester with easy access to all the local attractions, including Rutland Water, Foxton Locks, The Space Centre and Eyebrook Reservoir with lots of opportunities for walking, cycling, boating and fishing. We also have birds of prey which you may visit or you could book for a falconry session during your stay with us. Details of the falconry can be found on the web just search for Bird On The Hand falconry Leicestershire. Getting AroundWe are 10 - 15 minutes from Market Harborough station which is on the London to Leeds, Midland Mainline route. Twelve miles from Leicester with a bus route 10 minutes walk. If we are available we can help with transport. Other Things to NoteAlthough we have a couple of dogs they are outside dogs so allergy sufferers should have no problem.

Why not take a stay on my beautiful 60 ft Narrow boat Peewit completely refitted with all the comforts of home, whilst floating on the Northampton and Leicester Line of the Grand Union Canal. Peewit is cruised all year round on the Northampton arm and the Leicester line of the Grand Union Canal. Where you stay will depend from one week to another along this route, but always within a 20 mile radius of the village of Market Harborough. Please note that Peewit is let static moored, and not for cruising. The Leicester Line of the Grand Union Canal takes a quiet, meandering course through rolling hills and unspoilt countryside. The Northampton Arm leaves the Grand Union Canal mainline at Gayton Junction and joins the River Nene in the centre of Northampton. Foxton Locks is a well-known waterways landmark in a green and rural location. The ten locks are often busy with narrowboats, while the side-ponds, which provide water to the flight, are havens for nature. They have thriving reed beds, where you can often spot herons, and occasionally rare water voles. The Foxton Inclined Plane is a unique bit of waterways history – a boat lift that once raised and lowered working boats on a steep slope in water-filled tanks. The Leicester Line has arms to Market Harborough and Welford. At Union Wharf in Market Harborough, red-brick industrial warehouses have been transformed into arts and crafts workshops, creating a hive of cultural activity. Days out Enjoy a grand family day out at Foxton Locks, an area brimming with history, wildlife and scenic waterside walks. History What is now called the 'Leicester Line' comprised two canals which were bought by the Grand Junction Canal in 1894: the Leicestershire & Northamptonshire Union Canal and the 'old' Grand Union Canal. The Leicestershire & Northamptonshire Union Canal was promoted to continue the waterway to Market Harborough and Northampton, where it would meet the River Nene and the planned branch from the Grand Junction Canal at Gayton.By 1797, when construction had only reached Gumley Debdale, the money had been used up. More was raised in 1805, and the canal got to Market Harborough four years later. Meanwhile, the Grand Junction Canal from London to Braunston had opened. Alternative routes for joining the two canals were discussed and it was decided that a separate company to be called the 'Grand Union Canal' should be formed to make the link. (It is now often referred to as the 'old' Grand Union, to distinguish it from the canal of the same name created in 1929 when the Grand Junction merged with several other canals.) This opened from Norton Junction to Foxton in 1814, providing a direct route from the East Midlands coalfield and industrial towns to London.Never prosperous, railway competition from the 1840s meant declining revenues, which led to reductions in maintenance. When in the early 1890s the Grand Junction was looking to revive the East Midlands trade, the two companies were very willing to be bought out, so in 1894 the Grand Junction paid £6,500 for the LΝ and £10,500 for the 'old' Grand Union — the better price for the latter probably reflecting the value of its reservoirs rather than its canal. The Grand Junction rectified the arrears of maintenance, dredged their new purchases, and built the inclined plane at Foxton, bypassing the ten locks and speeding the passage of the boats. A further inclined plane was planned to bypass Watford Locks but was never built. It was all too late: traffic grew slightly, but not by enough to make working Foxton incline economic, and in 1910 it was closed and traffic reverted to using the locks. You see me on the arrival day of hire and when I return when you wish to leave the boat. All the relevant boat licensing and mooring fees are included in the day and weekly rates. All Coal, kindling and gas is supplied for your stay. Northamptonshire "the rose of shires" Naturally beautiful countryside, truly a great place to visit. All I ask is that you enjoy your stay and leave our narrowboat as you found it, for others to enjoy.

When in the early 1890s the Grand Junction was looking to revive the East Midlands trade, the two companies were very willing to be bought out, so in 1894 the Grand Junction paid £6,500 for the L&NU and £10,500 for the 'old' Grand Union — the better price for the latter probably reflecting the value of its reservoirs rather than its canal.
