Marfil is an old part of the silver mining era, and my house is built on the ruins of an old hacienda which extracted silver from the ore. The river walk below passes many of these restored ruins, one of which is a country club with day use if you wish to play sports or swim. Marfil is like a small village set only a few minutes from downtown Guanajuato and a welcome respite after a busy noisy day in the thick of the city. You can buy everything you need within a few minutes walk from the house. The house has a secluded garden with a teak table and chairs for dining, reading, or chatting. There are two other indoor dining rooms, modular living room and a TV room, 2 and 1/2 baths, all sheets, towels, etc., and a fully equipped kitchen. One bedroom has a kingsize bed that can become two twins and the other bedroom has two twin beds that can become a king and a twin size couch that is also a bed. There is a DVD player and many DVD´s in diverse genres. Fans are available if needed but the climate here is gorgeous all year and heat and AC are really not needed. Cool nights, warm days. You need to buy a phone card or use your own cell phone. Guest AccessDetails are covered in the above description. Additional questions may be asked. Interaction with GuestsAs much as we need to! The NeighborhoodLike living in a small town with all services a minute's walk away, yet downtown Gto. is just 5 to 7 minutes on the bus. Very quiet, but lots to do. Getting AroundBus stop 2 minutes walk away. Taxis at corner or taxi number to call for house pickup.

The SpaceThis apartment is in the second floor and has big windows that show an amazing view of downtown Guanajuato from the kitchen and one bedroom. It has two bedrooms and it's optimal for 4 people but can fit up to 5 without and extra fee. Guest AccessTo the whole apartment, the washer and dryer in the third floor and the entrance patio. Interaction with GuestsI'll probably not be around much but there is always someone in or around the property from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm in case something is needed. The NeighborhoodWe are located in downtown Guanajuato (look us up on maps as "Alameda54") in the corner of Alameda street and the subterranean Ponciano Aguilar. It's far enough that is quiet but close enough that it takes less that 5 minutes walking to be at the main attractions of the city (Teatro Juárez, Jardín de la unión, Universidad de Guanajuato). Getting AroundParking: There are two options, one is to leave the car in the tunnels next to the property, is safe and free, the other one is to use the public parking "Las huertas" which is less than 100 yards away on the same road.

The SpaceBeautiful Mexican style loft, conveniently located in Guanajuato downtown, city declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. Located 200 meters away from the Alhondiga de Granaditas museum, inaugurated in 1803 and just a 10-minute walk from the Mummies of Guanajuato museum and the Hidalgo's market. Also within a walking distance (8 minutes away) you can discover the 'Kiss alley' (Callejón del Beso) or enjoy the historical downtown, home of the beautiful University of Guanajuato, the Juarez Theatre, the Basilica of Guadalupe and many other emblematic squares and alleys, where you can find many acclaimed restaurants and cafes, or you could take the cable car to the Pipila's lookout, and admire a magnificent view of the city. The loft is inside a building declared by the National Institute of Anthropology and History as a historical site, just by the 'Tepetapa Bridge', a beautiful XIX century bridge where the famous underground street -ranked as one of the thirteen wonders of Mexico- runs beneath. You can enjoy these relaxing on the terrace that is available for you. Guest AccessCable TV, wi-fi internet, cleaning before the arrival and if you stay for longer than a week it is once a week. Fully equipped kitchen (broiler, microwave, fridge, blender, coffee maker and dining ware) There's a shared terrace where you can rest, sunbath, enjoy a cup of coffee while reading a book or organize a BBQ. Interaction with GuestsI can give you tips and information about your visit in Guanajuato. I always recieve the guests and I am available for any questions you may have. The NeighborhoodThe neighborhood is pretty nice, from the terrace you can admire the urban landscape composed by all the colorful houses in the city. Besides, the location of the loft is unbeatable, it's only a few minutes walking from all the touristic sites. Getting AroundThe best option in Guanajuato is to walk because it is very small. But there is also a bus stop in the street that takes you to the Bus Station in order to travel outside the city. And taxis are very cheap, so you can have that option too. The nearest airport is the "Aeropuerto Internacional del Bajío" Other Things to NoteThere's no parking lot on the property, but you can use a public parking located 2 blocks away from the loft.

The SpaceIf you like what you see here but the calendar is full, please check out the other spaces available in this House of the Well: there is another adorable room with private bath; as well as the studio apartment! PLEASE NOTE that to arrive here one must walk: either one walks up or one walks down, but walk one must. If you have any issues with stairs, either up or down, please seek other accommodations. Lovely room with private bath, in an architectural gem of a private home. Kitchen privileges. Various sunny terraces with panoramic views of the beautiful City of Guanajuato. The only off-limits part of the house is the music room which is my workspace. The room has two single beds which together form a queen-size bed, so that it works for a couple, for two friends travelling together, or for a single individual. Guest AccessMost important of all, the great common area of the city of Guanajuato and its cultural offering, astounding for a city of this size (population ca. 175,000). Between book presentations, art openings, the university’s Cine-Club, poetry readings, concerts, and lectures on various topics, one could be occupied five nights out of seven, and two or three afternoons. Doesn’t leave much time to enjoy the increasing number of good restaurants here! Here in the house, you are warmly invited to come up to the roof-terrace where the sun hits first in the morning; and to enjoy the sunset with a glass of something. In reality, all the public spaces in this house are here to be enjoyed: the azotea, the central patio, the little north patio with the laundry. Really, THE ONLY OFF-LIMITS AREA IS THE PIANO ROOM WHICH IS MY OWN WORK-SPACE. And of course, if there’s a house-concert here in the Casa del Pozo, you are warmly invited! CLEANING: Weekly cleaning is included in your rent. If you’d like Sra Yolanda to come in and tidy up in between times, the cost is 100 pesos per cleaning. Interaction with GuestsThis is the home of a working artist. I share this space with my guests, however short or long their stay here may be. If I am here, I am as available as my work permits. And as always, if there is a concert here in this House of the Well, my guests are cordially invited! The NeighborhoodThis is a people’s and not a rich-folks’ neighbourhood, and in an Iberoamerican city, so you will hear roosters, dogs, and the occasional outburst of ranchera music; but it is all quite inoffensive. This barrio is friendly, lively, safe. We are 8 minutes’ walk from the Jardín de la Unión and from the Juárez, Cervantes, and Principal theatres –the latter being where the Symphony performs every Friday during the university year-; as well as the Museo Iconográfico and Casa Cuatro where there are also concerts and numerous other events. Getting AroundEasy access in taxi, microbús and on foot; there is also a private (locked) access coming down from the Panorámica. Guanajuato was not built with the automobile in mind ;=)) ... Nevertheless, should you need to bring a car, with a little advance notice my neighbour just above on the Panorámica usually has an extra parking space: cost is 150 pesos / night, 350 / month; anything in between is negotiable. Public parking lots cost 12 to 15 pesos/hour. (I do not recommend finding "free" parking in a tunnel: it may well cost you the repair of your windshield.) If you arrive in a car, you will almost certainly park it and forget about it until you leave: this city is far easier to navigate walking, in public transit, or if necessary in a taxi. Other Things to NoteI love this city very much – even knowing as I do that we have a lot of things to improve here, I love it very much. And I want the people who come here to visit, whether for three days or three months, to also have affection for it.

The SpacePerched high amongst the treetops on the central south-facing hillside of the heart of Guanajuato, our casita is a slice of heaven. With a view to die for, this spectacular split level studio floats above the hustle and bustle of the centro, but it is only a 3 minute walk down to the Plaza de la Paz, the Jardin or the Alhondiga. Surrounded by both covered and un-covered terraces, Casita Rosa is a spectacular spot from which to explore Guanajuato or hole away and write your opus, inspired by the extraordinary sparkling city below. Birds sing in the trees and fly in flocks beneath you, church bells ring in the Basilica and music wafts up the hillside. There is NO car access - Guanajuato is a largely pedestrian city, and our house is on a callejon, which means "carless street". While you can take a taxi to about one block uphill from our home and walk down, it is not suitable for people who are out-of-shape or hate to walk. Interaction with GuestsWe mainly rent Casa Rosa during the summer months when we are not here. But our neighbor Rosario, in the house below us on the hillside, will welcome and look after you. She is also one of the best masseuse we know and offers authentic Mexican sweat-lodges (temescals) at weekends. The NeighborhoodWe absolutely love our neighborhood. It's very family-centric and community oriented - everyone knows everyone and the callejones are full of children playing hopscotch or soccer. The children are very polite and like to practice their three words of English with anyone who looks like they might understand. Most of the people who live in our neighborhood are families who have been here forever, and often grown siblings will own houses next door to each other. There are several excellent small fruit/vegetable/grocery markets just up the hill from us, even closer, or at least more on the level, than the centro. You can buy most of what you'd need there without going downhill, the exceptions being wine or alcohol. You can buy beer everywhere. Also up the hill in our little "neighborhood center" you can get fresh-squeezed juices, homemade ice cream and, on weekends, delicious goat-meat tacos. Getting AroundGuanajuato is mostly a pedestrian city. It is great for people who like to walk! But there are also excellent inexpensive taxis that will take you all over the place (seemingly when only trying to go a short distance - but that's the crazy twisty one-way streets of Guanajuato). You can take a taxi from the bottom of the hill to the car street one block above Casita Rosa, and walk down from there. It might seem like you're driving forever to go a short distance, but it's a great way to see the city. There is also an excellent and very cheap public bus system that goes all over the city, but it helps to speak Spanish and know the city. Still, it can be a fun adventure to explore the city by bus, and often there'll be musicians. When giving directions to a TAXI driver, tell them to go to the RAMPA DE LOS ELOTEROS EN EL CERRO DEL CUARTO. Other Things to NoteWe're very sorry but our home is not suitable for young children. There is a floating staircase and several other open places where kids could fall. (Very clumsy people or sleep walkers might want to look elsewhere as well.)

The SpaceAlma del Sol is an old stone and adobe house in Guanajuato's beautiful, historic center. Available are four ample rooms, each with its own bathroom, including two suites. All are decorated with artist and traveler Carol Summers' own collection of folk textiles from all over the world, with an emphasis on India. The view from the rooftop garden, bar, and dining room is absolutely grand. We are right next to a 250 year - old Jesuit Church, "Templo de la Compañía," offering an exquisite display of the magnificent architecture of the colonial period. Alma’s location could not be better, a short walk from the University and most museums—including The Diego Rivera Museum, El Museo del Pueblo, and El Museo Alhóndiga de Granaditas. Also nearby are the spectacular Teatro Juarez and two lively meeting places, the Jardín de la Unión and the Plaza de la Paz. A number of good restaurants , serving both Mexican and international cuisine , are just steps away. Interaction with GuestsI will be accompanying guests during every breakfast in order to provide assistance in planning your day so as to ensure an enjoyable visit to Guanajuato. Please feel free to ask about coordinating a spontaneous printmaking workshop; I would be glad to share some tricks of the trade! Other Things to NoteIf you would like to make a reservation for more than one room, please complete a separate reservation for each of the rooms.

Short walk from historic center most tourist attractions just 10 minutes walking. Take the Presa-Sn Javier public transportation at the corner and enjoy the rest of the City's surroundings. My house is on a small street uphill, it is not suitable for people who are out-of-shape or hate to walk --- Ask the driver to leave you at gate --- Sorry Not allowed electrical heaters during the winter, with double mat is enough in this city --- No hot water at the bathroom sink SHOWER ONLY!! --- I don't use pesticides, so it's totally normal to see (from time to time) some ant or small spider harmless to health. By the way! Please read carefully the services tab in each ad; do not expect or demand more amenities than we offer. Feel free to leave your holiday book for the next guest . Gracias! The SpaceIf you like what you see here in this House of the Well but the calendar is full, please do check out the other spaces available here: there are two adorable rooms each with its own private bath, plus kitchen privileges! Adorable studio apartment with its own independent entrance, also connected to the main house. Full of light and very cozy. Completely-equipped kitchen with all-new good knives and batterie de cuisine; all sheets (flannel for winter, cotton for summer!) and towels provided. A sweet small terrace full of plants and lovely views. Completely independent entrance but may also be entered through the main house. You are invited to enjoy the azotea (roof terrace) and central patio. Please note that to arrive here one must walk: either one walks up or one walks down, but walk one must. Guanajuato was not built with the automobile in mind ;=)) We are 8 minutes’ walk from the Juárez, Cervantes, and Principal Theatres and from the Jardín de la Unión; some 12 minutes’ walk from the principal building of the University. This place is ideal for a visiting scholar or student at the Uni. Easy to arrive on foot, via minibus or taxi; there is also a locked access down from the Panorámica. WASHING MACHINE available in the main house: I ask 50 pesos per load to help cover wear and tear on the machine, and I provide detergent. Light averages 70 pesos/month. Gas is basically under your own control: to minimize usage you must remember to turn up the boiler before you bathe and turn it back down afterwards! Average is 200 pesos/month. PARKING ... is available with my neighbour just above on the Panorámica: short-term, 150 pesos/night; longer-term, 350 pesos/month; anything in between is negotiable. This is a people's, not a rich-folks' neighbourhood: so you will hear roosters and dogs and the occasional outburst of ranchera music; but it is all very agreeable. As of 1 January 2013 I am raising my prices for the first time since I started hosting on AIRBNB, mostly because I want to be able to better pay the woman who helps me with housework. People who do this work tend to be very underpaid here, and I would like to do my part to remedy that situation. Each room comes with kitchen privileges: I ask only that you take good care of my pots and pans, my knives, and the Talavera dishes. Interaction with GuestsThis is the home of a working artist. I try to share this space with my guests, however short or long their stay here may be. If I am here, I am as available as my work permits. And as always, if there is a concert here in this House of the Well, my guests are cordially invited! The NeighborhoodThis is a people's, not a rich folks', neighbourhood, in an Ibero-American city. So you will hear goats, dogs, and the occasional outburst of ranchera music: but it is all generally quite inoffensive. Éste es un barrio amable, vivo, seguro. Getting AroundThere are many convenient ways to get around here. To start with, walking! It is faster to get to many places in Guanajuato on foot than it is on wheels. However, we also have good public transit. There is a mini-bus stop right at the foot of my callejón. You can arrive above on another mini-bus and walk about 200M to the door. Or you can take a taxi to arrive above. Other Things to NoteThe cultural offering in Guanajuato is extraordinary considering the size of this city: 175,000 people. Between book presentations, poetry readings, concerts, and other events, one could be busy here five out of seven nights of the week, and several afternoons. Barely leaves time to enjoy the increasing number of good restaurants we have here!

The SpaceThis studio apartment is located in a house on one of the oldest alleys in the city. You won't find a more beautiful apt in Guanajuato. Excellent location on the edge of downtown- on a quiet and peaceful alley. The living area is furnished with high quality minimalist furniture: an upholstered chair and loveseat, small coffee tables, as well as a generous sized dining table with two chairs. Plenty of closet space. A separate sleeping space with a matrimonial bed is located behind a half-height wall. Full kitchen, including stove with oven, and polished concrete counters inlaid with glass and stones, and a breakfast bar. The bathroom is spacious and bright. The apt is approximately 400 sq ft / 40m2, a perfect size for 1 or 2 people. Guests have access to a second floor terrace just outside the apt, and a 100m2 roof terrace with 360 degree views of the city and mountains. The view from the second floor terrace is beautiful, while the view from the roof terrace is spectacular. The apt is located on a little hill set in the center of the city, which allows for the great views. The apt is on the edge of downtown, next to the Jardín Embajadoras, a 2 minute walk to one of the two public markets in Guanajuato, and an easy ~10 minute walk to the Jardín de la Unión, the center of Guanajuato cultural life (restaurants, bars, music). Since the apt is not on the slope of one of the mountains rising around the city center, it is about as flat as Guanajuato can be. The location is easily accessible by car, bus or taxi. Some street parking is available. Rental fee includes weekly cleaning service. Guests have access to a washer and dryer at no extra charge. If you need transportation to or from the airport (or anywhere else), or a tour guide, we can recommend an excellent person. Hosts are a US/Mexican couple, fluent in Spanish and English. Guest AccessLavadora y secadora. Agua purificada.

The SpaceJust steps from the Alhóndiga de Granaditas, Plazuela San Fernando, Diego Rivera Museum and the Mercado Hidalgo and a few minutes walk to Plaza de la Paz, Teatro Juarez and the Jardin Union, the house is hugely comfortable, brightly colored, and filled with art from all over the world. Also nearby are delicious restaurants, folk art stores, cafes, galleries, museums, and 3 plazas where spontaneous performance and/or music frequently occur. The house includes an overly large living room with two sitting areas, street view balcony, formal dining room, TV room, kitchen with breakfast area, three spacious bedrooms, upstairs patio, rooftop observation deck, 2 master bathrooms and one ½ bath. There are 2 king size beds, and 2 twins (can be king, please ask). Also included in the rental are wifi, satellite TV, DVD player, drinking water, well-equipped kitchen, linens and daily maid service. This house is situated on a main street making it convenient for taxi service and easy and safe walking just right outside the door. On many evenings, the famous estudiantinas walk past the house on their callejoneadas filling the house with robust songs and music – an experience that never fails to draw you out onto the balcony to wave at the parade of joyous followers. We sometimes call the house La Casa de la Risa – the funhouse, because it's a place with it's own amusement – both inside and out. We hope our renters come with a sense of curiosity and humor as Guanajuato (and Mexico) has a different kind of spontaneous and often humorous atmosphere. The house is perfect for artistically minded people who want to experience the vibrancy of Guanajuato, yet still have space and tranquility at the end of the day. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. ** No pets and no smoking in the house. Guest AccessEntire house Getting AroundThe house is at the end of calle Positos near the Alhóndiga and around the corner from the Mercodo Hildago. Calle Positos houses a number of museums, most famously the Museo Diego Rivera - the house where Rivera grew up as a child. El Jardin Union, Teatro Juarez, Plaza de la Paz, and the Basilica are all within a 5 minute walk. Nearby are several good restaurants, folk art stores, convenience stores and a large grocery store. Other Things to NoteTrue to typical Guanajuato architecture, this is a three-story house with the main living areas on the 2nd and 3rd levels. The stairways are made of stone and plenty wide with a fairly low rise and railings, however people who have limited mobility may be challenged with so many steps.

Our offsite Guest Services Manager is a phone call away. The NeighborhoodCasa Terraza is in a family based neighborhood. From Carrizo, looking up the Callejon Carrizo, the building on the right is bright orange and green and the building on the left is purple and green. The traffic circle at the base of Carrizo is called Glorieta Tepetapa. Glorieta translates to roundabout or traffic circle. On the other side of the glorieta is the original train station. It is now a public park and sometimes holds festivals, small carnivals etc. Parking is available on Tepetapa as Casa Terraza does not have it’s own parking lot but be careful not to park where the yellow trucks are. They have a city designated space outlined in yellow. These are moving trucks that an-yone can book on a days notice. You can also park on Carizzo beside the muffler repair shop. At the far end of the train station, there is paid public parking, 24 hours per day. There are often tour buses in this lot. Coming down the steps in the morning there are a couple of food vendors that set up between 6 am and 2 pm. They serve the traditional consume soup with pork for breakfast. The vendor on the traffic island makes fresh tacos. Other vendors set up in the evening. It is a non stop street food scene. The closest bank machine is up the hill. Look for the bus stop just up from Pepe’s hair salon. This is the road Tepetapa. Just up the hill from the bus stop, there is a Caja Popular. Don’t walk too fast, you will miss it. There is a separate door into the cash machine. The fee at the Caja Popular is the lowest in Guanajuato at 17.4 pesos for withdrawal. The machine is able to disperse 15,000 pesos which is more than many other banks in town. Garbage collection is communal. It is recommended you take your food garbage out daily due to the heat. There are two bins. One on Carrizo just beside the muffler repair shop and the other on Tepetapa up the hill from the Caja Popular. They are emptied twice a day as they service so many families. Across from the Caja Popular, there is a pharmacy. There is a torta and quesadilla vendor on the train station side of the glorieta. They cook their meat in a cut out oil drum over wood and you can see the smoke billowing. Bbq’d pork and chorizo in a bun is called a Campechana. This costs about 25 peso and is enough for a meal. You put your own fixings on it or have it to go and they will do it for you. Down the hill from the glorieta is an Oxxo store. There you can top up your cell phone and buy your milk. At the Carrizo corner of the glorieta is an internet cafe and copy shop. You can take your memory stick and they will print off what you need. They also sell stationary supplies. At the corner of Carrizo and Casa Terraza’s callejon, there is a vendor on the left in the brick building. Her name is Marta and she sells water, juice, candy, sugar and other smaller items. The SpaceGuanajuato, nestled in the Sierra Madre at the geographic and spiritual center of Mexico, will soon become your heart’s home. A UNESCO historic site, this beautiful city highlights Mexico’s revolutionary and artistic past, while supporting a colorful, robust present. A former silver mining town, central Guanajuato is reserved for hardy walkers, with old mining tunnels serving cars, leaving steep, narrow cobblestone streets to pedestrians. This 2-bedroom, 3-bath home has been completely renovated, with all new systems, furnishings and décor. Enter at the rooftop level, and note the huge terrace where you’ll want to entertain, or simply bask in peace and quiet as you soak in the views. Fully tiled in traditional Mexican patterns, the roof is divided into three zones: the laundry area (with separate line outside for “solar drying,”) the main entertainment area, and an open-air room to provide separation for reading, dining, or even sleeping under the stars. On the main floor, enjoy a spacious, airy salon, measuring 22-feet long. Separate seating areas in this bright room flanked by two balconies include a great reading area with oversized equipales; wall space decorated with books, music, and a main seating space with couch and two overstuffed chairs surrounding the tiled gas fireplace. The small custom-designed office space just off the main salon, is equipped with a writing desk, shelves, and wireless connection for your convenience. The dining hall greets guests just past the main entrance, opening to a Mexican–style kitchen with all-new stainless appliances, traditional cookware and dishware, and yet another balcony. A full-sized bathroom completes the top floor—ideal for washing up before dinner, but equally usable for extra guests staying in the main salon. The sleeping area downstairs boasts two master suites, both with comfortable queen-sized pillow-top beds, drawers and private closets for storage. The front suite, offers a deep corner soaking tub, custom tiled, with matching sink and commode. The back suite, offers beautiful Mexican antique bed and armario, with a cala lily/sunflower-themed bathroom, also featuring a soaking tub. Both baths have fantastic water pressure—a real plus in Guanajuato! Unique to this home is “La Cava,” a cool, cozy wine cellar and reading area, also located on the downstairs level for your relaxation and enjoyment. Owned by Americans with an appreciation for comfort, all bedding and linens are of natural fibers. There are easy-to-use gas fireplaces gracing the main salon, and gas heaters in each bedroom suite for those rare cool winter nights. Interaction with GuestsOur property manager is located a short 5 minute walk down the hill. The NeighborhoodTecolote Neighborhood This hilltop neighborhood is inhabited primarily by Mexican families; it’s not unusual to be greeted by the neighborhood children, family dogs, and the aromas of comida cooking in the afternoons. There are just a few ex-pat homes in the area, so you’ll occasionally have the chance to speak your own language while greeting passers-by. Just down the hill, you’ll find tienditas which can provide you with everything from water, to sweets, to brooms and mops. A mere five minutes downhill on Callejon Tecolote, you’ll find renowned Santo Café (the café which sits on a bridge, overlooking the streetscape below). Santo Café is a favorite spot for locals and students alike; try any of their pollo dishes—some of the best you’ll find anywhere! Getting AroundDon't bring a car, you can walk almost anywhere in town and if you find yourself needing a ride to the house, taxis are plentiful and inexpensive.

There is a foyer with seating and cozy living room areas on both levels for avid readers looking for a good corner to curl up with a book! The house can comfortably sleep from 2 to 7 people. We often have family and friends over to watch the fireworks and just enjoy being 'part of the city'. Welcome! Guest AccessGuests have access to our many terraces, gardens and we even have put in a firepit that overlooks the city of Guanajuato. Interaction with GuestsWe love Guanajuato and we ensure our guests do as well. We're happy to provide information about the many wonderful restaurants, museums and places of interest in the city. We meet our guests in the city center (just a few minutes away) and walk them up to the house. From our terraces we're able to show our guests the layout of the city and help them get their bearings. Welcome! The NeighborhoodWe bought this property because of the neighborhood. We started out renting in the Mexiamora neighborhood and began asking around for houses that may be up for sale in the area. We're still friends with the family that we bought the house from (they still live in the neighborhood). The location is ideal and just a lovely little neighborhood. Getting AroundWe're located about 2 minutes from the bus line and taxis are easy to come by in Guanajuato. Other Things to NoteWe are happy to answer any questions about Guanajuato. We are often asked about language schools and we unreservedly recommend La Hacienda Spanish School, (URL HIDDEN) Hasta pronto!

The SpaceCasa Bella Vista: Great, beautiful contemporary Mexican-style 3-storey house with gorgeous views, in a very safe neighborhood. All private rooms have real comfortable mattresses (matrimonial in 3 bedrooms + queen in Master BR). One Bedroom also has an individual bed in addition to the matrimonial (double) bed. Big balcony off 2nd floor. The 3rd floor has a huge 40' x 20' deck with views of the city, perfect for entertaining. Great, large kitchen, and spacious Dining Room, Living Room. Beautiful full tiled bathrooms on the main floor, and on the second floor as well. Parking for 2 cars (3 if you are creative), very nice garden with native plants. Quiet cul-de-sac, and safe, friendly neighborhood. It's a 15-20 minute leisurely walk to Centro. Buses are readily available for 5 pesos (40 cents Cdn) and you can easily flag a taxi to go back and forth for 30 pesos ($2.40 Cdn) to Centro. 40" Smart TV with and fiber optic cable in Master BR. Internet fiber optic WIFI. House phone with free calls. Because it is perched on a hill, the house is always comfortable (not too hot, not too cold) and gets good light. The guests rooms all have windows that open to the interior shaft for air ventilation. With its panoramic views from both the balcony and the deck, you see the sunrise, and the sunset. 15 minute-walk down to the Alhondiga in Zona Centro, 10 more minutes to Plaza Fernando, and another 10 to Jardin de la Union or Teatro Juarez. On your walk towards the Jardin de la Union, you can see the Alhondiga Museum, Hidalgo market, Commercial, Jardin Reforma, and Plaza San Fernando ( very quiet park with restaurants), and the Diego Riviera and Frida Khalo house/museum (tucked on a side street). There are small local grocery shops 2 minutes from the house, and 5 minutes down is the Tepetapa street with its many diverse small shops. The walk is very easy to the Centro, but it's easier to take a taxi back home (for 30 pesos or $2.40), cause it's fairly steep, or take the readily available bus (5 pesos or $0.40) up the Tepetapa (Take the Mommias or Nuevo Panteon, and then hike the last 5 minutes. If you take the Mommias, you can stay on the bus to go around the hill all the way up to the sign that says "Bano" just above the museum Mommias. It will save you the hike along the Panteon Wall. A typical day is to have a smoothie and breakfast in the house in the morning, then stroll down to the Centro and visit, stopping along for a snack at the Hidalgo Mercado; then visit some more, and have an afternoon 3-course meal (drink included) for $5-$7 in one of the nice small restaurants close to University, then slowly make your way back, shopping for your night meal at the Mercado, and take the bus or taxi back on time to catch some more sun and watch the sunset by 6pm. (Downtown gets very cool in the shade after 2pm, but the house has the sun all day). * Please note that during the winter, rooms will be available as a B&B, from $45/night. Please enquire. The whole house with 4 Bedrooms - only the upper studio (or 5th bedroom) is kept locked for the owners' personal belongings. There are regular frequent buses 5mn away (until 9:30-10pm), and taxis are readily available any time, except at the end of the afternoon, when there is a change of shift, and they are sparse. Driving up here is a challenge, as there is a steep turn on a very narrow street. Not adequate for sports car or low cars. Guanajuato taxis are used to it, although occasionally during the day, usually around 2-4pm, when there is a change of shift, you may catch a taxi who refuses to go all the way up. So you can either wait for another taxi to accept, or walk the last 5 minutes climb. If you are landing at the Leon airport, please ask for our chauffeur who can pick you up for about 500 pesos (comparable to taxis at the airport). Guest AccessThe studio/Den upstairs is locked for the owner's belongings. Everything else is yours. Please do not go on the neighbour's roof to have a better view - they get really upset. Interaction with GuestsI'm available by email any time. I check it regularly. The NeighborhoodThis is a well-established mixed Mexican neighborhood - working and middle-class families. Peopole know everybody, and it's a cul-de-sac, which makes the area very safe (kids sometimes play on the street at night until 11pm). No drugs or crazy party please. Guanajuato is well-known for its dogs on the roofs howling at night, firecrackers at times, and fireworks during festivals. If you are a very light sleeper, you may want to bring earplugs or sound cancellation device or ambient sound apps. Getting AroundSee above in description. You will eventually go up the main street called Tepetapa on the West Side of Guanajuato. Pay attention as there will be a left turn towards Museo Momias, as you start going down. You'll do a long loop around the neighborhood, past the Museo Momias, all the way up. Just in front of the sign that says "Bano" (bathrooms of the museum Momias), there is a steep 30 degree turn. You will have to back up two or three times to take it frontward, which is the easiest way to go all the way to the house. You could also negotiate it by backing up all the way up if you're stuck - it’s a long way though. Go all the way up, past a curve where there are lots of car parked and a small kids park (on the left) until you come to a fork, then turn left. The house is the first one - white and blue- on the right. Address is Prolongacion Pinguica 7. If you've gone the legal way around the neighborhood, in front of the Momias, and now you are going down in front of the Panteon tall wall, you've just past it. Go back on Tepetapa on your left, then left towards the Museo Mommias and do the loop again. Illegal way (not recommended during a holiday as there is much traffic going to either the Panteon or the Momias): follow the Walking directions below. You'll be going against a one way for one block, but the street will be much easier to negotiate. Most people and pretty much all taxis go that way. Walking: Take Tepetapa towards the Momias. Don't take the first left that indicates the Momias: it's a steep step of stairs and really not a shortcut. Instead, take a left where the road turns from cobblestones into regular pavement. Turn right before the Panteon (that's the tall stone wall). Go along the tall wall of the Panteon up the hill. On the top of the hill, you'll see a sign on the left that says Banos, and a very steep car street on the right. Go up on that street, all the way up, passed a curve where many cars are parked, sometimes blocking the street. When you come to a fork, take a left. I'm the first house on the right with parking in the front: a blue and white house, no. 7. TAXI DIRECTIONS: (you can fly taxis from the street - readily available - cost is 35-40 pesos day time - 45-50 night time; an extra 5 or 10 if called directly from the house). SUBIDA DEL MOLINO, LAS MOMIAS (Very important to say Las Momias as there are two Subida del Molino. Address is Prolongacion Pinguica 7, Las Momias, but it doesn’t mean anything to taxis - you have to say “La Subida del Molino, Las Momias). TAXI PHONE NO: Jorge: (cell) (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) taxi 160; 044 instead of 473 from the house phone. Linea Dorado main line: (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) (from home phone); Other private numbers from the past JUAN: (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) (may be outdated); Arturo: (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN); Chauffeurs to and from Leon (Leon taxis do not know how to get to the house, but those guys do: Gabriel: (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) (private) Road Circulation up the street: It is quite difficult to go up at those delivery time above (Monday and Thursday noon) as trucks are blocking the road with their delivery. Taxis prefer to take the street after 6pm, when the Momias closes. Then they can go against the one-way and it’s much easier to negotiate the street up then. If it’s a holiday, it’s even more difficult during the day with the Momias traffic. BUS: MOMIAS, PANTEON OR NUEVO PANTEON, P. DE LA ROCHA. GET OFF WHERE COBBLESTONES END AND TURN INTO PAVEMENT. THEN GO UP ON THE STREET ACROSS (ON THE LEFT). Always ask if they are going “Cerca del Panteon”, because if you are catching it on the wrong side of the street, you will end up in the opposite direction. The main stops are either across the Mercado, or in front of the Teatro Principal. A few buses that predominanly say “Momias-Presa” but not P. de la Rocha, will take you all the way to the top of the hill, above the Panteon and the Momias, where there is a sign that says “Banos”. However, even I get confused with the Momias-Presa buses, cause sometimes I don’t notice they mention more areas - bus drivers and helpers always say yes if I ask if they go all the way in the Momias neighborhood, and then I have to walk back - so safer to just get off where the cobblestones end and walk up. Drinking water delivery: Monday and Thursday between 12:30-1:30 (usually). “the “Ciel or Coca Cola” truck. A 5-gallon water bottle, with the empty in exchange, costs 28 pesos. GARBAGE: down by the banos. There is no collection at the house. Water shortage in Gto during December-Feb: Please try to have your showers at night; laundry at night The recent pump system has been very efficient in getting the water up the cisterns automatically. If you are experiencing water issues, please contact us immediately. Washing Machine: (Please use in the evening or very early in the morning during Dec-Feb. in case there is water cut-off. A. Put your clothes in. B. Press “Encender” C. Press “Programa” until the light above goes to cycle “Rapido”. Otherwise, it will take hours. D. Then press “Inicio”. For big loads, the washing machine tends to get off-balance and set herself up to renew the rinse cycle over and over. That takes a lot of water and takes forever. If that happens, turn off the washing machine by pressing “ Encender”. Let sit for a couple of minutes. Then press “Centrifugar” and make sure only that one light is on. Then press “Inicio”. This is the Spin Cycle. TV/Cable: Just press both red buttons on the Magnavox and Dish remote controls until the lights on TV and Dish are green. Then use the Dish remote to change channels and volume. Stove/Oven: Be careful not to leave anything on as it will leak gas. The pilot is on the left. To turn on the oven, you need the lighter. Light the pilot at the bottom center inside the oven while turning the centre dial on (where all the other dials for the range). Instruction in the kitche lower drawer by the microwave. Coffee Pot: Italian Coffee Pot: Put water in the lower part; coffee in the middle part. Turn heat on. Please turn off heat as soon as it percolates. Otherwise, you will burn the coffee pot. French Coffee Press: Boil water. Put coffee in the pot. Pour hot water over and leave the press up to percolate a few minutes. Then press down. Do not put on stove. H/W tanks: One in the utility room and one on the third floor on the terrasse. I leave them on all the time. If there is no hot water, it’s because it’s on pilot only - you will see a flame. Just turn the dial counter-clockwise. The h/w tank downstairs has a light red push button, so you don’t need a lighter if you don’t see a flame. Please note - there may be a new solar h/w system on the roof when you read this. That will take care of the h/w for the whole house. Gas: on the terrasse. If it’s below 2, contact us right away. Sometimes it may take a few days for the gas company to come up, despite all their promises. Please note - there may be a new solar h/w system and 2 more deliverable gas tanks as you read this. Then, being low on gas is not such an issue as there is gas delivery once or twice a day in the neighborhood, and the solar system takes care of the hot water unless there is no sun. Please coordinate your time of departure with Greg Evening arrival and morning departures: My neighbours, Leobardo and Antonia, may not be there during the day time after 10am and before 3pm. But someone is usually there the rest of the time. If you need them to open the door for you or if you’re leaving, you can drop the key to them. If you are leaving and no-one is there, just throw the key through the front gate in a corner pot. Rental Rules Smoking is NOT allowed in the house People other than those in the Guest party may not stay overnight in the property. There will be a surchage of US$10/person additional than what previously agreed between owner and Guest. Guest is responsible for the extra charges and damage incurred. Housekeeping: There is no daily housekeeping services. Towels and linen are not to be taken from the house. Please dispose of your garbage and empty bottles. Stores down the street may take your empties. Garbage is down the street in the big bins provided. This is how it is in all Gto. Although there should be enough in the phone plan to accommodate short phone calls, locally, nationally and internationally, guests are responsible for any extra long distance or phone charges. Safety: Although Guanajuato has a reputation for being one of the safest towns in Mexico, exercise the same caution as you would anywhere in Latin America. Taxis are recommended at night. I haven’t had any incident in 3 years, but there are occasional muggings all over town, as in all Mexico. Avoid empty and dark callejons, especially if you are alone. If you get mugged, do not resist. Muggers are usually very young and in gangs; they may use knives if you resist. Please keep patio door upstairs locked and do not leave windows open when you leave. Lock both front doors. Cancellation policy: Up to 30 days prior to 1st day of reservation: 100% refund - $75 administration fee. Up to 7 days prior to 1st day of reservation: 50% refund. . The SpaceAmple comfortable room on sunny patio, ideal for visiting student or professor. If you like what you see here but the calendar is full, please check out the other spaces available in this House of the Well: there is another adorable room with private bath; as well as the studio apartment! Please note that to arrive here one must walk: either one walks up or one walks down, but walk one must. Guanajuato was not built with the automobile in mind ;=)) IDEAL for a visiting scholar or professor at the Universidad de Guanajuato!! Lovely room with private bath, on sunny central patio in private home. Kitchen privileges. Various sunny terraces with panoramic views of the beautiful City of Guanajuato. The only off-limits part of the house is the music room which is my workspace. The room is ample and has a double bed; as well as a desk at which many people have found creative inspiration, from writing to painting! In spite of our proximity to the heart of the city, there is a certain tranquillity here which is very propicious to work. Eight minutes' walk from the Jardín de la Unión and the Juárez, Principal, and Cervantes Theatres; as well as from the University. Easy access in taxi, microbús and on foot. There is also a private acceso down from the Panorámica. This is a "people's" not a "rich-folks" neighborhood in an Ibero-american city, so you will hear dogs, roosters, and the occasional goat; but it is all quite agreeable. Nevertheless, should you need to bring a car, with a little advance notice my neighbour just above on the Panorámica usually has an extra parking space: cost is 150 pesos / night. Public parking lots charge between 12 and 15 pesos per hour. (I do not recommend "free" parking in a tunnel: it may well cost you the repair of your windshield.) If you arrive in a car, you will almost certainly park it and forget about it until you leave: this city is far easier to navigate walking, in public transit, or if necessary in a taxi. Most important of all, the great common area of the city of Guanajuato and its cultural offering, astounding for a city of this size (population ca. I invite all my guests to enjoy the beautiful views from the azotea (roof terrace)! Each room comes with kitchen privileges: I ask only that you take good care of my pots and pans, my knives, and the Talavera dishes. In reality, all the public spaces in this house are here to be enjoyed: the azotea, the central patio, the little north patio with the laundry. Really, THE ONLY OFF-LIMITS AREA is the piano room which is my own work-space. This is the home of a working artist. I try to share this space with my guests, however short or long their stay here may be. If I am here, I am as available as my work permits. And as always, if there is a concert here in this House of the Well, my guests are cordially invited! This is a people’s and not a rich-folks’ neighbourhood, and in an Iberoamerican city, so you will hear roosters, dogs, and the occasional outburst of ranchera music; but it is all quite inoffensive. This barrio is friendly, lively, safe. We are 8 minutes’ walk from the Jardín de la Unión and from the Juárez, Cervantes, and Principal theatres –the latter being where the Symphony performs every Friday during the university year-; as well as the Museo Iconográfico and Casa Cuatro where there are also concerts and other events. Easy access in taxi, microbús and on foot; there is also a private (locked) access coming down from the Panorámica. Guanajuato was not built with the automobile in mind ;=)) ... I love this city very much – even knowing as I do that we have a lot of things to improve here, I love it very much. And I want the people who come here to visit, whether for three days or three months, to also have affection for it.
