The tourism Valtournenche is particularly related to winter sports, especially skiing. The village of Breuil-Cervinia is one of the main tourist areas in the Alps, thanks to the extraordinary views of the Matterhorn and its renowned ski area, which also allow the connection to the famous Swiss resort of Zermatt and the glacier of Plateau Rosa ( district of the Matterhorn Ski Paradise).
Since the seventies, also the village of Valtournenche has seen a development of its tourist economy, previously linked only to that of Breuil-Cervinia. In 1974, in fact, with the inauguration of the 4-seater gondola Valtournenche-Salette, skiers began to know also the capital city as a tourist destination. The gondola lift, managed by the company Cime Bianche, born seven years ago at the initiative of four young local entrepreneurs, needed a long and technical track, called Reine Blanche or Grand Cross of Valtournenche. In 1975, they were, therefore, opened the first ski lift, which from the mountain station of the cable car, reached the 2,896 m above sea level Bottom of the Hill Cime Bianche. The systems were used several slopes of easy and intermediate difficulty. In 1982, with the creation of the ski lift Gran Sometta, plants were connected Valtournenche, reaching the top of Colle Cime Bianche, with the ski area of Breuil-Cervinia and therefore also with Zermatt.
The Valtournenche thus became a convenient point of access to the ski Cervinia and Zermatt.
In the nineties, the drop in attendance due to a decrease in snowfall and to plant now too dated, caused a change in the management of the station. The Company Cime Bianche became, in fact, a public company, it allowed the station to modernize. In 1997, the 4-seater gondola Valtournenche-Salette was replaced by a modern cable car to 12 seats. Later, they were made the first artificial snow. In 2006 most of the old lifts were dismantled to make way for modern chairlifts Motta, Du Col and Bec CarrĂŠ. He was also enhanced the artificial snow system, which in 2008 was extended also to Great Track, allowing return skis in Valtournenche even in case of lack of snow.
For the future, the goal is to continue to improve the tourist offer, making year-on-year intervention is important that the plants on the slopes. In particular, for the latter is scheduled for the winter 2011-2012, the replacement of the ski lift Gran Sometta with a chairlift automatic.
