Our home, which also is a bed and breakfast has magnificent views over Christchurch city to the sea and the mountains. It is quiet and private and only 20 minutes from the city centre. After Christchurch's devastating earthquakes, it suffered no damage. We are happy to provide dinners if required and we are renown for our fantastic breakfasts. Reggie the labrador is very happy for guests to take him walking over the hills which has become a favourite "task" for guests. There is plenty of parking. We live in a very quiet neighbourhood, with little traffic noise.

The SpaceA cosy space tucked away from the street, but nextdoor to the Governors Bay Hotel and She Universe (cafe/restaurant). The views (especially when the sun does its wonders in the early morning or evening) are spectacular! Guest AccessIt's only 20 minutes away from Christchurch but it is like entering another world - you couldn't get much more scenic with the bays, the hills. It's also close to the funky port town of Lyttelton, and enroute to Akaroa a very popular destination for its history on the early settlement days of NZ. Interaction with GuestsThis is my home and I will be present during your stay with me. I also have a teenage dog (Dalmatian) who gets a little excited when guests arrive (in the friendliest possible way), but is otherwise calm. The NeighborhoodGovernors Bay is a small community with a population of 800 people. If you enjoy the outdoors, there are plenty of beautiful tracks and walkways to take advantage of. If you enjoy good food, we have two options, both VERY good. The local hotel is super popular on Thursday and Friday nights with the locals, and all day Saturday and Sundays especially when the weather is fine. She Universe make the best coffee and chocolates... really! They even export their chocolates. Getting AroundThere is a community mini bus service providing access to a public transport system in Christchurch during the weekdays, and to the Farmers Market in Lyttelton on Saturday mornings (see (URL HIDDEN) for timetables and fares). I often make trips into town so I can provide transport by arrangement. There is room to park a car on my driveway however the driveway is only one-car wide so we'd be sharing access. The other option is to use off street parking. Other Things to NoteFor cyclists, exploring New Zealand's wonderful cycle trails, secure garaging can be provided by prior arrangement.

It has two cafes serving food and wine, a library and tennis courts. It has lovely coastal and hill walking tracks, with easy access to the water. It has a great community vibe. The bustling port of Lyttelton, with its great Saturday farmers market, bars and resturants is a mere 8minute ferry ride away. Or alternatively, a drive back to Christchurch is 30mins. Getting AroundMy home is a 8min walk to the ferry, then its about a 8min ferry ride across into Lyttelton. The ferry connects to the bus, which takes you straight into the CBD. The SpaceThis simple and effective space provides all most travelers need in a single studio with separate bathroom. It is best suited to those with their own transport although guests without a car have enjoyed walking and using buses. Parking is on a small no exit street with little traffic. For those without transport there is a regular bus service 20 mins walk away from Lyttelton to town and a less frequent bus from 5 mins down the hill. These buses go to the central bus exchange where you can transfer to buses to the airport - or anywhere. Shuttles from the airport can cost over $60 and will take time dropping others off en route. There is a weekly market on Saturdays 9am-1pm plus several cafés and restaurants, galleries and a small selection of shops including pharmacy, supermarket, post office and gift shops. You can phone them on (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) Getting AroundThe view comes from its hillside location so access is via steep roads. It is 5 minutes walk down to the pretty swimming bay with walking tracks but more like 10 minutes to get back up. Lyttelton in a small characterful town 20 mins walk or 5 mins drive away. Christchurch central is 15-20 minutes drive through the road tunnel - or a little longer via a scenic drive over the hill. The SpaceWe call this space our Summer House. It is a separate space well built out of a recycled children's treehouse slightly down the garden from our beautiful home, Fernhill in Governor's Bay near Christchurch. Fernhill overlooks Governor's Bay and with a magnificent outlook to the Banks Peninsula. We have cats, dogs, chickens and llamas. The Summer House is a place where you can relax on the small veranda and enjoy watching the light change over the Hills. But don't think for a moment that it's only suitable for summer time because it is extremely cosy in winter with very effective combustion heater fired by wood grown on the property. The Summer House is a separate room with a bed. So tranquil and remote. Everyone who stays comes away refreshed. The birdsong morning and evening is exquisite. Guest AccessThe only access is by walking down through the trees. It's not far. The toilet is out-of-doors composting. Interaction with GuestsWe are usually around to offer any help required. We tend to be late risers in the weekends. The NeighborhoodFernhill is at the very end of the road, therefore it's relatively quiet. Roughly half of the land area (8Ha of the 20Ha) is covenanted by the QE2 Trust as a conservation area. The rest is grazed by a small herd of llamas. The view to the harbour and hills is beautiful and always changing. Getting AroundFernhill is 30 minutes drive from Christchurch Central and 15 minutes to Lyttelton. There re is no regular bus service. There is a Gov Bus which can be booked. There is plenty of secure parking on the property. There is easy access to the walking tracks around the hills. Little River (30min) and Akaroa (1 hour) are a short distance away. Other Things to NoteFernhill is set high in the valley therefore access is steep ask for assistance if you feel concerned about the drive in. There is no handy supermarket, however the Governors Bay Pub does great meals. That's useful because the Summer House has very basic amenities; cold running water, no power - just a small gas stove.

The SpaceOur guest studio was designed to cater to discerning friends and relatives visiting from around the world. Many of those won't do without advanced comforts, desk space, and telecommunication infrastructure while traveling ... so all this became part of the architect's brief ... and is now also available to you :-) Thus, whether you travel for leisure or work, you will be happy to find all corners covered, rain or shine, winter or summer. The studio is self-contained with its own formal entry, terrace and pool access. It features a kitchenette with a convection microwave, fridge/freezer, and dishwasher. There is no hot-plate and no conventional oven. In the en-suite bathroom a high end washing machine and a dryer stand ready to keep your wardrobe presentable. WiFi is is supplemented by wired LAN sockets. Ample desk space. (Fax, copiers and printers can be accessed in the main house home office, if needed.) The studio features a TV for free-to-view NZ terrestrial DTV, and is connected to an Apple TV unit. The studio is served by a climate control system to ensure comfortable temperatures year round. In addition, there are radiators and IR heaters installed. Extended use of the pool terrace is made comfortable by an overhead infrared heater. The pool features two counter-current jets for easy (stationary) swimming. Guest AccessThe studio is self-contained, with a private pool terrace. The pool is accessible from the terrace. Access to other parts of the house by arrangement only. Interaction with GuestsAt least one of us strives to be on site whenever guests are booked. You can easily reach us by in-house intercom, or by phone, or by ringing the ship's bell outside your studio's entry door. Check-in and check-out times are flexible, limited only by your needs. We understand that you may require very early or very late check-out/check-ins, depending on your flight details. Breakfast and dinner are included in our rates. Of course, before your arrival we will inquire about your dietary preferences, or food intolerance. Meal times can be adjusted to fit your requirements. For evening meals you are invited to join us in the "tall room" of the house. We tend to serve delicious local fare in multiple courses, with matched premium NZ wines (included). Should you prefer, meals can be served in the privacy of your studio. The NeighborhoodCharteris Bay is the "tropical" part of Christchurch: here, temperatures range about 7+ C higher than the official (airport) temperature - and still about 3+ C higher than Governors Bay. Veggies love this place, and some keep growing happily in winter. Furthermore, unlike Governors Bay, we are pleasantly sheltered from the cold Easterly and Southerly winds :-) Makes for great extended evenings out on the terrace ;-) Charteris Bay is a small village, with the golf course and the walking [hiking] trailheads at Orton Bradley Park the biggest attraction. About 5 kms towards the East (thus within walking distance from your studio), the "Preserved" Restaurant is a leading lunch and dining attraction: the best of home-made cured anything can be savoured here (hams and other meats, sausages). Highly recommended! In Governors Bay (10km), the "She Chocolate" cafe/restaurant offers a different type of culinary experience: chocolate-based sweet indulgence, high teas, and even savouries ... Even further afield (but easily reached on the passenger ferry from Diamond Harbour) is Lyttelton with a couple of NZ's best restaurants (Roots, Freeman's Dining) and a colourful Saturday AM farmer's market. Enjoy! Getting AroundCharteris Bay is located about 40 mins drive from Christchurch, and no public transport to there is available. However, Uber has arrived in Christchurch in will deliver you from the airport for about NZ$ 70. Another option is to take the passenger ferry from Lyttelton to Diamond Harbour, where we would be happy to pick you up (no charge). Lyttelton can easily be reached by bus. My recommendation is to have your own transportation, be it a bike, or something more substantial. The Lyttelton Harbour circuit is a favourite weekend tour of Christchurch bikers. Other Things to NoteThere is good 3G cellphone coverage for all three major NZ providers (Spark, Vodafone, 2degrees). Vodafone covers 4G, too.
