Tours & Attractions The Puerto Angel area has many fun and adventurous tours for everyone to enjoy. Here are a few tours in the area that will make great memories for you and your friends & family. National Mexican Turtle Centre Established in 1991, the creation of this center was to bring awareness and protection to turtle species inhabiting Mexican waters. Today, numerous species of turtle are protected and their numbers are rising again and include: green turtle, hawksbill, olive ridley, and the leatherback - located in the town of Mazunte approximately 15 minutes west of Puerto Angel. Visit (website: hidden) for more information / Open Tues-Sat 10:00am - 4:30pm & Sun 10:00am - 2:30pm. Montate A La Aventura If horseback riding is your thing then you may want to check out this operation based in Ventanilla. Contact Ramiro Carmona Sofia at (email: hidden) Ventanilla Lagoon Tours There are a few tour companies that offer sightseeing trips into the lagoon, whether it be on boat or on foot. However it is Servicios Ecoturisticos de la Ventanilla that have been operating since day one. This group is dedicated to the preservation of nature and proceeds from the tours go towards funding preservation. Through some of the resorts in Huatulco it is possible to reserve this tour and at times can be the best option in order to have English speaking guides. If your Spanish is up to the test then head directly to Ventanilla and search out the tour operator that is beach front to arrange your day in the mangroves. The community of Playa Ventanilla has taken responsibility for protecting the turtles that arrive on their beach against poachers. During both February and June through October, hundreds of sea turtles come ashore to lay eggs. If necessary, community volunteers help the exhausted turtles up the steep beach, where they lay their eggs. Volunteers then gather the eggs and rebury them in a secure spot. After the hatchlings emerge about a month and a half later, volunteers nurture them for about three months and release them safely back into the ocean. For more information and photos, visit (website: hidden). Besides lagoon tours and saving turtles, La Ventanilla cooperative maintains the excellent beach-view Restaurant Maiz Azul (8 a.m.–7 p.m. daily, $2–6), run by half a dozen dedicated women. They specialize in local recipes, such as savoury banana- leafed-wrapped tamales, baked turkey smothered in mole sauce, and yummy chiles rellenos. They also sell their own home-ground fresh peanut butter. Laguna de Manialtepec – This lagoon is located 16 kilometers west of Puerto Escondido and is lush with mangroves and various fauna. At 6 kilometers long, there are many things to explore including herons, wild ducks and many other migratory birds. Or, bring your fishing rod and see if you can catch a bass, catfish, or tilapia while boating through the mangroves - located between the towns of Bajos de Chila and San Jose Manialtepec 16 km west of Puerto Escondido. Parque Nacional Laguna de Chacahua - lagoons, ocean, and abundant wildlife This national park spreads out for approximately 20 miles of open exposed ocean beach and is dotted with jungly islands amidst the lagoons. Chacahua is a great place to explore the open beaches for surf fishing, beach sports, camping, and the wildlife-rich lagoons that make up this area. If you are looking at hanging around for a couple of days there are a small selection of hotels and cabañas available with the Hotel Seven Seas being the original and most popular (tel. 958 588 1340) - located 66 km west of Puerto Escondido at the Zapotalito turnoff. Head to the end at the Zapotalito landings and you will find Sociedad Cooperativa Turistica Escondida who will transport you by boat. Aguas Termales Atotonilco Hot Springs - A few kilometers west of Laguna Manialtepec are the hot springs and a sacred Chatino site. This is a great day trip and you may either hire a guide or make excursion in yourself. Once you reach San Jose Manialtepec it would be best to hire someone to show up the canyon, through the cornfields, forest canopies, and past the Chatino native villages. Once you have made your way approximately 3 km, you will have arrived at the bath-tub sized rock bubbling with hot water - located at the village of San Jose Manialtepec about 30 minutes west of Puerto Escondido, look for mile marker 116. Hidden Voyages Ecotours - Canadian owned and operated, This tour outfit is owned and operated by Michael Malone and wife Joan Walker (he’s an ornithologist and she is an artist-ecologist). Their tours are generally during the high season and are offered to Attractions… destinations such as Manialtepec Lagoon and also a sunset wildlife tour of Chacahua Lagoon. You may contact them through Viajes Dimar Travel Agency, at (phone: hidden) or (email: hidden) or . Mazunte Cosmetics - Initially funded by The Body Shop, this cooperative makes natural ingredient soaps, lotions, bug repellent and much more. The staff is hard at work ensuring that only locally grown products such as coconut, corn, and avocado oils and natural aromatics form the root for this thriving cosmetics operation - located in Mazunte across the bridge on the ocean side of the road...keep your eyes peeled as it’s a little difficult to spot. Chacalapa - 14 km into the mountains from Pochutla on HWY 175 lies the little village of Chacalapa. Although the restaurant Los Reyes is maybe the most notable roadside attraction, a more in depth exploration may reveal waterfalls nearby. Ask the restaurant owners to arrange a guide for you to the waterfalls. Along the way keep your eyes open for squirrels, hawks, eagles, woodpeckers, toucans, parrots, ocelots, and coatimundis. This will also be a good place to ask about the local medicinal plants and larger forest species of ceiba, guanacaste, caoba, and macuil. San Jose del Pacifico - If the heat is getting to you on the beaches, make a trip into the mountains to this summit with amazing Ocean views. The climate up here is fresh & dry so bring some layers. This road is very scenic, BUT it is also windy and very winding and you will not be able to drive fast once you get into the mountains. Drive time is between 5-6 hours. oTake road #190 to Salina Cruz and get to the hotel via Huatulco. This drive is less arduous, but will take between 7 & 8 hours. •Bus: Take a bus to Pochutla From Pochutla: • Car (30 minutes): Follow the main road towards Pochutla. At the outskirts of Pochutla you will come to a large intersection. Go straight ahead towards Puerto Angel. About 300m after the 243 km marker take a left onto a bumpy dirt road (you will see signs for the Hotel and “La Boquilla” beach). Follow the road for about 500m, turn left at the intersection and continue to follow the road down to the beach (about 2.5km). At the beach turn left, follow the road up and down the hill to our parking lot and reception. •Taxi: Take a cab to “La Boquilla” (about $120 MXN). Depending on the cab driver, he will or will not bring you all the way down to the beach, as the road is not in the best shape. The worst case would be that you’d have to walk down the hill for the last 200-300m. Our hotel is located at the far end of the beach.
