The SpaceThis room has 2 single beds that join to make a 'king size'. It is not air-conditioned, but a ventilator/fan in summer or a heater in winter, will be provided. It has its own private bathroom. Wireless internet is available and parking is mostly easy. Bedroom is on the first floor. It is not an apartment! The room is part of a 3 bedroom, recently converted 300 year old house of character. We've only been living in the house for the past 5 years. We are a young couple who love travelling, love meeting people, have a passion for the theatre, music, and the sea. Cooking is also a great (URL HIDDEN) for a little extra we can also provide dinner! However you have full access and use to our kitchen, so you are more then welcome to cook your own meals! Our neighborhood is quiet and quaint. Most of the houses are converted old townhouses. Every Wednesday and Friday there is a market 2 streets away from us. A bakery round the corner provides fresh bread every morning and a few corner shops satisfy all the daily needs. Amenities and public transport are within reach of the house and the neighbourhood is safe. The closest bus stop is 5 minutes walk to our house and the bus number is 31. However there are other bus stops and buses that service our area with a 10/15 minutes walking distance. You can check the PublicTransport Malta website for more details - search the word tallinjacard online. Birkirkara is one of Malta's most central towns with access to and from various roads. It is very close to the University of Malta and the general Hospital (Mater Dei). Guest AccessThere is currently only one room not accessible to our guests....our bedroom with its ensuite! Otherwise, you can make use of the kitchen (there's also a BBQ in our small yard), the dining room, the living room and the laundry! Interaction with GuestsWe are fresh first time parents - our son was born in January 2014. A year full of new experiences has passed and our son is a joyful, loving bunch of cuddles. However if a crying toddler is too much for you too handle, then it is best to avoid us for the time being! Otherwise, we love a good conversation so it all depends on whether our timetables coincide :) The NeighborhoodOur neighborhood is typical of a Maltese traditional village. Our house is situated in one of the older areas of Birkirkara and the notorial archives claim that the house is at least 300years old. Even though that means that our neighborhood has been around for such a long time, all basic amenities can be found in the area. Birkirkara is one of the largest, oldest and most heavily populated city in the centre of Malta with 25,775 inhabitants in an area of 2.7 km2. The Old Railway Station, a memory from Malta’s railway past, can be found in Birkirkara and can still be visited today, with a public garden around it. Malta’s perhaps most beautiful church, St Helen Basilica can also be found in this town. Besides its beauty, the church is also famous for having Malta’s largest bell. St Helen is also the main religious feast in Birkirkara and the main attraction of the feast is a procession during which, a large wooden statue of St Helen (created by Maltese Salvu Psaila) is carried through the city. The procession leaves the basilica at 08:00 to return at 10:45 on the first Sunday following the 18th of August. The timing of the procession is unique as these events usually take place in the evening. Birkirkara has grown over the years and become an important commercial centre. Birkirkara is famous for its football club Birkirkara F.C and also for the floodings in the village after heavy rainfall. This problem occurs since Birkirkara is located in a valley, catching waters from from Naxxar, Balzan and Attard. Today most of Birkirkara is modern but the town still kept some of its traditional Maltese characteristics of narrow streets and alleys. The city’s older part is separated from the newer part by a small garden. The larger houses in the town are often used as band clubs or offices for political parties. Things to do and see: St Helens Church: The church is a very fine example of baroque architecture on Malta and was built in 1727. The church is most famous for its large bell, installed around 1932 and the statue of St. Helen, which was completed in 1837 by the Maltese artist Salvu Psaila. Ta’ Ganu Windmill: The windmill is located on Naxxar road and is one of the few remaining windmills in Malta. Ta’ Ganu Windmill was built in the earlier part of the eighteenth century during the principate of Portuguese Grandmaster Antonio Manoel de Vilhena. The building has recently been restored. The Old Railway station: The railway only had one single line, which ran from Valletta to Rabat and was set up due to the demands for better transport. The sidings and the forecourt were moved into a public garden during the restoration in 1970. Aqueduct: This aqueduct was founded in 1610 by Grand Master Wignacourt, and was used to bring water from Rabat to Valletta. A large section of the 16-km (10-mile) can still be seen in Birkirkara. Getting AroundPublic transport access is available within short walking distance on 3 different routes - the service provider is called Malta Public Transport and the fares can be seen on the tallinjacard website. If on the other hand you want to rent a car, bike or quadbike, parking around Malta is free in most places - unless it's a private car park. Around our house, parking is relatively easy most of the time but it can become a bit crowded sometimes! We can provide pick-up from airport at no extra charge when booking 4 nights or more! Otherwise, we can coordinate a Taxi Pick-up and the normal rate is of 20 Euro 1-way, irrespective of number of people. However, we cannot guarantee that we can take you back to the airport on departure because it depends on whether it's a working day and also on the time of day. If we're available we'll help you out no worries :) If we're not available, you can either call a taxi or else catch the bus. Other Things to NoteBirkirkara a Central Town so we are within reach of all areas of the Island. Malta is pretty small so distances are relatively short and you can visit more then 1 place of interest in an afternoon. If you let us know before your visit what your interests are, we can help give you loads of advice on where to visit and what to see - whether it's culture & history, gastronomy, adventure or nature, health, leisure & fitness or a buzzing nightlife you're after...we can direct you to it!

Apart from the churches, the oldest buildings in the town are the windmills. One is a private residence, the other, at the heart of the town, is an art gallery. Known locally as `Ta' Ganu' it hosts exhibitions by local and foreign artists. There are about six churches. One of them is St Helena Basilica. It has got the largest church bell in Malta. The main feast in B'Kara is celebrated on the 18th August. B'Kara's feast is special because the procession takes place in the morning rather then in the evening. At the outskirts of B'Kara near Mriehel area one can find the Aqueducts, which were constructed by Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt to provide water for the new city - Valletta. Up to 1931 Malta had its own railway lines that ran from Valletta to Mdina. In B'Kara one can find a railway station, which was used by those times. Although now it is changed to a garden, it's a good idea to go and visit the Old Railway Station. Another mark of the old times in B'Kara is the windmill. Windmills were used extensively but now they are only something of the past.' Market Days in Birkirkara on Wednesday & Friday mornings, near St.Helen's Church, just 10 minutes walk away from the apartment. Shopping in TOWN: Triq il- Wied is the main road where may shops selling clothes and other accessories are found. Gardens: The public gardens of San Anton, open to the public since 1882, are laid out in a formal manner, with graceful walkways, sculptures, ornamental ponds, families of ducks and swans, and a small aviary. They contain a large variety of trees and flowers from around the world, including a variety of palm trees, cypress, jacarandas, araucarias and other exotic plants, some of them over three centuries old. For many years it has been customary for visiting Heads of State to plant a tree in memory of their stay in Malta. The gardens also contain an orangerie, and it was once the practice of incumbent Governors to give baskets of oranges grown in the palace gardens as gifts at Christmas time.San Anton Gardens is a nice 20 minute walk away.

The village of Birkirkara: Birkirkara, situated in the central region of Malta, is the largest population centre on the Islands and has been so since the middle Ages. Birkirkara was listed as one of the original 12 medieval parishes in 1436. It continued to flourish until it splintered into separate parishes. Today, the parish church is still known as `Matrici' which means it is the mother of the other neighbouring parishes. Another interesting church is the old parish church dedicated to The Assumption. Most of present-day Birkirkara is modern, though the town retains a traditional core characterised by alleyways, narrow streets and houses typical of small villages. The larger town houses tend to be used as headquarters for band clubs or political parties. A tiny garden separates the town's older area from the new quarters. Here you can see one of the old railway stations on the commuter line that ran from Rabat to Valletta.
