The SpaceLAMU ISLAND is one of a string of remote islands on the western fringe of the Indian Ocean. It has a colorful history going back to the days of the Arab Spice and Slave trades. and the traditions of the coastal Swahili cultures who have existed here for centuries. Life here moves at walking pace or donkey ride, up to the speed of a lateen sail, for there are no vehicles on the Island. Kisimani House is located on the seaward fringe of Shela village & a 5 min walk to the beach. Kisimani in Swahili means 'the place of the well' and to this day relies on it's own source of artesian water. Originally built in the days of the Caliphate,18thC Kisimani house is the only surviving example of ancient Swahili architecture in Shela. Complete with massive stone walls, carved archways and central courtyards that open up to the big blue sky. The ancients knew what they were doing of course, creating an inner source of light , shade, air and privacy throughout the interior. This sense of space continues on up throughout all four levels of the house with each level comprising a self contained double en-suite and private terrace area. An open stairway allows free movement between all floors without trespass. The house is therefore perfect fox a family (or two) with children, or up to four couples or (singles) with space for toddlers if needed. On the first floor there is a communal terrace with cushioned seating area to lounge in under the shade of pink bougainvillea in the centre of it all stands the dining table with the kitchen discretely adjacent. At the very roof of the house there is a moon-deck terrace. With enormous views over Shela village, out towards Manda island and the shining sea beyond., a perfect place for a sunrise smoothie or a sunset cocktail. RATES for the whole house @ US$300 per day. Rooms may also be rented individually on a special Bed & Breakfast offer from US$50 per person per day. the kitchen discretely adjacent. The SpaceYou can find huge, magnificent, luxuriously renovated houses in Lamu or Shela. SHUWARI is simple and modest. Only one ground floor and roof terrace, but cosy. A small but lush garden. No breathtaking view, but the breeze cools the roof top terrace and makes it a nice place to rest or chill. You could hope being near the beach. But after dawn, you can easily walk to the sea front, walk along the busy streets, mingle with the very friendly Lamu people. Enjoy sophisticated of (delicious) local Swahili food. SHUWARI allows you to enjoy the whole of Lamu life. Guest AccessShuwari is at a few hundred meters from the jetty, in a quiet area of Lamu town. The beach starts from Shela, 3 km from the town. A nice 20mn walk along the sea shore. But you can also take a boat, many are available. I also own a sailing dhow, ZEITUN. On request, Captain Shee can take you to a fishing trip, or sunset sailing, or to visit places like Takwa ruins, Matondoni or Manda Toto. Or more special programs. Interaction with GuestsI wont be around during your stay. But Ngema will take a good care of you. He's been working in SHUWARI for many year, He learnt with my wife how to cook delicious food, how to find for you good fish or sea food in the market. Talk with him, he will just be happy to please you. The NeighborhoodAs a house in town, Shuwari is ideally situated. Right in the middle of Mkomani, the old Stone Town where most houses made in coral stones date back to XVIIIthe Century, The area is much more quiet than the busy and popular Langoni area, or the sea front. It is a mixture of posh renovated mansions, houses of local people, guest houses, gardens.. You find shops nearby, From a distance, the muezzin of a dozen of mosks mingle their calls to prayer, but none next door. But within minutes, you are shopping in the main street or bargaining your dhow trip with the beach boys in front of Hapa Hapa. Getting AroundYou may reach Lamu by air from Nairobi, Malindi or Mombasa. Several flights a day. If you prefer cheaper transport, you may travel by bus. From Mombasa through Malindi. Several companies. They usually leave Mombasa by 7am, 12am or even night bus at 8pm. Both plane and bus will leave you on the other side of the channel. You'll then have to take a boat to cross to Lamu town for a KSH100 fare or more if you prefer speed boat. Everything wil be made possible so that someone welcomes you on arrival at the jetty, or even at airport. Other Things to NoteOn request, a bed for a young child can be made available.

The SpaceThe house contains three bedrooms, each with a large double bed (185 x 195 cm), a mosquito net and a ceiling fan. One of the bedrooms overlooks the small charming garden with a coconut palm. Each bedroom is connected via an outside terrace - look up once there to admire a ceiling of bougainvillea flowers! There is one bathroom with a shower and toilet. The living room is unpretentious and homey, furnished with a wooden dining table and chairs, wicker armchairs, a sofa and above all a beautifully preserved Lamu wall that is hundreds of years old and gives the room an historical feel. The rooftop of the house offers relaxing days under the banana fibre ceiling, or on lounge chairs. Above all it offers stargazing at the wondrous Lamu night sky, unpolluted from surrounding light and with crystal clear views over the stars. Eddie is the caretaker and cook of Bougainvillea House on Lamu and will prepare exquisite seafood including crab, prawns, lobster and fish, locally caught the very same morning. His coconut rice is the perfect complement. Some of the best mangoes and papayas in the world will be served as desert. He will of course accommodate to any dietary restrictions and requests by you. You can write a list of things you want Eddie to buy, and inform him about what you would like to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner. He will prepare and serve the dishes unless you feel like doing so yourself. Discuss what you would like to eat for each meal, for example one day in advance, so that he has time to buy ingredients. If you feel like buying your own sea food you can go to the fish market in the early morning to buy the catch of the day, fresh off the hook! Guest AccessYou have access to the whole house. However please be aware of that we have one bathroom for all guests in the house. Interaction with GuestsIf there are any problems during your stay you can always speak to Eddie who can try to help you. Otherwise you are welcome to contact us via a message here on Airbnb. Once this is done an SMS is sent to our mobile phone in Sweden, which informs us that there is a message pending on the website. The NeighborhoodWhile on your vacation in Lamu why not take a fishing trip on a Dhow boat or just sail along the coast to discover the beautiful scenery. You can take long strolls on the beach and go for a swim in the Indian Ocean. The water is warm and clear, and the beach is inviting. For the more adventurous-minded you can scuba dive, surf, snorkel, deep sea fish or why not take a donkey ride along the beach? Lamu Old Town is a recommended site to explore while on your vacation on Lamu. The town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and according to UNESCO “the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa”. It is similar to Shela with its labyrinth of narrow alleyways that invite for exploration. The architecture of Lamu Old Town is a unique mixture of Swahili, Arabic, Persian, Indian and European building styles. The Lamu Fort is another interesting site to visit. Built in the 1800s it was initially a point from which control over the East African coast was held. During the British colonial era the fort was used as a prison. Today it contains a museum and a library. If you want to try something new, we recommend that you visit the donkey sanctuary. Donkeys are until recently the only mode of transportation on Lamu, apart from walking of course. An estimated 2 200 donkeys reside on Lamu and are used for transporting heavy loads through the narrow alleyways. The sanctuary has a veterinarian that provides treatment to donkeys free of charge. Fishing is an important part of life for Lamu islanders and there are many opportunities for you to take part in this lifestyle as well. You can for example catch bream along the channel, or go deep sea fishing further out to the ocean to catch bigger fish. Don’t forget your sunscreen, water and a hat! Getting AroundA number of airlines fly regularly to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi. From there you need to take a flight to Lamu's neighbouring island, Manda with JamboJet, Fly540, Air Kenya or Safarilink. These flights leave either from Kenyatta or from Wilson Airport in Nairobi. Upon arrival to Manda Airport, Eddie will meet you to help you with your luggage and assist you in taking a boat across the straight between Manda and Lamu, and all the way to Bougainvillea House. The boat ride takes about 20 minutes, and the walk from Lamu harbour to the house is about 4 minutes. The boat ride costs about 1200 KES for a return trip. That is the cost for Eddie to take the boat from Lamu to Manda, and then back again with you. Please be sure to have cash with you for the boat trip. Other Things to NotePLEASE READ THROUGH SPECIFICALLY THIS SECTION Upon your arrival, Eddie will meet you at the airport on Manda island with a sign. He will have rented a boat from Lamu island to take you back. The cost of this boat is 1200 KES which is to be paid by you as guests. There is no internet access in the house however Peponi Hotel is around the corner and offers wifi access. Should there be a power cut we have a backup generator. There is no heated water in the house however water from shower and taps is warmed naturally by the sun in a tank on the roof. We are looking into installing heated water, however this is not in place yet. If your party consists of 5 or more, we will hire a second staff during your stay so that we can better accommodate your needs. The extra cost for this is automatically regulated via Airbnb. No food is included in the pricing. Eddie can however purchase and cook your meals. You can choose to give him the money for this before or after he has done the shopping, in any case discuss with him about what suits you best. Alternatively you can buy food yourselves and Eddie can prepare them for you. My best tip is to communicate with him. Before your arrival, Eddie will have bought food in preparation for lunch or dinner depending on what time you arrive. He will give the receipt to you and you will then have pay him the equivalent amount. Neither Eddie nor us charge any extra for this and he is trustworthy so please do not worry about this. Food costs between (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) KES for three meals, per person, per day. The price varies depending on the food you want. No drinks included in that estimation. Eddie is the best source of this information. Your first day is usually more expensive. Extra things need to be bought that last for the duration of your stay such as butter, oil and milk. Coconut and lime are very cheap but seafood prices vary of course depending on what you order from Eddie. I generally suggest you tell Eddie to buy a certain fish/seafood according to you budget. If you do not want Eddie to buy anything before your arrival I suggest Peponi hotel for your first meal. Please just inform me about this in beforehand so that I can inform Eddie not to buy anything. Eddie lives far from our house. His trip home is dangerous if its too late in the evening. Therefore please be informed that dinner is served between 6 - 6:30 PM. Eddie will have to leave at the latest 7:30-7:45 PM to make it home with the regular transportation. If you want him to stay later he can do so but then please communicate this with him in beforehand. It will also imply a cost of 1000 KES for you as he needs to go home with the alternative buses, taxis and boats that are more expensive. This money has to be given to him in cash. However if he leaves the regular time it will not cost you anything extra. Eddie works hard and is at your service every day of your stay. He is without a doubt trustworthy and has worked for us for over fifteen years. As a token of your appreciation, he as well as the eventual second staff will be happy to receive any tips at your discretion.

The house built on nearly one acre of land set 5 minutes walk from Manda beach was built in a characteristic Lamu coastal style. GETTING AROUND There are no cars on either Lamu or Manda Island leaving donkeys and boats as the main form of transportation by locals and tourists alike. From Manda Beach it takes 5 minutes or less to travel across the channel to Shela village and beach, 15 minutes to Lamu Old Town and 20 minutes to Lamu Airport which is located on the other end of Manda Island and is also reached by boat. You can hire a boat with a captain for the duration of your stay or use a boat for individual trips when you need to. Boat trips (and Dhow trips) can easily be arranged from Mkoko House on request. There are three en-suite double bedrooms with mosquito nets draped over the beds and fixed ontothe shutters to keep the mosquitoes and other annoyances at bay. As you walk towards the house you are greeted by an outside baraza (seating area) on your right which is shaded by a ceiling of crawling plants. The entrance of the house is a simple but large arch which carries you into the ground floor dining area. To the right is the first en-suite double bedroom (Nyota –Stars- room) and to the left is a living area with a baraza covered in cushions and pillows to relax on. Off this living area, you will find the second en-suite double bedroom (Mbuyu- Baobab- room) with a terrace looking onto the back garden. The kitchen, also on the ground floor, is fully equipped and opens onto an outside cooking area which can also be used for preparing meals. The stairs take you up onto a large open floor (walls built only to one’s hip) with views of the mangroves and the garden. The entire floor is covered by a large Makuti roof (the single most common characteristic of coastal architecture). This open floor is the main living area of the house. There are hammocks, seating corners, a Lamu bed to nap on, and another dining table to enjoy your meals with the splendid views. There is also a separate bathroom off this room for anyone who wishes to sleep in this room. Situated on this floor is the third and largest en-suite bedroom (Mkoko- Mangrove- room) which one enters through a carved wooden antique Lamu door. Outside the room, one finds another baraza with cushions. This particular area is roofless and so is a perfect place to sit and enjoy the incredible Manda night skies filled with stars. A second flight of stairs will take you up into the Makuti roof to the final floor – another open floor with hammocks, mattresses, and cushions organised exclusively for relaxation. This floor offers the best views in the house and allows one to look across the island’s extensive mangrove ecosystem, the sea, and the plains of acacia and baobab trees. The price mentioned is per person per night, please contact us if you would like to rent the whole house. The rate includes a housekeeper who cleans the house on a daily basis, changes sheets and towels, and attends to the garden. A cook is also available so you can enjoy an array of meals cooked to your personal taste. A variety of seafood is available (fish, crabs, prawns, lobster, octopus, etc) depending on the season. Airport pick-up and drop-off can be arranged on request and cost usually less than 10 euro/boat. Rates during the peak season (15 December-15 January) are available on request.

The SpaceThe 18th Century ruin was last lived in by a Swhaili noble woman over an hundred years ago and was then left deserted and fell into ruin. We restored it with modern ‘improvements’, included a yoga hall and built ourselves an ajoining house (the Sand Castle) and also a Garden Cottage. It might sound crowded but all fits together in harmony and leaves us lots of garden space. We added a small and very popular plunge pool some years ago. Most of the year guests take meals in the garden which is full of palms and greenery, we left natural sand on the ground which is moistened and racked daily. As one guest remarked with delight “probably only the Emporer of Japan and I are breakfasting in a garden such as this”. Behind us are the sand dunes covered in greenery and full of birds and monkies. To get to the beach you have a five minute walk through the village past all the traditional local shops and their friendly owners or there is a spectacular 15 minute walk out of our front entrance and over the dunes. We do it at sun rise every day and it refreshes the soul. I also give a daily afternoon one hour yoga class open to all costing $5.

The SpaceThe main house ground level offers a lovely verandah, a large sitting room, a bathroom/shower and a kitchen. On the second floor there are two bedrooms, the master bedroom and a second bedroom, divided by a bathroom/shower. Both bedrooms open up to a spacious balcony which oversees the garden. The third floor, with its “Makuti” thatched rooftop is a beautiful lounging area, offering a magnificent panoramic view of the ocean. The studio is located opposite the main house. It is divided into a sitting room, a bedroom and a shower/bathroom. Guest AccessThis is a whole house only booking, so whole house will be your's (including the studio) whether you want to use it or not! There are 2 staff members, a cook and a housekeeper, you can provide them a float in order to buy groceries for your meals if you wish. Interaction with GuestsThe staff at the house will be there to help, as I'm not usually there. The NeighborhoodLamu town is a living throwback to the Swahili culture that once dominated the entire Indian Ocean coast. The winding streets, carved woods and traditional houses evoke the everyday sights and sounds of another age, and Lamu’s World Heritage listing is entirely justified, recognised by as the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa. Shela Village is less than an hour’s stroll from Lamu Town but very different. The only thing you're dodging down the narrow lanes are donkeys and bare-footed kids. A tangle of narrow sandy lanes, tall stone houses, some smaller thatched dwellings, mosques, ruins and a spacious square fringed by a few market stalls, small shops and a telephone booth. Getting AroundGuests usually arrive by plane to the airport on Manda, its a short speedboat journey to the house (should cost about 1500 /-). All travel around the area is either walking or speedboat/dhow or donkey in some cases, no cars whatsoever! Other Things to NoteThere is a mosque opposite the house with a PA that points straight into the garden, there are a few "calls to prayer" each day which can be a bit alarming at first. Make sure to bring your favourite drinks and delicacies as you are unlikely to find your favourite wines, champagne and cheeses in Lamu. Depending on the season, all sorts of fresh fruits, vegetables, fresh fish, lobster, crab, prawns and oysters can be ordered and brought to the door.

The SpaceShamba Viking – unique setting with tranquillity and space! Among gently rolling sand dunes of acacias and tropical fruit and nut trees, our Shamba offers 2.5 ha of rare tranquillity. It gives you personal space in the fantastic Lamu Island setting - a place with sun and shade, and a cooling Ocean breeze. The night is starlit with soothing sounds from the foliage of palm trees and - when the wind is from a southerly direction - waves on Shela Beach. The lodge is purpose-designed to be climate adapted and eco-friendly. We invite you to enjoy the uniqueness of our Shamba Lodge. Shamba Viking – a different stage for a different experience. Halfway between Lamu Town and Shela Village, on Lamu Island in the Indian Ocean, Shamba La Familia Ya Viking – or just Shamba Viking - is found. ‘Shamba' means ‘farmstead' or ‘small plantation' in Swahili, and our Shamba is part of a landscape of tropical fruit and nut trees in an old Lamu plantation landscape with gently rolling sand dunes, culminating at greater height along Shela Beach in the south. We have trees of coconut, mango, tamarind and cashew to enjoy the fresh fruits of, season permitting. In this rare setting, Shamba Viking is a different experience. It provides space to take it all in. During the day of most of the year, there is your choice of sun or shade. Lamu is hot and humid, yet on the raised eastern part of the Shamba where our Lodge is located, a cooling breeze is almost always present. Shamba Viking is reached by foot or donkey: 10 minutes from the Ocean; 20 minutes from Lamu Town; 25 minutes from Shela Village; and, 30-40 minutes from Shela Beach. By foot and boat, time to and from Shela is around 15 minutes. Njumba (house) Viking – climate adapted, energy saving and eco-friendly. Perched on a 'hillock' at Shamba Viking's eastern end, is our climate adapted ‘Njumba' or Lodge. Providing views over the Shamba and surrounding landscape, its elongated shape cross-ventilates for comfort. The Lodge is also located, orientated and constructed to minimise solar gain - irrespectively of whether the Monsoon is from the southwest or north-east. Purpose-designed to optimise between privacy and transparency – the lattice walls of the Shamba Lodge let the Ocean breeze reach all its parts. The voluminous, ventilated, roof space and elevated floors – on columns above the ground - assist in cooling. The only heat adsorbing walls, floors and ceilings are in the bathrooms. They allow for privacy, yet they enable air circulation and cooling through specially designed air-cooling wall openings and ceiling funnels. In the coastal climate context, the house is likely to contribute to the discussion on energy saving climate control. In harmony with nature. The Lodge is constructed from low energy building materials, has solar powered lighting and warning water systems, complimented by a grey-water system that returns used water with its nutrients to the land. As part of a Lamu ecological sanitation project, we only use waterless, non-polluting but nutrients recycling, state of the art separation toilets ((website hidden). Uniquely designed and built, the Shamba Viking Lodge has three parts: 2 double/twin bedrooms with shared bathroom and lobby in between – the easternmost bedroom has a roofed wooden deck towards the East and its gentle morning sunrise; 1 double/twin bedroom and 1 kitchen with bathroom and lobby in between – the bedroom has a large, roofed, wooden deck towards the West and its spectacular evening sunset; and, 1 roofed wooden deck for living and dining in between the two other parts - this space may be used as a studio. The bedrooms have single beds that may be placed singly or together with mosquito nets to fit either choice. Thin wooden strips wall matting protects against rain and gives privacy, but allows air though. Curtains for privacy are there. There is also a ceiling fan in each bedroom, and each bedroom has a safety box. The kitchen – with openable panels for contact with the dining/living space - has ample worktop and shelving surfaces, electric hob and oven, micro oven, double basin sink with hot and cold water, two fridges, freezer and washing machine. Each bathroom has warm and cool water. The washbasin - carved out of a coconut tree trunk - is set in ample shelving. There is a shower and toilet. The bathroom is reached through a ventilated lobby. The breezy lounge has open walls towards two sides to let you take in the greenery and undulating landscape. Elevated off the ground, the lounge is great for up to 8-10 people to dine and relax. A pavilion next to the main house provides for breezy conference space for ten - around purpose-designed round table with chairs. Electricity is there. Internet access may be provided on the Shamba through a local telephone operator modem attached to your laptop at nominal cost, or though an Internet café in Lamu town. (website hidden) Renting one, two or three rooms in the main house, you will have access to the dining/sitting room and kitchen - also free mango, tamarind and juice of coconut, season permitting. If you rent a room towards the sunset, you will have your own spacious deck, shower/toilet room with lobby. If you rent a room towards the sunrise, you will have your own deck and own entry access. Shower/toilet room with lobby may be shared with a maximum of two persons. If you rent a room towards the dining/sitting room, you will share shower/toilet room with lobby with a maximum of two persons. As your host(s), I and my family will seek to interact with our guests only on their terms. In trying to give our guests maximum privacy and freedom of access to our Shamba Lodge, we as hosts try to plan our times on Shamba so as not to co-inside with those of our guests. Should we be on Shamba at the same time as our guests, we will prioritise to stay in our cottages away from the main house. Only in exceptional cases would we stay in the main house if it would not be full, and only should guests expressly so wish. The tranquility and space of the lightly undulating sand dune landscape is a treat. Yet it is only a short walk by foot and or trip by boat to Lamu town - which is a UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site - and Shela Village, near fantastic swimming and bathing at untouched, kilometres long, Shela Beach. At night the sky is star lit through the foliage of the palm trees - this scene is sublime when the moon is out! Our contacts will provide you with boat transport, only a few minutes' walk from the Shamba Viking Lodge. You may choose between different boat types - a faster one for the Manda Island airstrip, Lamu town or Shela Village, or, a wide hulled and comfortable Mozambique Dhow for swimming, bathing, fishing and/or sun downer. Lamu Museum and the Fort in Lamu Town, as well as Thakwa ruins on Manda Island are interesting places to see. Also Lamu town and Shela Village! You may enjoy sailing around Lamu Island with lunch prepared by our friends after swiming and bathing! You may sail to Manda Toto (Small Manda) for children's bathing, swimming and snorkeling - lunch cooked for you! Our Staff will only be too happy to advise you on a variety of shops, cafés and restaurants, and they will also be happy to organise a donkey for you to ride! You will be met at Manda airstrip by one of our contacts who will take you at a nominal cost to the nearest jetty on Lamu Island to Shamba Viking. There our Staff will meet you. Usually a donkey or two will carry your luggage to/from the Lodge from/to nearest jetty on Lamu Island from/to airstrip - this is included in the rent. It is fun to stroll in the cosy lanes in Lamu Town or Shela Village. People are friendly and helpful. They will also appreciate your respecting their simple to follow dress code. Guest AccessRenting one room towards sunset with deck and en suite shower/toilet room in the main house, you will have access to the dining/sitting room and kitchen - also free mango, tamarind and juice of coconut, season permitting. Whereas you will need assistance to get to house if you need a wheelchair, house itself is wheelchair accessible. The SpaceTtunu is one of Lamu’s loveliest and most characterful houses – its English owner, an accomplished interior designer, has restored, decorated and furnished it with great taste and ‘shabby chic’ style. All the walls are finished in a very attractive honey-coloured niru plaster, with an antique ‘stippled’ effect throughout. Originally dating back to the early 1800s, Ttunu was completely renovated and extended five years ago, and guests always comment on its very special, peaceful atmosphere and wonderful ‘vibes’. Guest AccessTtunu’s spacious ground floor, which includes entrance hall, courtyard, kitchen, pantry, dining gallery and reception galleries, have particularly high ceilings and lovely turquoise-painted cross beams. They look out onto the large and private walled garden - planted with palm trees, red & white hibiscus and white frangipani – to name just a few of its flourishing plants and flowers. A raised pergola terrace smothered in pink and white bougainvillea, with expansive baraza seating is a nice, quiet and shady place to dine or to relax. On the first floor is an airy dining terrace overlooking the garden, and a secluded courtyard living area open to the sky and lined with baraza bench seats – a perfect space for entertaining and stargazing. Adjoining the courtyard are a charming, intimate sitting room with relaxing baraza sofa area, and two single bedrooms with antique Swahili four poster beds. Each room has an en-suite bathroom. On the second floor is the master bedroom – large and l-shaped with a spacious en-suite bathroom. It is quietly situated to the rear of the house, looking out over Ttunu’s and other neighbouring gardens. Running the entire length of the front of the house is a generous terrace – partly covered with a bougainvillea and jasmine-clad pergola, and partly makuti-thatched. Outside the second bedroom (again with ensuite bathroom) is a nice, private seating area with baraza seating. The third floor makuti-thatched roof terrace is a lovely place to relax and enjoy panoramic views across rooftops and gardens to the Lamu Channel and Manda Island. Interaction with GuestsAny questions prior to or during your stay can be directed to the owner (based in Nairobi) via email or phone call. Any concerns can be voiced and do not hesitate to ask for further advice! The NeighborhoodIt's incredibly quiet, with the mosque situated next door for interludes of call to prayer, adding to the magical atmosphere. The house is situated in the midst of the Old Town, with caring neighbours and the utmost privacy for all. It is a five minute walk from the Lamu Fort/town square and among some of the oldest houses in the settlement. Getting AroundDonkeys? Dhows? Who needs cars? Walking around is enough of an experience to soak up the atmosphere. Besides, there are only two cars on the island! Other Things to NoteWhile Lamu town is one of the safest places in Kenya, be aware of people (mostly washed up rastas) begging for money for food - additionally, be prepared to bargain for almost anything, otherwise you will get ripped off!

The SpaceKizingo is far, far away from this stereotype. In so many ways it is the antidote to 21st century life. Kizingo is a beach and coastal wilderness. Nature, completely untouched, has been left to her own devices. You’ll share the beach with native birds, driftwood and scuttling crabs. There you’ll find a true sense of the infinity of time; and the timelessness of an old Africa. As one guest put it, life at Kizingo is “dangerously relaxed”. You’ll eat deliciously fresh fish, fruit, vegetables and home-made bread. You’ll gather in the early evening for drinks around the bar. Dressing for dinner means, at most, a clean shirt and kikoy, never a tie or shoes (“no news, no shoes” to quote another guest). Kizingo is, for many, a life-changing experience. Kizingo does not have: television, video, dvd, computer games, jet skis, jet lag, telephones, a conference centre, retail display cabinets in Reception (in fact, it doesn’t even have a Reception), newspapers, a swimming pool, hassle, hurly-burly, hairdryers, quad bikes, loud or piped music, people who sell things on the beach, minibars, air conditioning, a single pretension, inflated prices, much of a profit motive, anything artificial… Kizingo does have: wild, untouched beaches; sand that’s talcum powder fine; dry, equatorial heat made luxurious by whispering wind; sunsets so breathtaking they stretch credulity; a blessed near-total absence of mosquitoes; calmness but not stillness, because everything sways and dances to nature; wonderful local staff; a happy, hospitable atmosphere; the eclectic and often eccentric company of people you won’t meet at home; the divine freedom to do little or nothing, or to swim with dolphins, to witness a turtle laying her eggs, to do heroic battle with serious fish, to potter, to explore, to water-ski, to kite surf… Kizingo is: exquisite simplicity, not pseudo-sophistication; always natural, never synthetic; real, not contrived; timeless, not transitory; deep tissue massage for the soul and spirit; nourishment for the mind; man as nature’s junior partner; life as it should be. Interaction with GuestsWe love to hang out with our guests and we are also just as happy letting people enjoy the place alone if they prefer. We also have a team of great and friendly staff who are around when when you need them. The NeighborhoodI love the 9 miles of unspoilt beach to walk along, swimming with Dolphines just off our coast line, living on a little but diverse island, the ancient town of Lamu and its friendly People Getting AroundLamu has no Roads and only one Car! The SpaceYou enjoy a stunning location really, maybe the best in Lamu : you are on the beach, some meters only from Shella Village and Peponi Terrace, with stunning 270° sea-views on Indian Ocean. It's the very spot where decades ago a watch-post stood (Forodhani means watch-post in Kiswahili) controlling the to and fro of boats entering and leaving Lamu Island. Here you will relax fully, get lulled by the lapping waves, pamper yourself with good cooking, massages and yoga, enjoy the 12kms long pristine white sand beach and its activities… sailing, swimming, snorkelling, running, kite, windsurf, wakeboard or waterski, fishing… you can also explore, discover Lamu Old Town, a Unesco World Heritage Site, and Shella Village, experience the rich Swahili culture and its very welcoming atmosphere... And take the most of Nature, which is truly at its best. The house is white, with round or Arabic arches which frame sea views, sky at day or night. It features 5 bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms (sleeps 10-12 guests), lots of different terraces, lounging areas to take it easy, a airy and spacy main lounge, a garden, a pool. And from Forodhani House, because of its so particular location, the show is always there : you are having breakfast and you happen suddenly to see school of sardines jumping, trying to escape barracudas, or dolphins swimming up the Channel, or a fisherman’s dhow sliding from one arch to the other, coming from the open seas with load of tunas. Forodhani House comes with 5 professional, friendly staff, among them an excellent cook.

Baobab House is the perfect beachfront property for a peaceful vacation surrounded by nature. Wake up to the sound of African bird songs; swim in the warm Indian Ocean; walk on miles of sandy beach, where you will rarely encounter people. Relax under the baobabs and watch the sun setting over the dunes.Previous guests have raved about the quality of the staff including Bernard's excellent cooking. This private house is on an acre of beachfront property with five large ancient baobab trees. The Baobab tree is indigenous, some of them more than 500 years old, with many beautiful stories, and they give a peaceful atmosphere throughout the whole property. Alongside the Baobabs, there are also several acacias, another indigenous tree, providing shady areas when you have had enough sun on the beach. There is a large open veranda that runs across the front of the house with cushioned seating, hanging swing beds and dining under a thatched palm (makuti) roof. The house is decorated with Swahili chairs, local kikoi's are used for pillow covers and the whole house breathes a simple, elegant, beach atmosphere. The ground floor has two double bedrooms with ocean views and ensuite bathrooms. One of the bedrooms has a veranda off the back which opens into the back garden with a large shaded sitting area more hanging swing beds. The kitchen and store are also on the ground floor. The second floor has a large open space, most of which is covered by a makuti roof. On the terrace are built-in benches where you can gaze at the stars at night. There is a third double bedroom, which is open on all sides to the breeze and views. There is also a third bathroom on this floor as well as areas which can be used as additional outdoor sleeping space. All the beds have mosquito netting. Internet available five minute walk away at Diamond Beach Village for less than two Euros per day (200 Kenyan Shillings,1.7 Euro) Baobab House is set in a secluded garden dominated by five giant Baobab trees. The house comes fully staffed with a cook and fisherman often show up at the door with their fresh catch. You can walk right onto the long, practically empty, beach, from the front doorstep, or take a walk into the island interior from the garden in the back. Down the beach to the left is the casual Blue Moon bar and restaurant with pizza oven and to the right you will find the five star bar and restaurant at The Majlis. Close to all the activities of the area and secluded in your own private house and garden, you have the best of all there is to offer. " ... speechless ... " Tom "I have travelled a lot and seen many beautiful places ... none compare to here. I absolutely fell in love with Manda beach and the Baobab House. A little paradise. Till next time!" Hanna the one thing that make a place like this perfect is the caretaking team. Bernard & his team kept amazing us

Cast into the Indian Ocean off the coast of Kenya, the island and town of Lamu is heir to a distinctive tradition over a thousand years old. The Swahili culture and style of Lamu are a mix of East African, Omani, Yemeni, Indian, and some Portuguese and Victorian influences. Of all the old Swahili towns of East Africa, Lamu is one of the very few remaining substantially intact. It is the humidity; It is the heat; it is the aroma of the town; the scent of the tropics; the donkeys and their droppings; the bui-bui's of the women; the kanzu's and kikoi's of the men; the intense brilliance of the midday sky, demanding a nap; the glare of the whitewashed stone houses; the strong winds blowing off the ocean, rustling the strands of the makuti roofs, stripping the stone houses of their lime-whitewash and ruining your CD-player; the Portuguese cannons on the waterfront; the absence of cars; the narrowness of the streets which shades the heat and barely allows two donkeys to pass each other; the majestic architecture of the galleries and harem rooms of the patrician Stone Houses; the mix of Arabic, Indian and African tongues and cultures, lovingly called Swahili

For sure you can really have a fantastic time and we will make sure of this ! Karibu sana for peaceful and wonderful holidays :-) Shela is a village about 2 miles from Lamu Town. The origin of the village is unknown, but according to tradition it was settled by people from nearby Manda Island. In 1813 the elite of Pate Island, allied with the Mazrui clan from Oman, attempted to subjugate Lamu in the Battle of Shela. This attempt failed totally, and the defeat of Pate at Shela signalled the rise of Lamu as the leading power in the archipelago. Shela's golden age was from 1829 to 1857, when 5 of its 6 mosques were constructed. It is especially known for the Friday mosque. Shela is now a centre for tourism on the island, with several guest houses feature by the coast. Shela is also home to the most spectacular beaches on Lamu island. The appearance of the area is much more in keeping with the imagined East African coastline, with its almost pure white sand, traditional dhows, and clean appearance. It makes a sharp contrast to Lamu town (directly opposite the airstrip on Manda) which lacks a beach and functions as a relatively busy port.
