The SpaceI have two cats. One is beautiful, but he may bite so best admired from afar. Guest AccessLounge/ dining room/ kitchen (This is all open plan) plus the conservatory and the small enclosed garden. Interaction with GuestsI am happy to make myself scarce if that is preferable or tell you about Romsey, where I live and Winchester, where I used to live. I have cards and a selection of board games and am happy to make up the numbers if you'd like to play. The NeighborhoodI love Romsey. It is a quaint little town. I believe that the population is 25 000. The town centre is nicely compact and has Aldi and Waitrose. We also have a few historic buildings, most notably the Abbey Getting AroundThere is a bus stop at the top of my road and a train station about 25 minutes walk away. Other Things to NoteI ask for quite late check-in and early check-out but I may be able to manage much better times. It depends on my schedule, so please do ask.

Welcome to John's Barn. The barn has just been converted to a holiday home (finished in May 2015). It is set in the very peaceful location of Coopers Clump. John and Bobbie Middleton have lived at Coopers Clump since their marriage (a long time ago) and they have run a thriving nursery now retired, (they wish!) John's Barn has been converted from the former shed for potting plants, storing tools and tractors to a (dare we say it – beautiful) open plan barn. The barn was planned by an architect to be open-plan living and there are no walls between the entrance, kitchen, dining area and living area and lots of lovely glazing with great views of the outdoors. There are three double bedrooms (two are set as twin rooms), a bathroom and a shower-room. The downstairs bedroom has a walk in shower room opposite so it is ideal for any guests with limited mobility. John and Bobbie welcome guests to come and enjoy the very private home they have enjoyed for many years. There is a large lake, originally dug out by John to irrigate the plants, which is now well stocked with friendly and well fed carp which you are welcome to fish, or feed‌. There are over 50 acres of land to explore, including footpath trails leading to Embley Park, former home of Florence Nightingale. The woodland setting is a haven for wildlife, there are plenty of deer, rabbits, badgers, squirrels, pheasants and many birds, including herons (on the lake) that you will encounter! The location is also a great base for exploring further afield to the New Forest, the Solent, historic towns of Winchester, Salisbury, Southampton and Portsmouth. Also we are about 5 mins from the ridiculously popular Peppa Pig World! John's Barn is set in a unique rural location, with the private woodland, fields and lake making it truly unique. You could easily spend the day on the property without leaving it. The barn offers great modern accommodation and has been equipped to a high standard.

The SpaceOur house is a charming barn conversion, with pine flooring and bright white walls through out. The house's layout is contemporary, with an open plan farmhouse kitchen and eating area. The living room has a wood burning stove at it's centre. There are well stocked book shelves and old school board games to enjoy. The house is decorated with a quirky collection of original art works. It is a colourful, airy and relaxed home in a very peaceful setting. The largest bedroom is in the attic. It is a lovely room, bright and spacious. The staircase leading to it is a paddle or alternating step staircase. If you are not used to one, it can feel a bit steep when descending it, so please look at the pictures to see it first. The other bedrooms are a double and single, both on the ground floor. There are two bathrooms. One with a shower and one with a bath, both with W.C.s. The garden is wonderful. It was a labour of love designed and tended to by Harry's mother. She was a prize winning florist in her time, and when she retired, the garden became her life's work. The results are wonderful, and we are gradually restoring it to its former glory. Please feel free to explore the 4.5 acre garden, full of places to sit, picnic, or relax in. It consists of a mature formal garden, beyond which is an open lawn leading to a private lake. The lake is frequented by kingfishers, nesting ducks, herons and egrets. We also get visited by glow worms from time to time, which is very exciting. The lake is a great spot to sit around at dawn or dusk for birdsong. At one end of the lake is an impressive bamboo grove ideal for hide and seek. Guest AccessThe Guest rooms have fresh linen and towels provided. There is plenty of wardrobe space, desks, and chairs. There is also wifi through out. Guests are more than welcome to roam the property. The gardens are secluded and peaceful, and wonderful to be alone in. Guests are welcome to enjoy the tranquility of it and wonder as is their want. We encourage you to feel at home. There is tea and coffee always available. There is a microwave and electric stove. The dining area is sun drenched in the evenings and a perfect spot to plan your day trips and holiday itinerary from. There are two bathrooms, one with a shower and one with a bath. There is also washing machine. There is also parking space for three cars as you enter the property. Interaction with GuestsWe do not live locally, but often stay near by. If we are there, we will meet you at the property when you arrive and show you around. Otherwise, we will leave the keys in a safe place for you to pick up and deposit back at the end of your stay. The NeighborhoodSherfield English is a tiny village with a pub, post office and garage. It is nestled close to the market town of Romsey. Famous inhabitants have included Florence Nightingale. She is buried locally at St Margaret of Antioch, which is a pleasant walk away. Local Amenities: The local pub 'The Hatchet' less than a 5 minute walk away, and has an excellent reputation for good food. It is a popular family pub with locals, and has a secure garden with a children's play area. For breakfasts, teas and cake, there is Gilbert's Nursery less than 5 minutes walk in the other direction. It is particularly popular on the weekends. Lots of cyclist groups use it as a regular pit stop on their weekend rides. Breakfast (and fishing) is also available at Dandy's Ford Fishing and Tea Rooms (0.7 miles). Kimbridge (4 mils) is the local speciality farm shop with amazing treats; and a restaurant and cafe. For something more formal, 'The Blue Hays' (2 miles) is a local restaurant that has a solid reputation for traditional food and has been in business since the 1960's. Sherfield English village shop (0.8 miles) is good for last minute things, or the post office. There is finally, the fabulous Shootash Car Boot Sale (2 miles) every Saturday morning, if that's your tipple. Surrounding us, you've got Romsey, Salibury, and Winchester, The New Forest, Broadlands, Mottisfont Abbey, Wilton House, and a host of Neolithic sites to visit. There are quintessentially English villages such as Stockbridge, and wonderful churches and footpaths to explore. Romsey (4 miles) is our local market town. The food markets run on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday. The farmers Market. 1st Sunday of the month. There is a huge country show held at Broadlands on the edge of the town. It's once a year, on the 12th of September. There is also a host of small cafes, restaurants and shops; and an Art Deco theatre which hosts local productions. New Forest. (3 miles) The New Forest with its famous and ancient woodland with its knotted trees, huge mossy oaks and marshy expanses populated by wild horses which roam free across it. You can explore it by hiring a horse; cycling, or walking. The area is littered with historic villages. Lymington is the site of Buckland Rings Iron Age hill fort. The Rufus Stone near Minstead marks the spot King William II fell in 1100AD. The New Forest Folk Festival is a wonderful annual event; and there is the New Forest Country Show in July. Salisbury (9 miles). Salisbury is my favourite town. The cathedral is fantastic. It has not lost any of its original impact despite the town's growth around it. You can see the Magna Carta; listen to the choral singing; or get tours of the various points of interest. The town itself is charming, and bustling. There is a farmers and artisan market, a plethora of shops, cafes, an art centre, theatre and National Trust houses to visit. The 1950's cafe upstairs in the antique centre is great for tea and cake; and The Boston is good for generous sized food. Winchester (15 miles). Winchester is charming. It has weekly antiques and bric-a brac markets, as well as a street food markets. You can visit Winchester Cathedral, the Gurkha Museum, Wolvesey Castle, or Marwell Wildlife Centre. Winchester is a cultural hub, with its Art College and schools. There are plenty of festivals hosted there, including the Chamber Music Festival, Hampshire Food Festival; and Winchester hat fair amongst others. Nearby Ancient Monuments. Danebury Fort, and Old Sarum Iron Age Fort are about 14 miles away. Danebury Fort is especially atmospheric. Its high up position allows you to see seven other hill fort settlements surrounding it. For a good day trip, Stone Henge is only 20 miles away. Avebury Stone Circle, Silbury hill and the Rideway are all about 40 miles away. Getting AroundThe best way, is to explore the area is by car. We are just off the Salisbury Rd (A27), 3 miles from Romsey and absolutely surrounded by places of interest. We are right in between Salisbury and Winchester, so equally easy to access from either town. Country buses being what they are, I recommend that if you are coming by public transport, it is worth planning carefully around it. Bike riding is also really popular in the area. There are plenty of weekend cycling groups locally. There is a public footpath along the side of the house from which you can cycle directly into the New Forest without going onto main roads, in about 40 min. It is 7 miles (11 km) northwest of Southampton, 11 miles (18 km) southwest of Winchester and 17 miles (27 km) Southeast of Salisbury. and lies on the River Test, which is known for fly fishing, predominantly trout. The Abbey Church of St Mary and St Ethelflaeda can trace its origins back to 907 AD, the year in which King Edward the Elder, son of the Saxon King Alfred the Great, first settled some nuns here under the charge of his daughter Elflaeda. The first stone church and nunnery were built c. 1000 AD and flourished as a place of education for the daughters of kings and noblemen. The Abbey remains the largest parish church in Hampshire. Florence Nightingale was born on 12 May 1820 into a rich, upper-class, well-connected British family at the Villa Colombaia, in Florence, Italy. The family moved back to England in 1821, with Nightingale being brought up in the family's homes at Embley, near Romsey. She died 13th August 1910 and is buried in the churchyard of St Margaret's Church, East Wellow, near Romsey. In the Nineteenth century and In addition to ministering to his Romsey parish, the Reverend Edward Berthon, ran a boatbuilding and engineering enterprise. In 1877, he started his company within the view of Romsey Abbey, building the famous Berthon Folding Lifeboats. Romsey was home of the 20th-century soldier and statesman The Earl Mountbatten of Burma, the 19th-century British prime minister Lord Palmerston, and the 17th-century philosopher and economist William Petty. Recently unveiled by Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, the famous War Horse Memorial sits proudly at the entrance to the Memorial Park by the River Test. This was commissioned and funded by the people of Romsey as a tribute to about 110,000 of the 1.3 million horses and mules involved in the First World War passed through a giant military depot on the outskirts of Romsey before going to Southampton to go to the battle front in northern France. This is a must see for anyone staying in or near Romsey. Romsey is twinned with Paimpol in Brittany, France, and Battenberg, Germany. Getting AroundRomsey is ideally situated to visit the delights and secrets of Hampshire. Romsey evolved as a market town and today lively street markets are held in The Cornmarket on Tuesdays, Fridays & Saturdays. The SpaceMy double bedroom is small and cosy in a quaint house that is part of the 18th century complex around an old watermill - Sadlers Mill, which is a local beauty spot. It is very quiet but the sound of the river (and its wildlife) is always there. Guest AccessGuests will have access to the shower room and toilet at the end of the hall which is mostly private. The sitting room and kitchen will be shared with me (but please note access to the kitchen is only for eating the breakfast I provide: I do not allow guests to cook their own food there). My study, between the sitting room and kitchen, is private. Interaction with GuestsThis room is in my home so I expect to meet and greet guests and tell them about the local area. The NeighborhoodRomsey is close to countryside and town. It is approx. 6 miles from the New Forest, 12 miles from the cathedral city of Winchester, about 10 miles from the port of Southampton. Romsey town has a range of shops to meet all everyday needs. It is pretty wherever you look - and especially where I live! Getting AroundRomsey has a train station for access to London and the West Country as well as Southampton Airport; a bus station with services to Winchester, Southampton and Salisbury; good cycling paths into surrounding villages plus public footpaths for walking. There is parking outside my house. Other Things to NoteThe Causeway is a private road which is affected by weather conditions: it can be muddy and there are often potholes to drive over. It has the River Test on one side and a ditch on the other and is narrow - so drive carefully! I regret the room available is not big enough to accommodate children.
