Enjoy the beautiful quaint University town, Shantiniketan, in the Birbhum District of West Bengal, about 200 km North West of Calcutta
(Kolkata). Shantinketan has been made famous thanks to Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore, who founded the internationally famous University, Viswa Bharati. A visit to the University, located in a beautiful park with special architecture and the famous Tagore Museum is a must for all tourists.
A cultural hub of the state, some of the key social and cultural events are Basanta Utsav (Spring Festival: Dol / Holi generally during the first fortnight of March), Poush Mela (around December 23), Barsha Mangal, Sharodutsav, Nandan Mela, Magh Mela, Rabindra Jayanti etc which have become an
integral part of Shantinketan. These events are organised under the aegis of Viswa Bharati University and attracts people/tourists from around the world. These fairs are a platform for local artisans, crafts men, folk
singers, dancers and of course the traditional Baul singers (the world famous folk singers of the locality) to showcase their wonderful art-forms. There is a vibrant and large artist community in Shantiniketan. The local Saturday Haat on the banks of a canal is very popular with visitors where hand stitched textiles, local crafts, etc; are on sale.
