It sits within the Historic Area of the French settlement village, The Historic Area is also registered with Heritage New Zealand; and lies along the waterfront of Akaroa Harbour on Canterbury’s spectacular Banks Peninsular. The house was built in 1857 in the Colonial Regency or Palladian Style of the period, and is thought to have been designed and built by Samuel Charles Farr c.1857 on a five-acre block for Augustus White, a prominent early Canterbury businessman who represented Akaroa on the Provincial Council. Farr is thought to have been influenced by Australian architect John Verge, who designed many important houses in the Palladian Regency style in Sydney in the second quarter of the nineteenth century. This style had been developed in England by Sir John Soane and John Nash. Verge designed The Treaty House at Waitangi in New Zealand. This gracious home is therefore regarded as a special and outstanding example of a particular architectural style that is usually only found in New South Wales and England. It is the only registered example in New Zealand of a pure Palladian rendition of the Regency style in terms of the large house genre, i.e., where the style has not been influenced by Colonial Georgian cottage elements. Guest AccessYou will have full access to our beautiful grounds, including our croquet lawn, petanque terrace and the Blythcliffe private forest, protected by a conservation order for many years and therefore containing many spectacular examples of native trees, plants and birds. Some trees are thousands of years old. We will be happy to guide your bush walk, adjacent to the Balguerie Stream as it tumbles over its rocky bed. Feed our tame eels and marvel at the song and antics of the many unique species of NZ birds. Or just lie in the sun and enjoy the peace and privacy of our beautiful garden. Interaction with GuestsJohn and Lesley live in the main house at Blythcliffe, it is their private home but they love meeting people! They'll be very happy to talk about their home and the surrounding stunning Banks Peninsular. They're also very well traveled around NZ, and can offer some handy local travel knowledge should you need it. The Stables is a completely self contained space, so you are completely able to enjoy your privacy. The NeighborhoodBlythcliffe is located within the charming and historic French settlement village of Akaroa, an easy 5 minute stroll to cafes, restaurants and the many other attractions Akaroa has to offer. You will be centrally located for trips further afield on Canterbury’s stunning Banks Peninsular. Getting AroundGetting around the village is very easy on foot, there is also a free village shuttle bus service during business hours in the summer months. Christchurch airport is a wee drive away, you should allow an easy two hours to enjoy the scenery. There is plenty of free parking at Blythcliffe for your rental car should you choose this option to explore the many exquisite little bays and beaches on the peninsular. There are also return shuttle services from Christchurch city or the airport, just search Akaroa Shuttle to discover your options. You will follow the sign: Eastern Bays, Tourist Drive. Stay on the Summit Road till the turnoff to Okains Bay. According to the Lonely Planet the Summit Road is: "the absurdly beautiful drive around the edge of the original crater". The views are spectacular. At night, low cloud or if you miss the Summit Road the next turnoff to Okains Bay from State Highway 75 is past Duvauchelle. Coming from Akaroa the turnoff to Okains Bay is on State Highway 75 past Robinsons Bay. We are on 32 Chorlton Road, the first road to the left past the museum, the petrol pump and the store. Advice: If you use GPS, type in the full correct address: 32 Chorlton Road, Okains Bay. Do not choose: shortest route. Other Things to NoteWe have another 2 rooms with shared bathroom, so please contact us even if the calendar is full as we probably have a room available for you. We advise you to visit a supermarket in Christchurch or Akaroa to buy fresh ingredients. Coming from Christchurch there is a New World supermarket in Halswell, just a few kilometers out of Christchurch on SH 75. Akaroa has a Four Square supermarket. Coming from Mount Cook/Lake Tekapo there are supermarkets in Geraldine and Ashburton.
