Sweets and biscuits are often provided too! Your room looks out over our rear garden and all bedlinen and towels are provided. The room is for ONE PERSON only. Your car can be parked on the double drive. Guest AccessYou will be sleeping in one of our 3 double bedrooms with sole use of a private bathroom with power shower one step away. Toiletries are provided too.. We have a breakfast area which is yours to use, but the rest of the house is shared with us! Interaction with GuestsAt least one of us (but generally both) will be at home to receive you on arrival, and you are very welcome to a coffee/tea with us! After that, we will not disturb you, but we'll be available if you need anything..... Brian can cook English breakfasts, and will provide one for you if required for £5. (Please let us know before you arrive). Otherwise in the morning help yourself to fruit juice, tea / coffee, fruit, toast and jam or marmalade. The table will be set for you... There is always soya milk in the fridge, sometimes coconut milk too. (Helen also has Vegemite for fellow lovers of that delight!) We are generally around at breakfast time, depending on how early you / we need to get away..... The NeighborhoodOur neighbourhood is very quiet, despite being 100 yards from a Spar corner shop, hairdresser and English pub (The Jovial Monk) which also offers a taxi service. The shop is useful for baked items, drinks, sandwiches and pizzas / ready meals which can be heated in our oven / microwave. At the top of the street, the Newton Grange pub (with a 'Generous George' dining franchise) offers a comfortable environment in which to drink or have lunch/dinner. If you have a car, about a mile away from our home, stand the 13th Century ruins of Finchale Priory by the River Wear. Attractions in the city include the magnificent Cathedral and Castle and beautiful walks along the River Wear. There is a plethora of pubs, coffee shops and restaurants (Italian / Indian / Mexican / Chinese / Thai etc) in Durham City which reflect the tastes of locals as well as the (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) students who arrive in Durham every October. Getting AroundWithout a car, Durham city centre is about 40 minutes walk away through the countryside (on tarmac paths). We have a very regular bus service; the bus stop is 150 yards away and the No 64 will get you to the historic city centre in 10 minutes. By car you'll get to a parking space in Durham in 5-10 minutes. Car parking is by meter, from 30p to 50p per half hour, but free after 6pm. Newcastle International Airport is approximately 40 minutes drive away. To get to our home from the airport, take the Metro train to Newcastle, then intercity train to Durham. From there, take a taxi (£5 - £8) or take a bus trip (No 64) from North Road. (Very near to the train station). Durham is on a main line train route to London (2 hours 54 minutes), Newcastle (15 minutes), Edinburgh (1 hour 15 minutes). The train station is about 6 mins away from our home by taxi, 10 mins by bus, or a 40 minute walk away. It has gardens on all sides and a vegetable patch, a lawn with miniature fruit trees and neighbouring allotments with chickens. Eating and drinking are not allowed in the bedrooms only coffee/tea/snacks. Interaction with GuestsI am a very sociable person, but I am pretty easy about that, as much or as little interaction as you would like. I have lived in the UK for 17 years and I can offer a wealth of information about the local area (and beyond!). I can suggest day trips (to Newcastle, Edinburgh, York, the Hadrian Wall, the Beamish Museum) The NeighborhoodDurham City historical town, with the stunning Norman cathedral and Castle where the Harry Potter's film was shot, its cobbled streets, nice shops, restaurant and cafes and market, offers a beautiful opportunity to go back in time and relax in a friendly atmosphere. Not far away are Edinburgh (1:50 hr by train), York (45 minutes) and Newcastle (15 minutes) and many other beautiful attractions of the North of the UK ready to be explored. Ushaw Moor, on the other hand, where the house is situated, is a small village which used to be a mining centre. Since the 1980s the mines around the village have been shut and the countryside reclaimed. There are beautiful walks and cycle tracks in the woods where the little coal railways used to run. That is why they are called railway paths. Getting AroundThe bus 43 and 48 will take you to Durham bus station in 10-15 minutes (depending on traffic). Buses leave 2-3 times an hour during the week and every hour in the evening (one week travel card costs 17 pounds ). Buses timetables can be found on (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN): Arriva 43 Durham Esh Winning or Arriva Bus 48 Durham New Brancepeth. The nearest 43 bus stop for the house is (from Durham) Temperance Terrace. The nearest 48 bus stop (from Durham) is "The Flass" pub. For Durham city centre both the 43 and 43 bus stops are "The Flass". A taxi to and from the train station will charge £8-9. Other Things to NoteAlthough we are very close to Durham, the village of Ushaw Moor is absolutely independent in the ranges of shops on offer. Three minutes away there is a Coop supermarket open 7am-10pm every day Saturdays and Sundays included. There is also a small sandwich deli and a series of take- aways: fish and chips, pizza, chinese and indian are also available and opened til late. There is a pharmacy, hair dresser-beautician, florist, pet shop and two convenience stores for general items like batteries, household wares, etc.

The SpaceYour room is cheerfully decorated, very cosy, and quiet. Guest AccessYou are welcome to make yourself at home in my house, whether it's reading or relaxing in front of the TV in the living room or enjoying a meal or a quiet read in the dining room, or a hot bath in the large bathtub by candlelight. During mild weather, enjoy the back patio garden or have your coffee in the breakfast room out back where the sun streams in (when we have it!) Interaction with GuestsI or my housesitter will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about the area and getting around; we work full-time days but one is generally in on the evenings. Breakfast is self-serve and includes cereals, toast, juice and tea/coffee. The NeighborhoodOur village is highly regarded in the area for it's natural charm; lovely for country walks; there are two pubs, one at each end of the high street as well as a garden centre with tea rooms and cafe. There are no shops in the village, so any food shopping must be done in the city centre or at the local shopping centres if you have a car. Getting AroundA taxi into town costs about £7; a taxi from Newcastle airport costs about £30 but I recommend booking ahead with the airport shuttle service at (URL HIDDEN) There are several bus lines that service the village, stopping just at the bottom of the road and which go directly into town passing along the way many of the university's buildings. A timetable is provided at the house or online at (URL HIDDEN) plus they have a 'livemap' app for your phone. The university's science site or Palatine Centre is just a 20 min walk from here and the sports centre is even closer. Durham's city centre is a 30-min walk and can be done along the main road or by taking the riverside for a scenic country walk. Other Things to NoteThere are two cats living in the house, Boo Radley and Stan. They do not always get on with each other, but they love guests! In our village, good mobile reception can be hard to get which is important to note if you take a taxi and expect to pay by card or mobile. You should be prepared to pay cash in case driver is unable to connect. I do have a landline in the house for calls if necessary.

The SpaceThis is our family holiday caravan. Ideally suited for a couple but we are willing to discuss more guests. The caravan is clean, dry, functional and simple. We do not have mains electricity but you will be able to charge your phone in our house. Access is via a bumpy track and during very wet weather you may not be able to bring your car all the way to the caravan! ( which would mean a short 5 min walk...we can help carry your bags!) This is a working small holding with sheep baahing, Cockerells crowing, and machines making noises sometimes. Please do note that there is no bath or shower although there is a sink and a bowl for washing. Also the toilet is a compost loo without a seat so you need to be able to squat! Guest AccessWe have a beautiful 15 acre site with a river at the bottom. It is south facing with an old coppice woodland. There are fields with sheep, a hen area, bees, willow coppice for basketry. We run an organic veggie box scheme and grow lots of veg and fruit in our gardens. You will be able to freely wonder around the whole area and ask us about our small holding. Interaction with GuestsWe will be present during your stay but we do not expect you to interact with us! Equally, if you do want to find out more about our lifestyle we will try and answer your questions! The NeighborhoodAlthough our small holding feels very rural we are very close to Durham city, only 2 miles. Broompark village is small and soon may have a pub in operation! We are adjacent to a cycle path linking to many miles of network. The beautiful weardale vally is 30 min. Drive along the road, stunning Northumberland coast a 30 min. Train journey, Yorkshire Dales an hour away by car, 2 hours from the lake district ! Clearly we are centre of the universe!!! The best open air museum 'Beamish' is a must, and of course there is Newcastle, a 12 min train journey to the Sage, Baltic, Discovery museum, centre for life and naturally Leazes park, home to the fabulous annual green festival! ! Getting AroundFrom the caravan it is a 15 minuite walk to the bus stop. Buses take 10 mins to reach Durham city. Our small holding is adjacent to the national cycle network and links up with the cycle tracks to Bishop Auckland, Lanchester, Esh winning. Other Things to NoteOur small holding does not actually have a post code so i would need to send the directions via email!

There is a comfortable 6' 3" by 3' 6" bed which is great for a restful sleep. Guest AccessGuests have the single room. There is a shared family bathroom and a kitchen dining room for breakfast. The NeighborhoodThe city is on your doorstep and it is a walkable journey to shops, theatre, cafes and the University buildings. Getting AroundThe house is 5 mins from the rail and bus station and has easy access to all local towns and cities.

The SpaceYou'll enjoy this spacious, classically decorated double bedroom with all-cotton bedding and a lovely view onto our terraced gardens. I also offer a single room which can be found under listing, Van Gogh Room at Shincliffe. Guest AccessYou are welcome to make yourself at home in my house, whether it's reading or relaxing in front of the TV in the living room or enjoying a meal or a quiet read in the dining room, or a hot bath in the large bathtub by candlelight. During mild weather, enjoy the back patio garden or have your coffee in the breakfast room out back where the sun streams in (when we have it!) Interaction with GuestsI or my housesitter will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about the area and getting around; we work full-time weekdays but one will generally be in on the evenings. Other Things to NoteThere are two cats living in the house--Boo Radley and Stan. Sometimes they do not get on with each other but they love guests! In our village, good mobile reception can be hard to get which is important to note if you take a taxi and expect to pay by card or mobile. You should be prepared to pay cash in case driver is unable to connect. I do have a landline in the house for calls if necessary.

The SpaceThis is a three-bedroom, red-brick, mid-terrace property in a typical, former mining village in County Durham. There is a pavement in front of the house and then the street, which offers (free) on-street parking. The house has rural views to the rear and almost on the doorstep, there is a network of well-maintained footpaths (converted from the former railway network) which are used by walkers and cyclists. The house is a mere four miles from the centre of historic Durham City with a regular bus service: the number 48 from the stop a few steps from the front door and the number 43 from the crossroads in the village, five minutes walk from the house. Breakfast is provided. This house is really warm and cosy, which can be an advantage in the North-East of England! It is centrally-heated and well insulated. Hot water is available instantly (gas combi-boiler). The house sleeps four (or five, on request - see 'Other Things to Note' below): there is a bedroom to the rear of the house, with a view over fields and trees, which has a standard double bed; there is also a good-sized room to the front of the house with a large (6'6" long) single bed and a smaller room to the front, also with a large single bed. All beds have non-allergenic duvets and pillows. There is a home-made quilt on each bed and in addition there are spare blankets in the wardrobes in each room. You won't be chilly! We are happy to welcome small visitors: there is a travel cot and bedding and a high chair available for their use. There is a family bathroom on the first floor with bath and walk-in shower. A bath-towel is provided for each guest. Hand-towels and liquid soap are provided in the kitchen and bathroom, where you will also find shampoo and a hair-dryer for guests to use. There is a full-length mirror on the landing and additional mirrors in all the bedrooms and in the bathroom - useful if you are with us for a special occasion. There is an iron and an ironing board in the house. We have a washing machine and airing rack if you need them. Downstairs, leading off the hall, there is a sitting room with very comfortable seating (including a rocking chair and a reclining chair as well as a two-seater sofa). Television and DVD player are provided; there DVDs on the bookshelf. Also leading off the hall, is a dining room with good-sized table and four chairs. (There are additional chairs in the bedrooms.) The table can also be used as a working space for a lap-top as there are sockets close by and there is free wi-fi in the house. There is a small CD player/radio in this room. This room also has a two-seater sofa and large upholstered footstool, so it can be used as an additional sitting room. In the dresser you will find board games to play and even a jigsaw or two. There is a door from the dining room to the kitchen which is modern and well supplied with utensils and equipment, including for example baking trays, weighing scales, casserole dishes and a cafetiere (we give you real coffee so you can make a cup when you arrive). There is an electric oven, hob and a microwave, a Candy washing machine and a Bosch fridge/freezer. Outside is a small yard. We can offer a lockable shed, if required, for example for cyclists wishing to store their bikes securely. The house is painted white throughout. It is sunny at the front of the house in the morning and at the back in the afternoon. Several guests have commented on the 'nice atmosphere' in the house. The house has been arranged for you to make the most of your stay. We provide a basket full of tourist information about Durham, Newcastle/Gateshead, Bishop Auckland, the coast and the countryside and are happy to offer information, suggestions and advice, to help make your stay enjoyable. Guest AccessGuests have the whole house to themselves. This is a mid-terraced property. There is free on-street parking. It is usually possible to park directly in front of the house. Interaction with GuestsWe live in the same street, just over the road, and are available to offer any help or assistance required. We speak French, German and Spanish: On parle francais. Wir sprechen Deutsch. Hablamos Espanol. The NeighborhoodUshaw Moor is a former mining village. We live in the village ourselves, just over the road from the Air BnB house. Ushaw Moor is located to the west of Durham only four miles from the city centre. Depending on the traffic, it takes approximately 20 minutes by road from the A1. The moor rises up on higher ground beyond the village. There is open countryside round about. Ushaw Moor has a Post Office, Chemist, GP surgery, pub, Community Garden, Co-op supermarket, R and B Convenience Store (open until 10pm) and other shops, including hairdressers and beauty shops, plus several takeaways (Indian, Chinese, Italian). The historic city of Durham (with its World Heritage Site cathedral) has plenty to offer the visitor. The house provides a good base for relatives and friends of students at Durham University. From the house, you can also travel easily to Newcastle-Gateshead, to the North-East coast, and into the beautiful Weardale countryside. Please feel free to ask the owner for recommendations regarding places to visit round about. (See also our on-line Air BnB Guidebook.) Getting AroundThe number 48 bus runs from a stop a few steps from the front door and the number 43 bus runs from a stop at the cross-roads in the village - a four-minute walk up the road. Both buses go several times an hour into Durham bus station, with a journey time of about 15 minutes. If you are arriving by train, a taxi from Durham station to the house costs around £8. There are usually taxis waiting at the station. There is a taxi firm based in Ushaw Moor itself: First Choice Taxis. From Newcastle Airport, take the Metro train from the airport to Newcastle Central Station, then the mainline train from Newcastle to Durham (typical journey time is about 10 minutes for this part of the journey, as these are high speed trains), then taxi, as above. It is also possible to get a bus from Durham to Ushaw Moor, but it means walking downhill with your luggage, as the railway station is up on a hill and the bus station is not! From the bus station it is possible to take buses to destinations all round the local area. There is free on-street parking on the road. It is usually possible to park in front of the house. The house is easy to find by road. Other Things to NoteIt is possible, on request, to accommodate a fifth person in the house, as we have an additional single mattress and bedding available. There is a £5 per night fee for this. Please send an ENQUIRY to the host via the website, before your arrival, and a 'special offer' notification will be sent to you for the additional guest. Cot and high chair are available free of charge.
