The SpaceI offer you a home away from home in my beautiful apartment, right in the historic city centre of Quetzaltenango (Xela).
You will be staying in a cozy bedroom with a double bed, a big closet, a couch, a desk, some chairs and free WIFI.
The room is clean with fresh bed linen, towels, soap, shampoo and tourist information. From the room you have a beautiful view of the Cathedral and the mountains surrounding Xela. This room also has a small balcony. So in case you smoke, you can do it there.
You can also use the spacious living/dining room and fully equipped kitchen with free drinking water, coffee and tea. The bathroom is shared with me and maybe one or two other guests.
The bright and homely apartment is located on the third floor in a building on a central street, just two blocks from the Central Park. It is close to restaurants, (super)markets, Spanish schools, shopping and nightlife.
You will get your own key upon arrival, so you can come in and leave whenever you want. Guest AccessLIVING/DINING ROOM. The main space of the house is a large living/dining room. There are comfortable sofas and a TV. In the same central room there is a big dining table. There is plenty of space to read a book, listen to music or plan your trips.
BATHROOM. There is 1 bathroom with a toilet and an electric shower with hot water. You share this bathroom with me and maybe one or two other guests.
KITCHEN. Guests are welcome to use the well equipped kitchen. It has a big stove, a refrigerator, a microwave and all the pots and pans for you to use.
FREE. There is free WIFI, coffee, tea and drinking water.
LAUNDRY. You get one free laundry service for every week you stay.
PARKING. There are different parking possibilities available nearby at a small extra cost. Interaction with GuestsI enjoy interacting with guests but I am also fine if you are independent and make your own plans. Most of the time I am around to answer questions or give travel advice, but there also are maps, tourist information and guide books in the house. If you want to, I can give you a tour through Xela, we could have dinner together or go for some drinks in one of the local bars. The NeighborhoodThe apartment has a fantastic location in the middle of the Historic City Centre, with many bars, restaurants, the Central Park and excellent transport links to rest of the city and to the terminal from where you can travel the rest of Guatemala.
Zone 1 is Xela’s most historical, vibrant, fun and interesting district. It has a lot of bars, restaurants and cafes and also has some interesting buildings and a small national history museum.
All within walking distance of the apartment:
-The Central Park: A well maintained park surrounded by neoclassical buildings like the municipal palace, the bank and the house of culture. Here you will find young love couples, street vendors and shoe shiners hanging around.
-Pasaje Enriquez: A fancy antique shopping hall with Italian paintings that now hosts restaurants, bars and tourist offices.
-Cathedral of the Holy Spirit: The Cathedral has two facades: one with an old colonial style and one with a more straight, symmetrical and modern look.
-National History Museum: A small museum with pre-Columbian ceramics, photos, and stuffed animals. It’s worth taking a visit for the fee of only a few Quetzales and because they have a quetzal, the national bird, on display.
-Casa Noj: expositions and art
-Cerro el Baul: beautiful natural area with a great view over the city.
-The Cementary: one of the oldest cementeries of Guatemala with spectacular graves, like pyramids, Greek structures and decapitated angels.
-Bars with live music
Xela is a great base to discover western highland towns and villages, go to the ‘Fuentes Georginas’ Hot Springs or climb a volcano.
Once a month there is artisanal market in the central park. There is a small market nearby where you can buy fresh fruits, vegetables and meat every day from 08:00 until 17:00. The big Democracia Market is a 15 min. walk from the apartment and there you can really find anything you want.
There are a number of art galleries in the area and a lot of cafes to hang out.
The Historic centre of Xela is a very nice mix of colonial and neoclassic architecture. Xela is famous for the Spanish language schools and opportunities to do some voluntary work at one of the many NGO's.
If you have never been to Guatemala, this is the perfect base to explore Guatemala’s beauty. Xela has great places for night life and of course the historical Parque Central and landmarks. Guatemala City is about 200 kilometers from Quetzaltenango. There are lots of nearby buses that will take you to Fuentes Georginas, Laguna de Chicabal, Atitlán, Chichicastenango, nearby beaches, and Antigua. Getting AroundTransport links are superb here.
Just some blocks away you can take the minibuses that drive around the city to go to other parts of the city or to the terminal where the Public Chicken Buses leave to any other direction in Guatemala.
There are also taxis and first class buses nearby. Other Things to NoteThe apartment is located on the corner of an important street of the city centre. This means that there is some traffic noise, also during the night.
At the moment there is some construction work going on, on the first floor of the building. So during the day there might be some construction noise.
