The SpaceThe barns are laid out with 33ft, high ceilinged living/dining room with open fireplace, dining table for 6, 40" LCD TV, amplifier for built-in speaker system with connector for iPhone. This is followed by an open kitchen and utility area with all mod cons (dishwasher, range cooker, washing machine, tumble dryer (in separate outbuilding). Small and American style Fridge Freezer with ice dispenser. From here you go down the hallway to the guest double bedroom with antique french mahogany double bed, chest of drawers, 28" LCD TV, and bi-fold doors to the outside, and bathroom with cast iron roll top bath, drench shower & wc. Then you come to large full height master suite with Super King Mahogany sleigh bed, chest of drawers and walk in wardrobe. 32" LCD TV. The ensuite has a double sized cast iron roll top bath with enough room for two, a drench shower and wc. Bed linens are 200 thread count or over. Pillow and duvets are duck down. Beds can be made up with sheets and blankets and/or duvets. (Please specify when booking - also let me know if you would rather have hollow-fibre pillows). Four pillows for the double bedroom and six for the Super King in the master bedroom. We converted the barns from adjoining cows stalls in 2010. We are no longer a diary farm so you won't get muddy feet or the whiff of the herd. The barn conversion was designed to accommodate a couple predominantly, but also has the guest bedroom and bathroom so it comfortably fits 4 with plenty of communal space to enjoy. Personal favorites for me are the log file, which although unnecessary due to the underfloor heating, I wouldn't be without it. Also the 4 sets of bi-folding and french doors give the place a holiday vibe when the sun comes out that I find hard to beat (hopefully you will too!) Guest AccessThe barn is rented in it's entirety. The main farmhouse is behind a high wall adjacent to the property, however privacy is not an issue. You'll be left to your own devices unless you need us. The barns sits in it's own 2 acre paddock where guests are more than welcome to wander, play boule, fly kites or whatever takes your fancy. (There is a big metal dutch barn also in paddock but this is off-limits). There are mown lawns and patios directly around the barns. Sun worshippers should be able to find a sunny spot all through the day, and there are sun loungers on wheels to allow you to follow rays in comfort. You can join a foot path directly from the paddock which takes you into the pretty village of Bayford and the local pub, The Unicorn. Interaction with GuestsThe main farmhouse is behind a wall 20 ft away from the barn but faces in the opposite direction. There are some windows on the backside of the house but these have been blurred so you cannot be over looked from the main house either in the barns or it's grounds. I have an office/studio in the paddock which shares the barn's parking area as an access. If I'm there I'll keep out of your way. If however, you fancy some light conversation about the area or to share an alcoholic beverage, I'm more than happy to join you. I aim to be somewhere on the farm during your stay in case you need something. The NeighborhoodOne thing we love about the location is it's situation on the outskirts of the town of Wincanton. On one side you have rolling contryside and on the other you're a 5 minute walk to the highstreet. No worries about driving to the pub or a long drive for last minute groceries. Wincanton has a racecourse, a sport centre with indoor pool and a sports ground, various non-membership gyms and is the gateway to some local gems (20 for starters): 1. Hauser and Wirth (Bruton - 6 Miles) - World renowned modern art gallery with restaurant and hipster Friday night cocktail bar and live musical entertainment 2.Stourhead House and Garden (Stourton - 6 Miles) - Capability Brown designed gardens - familiar to many movie goers as it's often used as a set for a period drama. 3. At the Chapel (Bruton 6 Miles) - Converted chapel restaurant, pizzeria and fine wine shop. A local hub for the glitterti - If you don't see Kevin McCloud in there I'd be amazed. (sorry Kevin, but it's almost every time I'm in there) 4. Haynes Motor Museum - 400 Classic cars in the recently refurbished museum to all things automotive. A favourite with the boys (especially the big ones) 5. Stonehenge - (29 miles) - No need to leave the A303 for this one - It's 30 mins East in a straight line. You can't miss it, or it's new visitor centre. 6. Longleat Safari park - Home for the BBC Animal Park series. Famed for it's lions, but has a whole lot more to offer for all the family. 7. Getting AroundBeing directly of the A303 Wincanton is a great base for a sightseeing break as there are a wealth of attractions in almost every direction. Trains from Waterloo run at least every hour to Templcombe (4 miles away), from Paddington to Castle Cary (7 Miles) or Bruton (6 miles) more than once an hour, and the Berry's coach shuttles from Hammersmith twice daily for about £20/return. It's the first stop and it drops you off at the bottom of the hill from the barn - 5 mins walk up our steep hill (views from the top make it worth it). I'm more than happy to arrange a taxi for you if I can't collect you myself. There are buses to some of the local hubs but it's not an especially easy area to get around by bus. If you need more info on this let me know and I'll do my best to make you a travel plan. Other Things to NoteI can supply logs for the indoor fire or outdoor firepit. A large basket is £25 (equivalent to a big black bin - more than enough for two evenings on the indoor fire if you don't go mad.

The larger of two tastefully converted barns in the grounds of a medieval manor house...... Forming one side of a large courtyard, these two attractive cottages enjoy an idyllic setting at the end of a no-through road in the grounds of an ancient Grade II Listed manor house. Stoke Trister itself is a tiny hamlet on the borders of Somerset, Wiltshire and Dorset, just over a mile from the main A303 road to the South West yet its geographical location, tucked away in a small valley with beautiful views across open countryside, makes it feel far more remote than that. Much skill and energy has gone into the conversion of these two farm buildings which form form one side of a large courtyard. They provide attractive, well planned, practical living areas with good kitchen and bathroom appliances while at the same time taking care to preserve original features e.g. natural stone exteriors and the timber structure inside.

They provide attractive, well planned, practical living areas with good kitchen and bathroom appliances while at the same time taking care to preserve original features e.g. natural stone exteriors and the timber structure inside. Beyond the courtyard is the large Manor House pond into which spring waters flow from the hillside above, making this a magical setting. Country walks start from your door but if you wish to venture further afield then the whole area has many visitor attractions within easy driving distance - King Alfred's Tower, Stourhead House and Gardens (N.T.), Stonehenge, Longleat, Bath, Salisbury, Cheddar Gorge, Glastonbury - while a beautiful stretch of the South Dorset Heritage coastline from Poole to Portland Bill (including Studland Bay, Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove) is reachable in about an hour. Accommodation: Lower Barn is all on one level with underfloor central heating. Entrance into a double-height, open-plan living room with dining and fitted kitchen areas. French doors lead out onto a raised deck, from where there are lovely views across open pastureland over the vale. Two bedrooms - one with kingsize double and the other with twin beds. Shower room/wc. The raised deck is a great place to relax and soak in in the restful view across the vale. There is also a games room with table tennis.

For an overnight stay we couldn't have hoped for more, apart from wishing we could've stayed longer." So, what can you expect from a stay with us? Arrive and enjoy complimentary tea and locally made biscuits/cake (or even a glass of wine, depending on the time!), then check out our comprehensive folder of local information and consider how you'll spend your time in Dorset. (The bedroom is quite large and there is ample space for you to put up your own travel cot if you are travelling with a baby. As an additional family-friendly security measure, we have a stair gate at the top of the stairs and there is also a night light on the landing. Feel free to borrow one of our child friendly books or DVDs during your stay). We also offer a smaller, single bedded room, also with a black out blind, made up with the same high quality bed linens and offering ample hanging/storage space, a Freeview TV, a hairdryer and a robe. This bedroom has the sole, private use of a separate bathroom with a power shower attachment over the bath and it is available for use by a member of your group when the double bedroom is also booked. Please select 3 guests when you book to request this option and reserve both rooms. [If you are travelling as part of a larger group, please check out our other listing at “Hot tub, warm welcome, stylish B&B, North Dorset” - we have a total of three rooms available in our home and welcome groups who wish to book both the double en-suite rooms and the single room as a party of five guests (or six including an infant in a travel cot). A few ideas might include: Walks in and around the immediate vicinity of the house (we are on the Stour Valley Way and Gillingham is a "Walkers are Welcome" town); trips to local beauty spots such as the ancient hill top Saxon town of Shaftesbury, complete with its famous Gold Hill (of Hovis bread advertisement fame); local National Trust beauty spot Stourhead House and gardens plus its folly, Arthur’s Tower; a visit to Sherborne, its castle and Capability Brown designed garden, Abbey and antique shops; a trip to one of the regular farmers’ markets or perhaps try and visit us during the famous Sturminster Newton Cheese Festival or Wimborne Food Festival if you're a foodie; a drive down to the famous Dorset Jurassic Coast – resorts include Lulworth Cove, Weymouth, Bournemouth, Poole, Studland, Bridport, West Bay (home of TV series 'Broadchurch') and fossil hunting paradise Lyme Regis; a trip to Bruton, Longleat or to Glastonbury, which offers lots more than just the famous festival; a spot of retail therapy at Clark’s Village in Street; a visit to Stonehenge, just up the A303; or a mooch around the lovely ancient city of Salisbury, with its famous cathedral, just two stops away by train. For literary fans, Gillingham is referenced in Thomas Hardy's novel "Jude the Obscure" as Leddenton and there are many other Hardy spots around his fictional area of "Wessex" to visit; Shaftesbury features in "Tess of the D'Urbervilles" as Shaston, for example. We have a number of Dorset based novels available, including the book and DVD of "Jude the Obscure" plus other works by local authors such as John Fowles. If you're a cyclist, we are located on National Route 25 of the National Cycle Network. This connects with route 24 at Longleat and runs south through Gillingham to Bournemouth on the coast. Another great ride is from the house to Stourhead, Arthur's Tower and back via Zeals; you'll cross the Wiltshire county line, see some amazing views and cover about 10 miles - but there are some great pubs along the way! Our local cycle shop is very friendly and always welcomes visitors to their 9 am Saturday group ride - we can provide further details if you're interested. Anyone who enjoys fishing might enjoy a trip to local beauty spots Shearwater or Lodden Lakes, where day memberships are available. Guest AccessYou are welcome to relax in the guest areas of: the guest bedrooms, the guest dining room, the landing library, the garden and the hot tub zone. Access to the garden and hot tub area is via the kitchen. We have a dog and two cats who stay elsewhere in the house. A broad stretch of gently rolling countryside, the Vale falls between the Cranborne Chase 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' to the east and the chalk Dorset Downs to the south, with the River Stour flowing along the valley. Gillingham offers a number of independent shops, as well as supermarkets such as Waitrose and Asda. We are located a short 10 minute walk from the High Street and can provide a list of personally recommended eating and drinking spots in the area. We are great foodies and have discovered some lovely pubs and restaurants which we’re happy to share with you. Please check out our reviews to see which of the places we've recommended have also been enjoyed by previous guests - or simply bring/buy a picnic to have in your private dining room and we'll happily lend you plates, cutlery, napkins and glasses. Getting AroundThe nearest railway station is Gillingham (Dorset) which is on the London Waterloo to Exeter St David’s line. If we are around, we’re happy to pick you up at the station or else it is c. a 12 minute walk to the house or a 5 minute cab ride; there are always taxis available at the station upon arrival. The same train line will also get you to Sherborne and Salisbury and there are buses available from Gillingham to local towns such as Wincanton, Shaftesbury and Blandford Forum. However, a car is very useful if you wish to go further afield. We have ample parking at the front of the house and a secure, locked garage for your bicycle or motorcycle, as appropriate. Other Things to NoteGillingham can offer a leisure centre with swimming pool and a recently opened children’s soft play area; there are also a number of beauty salons and hairdressers’ in the town if you’d like a quick manicure or blow-dry/beard trim. We are a short walk from Waitrose, Asda and One Stop and also have takeaways, restaurants and pubs within a short walk if you don't wish to drive. If you are visiting Gillingham for rugby related reasons, we are a very short drive or taxi ride away from North Dorset Rugby Football Club, so do please consider staying here if you are planning to attend a match or a social event. We are also close to Gillingham's popular secondary school and to the three feeder primary schools if you are in the area for an educational event. We have a very friendly dog (again, check out the reviews!) and love to meet new ones, so if you’d like to come and stay with your own canine friend, please discuss this with us in advance before you book. A charge of £5 per dog per night will be collected via the Airbnb Resolution Centre. We can provide advice and guidance on some of the many beautiful on/off lead walks in the area and suggestions as to dog-friendly eating out options.
