The SpaceThe Casita is a self-contained apartment that is part of Hacienda on the Hill in Ajijic, a very unique property that is over 200 years old. In fact, it is one of the oldest haciendas on Lake Chapala. Originally a seminary, it has played several other roles in its lifetime including that of gold mine. The Casita overlooks the hacienda’s main house and is a very charming self-contained apartment. It has a full kitchen, living room, dining room, large bathroom with shower, a bedroom with a queen bed, a dressing room with a second single bed and a door to your own private terrace. The Casita retains some of the original Mexican details, including unique Saltillo tile floors and mosaic tile counters in the kitchen and bathroom. The views of Lake Chapala, Mount Garcia, and the village of Ajijic below from the private terrace, some of the best in Ajijic, will take your breath away. There is nothing better each evening than to sit on the terrace, drink in hand, enjoying an exceptional view of the sunset over the lake and distant mountains. The Casita is ideally located just a 10-minute walk down to the centre of the village. Do you feel like taking a hike? The best hiking trail up the mountain to either the chapel or the waterfall starts just outside your door. You will feel totally secure in The Casita since it has its own entrance and parking for one car in a private garage. This cozy unit includes cable, TV, DVD player, and WiFi. A telephone can be provide with telephone deposit. Note: An unexpected surprise awaits you under your terrace – the most exquisite tiny consecrated chapel. Other Things to NoteThe pool is currently under repair.

The SpaceCASA DeWITT (UPPER AJIJIC) 360 degree views in Upper Ajijic from this three story completely furnished home off Colon and Zapata. Contemporary Mexican theme. The crowning jewel is the third floor mirador which provides 360 degree views of the lake and the churches (S), the mountains (N), sunrises and sunsets (E/W). A Mexican tile staircase takes you from the 1st floor to the 2nd floor. A metal circular staircase takes you to the (third floor) mirador with a dining table and chairs facing a West facing window wall, W/D, built-in gas grill with two extra burners, sink, dining room table. The second floor is the master bedroom with a kingsize bed; full bathroom with marble bathtub w/shower. Walk-in closet. First floor is kitchen, living room, dining counter, French bath, and atrium w/a wall fountain. The house was built in 1997 and there's contemporary Mexican touches which include lots of natural light, stained glass, and Mexican tile. It's completely furnished - just bring a toothbrush! Although this isn't a two bedroom, we do have a queen size inflatable mattress that we've used for guests and we've put it on the 1st floor so they have privacy, the French bath, and coffee in the morning. We always have our morning coffee and do 80% of our living on the mirador anyway. Off-street parking should be available (based on availability) in a secure, barbed wired lot two doors down West Zapata. We've never used it because we fly to/from Ajijic from Guadalajara, and usually walk or sometimes taxi or bus. Very nice Mexican neighborhood with great neighbors and excellent street lighting. Typical Mexican small-town sounds like dogs, children laughing, roosters, etc. but it's definitely quieter than lower Ajijic. I'd be glad to answer questions and send more photos. We are just a few blocks from the plaza on the South or the hiking trailheads for the mountains to the North and a short walk down to the lakeside and boardwalk (malecon). Also just a short walk to the weekly mercado which sells foods, clothes and many different treasures. Only a short bus (fun, reliable, timely, and inexpensive) or taxi ride to the hot springs: several large pools, natural hot tubs, mud-bath and sauna. Taxis are always available on the square where the taxi stand is and the police station. They're also just a phone call away. Taxis have taken us 4 blocks in a surprise thunderstorm. They also, on numerous occasions, were on time or early for a 5AM pick up at the house for a ride to the Guadalajara airport. (!) Even tied our luggage to the luggage rack! The climate is one of the best in the world: never freezes, so the plants and flowers are huge and lush and never gets over 90 so the humans don't wilt. We hang hummingbird feeders from the mirador they go NUTS! We watch them for hours and hours. Oh - funny story: we decided to time how long it would take to walk to the lake: it took us 3+ hours! We stopped to watch some kids playing street soccer; we stopped to watch some horses; we stopped to admire the architecture; we stopped for drinks; etc. Ajijic is a great place to just stop. What else? Thanks for asking questions... none are too trivial or silly: this is a big decision and where one stays can make or break a vacation so if you don't understand anything, please ask! You're going to love Ajijic: we sure do! This pricing is for the entire home. If you need offstreet parking, please give us plenty of time to get this arranged. We live in Austin, Texas so we have a Property Manager in Ajijic to address any and all issues in a timely manner. This is NOT a gated community - it's Mexico. So if you prefer a cookie cutter neighborhood, this home is NOT for you. If you prefer immersion into a culture and interactions, this will fit your style much better. We'll send you a booklet of information re: things to do and see as well as general how things work. The home is 2 doors from Colon so taxis know where it is. It's 3 blocks from the carreterra which is the East/West route along the north side of the lake so it's really easy to get a local bus or even a bus to Guadalajara, Mexico City, etc. We mostly just walk: 7 minutes to the square, 20 minutes to the weekly market, 5 minutes to a decent grocery, 2 minutes to trailheads heading up the mountain. The home is near the corner of Colon and Zapata - the address is #1 West Zapata. Colon is the street on the west side of the square so we can just walk down Colon and we're at the square in about 7 minutes. The mirador (3rd floor) is where we spend most of our time because of the fabulous views BUT there's a metal circular staircase getting to it from the 2nd floor SO if you're uncomfortable using stairs or have difficulty, you probably won't enjoy this 3-level home. Guest AccessTHE RENTAL IS FOR THE ENTIRE HOUSE - YOU WON'T BE SHARING WITH ANYONE. Full access to everything in the home including the mirador w/washer and dryer, grill, hammock, etc. Interaction with GuestsA property manager is available and is only a phone call away for any problems or concerns. We're available via email for anything strange (like two years ago the electricity went off 3 days in a row. Come to find out the electric company replaced the electric meter with a digital meter which wasn't compatible with the system. They put an old style meter back in and all was well.) The NeighborhoodAlthough there are numerous "Mexican neighborhood sounds", it's MUCH quieter than in lower Ajijic. Wonderful neighbors. Good street lighting at night; no problem whatsoever walking home in the evenings, although we usually watch the sunsets from our mirador and THEN go out. Honestly... the views from the mirador are the best in Ajijic because you're in Upper Ajijic and on the 3rd floor too. Getting AroundExtremely convenient to almost everywhere. A few blocks to buses, call a taxi to pick you up at the house, or just walk and enjoy the neighborhood and all the sites! Other Things to NoteWhen your booking is confirmed and we have your email address, we'll forward an information sheet about the home and another booklet we've created about FAQ's from our guests and "helpful hints" about Lakeside we think you might enjoy. Spoiler alert: there's a bakery one block away (without a sign) that bakes bread daily from a wood-fired oven that is absolutely amazing. (!)

We are preparing the breakfasts personally and keep the house and garden in shape. The SpaceBeautiful new 2 storey house in "Los Lirios" gated community, directly opposite pool, fully furnished and equipped, ready to be lived in! Gas bbq (connected to gas network), table and chairs on spacious roof terrace with lake and mountain view. There are 3 bathrooms, a large and fully equipped kitchen with loads of storage, laundry room with washing machine and dryer, living and dining rooms, office (also the third bedroom with a sofa bed), 2 bedrooms (master bedroom with a fan and air conditioning, not to mention the balcony with a view of the community area. As well as the balconies attached to the two upstairs bedrooms, there is a patio downstairs which is perfect for breakfasts. Furthermore, and our personal favourite, is the delightful roof terrace with breathtaking views of both the mountains and lakes. Ajijic is a quintessential Mexican village full of typical restaurants and shops. The house is 5 minutes away from the largest lake in Mexico, perfect for strolling to watch the sunrise or sunset. Walking distance from Walmart, local shops and restaurants, but far enough not to get any noise from the highway. Only 20 minutes from lots of natural thermal spas, 30 minutes to Guadalajara airport, and 45 minutes to the centre of Guadalajara. It's conveniently close to bus stops in case you don't want to drive. There is lots to keep you busy, even if that means relaxing by the pool! We also leave a supply of basic cooking ingredients such as olive oil, coffee and salt. Roof terrace is equipped with a (state of the art) gas BBQ connected to the house's gas supply and BBQ tools. Interaction with GuestsWe actually live in London so chances are we won't get to meet. A lovely mexican family lives within the compound and takes care of the property ensuring round the clock safety. A cell phone is available during the stay with no additional cost. Cleaning fees are included in the price. Location and climate. Ajijic is a town about 3 miles from Chapala, situated on the north shore of Lake Chapala, surrounded by mountains, and enjoying a moderate climate year round. December and January are the coolest months and May is the hottest, just before the onset of the rainy season. Overall, there is very little temperature variation year round: daytime highs in January are around 75 degrees; daytime highs in July are around 80 to 90 degrees. A Little History. Up until the arrival of the Spanish, the region was occupied by nomadic Indian tribes, probably the Cocas tribe that settled the northern shore. There seem to be many explanations, and meanings for the names Chapala and Ajijic, all of which are Indian place names, probably derived from Nahuatl, the native language of the area. In 1924 British author D.H. Lawrence stayed in Ajijic and loved it so much so that he incorporated the town into his novel The Plumed Serpent. Nearly 100 years after D.H. Lawrence immortalized Ajijic and the surrounding Lake Chapala area, swarms and hordes of American and Canadian ex-pats have made it home. Additionally, American writer Dane Chandos settled in Ajijic before World War II and wrote two books about life there: Village in the Sun (1945, G.P. Putnam's Sons), which concerns his efforts to build a house on the edge of the lake, and House in the Sun (1949), which concerns his operation of a small inn in the house. The Town Ajijic´s streets are narrow, paved with cobblestones, Most homes are behind stone or brick walls, many with surprisingly spacious grounds. The sounds of the village are everywhere - church bells, horses' hooves, the loud speaker of the gas truck, the bell of the water truck, the musical theme of the ice cream man, and calls of various other vendors. Ajijic continues to retain its Mexican identity, while at the same time catering to tourists, with hotels, B & Bs and restaurants galore - more, probably, than in any other Mexican village of its size. Guest AccessYou can use the pool area for swimming, dining and leisure. The NeighborhoodWe have no laundry room but around the corner there is a Laundry called Ceci´s, very cheap and convenient. One minute away walking there is a hairdresser (Yoli´s), restaurants (we recommend Salvador´s for breakfast and brunch) and a nce sushi raestaurant in a place called "El Barco", just in front of the apartments". Getting AroundBuses run all the tiem and to all directions just around the corner. Most people walk to mostly every place. If needed we have a car space for you.

The SpaceThe Rotunda is a designer-decorated studio apartment that is part of Hacienda on the Hill in Ajijic, a very unique property that is over 200 years old. In fact, it is one of the oldest haciendas on Lake Chapala. Originally a seminary, it has played several other roles in its lifetime including that of gold mine. The Rotunda has large windows, a king-size bed, a kitchenette with microwave, coffee maker toaster and a small fridge, a large sitting area, a bathroom with shower, cable TV, DVD and WiFi. This studio apartment retains some Mexican detail, including tile floors and an original quadrafoil window. The views from Hacienda on the Hill, some of the best in Ajijic, will take your breath away: Lake Chapala, Mount Garcia, and the village of Ajijic below, other mountains above. Hacienda on the Hill is ideally located just a 10-minute walk to the centre of the village. Do you feel like taking a hike? The best hiking trail up the mountain to either the “chapel” or the waterfall starts just outside your door. Note: An unexpected surprise awaits you on the grounds – an exquisite tiny consecrated chapel. Other Things to NoteThe pool is currently under repair.

What we love most about the idyllic village of Ajijic - we feel very safe and secure - it is a vibrant international community comprised of writers, artists, teachers, doctors, musicians, etc. - cobblestone streets, with a mix of traffic: golf-carts, horses, bikes, cars and trucks - access to excellent medical care and doctors and dentists who speak English - moderate weather (in winter, 65-78F, and summer, 80-90F and dry ) - not touristy, no resorts and yet many quaint shops - cultural activities (art shows, concerts, indigenous handicrafts, organic food markets, etc.) - informal way-of-life and friendly atmosphere - colorful homes and shops - warmth and acceptance from the wonderful Mexican people - expats, from "up North" and Europe, who reach out and initiate whatever is called for. - Ajijic attracts adventuresome, interesting people - many first class restaurants, yet cost of living is reasonable - the many activities ... bird watching, hiking, kayaking, music, mineral baths, small live theater, movie theaters, bridge groups, garden club, etc. This is a wonderful place to relax, feel safe in Mexico and enjoy the 2nd best weather in the world!
